Leslie Perkins

Leslie James Perkins, 81, of rural Morning Sun, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 8, 2003, at his home.

Born Dec. 18, 1921, in Louisa County, he was the son of Lloyd C. and Minnie M. Wilson Perkins. On July 3, 1942, he married Betty Jean McConahay in Canton, Mo.

Mr. Perkins farmed in Louisa County. He also was a dispatcher for the Louisa County Sheriff.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Birmingham, CL–62 during the invasion of Sicily and throughout the Pacific Campaign, earning the Purple Heart. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Glenn Allen Post 5166 at Wapello and served several years as the post commander and member of the honor guard. He was a member of American Legion Hays Scott Post 112 at Morning Sun, the national chairman of the USS Birmingham Reunion Group and a member of Moose Lodge in Burlington. He was an avid race car fan and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jim Perkins of Oskaloosa, Ron Perkins of Sumner, Wash., and Rich Perkins of Wapello; five grandchildren; five great–grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Noble of Morning Sun; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, Effie Harrington, one infant daughter, one brother and one infant sister.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial service for Mr. Perkins will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Wapello, with the Revs. Dean Graber and Harlan W. Winter officiating. Burial with military rites by the Wapello VFW will be in Wapello Cemetery . A luncheon will follow at Briggs Community Center in Wapello.

Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice of West Burlington and Wapello VFW Post 5166.

Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Sholl

Richard "Skip" Wayne Sholl, 61, of Oquawka, Ill., died at 11:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in Burlington.

Born Sept. 14, 1943, in Galesburg, Ill., he was the son of Everett W. and Margaret M. Courson Sholl.

Mr. Sholl worked at Maytag Corp. in Galesburg for 30 years, retiring in 1993.

He graduated from Galesburg High School. He served as an Army E–4 during Vietnam. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include two daughters, Missy Scott and Clara Miller, both of Oquawka; two grandchildren; and one brother, Jim Sholl of Tipton, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.

At Mr. Sholl's request, no service is planned.

Cremation has been accorded, and burial of his ashes will be in Oquawka Cemetery at a later date.

Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Daly

Pauline B. Daly, 90, of Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Burlington Care Center. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Regina Steele

Regina Steele, 47, of Burlington, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

The memorial service will be at a later date. A memorial has been established.

Prugh Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Jerome Manka

Jerome G. Manka, 87, of Nauvoo, Ill., died at 4:40 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at his home.

Born Jan. 14, 1917, in Fort Madison, he was the son of L.J. (Joe) and Ida Menke Manka. On July 5, 1947, he married Cynthia Marsh in Fort Madison.

Mr. Manka was a retired postal worker and worked at the Fort Madison and Nauvoo post offices. He and his wife also owned and operated the Flavor Queen in Nauvoo for 33 years.

He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Nauvoo, where he served as Eucharistic minister and usher, the Alleman Council Knights of Columbus of Nauvoo, Nauvoo American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Postal Workers Union and also served on the Nauvoo Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Becky Swartz of Dublin, Ohio, and Peggy McKown of Edwards, Ill.; one son, Glenn Manka of South Bend, Ind.; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Watson, Ella Teixeira and Marie Teixeira, all of Stuart, Fla.; one brother, Richard Manka of Lanesville, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one in infancy, and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus rosary recited at 3 p.m.

The Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Manka will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo, with the Rev. Tony Trosley as celebrant. Burial with a flag presentation by the Nauvoo American Legion will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Nauvoo.

Memorials have been established for SS. Peter and Paul School and Hancock County Blessing Hospice.

Jason Daly

Jason Thomas Daly, 36, of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, after a short illness.

Born April 6, 1966, in Burlington, he was the son of Michael Joseph Sr. and Michaela Daly.

