Elmarie Smithson
Memorial services were Jan. 19, 2000 for Elmarie Smithson, 79, of Denison, formerly of Kiron, at Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison. The Rev. Wayne Fritzinger officiated with private interment in Kiron Cemetery in Kiron.
Mrs. Smithson died Jan. 14 at the Denison Care Center in Denison.
Mrs. Smithson was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Kiron, the daughter of John Elmer and Maria Albertina (Seestrom) Hoaglund. She was raised at Kiron and graduated from the Kiron High School. Following her education she was employed as a secretary with the Civil Service in Des Moines.
She married Warren Rother Smithson July 27, 1957, in Omaha, Neb. The couple made their home in Des Moines where he was manager of Veterans Memorial Auditorium. In 1974, they retired to Kiron. He died in 1985. She continued to reside in Kiron until moving to the Denison Care Center July 26, 1986.
She was a member of the Kiron American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a brother, John Hoaglund of Charles Town, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Patricia Hancher and Donna Moreay; step grandchildren; a brother-in-law and his wife, Lyle and Polly Smithson of Des Moines; and other relatives.

Peter Baker
Services were Jan. 8, 2000 for Peter Donald Baker, 74, of Ida Grove at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove. The Revs. Roslyn Gunnink and Ron Johnson officiated with burial in Ida Grove Cemetery under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mr. Baker died Jan. 5 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Mr. Baker was born Aug. 22, 1925, in Doon, the son of John and Martha (Van Leeuwen) Baker. He grew up in the Hospers area graduating from Hospers High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army for four years, then re-turned to Hospers where he worked in the trucking business with his father.
He married JoAnne McVicker June 21, 1948, in Sheldon. The couple made their home in Ida Grove in 1952. He joined the Iowa State Patrol in 1951, where he worked for 17 years. He then owned and operated Baker Sand and Gravel in Ida Grove until 1973, then farmed and for five years was a deputy sheriff in Ida Grove. He retired in 1988.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove where he had served as trustee, Sunday School superintendent and teacher, elder and as head usher for funerals.
Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, John and Elizabeth Baker of Fort Myers, Fla., Richard and JoAnn Baker of Pocahontas, Tyler and Debra Baker of Atlantic and Thomas and Pam Baker of Spring, Texas; two daughters, Lue Ella Baker of Manning and Mari and her husband, Bruce Bell, of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Harold and Joyce Baker of Maurice; two sisters and their husbands, Marcella and Stan Kroese of Sioux Center and Alvina and Al Van Roekel of Park Rapids, Minn.; and an aunt, Nellie Noble of Rock Valley.

Cora Ludwig
Services were Jan. 7, 2000 for Cora Grace Ludwig, 80, of Battle Creek at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. The Rev. Daniel Torkelson officiated with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Battle Creek under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Battle Creek.
Ms. Ludwig died Jan. 3 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Ms. Ludwig was born Nov. 6, 1919, in Maple Township, Battle Creek, the daughter of Berthold and Josephine (Muller) Ludwig. She was a lifelong resident of the Battle Creek area.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek and also enjoyed her friends at Battle Creek Senior Citizens.
Survivors include two siblings, Frances Ludwig and Noel Ludwig, both of Battle Creek; and many nieces and nephews.

Lucy Jahncke
Services were Jan. 6, 2000 for Lucy Glee Jahncke, 84, of Battle Creek, formerly of Webster City, at First Baptist Church in Webster City. The Rev. Bill Kem officiated with burial in Graceland Cemetery in Webster City under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Jahncke died Jan. 2 at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek.
Mrs. Jahncke was born July 27, 1915, in Webster City, the daughter of George and Chlista (Willson) Wilson. She graduated from Lincoln High School.
She married Vernie Jahncke June 6, 1940, in Webster City, where the couple made their home and lived their entire married life. Over the years she was employed at the Webster City Greenhouse, Hart-Carter, and at Hamilton County Hospital.
She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church and also belonged to the Garden Club.
Survivors include a sister and her husband, Liz and Jim Rice of Battle Creek; and many nieces and neph-ews.

Darlene Anderson
Graveside services were Jan. 7, 2000 for Darlene Bloyer Anderson, 72, of Schaller at Schaller Cemetery . The Rev. Carol Gailey of Early officiated under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Schaller.
Mrs. Anderson died Jan. 4 at a Sioux City hospital.
Mrs. Anderson was born Aug. 29, 1927, the daughter of George and Grace (Luce) Kroeger.
She was employed as a custodian at Schaller-Crestland School for many years. Her husband, Vaughn, died in 1984.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas of Castana, Steven and his wife, Coleen of Roscoe, Ill., and Larry and his wife, Jullie of Schaller; a daughter and her husband, Katherine and Steve Koetters of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Emma Claus of Hornick, Gene Carstensen of Arthur, and Shirley Riggles of Colorado; and a brother and his wife, Ray and Barbara Kroeger of Oregon.

