Vincent William Benac

Vincent William Benac, 78, of 900 E. 15th St. S. died of complications of a stroke Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. martin Hoesch of Grace Lutheran Church in Newton officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home where the family will be available. Memorials will be accepted in his name to the Grace Lutheran Church or to Hospice of Jasper County.

The son of Anton and Lena (Golic) Benac, he was born Sept. 2, 1925, in Rathbun. He attended Rathbun schools. On March 19, 1949, he married Leola C. Kingery in Newton. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He worked for the Maytag Company, Benac Plate Glass in Newton for 20 years and Mobile Glass in Des Moines. He retired Sept. 20, 1990. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Newton.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Linda Gail Benac of Georgia; three daughters and sons-in-law, Anna and Chuck Braaksma of Kellogg and Carolyn and Don Little and Teresa and Les Morgan, all of Newton; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Marion of Newton, Frank of Oregon and John of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Tina and Kathryn.

Helen (Schoondyke) Strange

SPRING BRANCH, Texas — Helen (Schoondyke) Strange, 89, of Spring Branch, Texas, formerly of Newton, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Chapel in the Cove in Spring Branch, Texas.

The daughter of George and Minnie Wade, she was born June 13, 1914, in Carlisle. She lived in Des Moines, Colfax and Newton. She worked as Deputy Clerk of Court for Jasper County for 23 years. She married Dale Strange of Denver, Colo., on Feb. 20, 1972. They moved to Spring Branch, Texas, in 1976.

She is survived by her husband, Dale Strange; daughter-in-law, Betty Schoondyke, of Windsor Heights; a sister, Marjorie Griffin, of Newton; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four nephews and nieces; and several great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Schoondyke and a sister, Iva Wilson.

Kenneth Duane Pollard

Kenneth Duane Pollard, 81, of Newton died of heart failure Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Jim Olson of Zoar Church in rural Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to the American Cancer Society.

Henry D. Irish

Henry D. Irish, 76, of 414 W. 3rd St. S. died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at First Assembly of God Church in Newton with the Rev. Ed Aubuchon officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery . Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.

The son of Guy and Alice (Perry) Irish, he was born June 26, 1927, in Kiowa, Colo. He was a graduate of Cabool High School in Cabool, Mo., in 1945 and earned a master's degree in theology. He was given two honorary doctorate degrees. On June 28, 1946, he married Virginia V. Long in Springfield, Mo. He was an administrator for several school districts in Iowa. He had been an administrator/teacher for two Bible colleges. He preached for several small churches that were without a pastor. He worked for the Maytag Company for more than 13 years and retired in 1992. He and his wife owned and operated Donut Land in Newton from 1980 to 1990.

Mr. Irish was an active member of the First Assembly of God Church in Newton and was a licensed minister with the Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed reading and studying the Bible and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He grew up in Missouri and lived in several communities in Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Irish of Eldridge; three daughters and sons-in-law, Beck and Jeff Wiltgen of Rogers, Ark., Kathy and Greg Hartgraves of Bothell, Wash., and Cindy and Jim Erlemeier of Duluth, Minn.; six grandchildren; a sister, Myrtle Folk of Springfield, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and five sisters.

Triny Jansen

SULLY — Triny Jansen, 94, of Sully died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Sully Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Jack Gray officiating. Burial will be at Sully Cemetery.

Friends may call today at the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella where the family will be present from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Bible League or "Back to God Hour." The family invites the friends and relatives to return to the basement of the Sully Christian Reformed Church following the burial service.

The daughter of Dick and Anna (Hoksbergen) Van Wyk, she was born Sept. 14, 1909, in rural Sully. She attended the Dairy Grove Country Grade School in Jasper County until the sixth grade, when she attended the Sully Christian Grade School finishing the eighth grade. At the age of four her parents moved the family to a farm southwest of Sully. Triny made her home with her parents helping her mother with household duties as well as other neighboring farm families. She did this until Jan. 28, 1931, when she married Cornelius E. Jansen in Sully. Cornie and Triny continued to farm his parent's farmstead following their marriage until 1970 when they retired and moved to Sully. They both lived in this home the remainder of their lifetimes. She was active at church and taking care of her home and family. Triny lived at home until her health needs required more advanced attention and she went to the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.

Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Lilburn and Geneva Jansen of New Sharon, Charlene and Kenneth Van Maanen of Sully and Marchlle Jansen of Pella; her daughter-in-law, Lois and John Lanser of Pella; seven grandchildren; six step- grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grandchildren.

