ETHEL VOLKMAN

MASON CITY - Ethel Volkman, 88, of Mason City, formerly of Nora Springs, died Friday (April 7, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Nora Springs Christian Church, with the Rev. William Lemke and the Rev. Sharon Sauerers officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 1 until 3 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., in Mason City. Visitation will also be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave. in Nora Springs.

Memorials may be directed to the Ethel Volkman Memorial Fund.

Ethel was born April 6, 1912, the daughter of William and Ethel (Whitney) Lemke, rural Garner. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1931. She and her sister moved to Mason City soon after graduation.

She was employed at Weeds Pharmacy for a number of years. On Sept. 12, 1937, she was united in marriage to Arnold A. Volkman at the First Methodist Church in Mason City. The couple lived in Nora Springs throughout their marriage - celebrating their 50th and 53rd anniversaries with relatives and friends at the Nora Springs Christian Church.

Ethel was a member of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. She previously was a member of the Lucky Dozen Club, Crescent Club and a Bible study group. She organized a group of Girl Scouts in Nora Springs in 1940 - the first one there.

After Arnold's death in April of 1991, she lived with her sister, Lorraine Mitchell, in Mason City. They spent winters in Mesa, Ariz., until moving to The Willows in June of 1997.

Surviving her are her sister, Lorraine Mitchell, of Mason City; and three brothers, William W. Lemke, of Weyerhauser, Wis., Byrnes Lemke and his wife, Stella, of Klemme and Laurice and his wife, Marjorie, of Klemme; 10 nieces and nephews, William D. Lemke and his wife, Sien, of Valhalla, N.Y., Bryant Lemke, of Minneapolis, Bernard Lemke, of Charlotte, N.C., Brenda Megale, of Houston, Texas, Linda Lindsay and her husband, Jay, of Rock Falls, Steven Lemke and his wife, Jeannie, of Tucson, Ariz., Gwendelyn Suntken and her husband, Byron, Meservey, Paige Rohlf and her husband, David, of Altoona, Lynn Lemke and his wife, Valerie, of Olathe, Kan., and Michelle Greiman and her husband, Stan, of Garner; 19 great-nieces and nephews; and three great-great-nieces.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one sister, Helen Sellner, of Milwaukee.

ARLENE M. GRANT

MASON CITY - Arlene M. Grant, 83, of Olympia, Wash., formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (April 5, 2000) in Olympia, Wash.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Arlene M. Grant graduated from Mason City High School. On April 16, 1938, Arlene married George A. Grant in Mason City.

She was a retired employee of the United Home Bank in Mason City, where she had worked for more than 20 years. She had lived in Mason City for 80 years.

She was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City.

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra K. Lepper, of Olympia, Wash; one son, Robert James Grant, of Mexico; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; and one brother, Ralph Hart.

HARRIET A. HALFPOP

FAIRMONT - Harriet A. Halfpop, 62, of Fairmont, Minn., died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at the Fairmont Community Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial will be at a later date.

There will be no visitation. Lakeview Funeral Home, 205 Albion Ave. in Fairmont, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.

CALE JOHNSON

GREENE - Cale Johnson, 18, of rural Greene, died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

VICTOR SNYDER

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. - Victor Snyder, 84, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., formerly of the Mason City and Clear Lake areas, died Thursday (April 6, 2000) in Forest Lake, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 6900 West Fish Lake Road in Maple Grove, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Kapala-Glodek-Malone Funeral Chapel, 7800 Bass Lake Road in New Hope, Minn., and one hour prior to services at the church.

CHARLES T. KOENIGSFELD

CHARLES CITY - Charles T. Koenigsfeld, 76, of 1112 Clinton St., died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, with the Rev. Francis Perry officiating. Burial will be in the Saint Boniface Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with a 7 p.m. vigil scriptural wake service. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday at Hauser Funeral Home.

EDNA C. BUTCHER

ROCKWELL - Edna C. Butcher, 88, of Rockwell, died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Interment will be at the Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., Rockwell.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Edna C. Butcher Memorial Fund.

