Jill A. Schultz

CORALVILLE — Jill Annette Schultz, 52, of Coralville, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2005) at Lantern Park Rehabilitation and Care Center surrounded by friends and family.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2301 East Court St. in Iowa City with the Rev. Timothy Zimmermann officiating.

Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville.

Visitation will also be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner.

Memorials may be given to the Jill Schultz Memorial Fund.

Jill was born Nov. 8, 1952, in Park Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Greimann) Anderson of Ventura, Iowa. She graduated from Ventura High School in 1971, graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Radiology and furthered her education by becoming a nuclear medical technologist.

In 1986, she transferred to the University of Minnesota in the Department of Nuclear Medicine. In 1990, she transferred to the University of Iowa and worked in the nuclear medicine department until her death.

During her professional career, she helped in training and educating many students in the field of nuclear medicine now practicing throughout the United States.

Jill had a very strong commitment for caring and comforting patients. She was a member of the American Association of Radiological Technologists and the American Association of Nuclear Medical Technologists.

Jill married Steven Schultz on July 28, 1973, at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller. Steven's grandfather, the Rev. Otto C. Schultz, performed the double ring ceremony. Jill and Steve owned and operated Willowbrook OK Hardware store in Mason City, Iowa, for 10 years.

Jill and Steve had a strong commitment for childcare and were deeply involved in the foster care program in Mason City and Iowa City, having well over 50 different children.

Jill and Steve were blessed with the birth of their son, Jonathan Schultz, on March 23, 1982. Jonathan is currently attending Iowa State University pursuing a degree in chemical engineering.

In the spring of 2003, Jill and Steve visited their son in Australia for their 30th wedding anniversary, where he was attending a study abroad program at the University of Newcastle.

In July 2003, Jill suffered a massive stoke along with surgical complications at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic, which left her in a coma until her death.

Jill's hobbies included cooking, gardening, traveling, reading books and spending time with her family and friends. Jill was also strongly involved in her church, holding various positions serving her Lord and Savior. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Jill is survived by her husband, Steven Schultz; her son, Jonathan Schultz; her mother, Dorothy Anderson; her two sisters, Jackie Mathewson and her husband of Littleton, Colo., and Carolyn Luscomb and her husband of Clear Lake; her three brothers, Robert Anderson Jr. and his wife of Ventura, Tom Anderson and his wife of Tempe, Ariz., and Greg Anderson and his wife of Edina, Minn.

Jill was preceded in death by her father, Robert Anderson; her nieces, Allison and Emily Anderson; her grandparents, Elmer and Bertha Anderson and Herman and Caroline Greimann; and her father-in-law, Philip Schultz.

Helen M. Bluhm

MASON CITY — Helen M. Bluhm, 91, of Mason City, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Jon Seda officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood- St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Helen was born Jan. 14, 1914, the daughter of Charles and Grace (Putney) Harrison, in Charles City. Helen was raised in the Charles City area and moved to Mason City with her family at the age of 10. She attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1931.

Helen worked for Clem Hebel at Legreid Farm Service for 13 years.

She was united in marriage to Edward L. Bluhm on July 6, 1936, in Charles City.

Helen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and helped out with the Girl Scouts for 16 years.

She volunteered with the auxiliary at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital. Helen also participated in the Community Chest canvas and volunteered for Cancer and Heart association collections.

Helen is survived by her granddaughters, Cheri Judge and husband, Jody, Nancy Johnson, Michelle Miller and husband, Kyle, and Chrissy Bluhm; daughter-in-law, Debbie Bluhm; great-grandchildren, Cheyne and Sawyer Lisk, Colin Stephens and Parker and Reagan Judge all of Des Moines. Helen is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Edward; an infant son, Craig; daughter, Geri Johnson; son Michael Bluhm; one grandson Dennis Edward Johnson and her three brothers, Dail, Ward and Keith Harrison.

