Paul E. Blair

Paul E. Blair, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, June 1, 2007 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Memorial mass for Mr. Blair will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake, with full military honors performed by AMVETS Post 66.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2007 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home where there will be a Legion of Mary Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. The family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Faith, Hope & Charity, Buena Vista Hospice, or St. Mary’s Church. Mr. Blair died on June 1, 2007 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Paul Edward Blair was born August 10, 1925 in Chula, Missouri to Edward J. and Dorothy (Westlake) Blair. He attended schools in Chula and Chillicothe, Missouri. He graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Chillicothe.

Paul joined the United States Navy at Chillicothe, Missouri and served his country as a Machinist Mate, 3rd Class. He was honorably discharged on August 10, 1946 at St. Louis, Missouri.

On July 26, 1974, Paul was joined in marriage to Rose A. Faine in Elk Point, South Dakota. They made their home in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Over the years, Paul worked as a forklift driver for HyGrade in Storm Lake. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Storm Lake Elks Club, Lake Creek Country Club and the AMVETS Post 66. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Paul will be missed by family and friends alike.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rose of Storm Lake; son David P. Blair and wife Susan of Omaha, Nebraska; son Richard A. Blair of Lincoln, Nebraska; step-children: Paula A. Roberts (Burns) of Lubbock, Texas; Anthony F. Faine and wife Kathie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Melodie K. Tate and husband Jim of Fairmont, Minnesota; Dawn M. Andersen and husband John of Weston, Florida; Rick Faine of Storm Lake; and Brenda J. Faine of Sac City, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; extended family and many friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Dorothy Blair; one sister, Laverne Mahr; and one grandson, Andrew Tate.

Leota Neppl

Leota Neppl, age 90, of Storm Lake and formerly of Fonda, Iowa, died Monday, June 18, 2007 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Neppl will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday anytime after 5:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A vigil service will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by recitation of the Legion of Mary Rosary at 7:00, both at the funeral home. Leota was born February 3, 1917 in Mt. Carmel, Iowa, the daughter of Henry J. and Anna (Goecke) Otto. She was baptized as an infant in the Catholic faith at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and later confirmed her faith as a youth at the same church. She attended grade school at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School before graduating from Carroll High School in 1934. She continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and received her teaching certificate to teach Rural School (Normal Training Degree). She taught rural school for the next three years.

On May 24, 1938, Leota was united in holy matrimony to Everett Neppl at her church in Mt. Carmel. The couple was blessed with five children. They lived and farmed in Carroll County for 12 years and in the Fonda area for 30 years. After retiring in 1980, Everett and Leota moved to Storm Lake. They enjoyed traveling until Everett’s health declined.

Leota was a loving and devoted wife and mother who cherished her family. She was a faithful Catholic and lived her life to reflect her faith. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, a past member of the Holy Family Society, and a “praying” member of the Legion of Mary. She enjoyed playing cards, walking and reading.

Survivors include her two sons: James Neppl and wife Diane of Rock Island, Illinois; and Roger Neppl and wife Jennifer of Evergreen, Colorado; her two daughters: Kay Sterbick of Des Moines, Iowa; and Diane Baskerville and husband Roger of Washington, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; other extended family and many friends.

Leota was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett; her son, Gary; her twin brother, Leo; her brother, Art; and her sisters: Loretta, Marie, Agnes and Bernadette.

Lucille M. Dannenberg

Lucille M. Dannenberg, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Monday, June 18, 2007 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be held onFriday, June 22, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

Friends may call for visitation on Thursday, June 21, 2007 from 6-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Lucille Magdalene Miller was born July 18, 1916 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Henry and Ida (Whitmer) Miller. She was a life long member of St. John Lutheran Church, receiving her baptism on August 6, 1916 and confirmation on June 23, 1929. She attended and later graduated from Storm Lake High School.

On December 28, 1944, Lucille was married to Melvin Dannenberg in Storm Lake, Iowa. This union was blessed with a daughter, Candace. Lucille and Mel lived on their farm south of Storm Lake. Lucille maintained her tax preparation office in downtown

Storm Lake until Mel’s retirement and their move to town. At that time, Lucille established her business at home.

Among Lucille’s greatest pleasures was spending time with her friends. She was a member of Wa-Tan-Ye business women’s club, where she worked at various projects alongside dear friends. Lucille was a member of several card groups and enjoyed many hours of card games with her family and friends over the years. Creating beautiful greeting cards was another hobby of Lucille’s, as she used her computer and all sorts of supplies to hand-paint and decorate each and every card.

