BLUE GRASS, Iowa -- Russell H. Saur, of Blue Grass, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery , LeClaire. Visitation is 2-6 p.m. today at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home. He was born Sept. 9, 1913, in Clinton, to Henry and Carrie (McConnell) Saur. He married Eva Grace Moffit on Nov. 11, 1936, in Argo. She died Sept. 16, 1969. He married Amanda L. Mead on Oct. 10, 1970, in Nashua. He had been a Scott County farmer until 1988. Russell served on the Buffalo Township Board of Turstees for 10 years, and the Buffalo School Board for 10 years. He was a member of the Blue Grass Presbyterian Church, Davenport Moose Lodge 28, and the Scott County Farm Bureau. He loved being a farmer and a cattle feeder. Memorials may be made to the Blue Grass Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Amanda L. Saur, Blue Grass; a daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Robert Gesling, Blue Grass; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven F. and Christine Saur and Joseph R. and Mary Saur, all of Blue Grass; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Danay
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Robert J. Danay, of Muscatine, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Muscatine. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery , Muscatine, where military rites will be conducted by a joint squad of the VFW and the American Legion. Visitation is 3:30-7:30 p.m. Monday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus. He was employed at Thatcher Plastic Manufacturing for more than 20 years. He was born June 27, 1924, in Numa. He married Willadean Haught in 1948 in Numa. During World War II, he served in the Army in Japan. Memorials may be made to the Robert Danay Memorial Fund. Survivors include his wife, Willadean, Muscatine; daughters, Debbie Blake, Rosalind Danay, Kathy Erwin, Bonnie Estabrook, and Teresa Kulick, all of Muscatine; a son, Rob, Muscatine; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred and John, both of Rock Island, and George, Manitowoc, Wis.

Lavon Hahnbaum
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Lavon L. Hahnbaum, of Muscatine, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery , Muscatine. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Monday at funeral home. Lavon Gardner was born Feb. 18, 1927, in Cotter. She married Arthur Hahnbaum in 1947 in Davenport. She was employed by the Cape Coral School District, Florida. Prior to that, she was a clerk for several years at J C Penney's on Iowa Avenue. She was also a receptionist for Dr. Lease for 10 years. Memorials may be made to the Lavon Hahnbaum Memorial Fund. Survivors include a daughter, Cindi Hodes, Roeland Park, Kan.; sons, Ron and Kirk, both of Muscatine, and Michael, Fruitland; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Garrett, Washington; and a brother, Don Gardner, Garland, Texas.

Ralph Hauerwas
DAVENPORT -- Ralph W. Hauerwas, of Davenport, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. There will be no public services or visitation. Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. He owned and operated the Commodore Tap, Davenport, with his wife, for many years. He was born Nov. 24, 1929, in Rock Island. He married Betty Olinger in 1977 in Davenport. During the Korean War, he served in the Army as corporal. Survivors include his wife, Betty, Davenport; a daughter, Inesborg Massey, Davenport; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Carol Lawson, Moline, and Dorothy Onderbeke, Rock Island.

Billy Foor
WAPELLO, Iowa -- Services for Billy C. Foor, of Wapello, will be 10:30 Tuesday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello. Burial will be in Wapello Cemetery , with military rites conducted by Wapello VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166. Visitation is 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the family present from 7-8 p.m. Mr. Foor died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at his home. He was an ironworker working through and as a member of the Ironworkers Union Local 111, Rock Island, for 45 years. He was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Wapello. He married Lois Strawhacker in 1945 in Wapello. During World War II, he served in the Army in the European Theater and received a Silver Star. A memorial fund has been established for the benefits of the Wapello Rescue Unit and the Wapello Community Ambulance Service. Survivors include his wife, Lois; sons, Kenny and Dave, both of Wapello; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Wanda Workman
ILLINOIS CITY, Ill. -- Services for Wanda G. Workman, of rural Illinois City, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine, Iowa. Burial will be in Drury Reynolds Cemetery , rural Illinois City. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Workman died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. She had been an elementary school teacher in New Boston, before retiring. Wanda Miller was born June 22, 1924, in Muscatine. She married William Workman in 1949 in Nashua, Iowa. A memorial has been established in her memory. Survivors include sons, Donald, of Illinois City; Stephen, North Carolina, and William, Clarksville, Ind.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Bauer, Memphis, Tenn.

Mary Fullerton
KEITHSBURG, Ill. -- Mary E. Fullerton, of Keithsburg, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at her home. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Keithsburg. Burial will be in Greenmound Cemetery , Keithsburg. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at the church. Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, is in charge of arrangements. She was a homemaker. Mary Pepper was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Seaton. She married Dwain Fullerton in 1941 in Seaton. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Marsha Fullerton, Des Moines; sons, Ronald and Dennis, both of Keithsburg; and Roger, Oquawka, Ill.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Lawrence, Roseville, and Leonard, Tulsa, Okla.

