Betty Peters
Betty L. Peters was born February 10, 1929 at Jesup, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and LaVerne (Truax) Kies. She received her education in Waterloo, IA and attended East High School. On December 10, 1945 Betty was united in marriage to Lowell Peters at the Lutheran Parsonage in Hudson, IA. They made their home farming near Hudson until 1949 when they moved to a farm near Dysart, IA. In 1965 they moved to farm south of Dysart near Clutier. Betty remained on the farm following Lowell's death on June 23, 1980, until moving to town where she was then employed at the Dysart City Clerks office for many years. Betty then spent some time living in Waverly and then Waterloo where she volunteered at Covenant Medical Center and was known as the "Hat Lady." In June of this year she moved to reside at the Westbrook Acres Care Center in Gladbrook where her death came peacefully and in the company of her family on Monday, July 7, 2003 at the age of 74 years. Betty was a past member and employee of the Dysart County Club, was active at Zion Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of Ladies Circle. Betty loved to dance and enjoyed golfing, playing cards and following all sports especially baseball. She also loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Lowell, a son Steven in 1967, and a brother Alfred Jr. She is survived by two sons, Craig & Marilyn Peters of Gladbrook and Kevin & Cindy Peters of Dysart, a special friend, Wells "Bud" Fossler of Waterloo, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Betty's family would like to thank everyone from Cedar Valley Hospice for all the care and concern shown to her during her illness.

Agnes L. Ballard
Agnes L. Ballard was born January 6, 1908 at West Amana, IA, to George and Mary Schutterle Kimm. She attended country school south of Watkins and on September 10, 1935 she married Harry Ballard at Watkins, IA. The couple lived near Watkins and owned and operated a trucking business for many years. Harry preceded her in death on January 30, 2001. Agnes was a longtime member of the A.W.A. Club in Amana and St. Patrick's Altar and Rosary Society in Watkins. She enjoyed embroidering, quilting and gardening but her greatest joy was her grandchildren and her family. For the past three years Agnes has been a resident at the extended care wing of the Marengo Memorial Hospital. Her death came Friday morning, July 11, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids at the age of 95 years. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, George Jr., Martin, Albert, Dale, and Ervin Kimm, four sisters, Gertrude Plotz, Gladys Frimml, Wilma McMann and Marie Gerner. She is survived by daughter, Kathleen Waln and husband, Dick, Amana, IA, son, Raymond Ballard and wife, Claudette, Norway, IA, grandchildren, Susan Ballard and special friend, Terry Meeks, Belle Plaine, IA, John Ballard and wife, Erin, Mary Myers and husband, Mike, and Joe Ballard and wife, Barb, all of Norway, IA, Nancy Dvorak and husband, Mark, Keystone, IA, Gina Kolsto and special friend, Brian Klein, Amana, IA, great grandchildren, Brittany and Jamie Ballard, Kristen Myers, Dylan and Lance Dvorak and Kevin and Jordan Kolsto, brother-in-law, Francis McMann, Cedar Rapids, IA, and sister-in-law, Jeanette Collingwood, Marengo, IA.

Tootie Haack
Margaret Marie Haack was born on November 26, 1930 on a farm near Blairstown, Iowa; the daughter of Fred and Eleanor (Hansen) Christensen. Tootie, as she was known to family and friends, attended country school and graduated from Blairstown High School in 1948. On March 31, 1951, she married Richard Haack in Davenport, Iowa and they lived in Gladbrook, Iowa for a short time. They moved to Blairstown where they lived the rest of their married life. Tootie worked at the Blairstown Café for a time before staying home to raise their family. Richard passed away on November 2, 1997 and Tootie continued to live at their home. More recently, she has been a patient at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids where her death came on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at the age of 72 years. Tootie was a member of the Blairstown American Legion Auxiliary and was known for baking pies. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard and twin brother John Christensen. Tootie is survived by 2 sons; Greg and Clay Haack, both of Blairstown, a daughter Lori (Bill) Willis of La Guna Niguel, CA, 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and two sisters; Carol Peterson of Belmont, CA and Helen Kozlik of Van Horne, IA.