Her pet cat, Dusty, was her constant companion and source of joy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Candace Madich and husband Robert of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister, Shirley Fliess of Las Vegas, Nevada; several nieces and many friends.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; her brother, Henry Miller and sister-in-law, Alice Miller;and brother-in-law, John Fliess.

Flora M. Rice

Flora Rice, age 100, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Friday, June 22, 2007 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Funeral Service will be Monday, June 25, 2007 at 10:30 am at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 4:00 on Sunday, June 24, 2007, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. An Eastern Star Service will be held at 7:30 pm.

Flora Mary Taylor was born February 6, 1907 in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, to Joseph Telesphere and Marie (Roy) Taylor. She joined one sister, Mary Ann, and one brother, Bill, prior to the family moving to Iroquois, Illinois. The Taylor family then welcomed three more children: Delia, Ed and Albert. The entire family eventually moved by train to the Rembrandt, Iowa area.

On April 16, 1927, Flora was united in marriage to Everett Rice in the Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa. This union was blessed with five children: Marjorie, Robert, Richard, Edward and Thomas. They lived their entire married life in Storm Lake. Initially, the family lived in a house on the south side of Storm Lake from 1927 to 1945, and then to the farm in 1945.

Flora was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church as well as a 50 year member of Eastern Star. She shared many stories of her life over the years with her family and friends.

Everett and Flora shared many adventures and memories over their 54 years of marriage. They traveled to 46 of the 50 states, as well as embarking on various cruises. Her greatest blessing was her family. She found much pleasure in their visits and joy in their company.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Marjorie Otto and her husband Arlin of Lakeside, Iowa; four sons: Robert Rice and his wife Dorothy of Denison, Iowa, Richard Rice and his wife Monica of Storm Lake, Edward Rice and Loa of Alta, Iowa and Thomas Rice and his wife Doris of Storm Lake; 19 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; many extended family and friends.

Flora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett; her five siblings: Mary Ann, Bill, Delia, Ed and Albert; two great grandchildren: Christopher Allen and April Rice.

Wesley Dean Roggensees

Wesley Dean Roggensees, age 80, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Funeral services for Mr. Roggensees will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Nemaha, with Reverend Carl Benge officiating. Burial will be in the Nemaha Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Dean was born January 31, 1927 in Holbrook, Nebraska, the son of Albert and Pearl (Robinson) Roggensees. Dean was baptized as an infant and later confirmed his faith as a youth. H received his high school diploma at the University of Nebraska Agricultural School.

On November 7, 1951, Dean was married to Genevieve Rosella Erickson in Aurelia, Iowa. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Marilyn.

Dean was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Nemaha, Iowa. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, and served as Governor of that organization for three years. Dean enjoyed fishing and camping and you might find him wherever a good game of pitch was in progress. A devoted father, Dean loved his family above all, and treasured the time he was able to share with them. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Marilyn (Lee) Cruse of Waco, Texas; grandson Joseph David (Patrice) Ihry of Lorena, Texas; grandson Eric Allen Ihry of Waco, Texas; his great-grandson, Joseph David Ihry II; a brother, Louis (Mary) Roggensees of Largo, Florida; a sister, Marilyn Buker of North Platte, Nebraska; extended family and many friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Genevieve in 1993.

Mary McKenna

Mrs. Melvin (Mary) McKenna, age 83, of Storm Lake died on August 11, 2003 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, August 14, 2003 at 2:00 p.m at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Reverends Timothy Schott and Bruce Lawler as concelebrants. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 13, 2003 after 3:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present. There will be a 3:30 Legion of Mary Rosary and a Vigil Service at 7:30.

Mary Cecelia Wright was born on December 14, 1919 to Clarence and Nellie (McCabe) Wright at Sulphur Springs, Iowa. She was baptized on Christmas Eve of 1919 at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake, where she later was confirmed. As a child Mary attended Providence Township school near Sulphur Springs, and she graduated from high school there in 1938.

Mary and John Melvin McKenna were married on May 26, 1942 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. They celebrated 61 years together in May of this year. Their union was blessed with a son and four daughters.

