June 28, 1932 - October 20, 2006

A memorial has been established in Dee's memory of the Great River Hospice Building Fund.

Mrs.Delores “Dee” Shay, 74, of Burlington, died at 9:00 PM Friday, October 20, 2006 in the home of her daughter.

Born June 28, 1932 in Hastings, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harry and Carrie Gail Euans. On October 11, 1952 she married Russell “Russ” D. Shay in Griswold, Iowa. He died May 31, 1995.

Mrs. Shay was a graduate of Elliott High School in Elliott, Iowa, she was a homemaker, and was of the Methodist faith. She enjoyed playing all types of cards and crocheting.

Survivors include her three children; Cynthia “Cindy” (John) Newberry of rural New London, Shana Boulton of Burlington, and Steven (Lori) Shay of Thermopolis, Wyoming; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister Peg (Marv) Embree of Elliott, Iowa.
Her parents, her husband, three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Erma E. Sheckler

July 9, 1903 - September 21, 2006

A memorial has been established for West Burlington United Methodist Church

Erma Elizabeth Sheckler, 103, of Monticello, Iowa and formerly of West Burlington, Iowa died at 2:53 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2006, at Monticello Nursing Home in Monticello.

Born July 9, 1903 at rural Middletown, Iowa, she was the daughter of Fredrick W. and Wilhelmina “Minnie” Schmidt Heuer. In August of 1929 she married James H. Sheckler in Burlington. He died December 17, 1992.

Mrs. Sheckler was a homemaker and had received training as a country schoolteacher, which she did prior to her marriage.

She was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church. She was a marvelous seamstress and could sew anything.

Survivors include son, Jim Sheckler of Marion, Iowa, twins, Edgar R. Sheckler of Monmouth, Illinois and Esther Mathias of Terre Haute, Indiana, and son, Lewis R. Sheckler of Radford, Virginia; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Sperfslage of Burlington.

Her husband, parents, two sisters, three brothers, one in infancy preceded her in death.

Frances Mary Shepherd
August 1, 1920 - September 14, 2006

Frances Mary Shepherd, 86, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 2:05 p.m. Thursday, September 14, 2006, at Burlington Care Center.

Born August 1, 1920 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Rueben James and Florence Sheets Bowman. On September 16, 1939 she married Robert Chancellor Shepherd in Kahoka, Missouri. He died August 1, 2002.

Mrs. Shepherd was a homemaker. She was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, antiques and “yard saling”, and loved to cook for her family and their big family get togethers.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Shepherd (Jerry) Fenton and Vicky Shepherd of Burlington; one son, Tim Shepherd of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Jerry Fenton, Jr., Beth Betz, Jennifer Fenton-Schuster, Jolie Shepherd-Veretennikova, Julie “Birdy” Fenton, Jason Shepherd and Crystal Shepherd; six great grandchildren, Amanda, Matthew, Mackenzie, Roman, Lily and Aleksandra; and two sisters, Virginia McGinity and Margaret Donlan both of Burlington.
Her husband; two sons, Robert Shepherd and Dr. Donald Shepherd; and six brothers, James Bowman, Bill Bowman, Harold Bowman, Ralph “Tom” Bowman, Jackie Bowman, and Donald Bowman preceded her in death.

James "Jim" Edwin Short
August 22, 1936 - January 8, 2006

-Visitation: Wednesday, January 11th from 8:00 to 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel

- Family will receive Friends: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday in Lunning Chapel

-Special Services: Rosary 3:00 PM and Christian Wake Service 6:00 PM

- Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, January 12th at 10:30 AM in St. Paul's Catholic Church Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf will be the Celebrant

- Interment: Aspen Grove Cemetery

James “Jim” Edwin Short, 69, of Burlington died Sunday, January 8, 2006, at his home. Born August 22, 1936 in Mount Pleasant he was the son of Vern Edwin and Dolores Matilda Siefken Short. On September 7, 1957 he married Patricia Joan Byrne at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Burlington.

Mr. Short was a graduate of Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was a Navy veteran serving from 1954 until 1957.

Mr. Short was an electrician for I.B.E.W. Local 13 for 40 years retiring in 2002. He was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church of Burlington. He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed trapping, cross stitching, flower and vegetable gardening and karaoke.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Short of Burlington; two daughters, Denise (Mike) Bruner of Trenton, Missouri and Deborah (Greg) Lewis of Cedar Rapids; one son, Darren (Stephanie) Short of Wapello; five grandchildren, Troy and Travis Bruner, Lauren Lewis, and Sam and Casey Short; one sister, Delores (Jim) Springfield of Yakima, Washington; four stepsisters, Edie (Kenny) Moore, Doris (Leland) Talbott, Nancy (Don) Alexander and Merlene White all of Monmouth, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents and one brother, Richard Short, preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established for the Wapello Athletic Association.

