Eva Faber

Eva Rebecca Faber of Rake died March 21, 2000, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Blue Earth, Minn. She was 94.

Her funeral service was held Friday, March 24, at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake. Officiating clergy was Dr. Jennifer Edinger.

Comfort music was provided by Julie Davids, organist, and Marlys Andersen, soloist, who sang "He Touched Me" and "Take Thou My Hand Oh Father." Congregational hymns were "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art."

The casket was carried by Rick Brones, Earl Hovland, Tom Ague, Dennis Bollig, Dustin Bollig and Glenn Tummel.

Interment was in Olena Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center.

Born October 5, 1905, to Cornelius and Effie (Burma) Dirksen in rural Latimer, Eva was baptized in the Reformed Church near Latimer. At the age of three, her family moved to a farm south of Buffalo Center where she was confirmed. She received her education at Buffalo Center Community School.

On December 20, 1922, she was united in marriage to Fred Faber. They moved to the Faber farm south of Rake. They were members of Liberty Lutheran Church, Rake, and Eva was a member of the Choir and Ladies Aid. During the last several years, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, and enjoyed Ladies Aid and Circle.

She moved to Nicollet Place in Blue Earth, Minn., on November 7, 1995. December 29, 19998, she became a resident of St. Luke’s Lutheran Home, Blue Earth.

She is survived by one daughter, Harriet and her husband Ralph Brones and one daughter-in-law, Mardelle Faber, all of Rake; also six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Fred in 1985; two sons, George and Richard; three grandchildren: Gregory Faber, Dean Brones and Craig Brones; a brother, John Dirksen; and by other step-brothers and step-sisters.

Margaret A. Juhl Gillespie

Margaret Anna Juhl Gillespie, 78, died November 12, 1998, at a nursing home in Overland Park, Kans., following a long illness. During that time she was cared for by her niece and family, Susan and Dr. James Bower, and nephew, John Juhl, Jr.

The family hopes to have a memorial service in Thompson in the spring. However, funeral arrangements are pending.

She was born in Thompson on July 21, 1920, to Hans P. Juhl and Helen Halverson Juhl. She was educated in the Thompson school system and after graduated attended Waldorf College for two years, earning a certificate in business.

She then went to Washington, D. C. where she worked in the Treasury Dept. until 1946. Returning to the Midwest after the war, she moved to Evanston, Ill., and worked in several import-export companies in various capacities from 1947 to 1984. After retirement, she returned to Thompson in 1986, leaving to care for an invalid friend in Bella Vista, Ark., in 1986. After the death of her friend she moved to Overland Park with the assistance of her niece, Susan Juhl Bower.

While in the Chicago area, she met and married William Gillespie. Their son, John A. Gillespie, died of SIDS at about eight months of age. Some time after her divorce from Gillespie her mother moved from Thompson to live with her. They lived together until her mother’s death.

Survivors include one sister, Helen Norwood of Greenfield, Mass.; brothers Paul Vincent Juhl of Greenfield, Robert Sidney Juhl of Westlake Village, Calif., and John Harold Juhl of Madison, Wis., and Austin, Tex.; and her nieces and nephews, Ann, Jonathan, Fleming and Margaret Norwood; John H. Juhl, Jr., Susan Juhl Bower and her children, Kimberly, Kelly and Steven.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and son John.

Rose Matheson

Last rites for Rose A. Matheson, 78, were held Monday morning, October 12, at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake.

Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiated. Comfort music was provided by Carol Asmus, organist, and Marlys Andersen, soloist, who sang "Softly & Tenderly, Jesus is Calling" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace."

The casket was carried by Stuart Wamsley, Carlyle Matheson, Eldean Matheson, Stanley Matheson, Randy Matheson and Steve Matheson.

Honorary casket bearers included Michael Dahlke, Steven Dahlke, Andrew Dahlke, Arnold Estebo and Arden Halvorson.