Mary will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who spent her life as a homemaker caring for her family. She was sustained by her great devotion to her faith and was a member and former officer of the Parish Guild, as well as a member of the Catholic Daughters at St. Mary’s. Mary enjoyed crafts and playing cards, was a member of her card clubs and also of the Hayes Farmers Club. She truly loved music of all kinds; Mary played the clarinet and delighted in dancing, cherishing special memories of dancing at the Cobblestone Ballroom in Storm Lake. Mary also took great pleasure in sharing coffee and good conversation with friends and family at the Lakeshore Café.

Mrs. McKenna is survived by her children, John McKenna of Iowa City and special friend Pam Rugger of Des Moines, Michelle Sandhoff and husband Darrald of Schaller, Patti Grindle and husband John of Jerricho, VT, Jacqueline Homampour and husband Houshang of Evanston, IL and Colette Fischer and husband Bill of Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Michael and Yvonne Sandhoff, John, Bridget and David Sandhoff, John, Patrick and Justin Grindle, Alicia, Sean and Ashley Homampour, and Elizabeth and Eric Fischer; great-grandchildren Joseph and Jessica Sandhoff; brother Jerry Wright and wife Ruth of Storm Lake; and sisters Pat Carney of Sacramento, CA and Gwen LeMer of Sacramento, CA; sister-in-law Elaine Wright; brother-in-law F. J. Carney; and nephew Scott Johnson, along with many extended family members and friends.

Mrs. McKenna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin, sister Joanne Ryan, brothers Joe Wright and Gerard Wright; and brothers-in-law, Chuck Carney, Patrick Johnson and Ben LeMer.

Michael B. Johnson

Michael B. Johnson, age 57, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a native of Storm Lake, died August 27, 2003 at his Tuscaloosa home.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 13 at 11:00 a.m., at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Reverend Duane Queen will officiate. There will be no visitation prior to the memorial service, burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery rural Albert City.

Michael Brian Johnson was born June 14, 1946 in Storm Lake, Iowa the son of Carol Kenneth Johnson and Virginia (Berg) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. He attended Storm Lake Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1964.

As a fifth grader, Michael chose the trumpet to play in the 5th Grade Band and that proved to be the beginning of long and successful music career. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Morningside College in Sioux City and then continued his education at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln where he earned his Masters Degree in Music.

At the time of his death, Michael was on the faculty at the University of Alabama School of Music in Tuscaloosa where he had served as instructor of trumpet since 1971. He performed professionally with a wide variety of ensembles throughout his distinguished career including the Karl King Band, the orchestras of Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Lincoln, Omaha, Tuscaloosa and the Alabama Symphony.

Michael leaves a legacy of many former students who are now employed as teachers and performers throughout the country. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues and remembered for his zest for life, for his enormous heart and his independent spirit.

He was a talented gourmet cook and enjoyed collecting classic cars and loved scouring the countryside for antique furniture. Michael also had an extensive collection of antique trumpets and firearms.

He is survived by several aunts and cousins including: Kenneth & Betty Armstrong, Storm Lake, Billie and Charlotte Meyer, Ruthven, Marlyss and Bill Bryant, Larrabee, Nila Miller, Aurelia, Nola and Glen Carlson, Storm Lake, Laura and Marlin Weier, Linn Grove, Darold and Karen Berg, Boone, Ron and Grace Berg, Sartell, Minnesota, Merridee Matson, Carrollton, Texas, and Karen Berg, Aurora, Colorado,

He was preceded in death by his father on October 30, 2000 and by his mother on May 1, 2001.

A memorial fund in Michael’s name has been established, with the proceeds to go to the Storm Lake High School Band Department.

Mildred E. Bartels

Mildred E. Bartels, age 83, of Storm Lake died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Saturday, August 2, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m.

Mildred E. Bartels was born November 15, 1919 to Herman and Maria (Schweer) Bartels at Tobias, Nebraska. She was baptized November 27, 1919 and confirmed April 9, 1933 at the Zion Lutheran Church at Tobias. She received her education at Zion Lutheran Parochial School at Tobias.

Mildred moved to Storm Lake in the spring of 1938. She did house work for different families for the next ten years. At that time she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake. She transferred her membership to St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake in 1948.

Starting in 1949, Mildred began working for Drs. Hansen and Prescott at the Buena Vista Clinic until she retired in 1987. She taught Sunday School at St. John’s for 18 years. She was a member of the Choir and the Altar Guild.

Mildred is survived by two brothers, Victor and wife Mathilda Bartels and Eldo and wife Neoma Bartels both of Storm Lake, and a nephew, Dan and wife Desiree Bartels.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Gertrude.