Velma A. Jefson

FOREST CITY — Velma A. Jefson, 86, of Forest City, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2005) at Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Velma A. Jefson was born on a farm south of Forest City, Iowa, on Aug. 11, 1918, the daughter of Seth B. and Edith (Howland) Durant. She attended rural school near her home and graduated from Forest City High School. She continued her education at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn., where she received her certificate of business.

On May 17, 1939, she married Lyle Jefson at Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City. The couple made their home in Parkersburg, Iowa, for several years before returning to the family farm in Forest City

Here they spent all their married lives until entering the Good Samaritan Center together in January 1994.

Velma was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a lifelong nursery worker there and loved to care for young children.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed solving jigsaw puzzles and the newspaper jumbles, and loved to just putter around.

Velma was devoted to her family — they were her life. An eternal optimist, she saw the best in everyone and always had a smile for you.

Her children remember the steadfast enduring faith that carried her through all of life's challenges with a quiet certainty.

She is survived by her children, Lynn Jefson and wife, Mary Ann, James Jefson and wife, Clarene, Lois Kraakevik and husband, Keith, Sylvia Freeby and husband, Ken, Paul Jefson and wife, Karen, Floyd Jefson and wife, Vicki, Joyce Jefson, Judy Kuns and husband, Stuart, Elaine Meyer and husband, Stan, Bonnie Knapper and husband, Jerry, Kirk Jefson and wife, Julie, Kyle Jefson, Kathy Prolow and husband, Val. Also surviving are her 36 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; her parents; her brothers; Don and Duane Durant, her daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Don Lehto; and a grandson and granddaughter, Kris and Heather.

Donald Pletcher

BRITT — Donald Pletcher, 76, of Britt, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2005) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt surrounded by his family.

Funeral service for Donald Pletcher will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Britt Veteran's Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour prior to services at the church.

Don, the son of Lloyd and Florence Hecker Pletcher, was born July 25, 1928, in Ada, Minn. The family later moved to Iowa where he attended Hayfield schools and then farmed with his father. Don served with the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948.

Don was united in marriage with Vivian Riekena on July 31, 1947, in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple made their home in the Britt area and have lived in their current home for 49 years.

Through the years, Don worked for Kabrick Distributing, Sankey's, Buns and Son Construction, Clark's Sawmill and Winnebago Industries. He retired from Winnebago in 1984.

He owned and operated various businesses in Britt including Don's Hob Nob, The Krispie Shop, The Timber Inn and Don's Koffee Kup, where he took pride in making good meals.

In recent years, Don enjoyed running the Little Red Shack at the Hancock County Speedway.

Don loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed cutting and splitting wood and tinkering in his garage. Don had a great sense of humor and enjoyed visiting with people.

He was a member of the Britt American Legion and VFW.

Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vivian; six children: Diane Eisenman of Britt, Linda Hildman of Britt, John Pletcher and special friend, Darlene Weber, of Britt, Connie Pletcher of Mason City, Bonnie Vavrik and her husband, Bill, of Britt and Ron Pletcher and his wife, Lilia, of San Jose, Calif.; eight grandchildren: Scott Gilbert, Eric Eisenman, Todd Hildman, Michelle Hildman, Kristie Crowder, Daniel Pletcher, Nicholas Pletcher, and Karina Pletcher; six great-grandchildren: Joshua Crowder, Christopher Ramos, Jacob Crowder, Hailey Crowder, Logan Brown and Kasey Brown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Ruth and father and mother-in-law, Henry and Amanda Riekena.

Luverne ‘Bill' Ouverson

MASON CITY — Luverne "Bill" Ouverson, 83, of 1438 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2005) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with Pastor Tammy Swanson-Draheim officiating. Interment will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at Fullerton Funeral Home.

ST. ANSGAR — Almond "Al" P. Hohn, 85, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2005) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Ansgar Catholic Church with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

EAGLE GROVE — Donald Howard Gaster, 86, of Eagle Grove, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2005) at the Rotary Ann Home in Eagle Grove.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Clarion with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Committal services will be held at 2 p.m. at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield with the Rev. Bruce Wittern presiding. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.