Elsie M. Keidel
Elsie Mae Kuhn Keidel was born October 11, 1919 in Benton County near La Porte City, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Martha (Fehr) Kuhn. She attended country school and then graduated from La Porte City High School with the Class of 1936. She then attended Cedar Rapids Business College and graduated in 1938. After graduation she was a secretary in the law office of Attorney L.J. Robertson in La Porte City. On August 9, 1942 she was united in marriage to Albert Keidel of Dysart in Lancaster, Missouri. Elsie was employed as the Librarian at the Dysart Public Library for many years and following her retirement in 1985 they moved to Waterloo to be closer to their son David and family. Elsie's death came at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo on Sunday morning, July 13, 2003 at the age of 83 years. While living in Dysart, she was a member of the Dysart Federated Woman's Club, Dysart Federated Garden Club, had served on Council on Aging, and had been Secretary on the Planning and Zoning Commission. She had also held various offices in the planning of the Dysart Centennial in 1973, including being the chairperson of the Dysart Centennial Book and also the Treasurer on the Board of the Dysart Centennial Committee. She also was a member of the Dysart United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, and two brothers, Roy and Harold of La Porte City and is survived by her husband Albert of Waterloo, one son David and wife Cinda and one granddaughter Cara all of Cedar Falls and a half-brother Emery Kuhn of La Porte City. Elsie's services will be held at the United Methodist Church with burial at the Dysart Cemetery.

Sue Hoffman
Suzanne Mary Sager Hoffman was born May 17, 1941 in California to Clifton and Shirley Stokdyke Sager. She grew up in the Milwaukee, WI area and attended the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, and Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA, where she received a paralegal degree. On January 2, 1960 she married Charles Fred Hoffman in Brandon Iowa and the couple lived in Cedar Rapids and Vinton, where Sue worked as a legal assistant for over 17 years at the Milroy and Eckhart Law Firm. In 1997, Fred and Sue retired to Lake of the Ozarks, MO. They attended Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton and Sue enjoyed playing bridge, boating, collecting panda bears, working at her computer and spending time with her granddaughters. Sue's death from cancer came Sunday, July 13, 2003 at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City, MO. She was preceded in death by her son, Tom in 1995 and a sister, Barbara Sager. She is survived by her parents, Clifton and Shirley, her husband, Fred, her son Fred of Cedar Rapids, her daughter Cheryl Hanniford and husband, Michael, and granddaughters, Claire and Bella of Pleasant Hill, IA, her sister Diane Nielsen and husband Finn, of Englewood, CO, and 2 nieces.

Mary Kay Ackman
Mary Kay Ackman was born September 4, 1959 at Manchester, IA, the favorite fourth child of Carl and Bettie Wessel Ackman. Mary grew up on a farm between Dysart and La Porte City, graduating from Dysart-Geneseo High School in 1978. She was a Certifed Nurses Aid and worked in Dysart, Waverly and for the past twenty plus years at the Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton, where she was also an activity coordinator. Mary enjoyed crafts and spending time with her friends and co-workers, but her favorite activity was spoiling her nieces and nephews. Mary's death from cancer came peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family and friends, on Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the age of 43 years. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents and a nephew, Denis Gallagher. She is survived by her two brothers, Skip Ackman and wife, Tammy, of Clarksville, IA, Dan Ackman and wife, Barb, of Buckingham, IA, three sisters, Linda Nelson of Cedar Falls, IA, Leah Gallagher and husband, Tom, of La Porte City, IA, and Karen Ackman and friend, Barry Holst, of Vinton, nephews; David Murray and friend Kristi, Jeremy Murray and friend, Alia, Robert Murray and friend, Julie, Paul Gallagher, Mitchell Ackman and Logan Holst, nieces; Nikki Gallagher and friend, Shawn, Carly Ackman, Katlyn Gallagher, Angie, Lizzie, Nick and Michael Howard and Dallas Nejedly.