Edna was born on Aug. 31, 1911, one of four children, to Martin G. and Anna (Bentjen) Lorenzen. She graduated from Rockwell High School and then Hamilton Business College. She was a bookkeeper for Peoples Gas and Electric until her marriage.

On Feb. 25, 1940, in Rockwell she was united in marriage to Thomas C. Butcher. To this union were born three children. They were married for 30 years until he preceded her in death. Edna was a lifelong resident of Cerro Gordo County.

During her early years Edna made the family clothing, tended her vegetable garden and canned the fruits of her labors. She also did needlework and counted cross-stitch, made toys for her grandchildren and sewed quilts and bibs with her church friends.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Those who shared in her life include her daughter, Joanne, and her husband, Clarence Sherfield, of Ackley; one son, Donald, and his wife, Carol Butcher, of McKinney, Texas; her four granddaughters, Annette and Laura Hiebenthal, Andrea McLean and Rebecca Sherfield; and one son-in-law, Rodney Hiebenthal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, on May 20, 1970; her daughter, Mary Hiebenthal; one sister, Ruth Johnson; and two brothers, Lawrence and Walter Lorenzen.

LEO ALBERT DORR

BELMOND - Leo Albert Dorr, 95, of Belmond, passed away Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, with Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Francis Cemetery , near Belmond.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today at the funeral home and will continue until service time.

Leo, the son of Albert and Elsie (Harlan) Dorr, was born Aug. 16, 1904, in Belmond. He grew up in the Belmond area and attended Belmond schools.

Leo was united in marriage to Helen Kelly on Sept. 24, 1924, in Belmond. The couple first made their home in Belmond, where Leo worked as a carpenter. They later moved to Oxford Junction and then moved back to Belmond in 1943. He worked for A.R. Dorr Construction, Kings Construction and later started his own company, Leo Dorr Construction. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Belmond Fire Department. He loved to fish and travel, and wintered in Florida for several years.

The family of Leo A. Dorr would like to offer a special acknowledgement to the Belmond Health Care Center and its staff. Thank you for all the personal quality care and friendship shown to Leo during his stay.

Leo is survived by two daughters, Colleen Walrod and her husband, Doug, of Belmond, and Donna Robertson and her husband, Dave, of Belmond; two sons, Leo Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Iowa Falls and David and his wife, Wanda, of Belmond; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn Anderson of Belmond; two brothers, Larry and his wife, Doris, of Belmond and Donnie and his wife, Mildred, of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; son, Eugene; granddaughter, Kathy; and two sisters and seven brothers.

VESTA M. LINDSAY

CLEAR LAKE - Vesta M. Lindsay, 97, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Fred Lewis, of the United Methodist Church of Clear Lake, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday and continue until time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Vesta M. Lindsay Memorial Fund.

Vesta May Lindsay was born March 10, 1903, in Ventura, the daughter of Henry and Laura (Goodling) Billman. When she was a child, her family moved to Mason City where she graduated from Mason City High School and Hamilton Business College.

Vesta was a bookkeeper for Thomas Machine Company in Mason City for many years and later for Murphy Manufacturing Co. She was married to Lester Lindsay. To this union two sons were born, Larry and Jerry.

Vesta enjoyed taking her sons fishing and hunting when they were growing up. She bowled in a women's league in Mason City and was an avid Hawkeye fan. She followed their football and basketball games very closely and remained very knowledgeable about the teams.

Her sense of humor, her fortitude and her amazing memory were an inspiration to her family and to her caregivers at the Oakwood nursing home.

She is survived by one son, Jerry Lindsay and his wife, Katie, of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Tom Lindsay of Lansing, Gary Lindsay of Marion, Susan Locke of Mesa, Ariz., Sally Whitehill of Clear Lake, Jay Lindsay of Mason City, John Lindsay of Clear Lake, Michael Lindsay of Victorville, Calif., Joan Thornton of Hesperia, Calif., and Dan Lindsay of Canby, Ore.; 25 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Carol Lindsay of Apple Valley, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Irene Billman of San Diego, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Henry and Bufort; one sister, Frances; her son, Larry; and one great-grandchild.