Jason attended Burlington High School and graduated in 1997 from Bard College, Annandale–at–Hudson, N.Y., with a bachelor's degree. In 1998, he continued his education in San Sebastion, Spain, through a Study Abroad program with the University of Reno, Nevada. Jason taught English as a second language in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and most recently was living and working on Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Mickey and Don Kriscuinas of Burlington; his son, Eric Joshua, and his stepson, Roger, and their mother, Fatima of Isla Mujeres, Mexico; three brothers, Joey, Joshua and Ben, all of Burlington; four sisters, Heather of Lakeville, Minn., Noelle of Naperville, Ill., and Nan and Nena of Burlington; aunts; uncles; nieces and nephews; and his grandfather, William Daly of West Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The graveside committal service for Mr. Daly will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in Sacred Heart Cemetery , with the Rev. Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating.

Immediately following the service, there will be a celebration of Jason's life for family and friends at Big Muddy's.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Frances Elliott

Frances Marie Elliott, 80, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Fort Madison, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

Born May 18, 1926, she was the daughter of Manor and Gertrude Billington Johnson. She married Donovan Elliott in 1950.

Mrs. Elliott was a homemaker.

She dedicated many years to the Women's Auxiliary of Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Steven Elliott; two daughters, Linda Rascoe and Susan Johnson, both of Bloomington, Ill.; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother and one sister.

The graveside service for Mrs. Elliott will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison, with the Rev. John Simpson officiating.

Helen May Grinstead

The funeral service for Ms. Helen May Grinstead, 82, who died Friday, November 25, 2005, will be Tuesday, November 29th at 1:30 p.m. in Lunning Chapel. Rev. Jackie Bradford will officiate. Interment will be in Long Creek Cemetery , rural Danville. Friends may call after 12:00 PM Monday where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in Lunning Chapel. A Memorial to the Diabetes Association has been established.

Gordon E. Watters

Gordon E. Watters, 76, of Waterloo, died Friday, November 28, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital.

Born May 13, 1927, in Dunkerton, Iowa, he was the son of Raleigh and Agnes (Faulkner) Watters. On December 21, 1947, he married Phyllis Haberstich in Waterloo.

Mr. Watters was a partner in Austin & Watters Skelly Station, G&G Skelly Station.

He served as a Seabee in Okinawa during WWII.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Watters, Waterloo, IA; three daughters, Margaret Murders, Waterloo, IA, formerly of Burlington, Rebecka (Thomas) Wagner, Waterloo, IA, Elise (James) Thurm, Rapid City, SD; four grandsons, Christopher (Angie) Murders, Cedar Rapids, IA, Nathan (April) Murders, Burlington, IA, Jason Thurm, Deer River, MN., Benjamin Wagner, Waterloo, IA; two granddaughters, Jennifer Thurm, Des Moines, IA; Emily Wagner, Waterloo, IA; three great–granddaughters, Ava, Brenden and Shelby Murders; three brothers, Elvin Watters, Hudson, IA, Dale Watters, Waterloo, Darrell Watters, Waterloo; a sister, Ruth Oliphant, Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by son–in–law, A. V. Murders, sister Ethel Aschenbrenner and an infant brother.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo.

The funeral for Mr. Watters, will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Hagerman Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery with Military rites by the American Legion Post No. 138 and VFW Post 1632.

A memorial for a fund for ministry will be established.

Lloyd Gray

Lloyd F. Gray, 81, of Keosauqua, died at 5:54 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Born Aug. 29, 1921, near Farmington, he was the son of Fern and Vera Kutcher Gray. On May 22, 1946, he married Margaret McIntosh Carroll. She died June 3, 1998.

Mr. Gray was a printer for 50 years with the Van Buren County Register in Keosauqua.

He lived most of his life in Farmington and Keosauqua and graduated from Farmington High School. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served aboard the USS The Sullivans. He was a member of American Legion Beer–Barker Post 113 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Van Buren Post 4563, both in Keosauqua. He was an avid sports fan, Van Buren High School sports booster and was one of the promoters of lights on the Van Buren football field.

Survivors include one son, Jene Carroll of Las Vegas; two daughters, Linda Armstrong and Bobbie Boyd, both of Des Moines; four grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Gray of Ankeny.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

The body has been cremated.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m.

The memorial service for Mr. Gray will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Keosauqua Congregational Church, with the Rev. Charles McCracken officiating. Burial will be in Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington.

A memorial has been established.