Gary Ferrie
Gary Eugene Ferrie was born on September 7, 1948 in Oelwein, Iowa; the son of Lester & Eleanor (VanDanAker) Ferrie. When Gary was a young boy his family moved to the community of Waterloo, and he attended the East High School. He was a teenager when his mother passed away and his father re-married, his second wife Dorothy became a dear second mother to Gary. On December 31, 1970 Gary was united in marriage to Claudette Clemens Showers and they made their home in Waterloo. In 1998 they moved to Plainfield, Iowa and in 2000 they made Fairbank, Iowa their home. Gary was a lifelong semi driver, he spent 20 years with Rock Island Millwork (later Huttig) and recently was working with Ryder Logistics. During his lifetime Gary was a very outgoing person, always willing to attend a 'Shindig' or 'Gathering,' he loved fishing, puttering around his home, and spending time with his family was a priority in his life. He was also very close to his pets, Nuti his dog, and Flippy & Max his cats. Gary was also a member and strong supporter of AA.
Gary passed away on Friday, July 25, 2003 from an apparent heart attack at the Mercy Hospital ER in Oelwein. He was 54 years old. Gary was preceded in death by his father, birth mother and 1 sister; Lois Walitshek. He is survived by his wife; Claudette Ferrie of Fairbank, his mother; Dorothy Ferrie of Waterloo, 1 son and his wife; Noel & Becky Showers of Waterloo, 2 daughters and their husbands; Tami & David Jasper of Oelwein, Tesi & Jason Snyder of Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, 2 brothers; Robert and his wife Sue of Plainfield, Tom of Kearney, NE, 2 sisters and their husbands; Eileen & Gene Dvorak of Waterloo, Donna & Bill Landis of Hiawatha, 4 grandchildren; Katie, Brandon, Brianna & Christine, and 1 brother-in-law; Harold 'Mic' Walitshek of Waterloo.

Shirley Blasberg
Shirley J. Blasberg was born April 27, 1931 in Waterloo the daughter of Selmer and Hazel Crowell Erie. She was united in marriage to Lavern J. Blasberg on August 14, 1949 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Shirley was employed as a bookkeeper for many years until retiring. She loved playing cards, dining out and family gatherings. She delighted in picking on others as well as being picked on herself. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends and she was known to occasionally drop a nickel into a slot machine. Shirley dearly loved her family. Shirley died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 72. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Lavern in 1979 and a brother Dean Erie. Shirley is survived by 3 sons, Larry and wife Annette Blasberg, Vern and wife Mindy Blasberg all of West Des Moines, and Daryl and fiancée Liz Sellers of Farmington, MO; 2 grandchildren; one sister Diane and husband Aaron Thornton of West Des Moines. Shirley will be greatly missed.

Vincent Barta
Vincent Louis Barta was born on October 26, 1910 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Vincent Louis and Margaret Barta. He was raised in Waterloo and received his education at East High School. On May 18, 1935, Vince married Blanche Douglass and they made their home in Waterloo all their married life. Vince worked for 26 years at the Waterloo Water Works. After his retirement from there, he worked part-time for the Waterloo Parks Commission, taking care of the flowers. For the past few years, Vince and Blanche have made their home at the Rosewood Estates in Waterloo. They had just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Vince passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at the age of 92 years. He was a member of Trinity American Lutheran Church and had served as head usher. Vince enjoyed his family, fishing and flowers. He loved watching old westerns on television and did oil paintings with different scenery. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sister, Ann Margaret Barta in infancy, a sister Helen Barta Geick and two brothers, Ed and Harry Barta. Vince is survived by his wife Blanche of 68 years, a daughter Karen Barta Hutzell and husband Larry of West Des Moines, Ia., and a grandson Brian Hutzell and wife Hitomi of Cambridge, MA. Memorials may be directed to Trinity American Lutheran Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Jeanine Alice White
Jeanine Alice White was born December 23, 1931 in Waterloo to Isaac and Mareta (Graves) Gushard. She graduated form West High School and had been employed as a nurses aide at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center for many years. Jeanine married Bernard Sampica in Waterloo, and they were later divorced. On July 22, 1974, she married Scottie H. White in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Survived by Scotttie her beloved husband of 29 years; a son Steven Sampica and wife Karen of Waterloo; a daughter Becky Wright of Evansdale; 2 stepsons-Scottie H. White, Jr. and wife Danna of Mount Pleasant, James W. White and wife Barb of California; 5 stepdaughters- Robyn Zeske of Minnesota, Kim Thoren of Janesville, Debra Bocock of Cedar Falls, Juanita Youngblood of Waterloo, and Candie Neilson of Indiana; a sister Yvonne Milligan and husband Don of Waterloo; 18 grandchildren; 16 step grandchildren; and 3 step greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Jeanine will be greatly missed.

