John Warntjes
12/22/1932 - Friday, April 24, 2009

JOHN H. WARNTJES, 76, of Hull, IA died Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Sanford Sheldon Hospital in Sheldon, IA.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:30AM at the First Reformed Church of Hull with Rev. Verlyn Boone, officiating. Interment will follow in Hope Cemetery of Hull.

Visitation will be held Monday at the First Reformed Church of Hull from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM.

The Warntjes Family prefers memorials to the Beecin Foundation, P.O. Box 492, Primghar, IA 51245-0492.

John Henry Warntjes was born December 22, 1932, the son of John and Marie (Van Maanen) Warntjes. John served two years in the US Army, stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia during the Korean War.

John was united in marriage to Eleanor Jean Boeve, the daughter of Henry and Ella Boeve, on May 13, 1955 in Hull. They were blessed with a daughter and four sons. John farmed southeast of Hull, and later was employed as a rural mail carrier.

John was a member of the First Reformed Church of Hull. Over the years he served as a deacon, elder and taught Catechism.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Eleanor of Hull; his five children and their spouses: Jerry and Lori Warntjes of Burlington, WI, Laura and Norm Thompson of Browerville, MN, Daryl and La Vonne Warntjes of Hull, David and Megan Warntjes of Burlington, WI and Mike and Lisa Warntjes of Fond du Lac, WI along with his 21 grandchildren. Also surviving John are a brother-in-law, Melvin Van Otterloo of Hull and sister-in-law, Lois Warntjes of Littleton, CO; the Boeve in-laws: Darlene Boeve of Hull, Elizabeth Boeve of Rock Valley, Al and Cynthia Boeve of Luverne, MN, Don and Joan Boeve of Hills, MN, Art and Henrietta Boeve of Hills, MN, Dorene and Arnold Hulshof of Sioux Center, Lois and Bill Oostra of Winnieconnie, WI, Helen and Tunis Overman of Rock Rapids, Jim Boeve of Beaver Creek, MN, Lois and Roger Baatz of Rock Rapids, Gary Boeve of Sheldon, Ervin and Sarah Boeve of Tyler, MN and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his grandson, Jonathan Warntjes; his parents; a sister, Lucille Van Otterloo; a brother, Marvin Warntjes; his father-in-law and mother-in-law; and Boeve in-laws: Henry Boeve, Case Boeve, Gert and Gilbert Leusink, Everett Boeve, Merlin Boeve and Sharon Boeve.

Ed Rozeboom
12/6/1917 - Friday, May 15, 2009

Ed Rozeboom, 91, of Sioux Center, IA died Friday, May 15, 2009 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 10:30AM at First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Mark Verbruggen officiating. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 9:30AM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Rozeboom family prefers memorials be directed to CHEARS Home Health and Hospice or Sioux Center Christian School.

Edward H. Rozeboom was born December 6, 1917, in Hull, Iowa to Gerrit and Mary (Noteboom) Rozeboom. He was raised in Hull and Sioux Center where he attended country school.

He married Berniece Mouw on December 29, 1938, at Sioux Center. They were married for 63 years and were blessed with five daughters. Ed and Berniece farmed in the Sioux Center area their entire married life. He had a passion for the care of the land and work done well.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center where he served as an usher, elder and cadet leader. He was the director of the country school and later served on the Christian School and Rural Water boards.

Ed and Berniece spent many years volunteering at Rehoboth, NM Indian School, Wycliffe Bible Translators and Cary, MS. Some of his best memories are times spent helping his children and grandchildren and camping with them as well as picnicking with neighbors.

Ed is survived by five daughters: Sandy (Gary) Draayer of Sioux Center, Mary (Andy) Ploegstra of New London, MN, Beth Rozeboom of Minneapolis, MN, LeAnne Dibbet of Sioux Center and Geri (Doug) Van Holland of Sioux City, special family friend, Sheryle Kleweno, Roseville, MN 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, as well as several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Berniece; his parents; three brothers: William, Garrett and John Rozeboom; son-in-law, Stan Dibbet; three great grandchildren: Calvin, Andrew and Leah as well as several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Alice De Groot
3/10/1915 - Monday, June 08, 2009

Alice De Groot, 94, of Sioux Center died Monday June 8, 2009 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11AM at Faith Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4-9PM with the family present from 8-9PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The De Groot family prefers memorials be directed to Sioux Center Christian School or Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation.

Alice (Addink) De Groot was born March 10, 1915 to John and Jennie (Lammers) Addink on the family farm west of Sioux Center. She attended country school through the eighth grade and always enjoyed helping out on the farm. She spent many days working alongside her family with their chicken business. She also enjoyed playing softball.