Burial was in West Cemetery , Rake. Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rose Angelas Matheson, daughter of Nicholas and Agnes (Dulas) Kalis, was born March 28, 1920, on the family farm near Wells, Minn. She attended and graduated from Wells High School in 1938.

She was united in marriage to Lawrence Matheson on February 8, 1945. The couple farmed west of Rake and they retired in 1980. Rose was active in her church, with Sunday School, circle and aide. Her pastimes were quilting and gardening.

She died Friday, October 10, 1998, at Walker-Methodist Health Center, Minneapolis.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean Dahlke and her husband John of St. Louis Park, Minn.; three grandsons, Michael, Steven and Andrew; her sisters and brothers, Kathryn, Magalen, Ray, Louis and his wife Ellen, and Edward, all of Wells, and Bernice DeWeber and her husband Glen of Benicia, Calif.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Lawrence in 1992; four brothers, one sister and one sister-in-law.

Allen Bell

Allen Bell, 75, of Kingman, Ariz., died Monday, October 5. His funeral service was held Saturday in Kingman.

Bell, the son of Carl and Minnie Bell, was a 1940 graduate of Thompson High School.

He is survived by one son, Robert Bell and his wife Kathy of Phoenix; two grandchildren, Dena and Tom of Phoenix; one sister, Doris Jones of Osage; and one brother, Glen Bell and his wife Claudia of Palm Springs, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two infant daughters.

Robert Batton

Last rites for former Thompson resident, Robert Batton, were held Saturday, September 19, 1998, at United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. David Crow officiated. A memorial gathering was held September 12 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Born April 20, 1927, in Lennox, Robert was the son of George and Emma (Moore) Batton. The Batton family moved to Thompson when he was seven years old. February 13, 1949, he was married to Darlene Richardson at Albert Lea, Minn. The couple lived in Forest City until 1952 when they moved to Emmetsburg. He worked at Donahue Tire Shop from 1952-1972 and was proprietor of Batton’s DX Station from 1972 until 1978. He worked for Jensvold Motor from 1978 until retiring in 1989. The Battons moved to Yoder, Colo., in August of 1995.

He died at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., September 8.

Survivors include his wife Darlene, 33650 State Hwy 94, Yoder, CO 80864-9570; children Gail Batton, Lyle and Denise Batton, David Batton and James Batton; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and two brothers.

Vance Holland

Former area Thompson resident Vance Holland, 45, was killed in a one-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon west of Forest City. Holland was driving north on 110th Avenue when he lost control of his pick-up and slid off the road. The truck rolled at least once and came to rest upside down.

Holland was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the truck, his nephew Joshua Holland, 6, was taken by Forest City Ambulance to NIMHC, Mason City, and kept overnight for observation.

Holland’s funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, Forest City.

Emma Thorland

Funeral service for Emma E. Thorland, 94, was held Saturday afternoon, July 25, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson. Rev. Richard Newgard officiated. Comfort music was provided by Eleanor Roper, organist. Charolette Elvebak sang "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." The congregation sang "What a Friend" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers included Wallace Cox, Irwin Erickson, Lloyd Rygh, Eugene Sauer, Adolph Swenson and Leon Wipplinger.

Interment was in West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery , rural Thompson, with Winter Funeral Home in charge.

Emma Eudora Thorland was born March 30, 1904, near Thompson to George and Jane (Chorlton) Cox. She was baptized in the Lutheran Faith October 18, 1917, and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran parsonage in Thompson.

She married Richard Thorland June 25, 1924. They farmed for many years in the Thompson community and in 1980 they moved into town.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Thompson, and was active in its ladies aid and circle. She also enjoyed activities with the senior citizens’ group and by being a Young at Heart member.

Mrs. Thorland died July 21, 1998, at the Heritage Home in Bancroft.