Paul Samberg
DAVENPORT -- Services for Paul T. Samberg, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Mr. Samberg died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at his home, after an extended illness. Paul Thomas Samberg was born Oct. 10, 1937, in Davenport, to William O. and Grace V. (Pritchard) Samberg. He married Beverly Widigen on Jan. 6, 1962, in Davenport. Mr. Samberg was the plant superintendent at A.D. Huesing Corp., Rock Island. Before that, he was employed as a supervisor at the Davenport location for several years. He was a veteran of the Air Force. Paul was a member of the church and had been active as an usher and Eucharistic minister. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus 532. Memorials can be made to the church, school or International Multiple Myeloma Foundation. Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Janice Samberg, St. Louis; daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer and Eric Behymer and Amy Samberg, all of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Katherine Samberg and Emma Behymer; his mother, Grace Samberg, Davenport; sisters, Shirley Garrow, Mary Kelley, Patricia Fuhrmeister and Joan Bradley, all of Davenport; and brothers, Jerome Samberg, Clearwater, Fla., James Samberg, Moline, and Thomas Samberg, Davenport. He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Joyce Graves; and brothers, William Samberg and Joseph Wood. May they rest in peace.

Elsie Van Meter
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Elsie L. Van Meter, of East Moline, formerly of Rock Island, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. The Rev. Dr. Donald Batz and the Rev. Robin Blotcher will officiate. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Van Meter died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Parkview Health Care Center, East Moline. She had worked at the former McCabe's Department Store, Rock Island. Elsie White was born Aug. 12, 1911, in Burlington, Iowa, to Samuel and Sarah (Burdick) White. She married Homer Van Meter on June 23, 1950, in Davenport. She earlier married Jess Nutting, who died 1947. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rock Island, for 71 years. She enjoyed her family and was very active in PTA. She also enjoyed bridge, was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and liked to fish. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or a local hospice program. Survivors include her husband; a son, David, Rock Island; a stepdaughter, Gayle (Mrs. Don) Dieterich, Moline; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces, Nonie (Mrs. Gene) Krukow, Cordova, Ill., and Betty (Mrs. Blaine) Kimler, of California; and a nephew, Bill Mayer and his spouse Rosie, Rock Island. She also was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Erardo Sanchez
DAVENPORT -- Services for Erardo Sebastian Sanchez months, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Runge Mortuary, with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Erardo died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at his home. He was born April 9, 1998, in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his parents, Erardo Sanchez Jr. and Sonia Maria Rocha; sisters, Lilliana Isabel Sanchez and Delilah Alexis Sanchez, both of Davenport; and grandparents, Isidro Rocha, Pedro and Rebecca Lopez, and Erardo Sr. and Gregoria Sanchez, all of Davenport.

Merlyn Freeze
ROCK ISLAND -- Merlyn Dewitt Freeze, of Dahinda, Ill., formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. The Rev. Ronald Allen will officiate. Burial will be Thursday in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, with military services at 2:30 p.m. by Milan, Ill., Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Freeze founded American Tool & Supply Co., Galesburg, Ill. He retired in 1975. His son, Reginald, still operates the company. In earlier years, he had worked at the former Case Co. and Rock Island Arsenal. He was born March 19, 1920, in Rock Island, to Charles and Alma (Lage) Freeze. He married Lois Lucille Plunkett in 1942 in San Angelo, Texas. She died Feb. 13, 1983. He had attended Rock Island schools. During World War II, he served as a tech sergeant under the command of Jimmy Stewart in a reconnaissance group. He was a member of American Society of Tool Engineers and Galesburg Lodge 894 BPO Elks. He was a life member of Galesburg VFW Post 2257 and a member of Oak Run Golf Course, Dahinda. He was a former member of the Masons in Rock Island; Kaaba Shrine, Rockford, Ill.; and Milan Knights of Pythias. He greatly loved his family. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed dancing and traveling. He loved life!! He wintered at The Villages, Lady Lake, Fla. Memorials may be made to Oak Run Golf Course, Galesburg, or American Heart Association. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Michael) Feeley, Des Moines; a son, Reginald Merlyn Freeze, Moline; grandsons, William Michael Freeze, Michael Thomas and Brett Patrick Feeley; a great-granddaughter, Emily Marie Freeze; a sister, Carrol Johnson, Rock Island; a brother, Lyle Freeze, Humble, Texas; and a special friend and companion, Verna Riis, Dahinda, and additional extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Leo Bahr
ROCK ISLAND -- Leo C. Bahr, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. The Rev. Paul Showalter will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church. Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Bahr was employed 22 years as plant comptroller at International Harvester Co., East Moline Works. Leo was employed a total of 37 years at International Harvester Co., including positions at Farmall Works, Rock Island; Pullman Plant, Chicago; and the Bettendorf Tank Arsenal. He retired in 1970. He was born May 27, 1908, in Carterville, Ill., to Christopher and Christina (Cyrulik) Bahr. He married Cheryl Romme on Aug. 17, 1935, in Peoria, Ill. She died July 22, 1990. He had attended St. Ambrose College, Davenport, and was a member of East Moline IH Salaried Club. He was an accomplished musician. He played clarinet and saxophone with various bands in Canada, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma. Leo played with Bix Beiderbecke in the Quad-City area in 1930 and 1931, the last winter that Bix was alive. Memorials may be made to the church, where he was a charter member. Survivors include sisters, Josephine Wilson, Rock Island, and Genevieve Richey and Bessie Cruse, both of Booneville, Mo., and a number of nieces and nephews.