On February 3, 1938, Alice married Peter De Groot. The couple first farmed south of Sioux Center until 1952, then west of Sioux Center where they farmed until they retired in 1977. After Peter passed away on November 28, 1985, Alice continued living in their Sioux Center home until March of 2007, when she became a resident of Royale Meadows Care Center.

Alice was a longtime member of Faith Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo with friends. She liked fishing and listening to her Chicago Cubs.

She is survived by her three children: Agnes “Noop” De Groot, John P. and his wife, Marlys De Groot and Allan De Groot all of Sioux Center; four grandchildren and their families: Paul and Sharon DeGroot of Manchester, MO and their children: Brianna, Joshua and Luke; Jodi and Tom Holman of Medfield, MA and their children: David John, Jessica, Nicholas and Matthew; Judy and Duane Hulstein of Orange City and their children: Christopher, Jacquelyn and Kaitlyn; John and Fonda De Groot of Sioux Center and their children: Raymond and Savannah. Also left to cherish Alice’s memory are sister, Hattie Verdoorn of Newkirk; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Hilda Addink of Sioux Center, Henry and Mary Addink of Orange City; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marion and Sadie Van Peursem of Orange City, brother-in-law, Cornie Vander Stelt of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Alice in death were her husband, Peter De Groot; her parents; grandson, Carl John De Groot; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dena and Albert Van Riessen, Gert and John De Groot, Minnie and John Byl; sister-in-law, Dorothy Vander Stelt; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Janet and Gene Wagner and Elsie and Alfred Wissink.

Heaung T. Baccam
2/4/1927 - Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Heuang Baccam, 82, of Sioux Center died Wednesday June 10, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center of Sioux City.

A Funeral service will be held Monday at 2:00PM At Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation with the family present will be held Sunday from 3-5PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center

Heuang Baccam was born on February 4, 1929 in the city of Dienvienphou, Vietnam. She was the daughter of Dam and Feng Lovan. She had four brothers and five sisters. Eight of them have passed away; one is still living, a brother in Vietnam.

Her first marriage was to Leune Lorvan. In 1954, they had two children: a son Khay and a daughter Khouang in Laos. In the same year in which the French finally lost to Vietnam, she fled from Vietnam to Laos.

In 1965, she married Eune Baccam. They had two sons: Phone and Souk, together they had raised three sons and one daughter.

In 1975, the communists took over Laos and in 1980 they fled to Thailand. Then in 1981, with the help of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, they arrived in the United States. They were baptized in 1989. The Lord has also blessed her with 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Heuang lived a very long happy life in Sioux Center with her family and friends until she finally went to be with the Lord in heaven.

Bob Schouten

Bob Schouten, 75, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30AM at Faith Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Rev. Bernie Haan officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Schouten family prefers memorials be directed to Sioux Center Christian School.

Robert “Bob” Schouten was born on a farm south of Rock Valley in 1934 to Peter and Celia (Blankespoor) Schouten. Bob grew up in Sioux Center and attended the Sioux Center Christian School and Sioux Center Public High School.

Bob volunteered for the US Army in 1953, and after basic training was sent to Germany for 18 months where he worked as a clerk typist. While overseas, he had the great pleasure of exploring his family “roots” in Holland as well as traveling throughout England and France.

Upon returning to Iowa he began to work for the Moerman Brothers as a painter for several months. Thereafter, he married Alma Jean Kroon. Later, he started working at Boeyinks Grocery Store, eventually purchasing the store which was later renamed Schouten’s Grocery.

Bob was very active in the Jaycee’s and during his involvement held many offices, including a role as President of the local chapter.

Other business ventures included a unique specialty store called “Gifts by Mr. Robert's” and later he originated a painting company called “Country Squire Decorating” with business partner Herm Vanden Hull. In later years, prior to his retirement, he worked as a nursing assistant and found great satisfaction in helping the elderly in this manner. He also continued to take on painting projects as well as working in the greenhouse at Bomgaars.

Bob’s great passion in life had been his love of gardening and flowers. Retirement allowed him to devote much time and energy to his small garden patch at the Homestead where he had resided since 1996. He became known as the “Flower Man” at the Homestead and found great joy in sharing God’s natural bounty with his fellow neighbors and friends.

He was a regular and devout member of the Faith Christian Reformed Church. Bob found immense comfort in the bond of the congregation and the many acts of unconditional kindness exhibited to him throughout the years.

Despite many trials and tribulations during his lifetime, Bob steadfastly remained a loving optimist with a distinct sense of humor. Through the grace of God and strength in his personal faith, he always found time to share his kind spirit and caring soul with his family, friends and members of his community.