She is survived by one son, Dean Thorland and his wife Arlene of Buffalo Center; three daughters, Virjean Skogen and her husband Norman of Thompson, Marlene Vaske and her husband James of Bancroft and Violet Thorland and her husband James Chaffee of Bloomington, Minn.; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Richard on March 2, 1980; two sons, Dicky and Jerry; one sister, Lillian Rygh; and five brothers, George Cox, William Cox, Herb Cox, Walter Cox and Charles Cox.

Charlotte Stenberg

Last rites were held Friday, June 12, 1998, for longtime Thompson resident Charlotte Stenberg, 99. The service was held at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, with Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating.

Comfort music was provided by Mary Ann Olsen, organist, and vocalists Amy Thorland and Rev. Fruhling who sang "Weary Now I Go To Rest" and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow." Congregational hymns were "Crown Him With Many Crowns" and "How Great Thou Art."

Pall bearers were Dennis Appelhons, Ken Stenberg, John Nepstad, Rick Helps, Tim Larson and Tom Larson.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Henry and Lydia (Vikingstad) Stenberg, Charlotte was born April 20, 1899, in Ellsworth. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

She attended Waldorf College, Forest City, and graduated from Iowa State. Miss Stenberg taught school in the Thompson area for many years.

She was very active in the Thompson Senior Center, the church circle and BLCW.

In 1994, she entered Lake Mills Care Center where she died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at 99 years of age.

She is survived by two brothers, Elmer Stenberg of Thompson and George Stenberg of Berkeley, Calif., and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Cornelius Stenberg; and one sister, Eva Bravick.

Jensine Kloppen

Funeral service for lifelong Thompson resident Jensine Amelia Kloppen, 97, was held Friday morning, May 22, 1998, at Zion Lutheran Church, Thompson. Rev. Richard Newgard officiated.

Providing comfort music was Cyndy Johnson, organist, and Frank Myers, soloist, singing "Rock of Ages" and "Amazing Grace."

The casket was carried by Eugene Sauer, Paul Johnson, John Wirth, Norman Skogen, Eldon Indvik and Lowell Indvik. Burial was in West Prairie Cemetery , rural Thompson, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of John and Sissel (Grytte) Klppen, Jensine was born November 6, 1900, on the family farm just south of Thompson.

She was baptized on Christmas Day, 1900, at West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Thompson. In 1914 she was confirmed at West Prairie Church. She was educated at Linden #1 country school. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was active in the women’s organizations. Miss Kloppen spent her entire life on the family farm which was recognized as a Century farm in 1991. She was also very proud of being honored as Winnebago County’s first 4-H leader.

She died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at Lake Mills Care Center, Lake Mills.

Survivors are one sister, Ingeborg Legried of Albert Lea, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Lillian Kloppen of Lake Mills; two nieces, Helen Peterson of Hancock, Minn., and Carol and her husband Sam Iverson of Grundy Center; two nephews, Bruce Legried of Albert Lea, Minn., and Alvin and his wife Lucille Kloppen of Burnsville, Minn.; several great-nieces and nephews and one great-great nice.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Gelena; and three brothers, Alfred, Gordon and Melvin.

Dorothy Truman

Dorothy LaVonne Truman, 72, of Des Moines died of a heart ailment May 10, 1998 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

Services were held Thursday at Iles Grandview Park with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs. Truman was born in Thompson and had lived in Mason City before moving to Des Moines 50 years ago. She was a retired service representative with Iowa Power and a member of Capitol Hill Christian Church.

Surviving are three sons, David Bendickson. Gary Truman and Kent Truman, all of Des Moines; three daughters, Susan Rivas of Des Moines, Nancy Marchack of St. Louis and Colleen Lind of Burnsville, Minn.; four brothers, Marlin Fisher of Thompson, Ramon Fisher of Humboldt, Robert Fisher of Barrego Springs. Colo., and Richard Fisher of Lafayette, Colo.; four sisters, Faye Tims of Des Moines. Ruth Heitland of Buffalo Center, Doris Murphy of Portland, Ore., and Geraldine Goumas of Nyack. N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