Betty Carlstrom
MOLINE -- Services for Betty J. Carlstrom, of Moline, formerly of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline. Mrs. Carlstrom died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. Betty J. Dettman was born May 26, 1924, in Long Beach, Calif., to Frank and Bertha (Eckland) Dettman. She married William R. "Whitey" Carlstrom on July 11, 1948, in Davenport. He died Dec. 6, 1995. During World War II, Betty worked at Weapons Command, Rock Island Arsenal. She assembled small arms. After that, she was employed more than five years as a secretary at Hayes School, Davenport, until her marriage. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a life member of the Ladies Guild of the church and a life member of the church choir. She also took part in Vacation Bible School and the Ladies Auxiliary of Friends Circle. She was very active in PTA activities in her younger years. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Vicky and James Buck, Jackie and Kenneth Brenner and Karen Flowers, all of Moline; sons, Gregg, Rock Island, and Douglas, Milan, Ill.; grandchildren, Kyle, Cory and Troy Brenner, Todd Carlstrom, Valerie Flowers and William Flowers; and a sister, Winifred Maxine Hoffman, and a brother, Dale Dettman, both of Davenport.

Homer Gibson
MOLINE -- Services for Homer L. "Hoot" Gibson, of Moline, will be 4 p.m. Thursday at West Branch, Iowa, Municipal Cemetery . Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline. Mr. Gibson died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis, Ill. He retired in 1978 as a supervisor after more than 40 years at International Harvester Co., East Moline. He was born Oct. 6, 1915, in West Branch. He married Marie Hill in 1939 in Nashua, Iowa. She died in 1980. He married Virginia Belden in 1984 in Clearwater, Fla. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Pamela Ehrecke, Moline, and Emilie Rankin, Redmond, Wash.; a son, Michael, Moline; four grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Murray, in 1998.

BETTENDORF -- Services for Rosalie D. Gravenmier, Bettendorf, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, Cemetery . Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Gravenmier died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at her home. She owned and operated R & M Ltd. home decorator and personal trainer. Rosalie Dailey was born Aug. 31, 1949, in Davenport. She married Michael Gravenmier in 1970 in Bettendorf. He died Sept. 3, 1999. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include a daughter, Nicole Gravenmier, Bettendorf; her mother, Alice Dailey; and brothers, George Dailey, Pittsburgh, Robert Dailey, Waukee, Iowa, and Roger Dailey, Peoria, Ill.

Samuel Gammon
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Samuel L. Gammon, of Daytona Beach, formerly of East Moline, died Sept. 24, 1999, at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach. Mr. Gammon was employed as a fireman and emergency medical technician. He retired in 1984. He also was a Red Cross instructor and did scuba diving and body recovery for rescue services. He was born in Carbondale, Ill. During World War II, he served with the 3rd Artillery Battalion In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fort Clinch Restoration Fund, 2601 Atlantic Ave., Fernadina Beach, Fla., 32034, or Hospice of Volusia, 3800 Woodbriar Drive, Port Orange, Fla., 32119. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Marilyn; a daughter, Elaine Bay, Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Gregory L., Orlando; five grandchildren; and a sister, Gertrude Ranz, Wilmington, Ohio.

Beverly Ludman
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Beverly M. Ludman, of Muscatine, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Ludman died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at Hershey Hospital and Lutheran Homes and in private home care. Beverly Hopkins was born June 18, 1928, in Muscatine. She married Richard Ludman in 1946. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Christi Berry, Kathy Gray, Cindi Naber and Chelly Gosset; a son, Jim; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Law; and a brother, Darrell Hopkins.