Sarah Elizabeth Schildroth

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — Sarah Elizabeth Schildroth, 2 months, of Douglasville, Ga., died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Douglasville with Dr. John Pennington officiating. Burial will follow at Rosehaven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Whitley-Garner of Rosehaven Funeral Home in Douglasville, Ga., Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sarah Elizabeth Schildroth Memorial Fund, c/o First Baptist Church of Douglasville, 5900 Priestly Mill Rd., Douglasville, Ga. 30135.

Local survivors include her great-grandparents, Dorothy Richards of Kellogg, Erma Richardson of Newton and Bill and Nina Buckingham of Reasnor.

Harry F. Gaass

PRAIRIE CITY — Harry E. Gaass, 88, of Prairie City died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services are pending at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City.

Dale Verwers

Dale Verwers, 65, of Newton died today, Dec. 3, 2003 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Services are pending at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

Ruby Bollhoefer

INMAN, S.C. — Ruby Bollhoefer, 76, of Inman, S.C., formerly of Newton, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Spartanburg Regional in South Carolina. Graveside services will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. at Newton Union Cemetery with Rev. Beverlee Bell officiating.

Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. No visitation is scheduled. Memorials may be made in her name and left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Ira and Edith (Cannon) Bell, she was born Sept. 7, 1927 in Newton. She was a graduate of Newton High School. She married Marvin D. Bollhoefer and worked as a secretary and a homemaker. She also lived in Cedar Rapids and West Chicago, Ill. and retired to Arizona before moving to Inman, S.C. in 2002. She and her husband enjoyed traveling around the world.

Survivors include two brothers, Max Bell and Ed Bell of Des Moines; a half-sister, Ann Schuele of Knoxville, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother.

Louis P. Frahm

Louis P. Frahm, 85, of 210 E. 19th St. N., died Monday, Dec. 1 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Pastor Jim Olson of Zoar Church in rural Newton officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call Wednesday after 1 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Zoar Church or Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Herman John Henry and Conradena Sophia (Herzog) Frahm, he was born Dec. 23, 1917 in rural Newton. He attended Salem and Hope Ridge Country Schools and graduated from Newton High School in 1937. On May 30, 1948 he married Bevery J. Staker in Davenport. He was a farmer and a bus driver for the Newton Community School District for 16 1/2 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Zoar Church in rural Newton.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Kelvin R. and Connie Frahm of Kellogg; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy E. and John Kelting of Waterloo; three step-grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marjorie Morris.

Michael Todd Hunt

DES MOINES — Michael Todd Hunt, 42, son of Gloria Hunt of Newton, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Agnes Patterson Memorial Park, 3004 4th Ave. E. in Newton. In case of rain, services will be at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church at 223 E Fourth St. N. in Newton. The Rev. Merle Smith will officiate.

Hamilton Funeral Home in Des Moines is handling arrangements. Memorials may be sent to Gloria Hunt, 623 E71/2 St. N. Apt.11 in Newton.

Bertha M. McConeghey

Bertha M. McConeghey, 85, of Newton died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Park Centre in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Newton with Sue Woods, licensed minister of Disciples of Christ, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery . Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to First Christian Church or to Willowbrook Adult Day Care and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.

The daughter of Frank Lester and Florence Verna (Starrett) Hummel, she was born Dec. 29, 1918, in Newton. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1939. On May 8, 1940, she married Robert W. McConeghey in Newton. She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church. She enjoyed working with flowers, gardening, baking, sewing, fishing and camping.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Paris Becket of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Karen McConeghey of Urbandale; three granddaughters; three step-granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Forrest Hummel; and a sister, Doris (Hummel) Kier.

Mark E. Schakel

Mark E. Schakel, 80, of Newton died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 at his home.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery . Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from noon unti 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Jasper County Historical Museum or to the First United Methodist Church.

The son of Peter and Bessie (Grandia) Schakel, he was born June 29, 1924, in Pella. He graduated from Pella High School in 1942 and from Iowa State University in 1947. On June 29, 1945, he married Phyllis Ver Steeg in Pella. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Schakel taught agriculture at the Newton Senior High School and worked as a field man for Farm Bureau before joining the Jasper County Savings Bank. He worked for the bank for 36 years and retired as executive vice president in 1989.

Mr. Schakel was a member of First United Methodist Church, Jasper County Farm Bureau and American Legion Post 111. He lived in Pella from 1924 to 1942, in Des Moines from 1942 to 1945, in Ames from 1945 to 1947 and was a resident of Newton since 1947.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Mark E. Schakel II of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Schakel of Washington, D.C., Julie and Dennis Earhart of West Des Moines and Kristen S. and Olin Webb of Irving, Texas; one grandchild; and two sisters, Nadine Fryman of Palm Springs, Calif., and Donna Campbell of Ventura, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.
