KATHRYN HEBEL

MASON CITY - Kathryn Hebel, 78, fondly known as Katie, passed away on Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) due to complications from surgery.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St. in Manly.

Memorials may be directed to the Kathryn Hebel Memorial Fund.

Kathryn (Basgall) Hebel was born April 3, 1923, in Manly. She was the daughter of Emmanuel and Barbara (Frank) Basgall. She was married to Gerald (Jack) Hebel on Nov. 18, 1942, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

Katie lived the majority of her life in Manly. She enjoyed watching television with her husband, Jack, especially "The Price is Right," "Wheel of Fortune" and John Wayne movies.

She also loved to spend time with her sisters, playing cards and bingo, fishing and golfing. Special time was spent with her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Katie's special friend, her cat, Angel, brought her much joy and a constant napping partner. Katie will be remembered for her generosity and gentle nature. She spread her love to everyone who ever touched her life. Katie and Jack were beginning their 60th year of marriage.

Katie's surviving family include her husband, three daughters, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one expectant great-grandchild, one brother and two sisters.

Those surviving are daughter, Juanita and Jim Cooper, of Manly; granddaughter, Kim and Glen Venz, of Houston, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Nathan, Natasha and Nicole; and grandson, Justin Cooper, a student in Ames.

Daughter, Loretta and Tom Paten, of Las Vegas, Nev.; granddaughter, Kelley and Bill Smith, of Detroit, with baby Smith on the way; and granddaughter, Shawnda Westly of Sacramento, Calif.

Daughter, Kathleen (Kathi) and Joel Jensen, of Cedar Rapids, and grandsons, Joshua and Jacob.

Brother, Jake Bagsall of Los Angeles; sisters, Maggie Reed and Bobbie Lenhart, both of Clear Lake.

Katie will be missed greatly by her family, friends and Angel.

JOSEPH 'JOE' NEGRETE

BELMOND - Joseph "Joe" Negrete, 79, of Belmond, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit will officiate. Burial will take place in the St. Francis Cemetery , with graveside military rites provided by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Visitation for Joseph "Joe" Negrete will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. There will be additional visitation one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Joseph "Joe" Negrete, the son of Simon and Guadalupe (Ramerez) Negrete, was born March 12, 1922, in Walesburg, Colo. At age 9 he moved to Belmond with his family. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith.

Joseph was inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served in the European Theater of Operation and the South Pacific. While in service he served on board the U.S.S. Dorthea and the U.S.S. Betelgeuse. He drove amphibious landing boats. He returned home in 1945.

Joseph was united in marriage to Mary Argumedo on Feb. 26, 1949, in West Des Moines. The couple made their home in Belmond, where they raised their family. Joe was employed by General Mills and Central Soya. He retired at age 59.

Joe was a very avid gardener. His pride and joy was his garden. He also spent a lot of time mowing lawns. Joe attended seven Navy reunions starting in February 1986.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Mary, of Belmond; three sons, Frank, of Clarion, Dennis and his wife, Beatrice, of Belmond, and David and his wife, Kayla, of Grimes; four grandchildren, Jesse and his wife, Shawna, Jessica, Brennan, and Brock; two great-grandchildren, Kobe and Vada; 10 brothers and sisters, Jean Schwartz, of Belmond, Jesus Negrete, of Belmond, Conie Swanson and her husband, Cecil, of Des Moines, Mary Negrete, of San Francisco, Isabelle Negrete, of San Diego, Nellie Fleming and her husband, Marvin, of Omaha, Neb., Simon Jr. and his wife, Rosie, of Rocklin, Calif., Ruth Matthews and her husband, Tom, of Neptune, Fla., Stella Bougous and her husband, George, of South Lyon, Mich., and Robert Negrete, of Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

JOHN EMMERT

MASON CITY - John Emmert, 86, of 5100 Fourth St. S.E., died Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2002) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Richard Pippert of Shell Rock Valley United Methodist Churches officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

John Emmert was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Cerro Gordo County. He was the son of Ben and Maude Emmert. When John was one week old, he and his family moved one mile south to the current Emmert farm. He lived and worked there all of his life. He was a 1932 graduate of Mason City High School.

John met his wife, Lois, at a box social. She was the schoolteacher at Portland No. 2, across the road from the north end of the farm. John's rows were not as straight as usual that year.

They married on Jan. 1, 1939, and lived on the farm. John farmed with his father, Ben, and his uncle, Frank Emmert. They milked cows, raised grain and purebred Poland China pigs. In 1955 they had a Grand Champion boar at the Iowa State Fair.

John enjoyed farming and hunting. He especially liked coon hunting and coon dogs. After a long day in the fields, John could be found walking the woods at night listening to his hound trail a coon. His hunting partners and their families became dear friends.

John was also a strong supporter of 4-H and his children's projects in 4-H. He was active as a 4-H project leader and for a time was swine chairman at the North Iowa Fair. He was a member of NIVA, the antique car club. He drove his 1929 Model A Ford in parades and club trips. He greatly enjoyed the friends from that group. As an avid supporter of the Kinney Pioneer Museum, he donated his Model A and antique guns.

He also always looked forward to his monthly Class of 32 reunion breakfasts. John touched the lives of many people. He helped teach them to hunt, farm and work. He never met a person he could not talk to and had a genuine interest in them. He will be missed by many.

He is survived by his children, Donita McCoy and husband, Dick, of Ames, Deanna Dow and husband, Dave, of Loveland, Colo., and Doyce Emmert and wife, Trish, of Walhalla, S. C.; grandchildren, Peter McCoy of Norwood, N.Y., Shawn McCoy, of Sioux City, Meagan McCoy of Ft. Madison, Shannon McCoy and wife, Jenny, of Ft. Washington, Md., Dawn Karr and husband, Joe, of Loveland, Colo., Daniel Dow, of Denver, Colo., Katy Emmert, of Greensboro, N.C., Todd Emmert, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one great-grandchild, Brendon McCoy; brother, George Emmert, of Mason City; two sisters, Evelyn Carlson, of Richland, Wash., and Frances Johnson and husband, Russell, of Oconomowoc, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Lois.

SYLVIA M. SIEFKES

CHARLES CITY - Sylvia M. Siefkes, 95, died Thursday (Jan.10, 2002) at Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

CLEAR LAKE - Bruce A. Mead, 59, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at his home in Corpus Christi.

CLEAR LAKE - Gertrude Meyer, 98, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Jan. 10, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.

DOROTHY M. DALL

MASON CITY - Dorothy M. Dall, 88, of Maplewood, N. J., formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at her home.

A funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating.

A rosary service will be held at 5 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with visitation until 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude.

Dorothy Maribelle Dall was born April 4, 1913, in Mason City, the daughter of Harry and Florence (McCook) Conlin. She was a graduate of Mason City High School.

Her career included many years at Northwestern Bell and AT & T. She retired from AT & T in the late 1970s.

She moved to New Jersey in 1998 to be closer to family.

She was a former member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and the Telephone Pioneers Association.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Raquet and husband, Walter, of Greenwich, Conn.; her granddaughter, Kelly Poland and fiancé, Adam Stanislavsky, of Manhattan, N.Y.; and her best friend, Naomi Jensen, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Jane Conlin.