George Garwood
George J. Garwood was born November 17, 1921 in Chicago, IL to Anna (Siepman) and Delbert Garwood. After he was 6 months old, they moved to Norway, IA. He received his education in Norway, graduating in 1939. George left in 1940 to attend nurses training at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Chicago where he graduated in 1943. In July 1944, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the medial corp and was stationed in Italy, serving in World War II, being discharged in 1946. He married Marie Choyce in 1945 in Chicago, IL where they lived until 1956. George and Marie then moved to Vinton where he became Hospital Administrator of Virginia Gay Hospital until retiring in 1983. George's death came suddenly at his home on Saturday evening, October 4, 2003, at the age of 81 years. George was instrumental in assisting male nurses commissioned in entering the service. He will always be known for his service to the community of Vinton. George was always there to lend a helping hand and always had a kind word to say about everyone. The employees that worked for him at the hospital were an important part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Bernadine Marks and Ila Duncalf, and three brothers-in-law. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie, daughters Karen (Paul) Brown of St. Louis, MO & Carol (Ben) Geater of Vinton, sons George (Nancy) of Ottumwa and Alan of Vinton; 12 grandchildren Travis (Lora) Headrick, Stephanie (Jay) McKee, JoLynne (Dave) Roster, Teresa Richardson, Donald and Dennis Garwood, Danny (Wendy) Garwood,Brian (Krista) Schlief, Kris Geater, Brad Geater, Julia Brown and Paul Brown II, ten great-grandchildren, brothers Virgil (Rita), Dennis (Pat) and Merle (Leota), all of Cedar Rapids, and sisters Marcella Olson of Belle Plaine and Jane (Rich) Himmelsbach of Norway. A memorial has been established.

Leona Velky
Leona Mae Velky was born in Oneida Township near Clutier, Iowa on December 31, 1929, the daughter of Joseph & Hermina (Podhajsky) Pokorny. Leona was raised near Clutier and graduated from Clutier High School. Leona was united in marriage to Jerry Velky on November 23, 1948, where they made their home on a farm near Clutier.
Leona's joy in life was being a wife, mother and grandmother. She had six children, twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild, which were the center of her life. Leona's faith was the other pillar of her life. She was a life long member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier, and was active in the I.C. Rosary Society, National Catholic Society of Foresters and the Catholic Workman.
Approximately 2½ years ago, Leona was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She handled her illness with grace and strength. Leona's interests were her garden, church, keeping the family homestead looking neat, being a good neighbor, spending time at the family pond, and traveling, especially to the Czech Republic to see Jerry's homeland. Religion was very important to Leona. She believed God answered many of her prayers. Leona said to her family, "With much prayers, and keeping God in our lives, I truly believe he has blessed our marriage and our children."
On Saturday, October 4, 2003, Leona passed away at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo at the age of 73, with her husband Jerry, and her children by her side. Leona was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Jerry, six children, Ken (Laurie) of Clutier, Mary (Mike) DeVries of Warrensburg, Mo., Jim (Chrys) of Ogden, Julie (Mike) Murray of Cedar Rapids, John of Davenport, and Tom (Danielle) of Ottumwa; twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild; her step-mother, Mamie Pokorny of Sunrise Care Center of Traer, her sister, Dorothy Hanus of Traer, her brothers, Ernest Pokorny of Traer, Lester Pokorny of Clutier, and Bernard Duhacek of MN.

Mary Ann McNeal
Mary Ann McNeal was born October 3, 1927 at Watkins, IA, to Joseph and Lillian (Kimm) Wessling. She attended school in Norway before the family moved to Mt. Auburn where she finished her schooling. On November 4, 1953 she married Raymond McNeal in La Porte City, IA, and Ray and Mary Ann lived in the Mt. Auburn area their entire married life. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and gardening in her spare time. Following a sudden illness, her death came Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton at the age of 76 years. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 50 years, Raymond, Mt. Auburn, IA, daughters Catherine Draper and husband, Walter, Louise Lazenby and husband, Bill, son Don McNeal and wife, Karen, all of Vinton and daughter Carol Dill and husband, David, Rock Hill, SC, brothers Ralph Wessling and wife, Marge, Vinton, IA, and
Mark Wessling and wife, Theresa, Watkins, IA, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren.