Larry Allen Shultz
January 9, 1948 - October 1, 2006

Larry Allan Shultz, 58, of Burlington, Iowa and formerly of Mediapolis, Iowa, died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, October 1, 2006, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 9, 1948 in Burlington, he was the son of Lloyd and Hazel Rice Shultz. On December 16, 1967 he married Marjorie A. Bundy in Gladstone, Illinois

Mr. Shultz was a 1966 Mediapolis High School graduate. He was an Army veteran of the Viet Nam era. He worked in production at General Electric for 34 years, retiring in 2003. He was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Shultz enjoyed hunting and fishing and in his retirement, enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Shultz of Burlington; two sons, Jeff (Michelle) Shultz of Streator, Illinois and Greg (Jaime) Shultz of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Sabrina Oberholtzer, and Kaleb, Carter and Ashley Shultz; one brother, Frank Shultz of Burlington and three sisters, Goldie Shultz of Rensselaer, Indiana, Elizabeth Beem of Lancaster, California, and Lillian (Bob) Achord of Burlington.

His parents preceded him in death.

Alliene Frances "Skip" Sisco
November 19, 1920 - October 2, 2006

-Funeral Service: Friday, October 6th, at 1:30 PM in Lunning Chapel.

Alliene Frances “Skip” Sisco, 85, of Burlington was born to eternal life at 12:20 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2006, at Davenport Good Samaritan Center in Davenport, Iowa.

Born to life on November 19, 1920, in Murrayville, Illinois she was the daughter of Charles LeRoy and Grace Lukeman Dyer. In August of 1940, she married Paul E. Thrasher. They later divorced. On December 31, 1957 she married Howard E. Sisco. He was born to eternal life on March 4, 1989.

Mrs. Sisco was a 1937 graduate of Fort Madison High School. She was of the Methodist faith. She worked at Benner Tea Company/Giants as a cashier/bookkeeper until it became Aldi’s. She then worked as a teller for F&M Bank and Trust until her retirement in 1987.

She was a member of Women of the Moose, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, bumper pool and shuffle board; and was also a Chicago Bears football and St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan.

Survivors include four daughters, Pat Connelly and Sandra (Vallin) Albright both of Davenport, Paula (Bob) Ryan of Burlington and Sharon Spotts of Denver, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren.

Her husband, parents, two brothers and one sister preceded her into eternal life.

William "Bill" D. Skerik
July 11, 1941 - April 8, 2006

William “Bill” D. Skerik, 64, of Burlington, died at 6:00 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006, at his residence.

Born July 11, 1941 in Burlington, he was the son of Joseph Franklin and Mary Lou Moss Skerik. On August 9, 1960 he married Laurine “Rene” Ann Belger in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Skerik was president of Skerik Auto Parts with stores in Burlington, Mt. Pleasant, and Fort Madison, which are now owned by Car Quest. He worked for 45 years. Bill and Rene lived in Mt. Pleasant where he was in charge of the Mt. Pleasant store, until May of 1966. When his father died suddenly they moved back to Burlington.

He was a 1959 graduate of Norte Dame High School. He was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church. He was a past member of Burlington Kiwanis Club, Burlington Golf Club, Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department and a past board member of Federated Automotive Group.

Survivors include, his wife Rene Skerik of Burlington; two sons, Brian (Maryellen) Skerik of Lombard, Illinois and Darren (Soila) Skerik of Burlington; two daughters, Debbie (Bob) Caffrey and Lisa (Dave) Weyls both of Burlington; nine grandchildren, Katie, Joe, Jenna, Josh, Jeremy, Nicholas, Tia, Brittny, and Ali; and two brothers, Rick Skerik of Burlington and Mike Skerik of California; Aunts; Uncles; Nieces; Nephews; Cousins; Sisters and Brothers-in-Law.

His parents and one brother preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

John Haines Slocum
November 3, 1915 - January 11, 2007

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Hospice and YMCA
for children to attend Camp McBride and to assist needy children enjoy membership

John Haines Slocum 91, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday, January 11, 2007, at Great River Medical Center – Klein Center.

Born November 3, 1915 in Atlanta, Missouri, he was the son of Roy M. and Ruth Haines Slocum. On September 27, 1940 he married Maxine M. Alley in Burlington.

Mr. Slocum was a Navy Veteran of World War II serving from 1944 until 1946 as a 2nd Class Petty Officer, aviation metal smith. He retired from J.I. Case as Quality Control Manager in 1978, after 40 years of service.

Mr. Slocum was a member of Masonic Lodge, Eagles, Carthage Lake Hunting and Fishing Club, American Legion, Case Plant Retirees, Old Timers Baseball Reunion and the YMCA. Because of his love for sports he became a Burlington resident. He played baseball with several teams here and also played in the Minor League for the Cardinals. In addition he boxed with the Golden Gloves and played basketball. His passion was to watch his grandson race.

Survivors include his wife of over 66 years, Maxine M. Slocum of Burlington; one son, Steven (Trudy) Slocum of Burlington; one daughter, Diane (Edward) Timmerman of Burlington; two grandchildren, Jennifer Slocum and Traci Timmerman; one great granddaughter, Isabelle Slocum; two brothers, Joe Slocum of Santa Ana, California and Richard Slocum of Mountain View, California; two sisters, Dorothy Lawson of Edina, Missouri and Maureen Swearingen of Portland, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His grandson, Brenton Slocum; parents; and two sisters, Lauran Louise Sackett and Helen Yantis preceded him in death.