He will be greatly missed by his children which include three daughters: Deb and her husband, Larry Vander Weide, Sally and her husband, Dick Koel, Kathy and her husband, Vern Rozeboom all of Sioux Center, two sons: David Schouten and his wife, Sue of Alton and Paul Schouten of Los Angeles, CA. Additionally, he will be tenderly remembered as a dear and loving brother by his surviving sisters and their spouses; Sal Kruger, Mary and Keith Bonnema and Carol and Mark Bandstra; his sister-in-law, Rose Koele and his brother-in-law, Gerald Harskamp, all of Sioux Center. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren will also miss their “Grandpa Schouten”.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, “Toots” Harskamp, his brother, Pete Schouten, Jr. and his ex-wife and the mother of his five children, Alma Jean (Kroon) Hopper. Despite their divorce, he always considered Jean to be one of his “best friends” for the remainder of his life.

Tim Altena
9/27/1968 - Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Tim Altena, 40, of Sioux Center died Wednesday June 17, 2009, after his eight year battle with cancer, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10:30AM at the Maurice First Reformed Church of Maurice, IA with Rev. Wayne Sneller officiating. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9AM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Friday from 3-8PM, with the family present from 5:30-8PM at the Maurice First Reformed Church.

Memorials are preferred in care of the Altena Family.

Timothy Paul Altena was born September 27, 1968 to Don and Carol Altena in Sioux Center. He attended Sioux Center Christian School and graduated from Western Christian High School with the class of 1987. He followed graduation with one year of college at Dordt.

On June 18, 1988, Tim married Sherri Dekker at Maurice First Reformed Church. The couple made their home in Sioux Center and Tim began working at Tyson Foods, of Sioux Center. For the past eight years he was a Network Administrator at Diamond Vogel Paint in Orange City.

Tim was a member of the Maurice First Reformed Church since his marriage. In his free time he enjoyed playing cards, working on computers and spending time outdoors hunting and fishing with his family. He also found enjoyment in car races especially sprint cars at Knoxville, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Sherri Altena of Sioux Center; three children: Ashley Staples and her husband, Barry of Sioux Center, Rick Altena and Amber Altena both at home; parents, Don and Carol Altena of Sioux Center; brother and sister-in-law, Kent and Laura Altena of Polk City, IA; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Joan Dekker of Maurice; foster mother, Schera Kraft of Le Mars, IA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Brian and Chris Dekker of Sioux City as well as several nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.

Tim is preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Margaret Altena, Gerrit and Ollie Bruxvoort and foster father, Dick Kraft.

John Feekes
10/8/1928 - Thursday, June 18, 2009

John Feekes, 80, of Sioux Center, IA died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Hillcrest Nursing Home of Hawarden.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 10:30AM at the Carmel Reformed Church of rural Rock valley, IA, with Rev. Arnold Punt officiating. Interment will follow in the Carmel Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Feekes family prefers memorials be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or Carmel Reformed Church.

Marion Brommer
3/26/1926 - Friday, July 30, 2010

Marion Brommer, 84 of Sioux Center died Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Tuesday at 9:30AM at Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 10:30AM at Central Reformed Church, with Rev. R. Van Rathbun officiating.

In lieu of flowers the Brommer family prefers memorials to CHEARS Home Health and Hospice.

Marion Ethel Brommer was born March 26, 1926 to Boyd and Helen Tronnes in George, Iowa. She lived most of her formative years near Sheldon, Iowa and graduated from Sheldon High School.

On July 14, 1945, Marion married Lester Brommer at Alamogordo, New Mexico where Lester was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base. After Lester finished his term of service the couple moved back to Sioux Center where they would be a part of the family business, Brommer Truck Line. For many years, Marion could be found working at Holiday Lanes Bowling Alley of Sioux Center.

Marion was proud to have been part of the American Legion Auxiliary for 50 year of which she served as the secretary-treasure for 25 years. She was also a longtime member of Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

In her free time she enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in various sporting events. She also liked to bowl and do crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Lester Brommer of Sioux Center; six children: Leslie (Joyce Reynolds) Brommer of Sioux Center, Rick (Sharon Dibbet) Brommer of Rapid City, SD, Mary Dell Brommer of Sioux Center, Darcy Helwig of Sioux Center, Mike (Kim Van Zee) Brommer of Norfolk, NE and Shelly (Gary) Sandbulte of Carmel, IA; daughter-in-law, Erin Brommer of Sumas, WA, 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ken File; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Don and Anne Brommer of Sioux Center, Jim and Penny Brommer of Bend OR; sister-in-law, Thelma Madsen of Okoboji, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marion was preceded in death by two sons: Brad and Robbie Brommer; granddaughter, Sarah Sandbulte; her parents, Boyd and Helen Tronnes; sister, Byrla File; brother, Dick Tronnes and brother-in-law, Bud Madsen.