Charlotte Bloom
Services were Jan. 8, 2000 for Charlotte E. Bloom, 90, of Hawarden at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. The Rev. Dean Shelly officiated with burial in Galva Township Cemetery in Galva under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mrs. Bloom died Jan. 4 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Mrs. Bloom was born Sept. 22, 1909, in Galva, the daughter of William I. and Mabel (Davis) Jacques. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City and graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.
She married Lyle McDiarmid in March 1933. The couple lived in Storm Lake, Early and Galva. He died in 1957.
She married Howard Bloom Aug. 7, 1965, in Storm Lake. The couple made their home in Ames and Des Moines before moving to Hawarden in July 1982. He died in 1992.
She taught school for 42 years in many cities including, Galva, Des Moines and Ames.
She was a past president of Ha-warden Hospital Auxiliary and Des Moines Retired Teachers Asso-ciation. She was active in the United Methodist Church, politics and community affairs. She enjoyed teaching piano lessons and was a member of Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Robert and Colleen McDiarmid of San Jose, Calif.; a daughter and her husband, Janet and Lyle Thompson of Hawarden; a sister and her husband, Dorothy and George Krohn of Storm Lake; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and neph-ews.

Vern "Whitey" Boerner
Services were Jan. 8, 2000 for Vern L. "Whitey" Boerner, 95, of Odebolt at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Al Milligan officiated with burial in Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Boerner died Jan. 6 at Loring Care Center in Sac City.
Mr. Boerner was born Nov. 5, 1904, on a farm southwest of Odebolt in Levey Township, the son of John and Lena (Roth) Boerner. He received his education through the eighth grade at a country school in Levey Township. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt.
He married Alice Waggoner of Odebolt Dec. 7, 1941 in Marshall, Minn. The couple farmed the Kessler farm northwest of Odebolt from the time of their marriage until Dec. 7, 1941. They farmed the Rafferty farm northwest of Odebolt from 1941 until December of 1947. In 1945, he bought into the International Harvester dealership, Cowlham and Roth Implement in Odebolt. The name of the business was changed to Boerner and Roth Implement.
The couple had a farm sale Jan. 8, 1945 and moved into Ode-bolt where they lived in rental property until 1965 when they pur-chased his mother's home. In 1956, he sold his part of Boerner and Roth Im-plement to Vern Roth. He then went to work, driving a tank wagon for Eddie Wolterman at Wolterman Oil. Several years later, drove tank wagon for Almer Noyd at Noyd Oil, until his retirement.
As a young man, Boerner played softball. He continued this until he was about 35 years old. From 1946-88, the couple went fishing in Minnesota and Canada every spring and fall.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Wheeler Club, Richland Club and served as a director of the Sac County Sportsmen's Club in the '50s and '60s.
She died in 1990. He remained in their home until Nov. 3, 1991, when he be-came a resident at Colonial Manor in Odebolt.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Douglas and Bonnie Boerner of Sac City; a daughter, Beverly Boerner Oregon of Nevada; four granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Ralph and Bonnie Boerner of Odebolt; and a sister-in-law, Miriam Boerner of Odebolt.

Virginia Schmidt
Services were Jan. 10, 2000 for Virginia Ann Schmidt, 79, of Arthur at the Evangelical Free Church in Arthur. The Rev. Robert Lundberg officiated with burial in Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Schmidt died Jan. 7 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Mrs. Schmidt was born Dec. 10, 1920, in Odebolt, the daughter of Reuben and Elna (Larson) Lindskoog. She was baptized and confirmed at the Odebolt Covenant Church. She received her early education at Wheeler #5 Country School and graduated from Odebolt High School. Following graduation, she received her teacher training at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. She taught seven years at Wheeler #3 and #5 Country Schools near Odebolt.
She married Melvin Schmidt Oct. 24, 1945, at the Odebolt Covenant Church. The couple lived their entire married life on their farm south of Arthur. They celebrated their 54th anniversary in 1999.
She recently attended the Evangelical Free Church of Arthur and was a member of the FCWM (Dorcas).
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Joan and Dwain Swensen of Kiron; two sons, Arlo Schmidt and Alan and his wife, Kim Schmidt, all of Arthur; seven grandchildren; Jennifer and Jodie Swensen of Kiron, Matthew and his wife, Gena Schmidt of Orange City and Aaron, Micah, Isaac and Audra Schmidt, all of Arthur; a brother and his wife, Wayne and Ruby Lindskoog of Odebolt; and many relatives.

Steven O'Donnell
Services were Jan. 10, 2000 for Steven LeRoy O'Donnell, 94, of Holstein, formerly of Ida Grove, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove. The Rev. Roslyn Gunnink officiated with burial in Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mr. O'Donnell died Jan. 6 at Good Samaritan Center in Holstein.
Mr. O'Donnell was born March 24, 1905, in Polk County, the son of James Edward and Florence (Wilcox) O'Donnell. He grew up and received his education in Grimes, graduating from Grimes High School in 1923. He earned his bachelor's degree and master's in education at Drake University in Des Moines, and began his 48-year career in education as a teacher.
He married Mildred Verner June 11, 1927, in State Center. The couple lived in several Iowa towns over the years while he served as superintendent of schools including Elkhart, Shelby and Primghar. In 1951, they moved to Ida Grove. She died in 1999.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove as well as the Order of Masons.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Robert Clark of Urbandale and Janet and Arthur Banks of Boston, Mass.; two grandchildren, Michael Robert and his wife, Kyle Clark of Silver Springs, Md., and Kevin Joseph Nelson of New York City, N.Y.; and one great-grandson, Michael Conor Clark.
