VERA M. OSSLUND
MASON CITY - Vera M. Osslund, 85, of 304 Third St. N.E., died Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Arne Bergland officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. this evening at Major-Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
The family suggests memorials to the Vera M. Osslund Memorial Fund.
Vera was born June 2, 1914, in Portland, the daughter of Carl and Mabel (Nielson) Peterson. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1932. Vera married Leland Osslund on March 5, 1940, in Mason City. During their early years of marriage they lived in Minneapolis and Rochester, Minn., returning to Mason City in 1945. Vera enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and crocheting for her family. Her true joy in life was her daughter, granddaughters and great-grandchildren. In the last two years there were so many significant losses in her life, but she remained as strong and tough as possible. Vera had a way of making people laugh every single day without even trying. Though she will be greatly missed by her loved ones, we know in our hearts she is happy to be back home with her husband Lee who she missed dearly. Vera was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Chase of Mason City; grandchildren, Kim (Dennis) Kline of Mason City, Kellie Chase and fiance Dean Nelson of Mason City, Kristal Chase and fiance Kevin Fitzgerald of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Jason, Brandon and Kaitlyn Kline, Brooke Fuchs, and Kearin Chase; one sister, Phyllis Coyier and husband, Jim, of Albertville, Minn.; special niece, Lisa Wilson; and two special nephews, Sean and Tony Ouderkerk; and additional nieces and nephews.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leland, two brothers, Carl L. and John, and three sisters, Arlene, Lois and Leona.
ZAINE NIKOLAUS BUSS
MASON CITY - Zaine Nikolaus Buss, infant son of Nikolaus Buss and Stacy Crooks of Mason City, died Friday (Aug. 13, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery
with the Rev. Robert Towner of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
The family suggests memorials to the Zaine Nikolaus Buss Memorial Fund.
Zaine is survived by his parents, Nik Buss and Stacy Crooks of Mason City; maternal grandparents, Dennis and Darcia Crooks of Mason City; paternal grandparents, Tim and Diane Buss of Mason City; maternal great-grandparents, Harold and Glatha Hedges of Jefferson, and Hazel Crooks of Scranton; paternal great-grandparents, Kathy Morel of Mason City, Richard Morel of New London, Minn., and Luther and Dorothy Buss of Mason City; uncles, Kris and Zach Buss of Mason City, and Wade Crooks of Mason City; aunt, Hillary Crooks; and several great aunts and uncles.
Zaine was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Cleo Crooks, and his great-uncle, Brad Morel.

SHEFFIELD - Connie Becker, 43, died Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, following a car-motorcycle accident on Highway 65.

MASON CITY - Herman "Skeeter" Cory, 75, of 1523 N. Quincy Ave., died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Grace United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. There will be a Moose Lodge service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Other funeral arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

MASON CITY - David M. Murphy, 81, of 930 12th St. N.E., died Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church.

DAVID M. MURPHY
MASON CITY - David M. Murphy, 81, of 930 12th St. N.E., died Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Mason City Foundation or the Kinney Pioneer Museum.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
David was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Dr. Frank and Jessica (MacGregor) Murphy. He graduated from Mason City High School and later attended and graduated from North Iowa Area Community College. He married Phyllis Zemanek on July 16, 1958, in Mason City.
David's business career started in a one-stall garage where he built playground equipment. He would later go on to manufacture photographic equipment for Ford Motor Company in Detroit and motorcycle handle grips. In 1966, he founded David Manufacturing, a grain drying and handling equipment manufacturer. He was also known for creating and painting numerous signs for different organizations in the area.
David was chairman of the Mason City Foundation and an elected member of the Parks and Recreation Board. He was a member of the Noon Rotary Club, Toastmasters, Mason City Historical Society, First United Methodist Church and Humane Society and was co-founder of the NIAD Manufacturer's Group. David also was instrumental in the Murphy Manufacturing Technology Center, which opened in 1998 on the NIACC campus.
David is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Mason City; and four half-nieces, Phyllis Palmer of Lambertville, Mich., Louise Nichols of Columbia, Mo., Linda Murphy of Santa Fe, N.M., and Pat Potts of Oklahoma City, Okla.
David was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother, Arthur Murphy.

BERNICE C. GREGSON
MASON CITY - Bernice C. Gregson, 82, of 328 13th St. S.E., died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at the Good Shepherd Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Bill Poland of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and will continue until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.

HERMAN 'SKEETER' CORY
MASON CITY - Herman 'Skeeter' Cory, 75, of 1523 N. Quincy Ave., died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., with the Rev. Pamela J. Flanigan officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery , Plymouth.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Moose Lodge service at 7 p.m. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Herman "Skeeter" Cory Memorial Fund.
Skeeter was born Jan. 7, 1924, in Mason City, the son of Basil and Lena (Lucas) Cory. He attended school in Mason City.
He married Gwen King on Dec. 18, 1948, in Northwood, and worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Company from March 8, 1945, until his retirement on July 1, 1975.
He was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, a member of the Lunker Club, Legion of the Moose and Grace United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed fishing in Canada.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen, of Mason City; daughter, Judith Winfrey and husband, Lorel, of Hampton; son, Richard Cory and his wife, Billie, of Mason City; daughter, Karen Christensen, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Cindy Cory, of Ames; grandchildren, Christie Helmer, Lynn Helmer, Damon Cory, Benjamin Cory and Jami Christensen; two great-grandchildren, Renee and Ryan Helmer; brothers, William Cory of Mason City and Ernest Cory and wife, Darlene, of Mason City; sisters, Stella Jensen and husband, Earl, of Morristown, Tenn., Alberta Crowe and husband, John, of Mason City, and Margery Pike and husband, Loy, of Fairfield, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael; three brothers, Oscar, Henry and Rueben; and one sister, Bertha Schaer.

MASON CITY - Lowell "Ozzie" Macken, 73, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Aug. 13, 1999) at the Sun City Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with the Rev. Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

HAZEL L. JENKINS
NORTHWOOD - Hazel L. Jenkins, 97, of Northwood, died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, with the Rev. Selmer G. Hernes officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery , Mason City.
