Loren Tjaden

Loren Tjaden, age 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Monday, March 1, 2004 at his home near Sulphur Springs in Buena Vista County, Iowa.

Services will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, with Pastor Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery near Ocheyedan, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, February 4, 2004 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friends who desire to send condolences may do so online.

Loren Tjaden was born on May 18, 1930 to Earl and Myrtle (Davids) Tjaden at Ocheyedan, Iowa. He grew up on his parents’ farm near Ocheyedan, attending school there.

On November 4, 1950, Loren was united in marriage to Myrtle I. (Marnie) Lemker at Jackson, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with three sons, Steve, Dan and Dave, and one daughter, Lori. During his life, Loren worked at Sibley Concrete in Sibley, at Hy-Grade and IBP in Storm Lake. He also enjoyed helping out his neighbors who farmed.

Loren loved his family and treasured the time he was able to spend with them. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and watching them as they were growing up. Family activities were precious to Loren, and he liked to have his family gathered near at the holidays, especially at Christmas, when he would make Tom & Jerry’s eggnog.

Loren was a man who liked to be outdoors, experiencing nature first-hand. He took great pleasure in fishing, hunting and playing golf. Loren loved dogs and owned quite a few, many of which were black Labradors. He usually named his dogs Duke, except for one female that he called Duchess.

He also loved agriculture and was an avid gardener who put great effort into growing big tomatoes every year. He liked to preserve the bounty he brought forth in his garden, canning everything possible. His pickle relish, horseradish and potato bologna were exceptionally good and welcomed by his family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marnie of Storm Lake; sons: Steve and wife Roxanne Tjaden of Storm Lake, Dan and wife Julie Tjaden of Storm Lake, and Dave Tjaden of Fitzpatrick, AL; his daughter, Lori and husband Mark Lewis of Avoca; two grandchildren, Ben and Elizabeth Tjaden of Storm Lake; and step-grandchildren: Marc and Belinda Kock of Hoover, AL, Kelly and Billy Smith of Jeffersonville, IN, Kim and John Shunnarah of Louisville, KY, and Cory and Peggy Kock of Louisville, KY; and many extended family members and friends.

Preceding Loren in death were his parents; his infant son, Larry; and his daughter-in-law, Beverly Tjaden.

Lillian Whitmer

Lillian Whitmer, age 80, of Galva, Iowa died Thursday, April, 15, 2004 at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 19, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Galva. Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller between 2:00 and 6:00 pm on Sunday, April 18, 2004, where the family will be present from 4:00 to 6:00. Burial will be in Galva Township East Cemetery at Galva, under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller.

Lillian Haden was born on October 3, 1923 at Galva, Iowa to Albert and Freda (Hartman) Haden. She spent her childhood in her parents’ home in Galva, receiving her education from the Galva School, where she graduated from high school with the Class of 1941. Lillian was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Galva, where she was baptized and confirmed.

On July 26, 1942, Lillian was united in marriage with Howard “Pete” Whitmer. Their union was blessed with three children: Sandra, Connie and Judy.

Lillian was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother whose first priority was to make a warm and comfortable home for her family. She also worked outside her home as a cook at the Galva school building.

Lillian enjoyed sewing andembroidery and liked to cook for family and friends. A doting grandmother, Lillian treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and found great pleasure in spending time with them and attending their various activities. Lillian and Pete loved to watch their grandchildren’s sports events, never missing one.

Left to treasure her memory are her daughters: Sandra Schaefer of Schaller, Connie Nielson of Cherokee and Judy Whitmer of Galva; grandchildren: Dr. Jamie Whitmer of Galva, Shannan (Schaefer) Bragg and husband Mark of Des Moines, Reid Schaefer and wife Christine of Des Moines, Colby Nielsen of Cherokee, Carrie (Nielson) Cordova and husband Chris of Cherokee, and Cindy (Nielson) Weflen and husband Randy of Marcus; great-grandchildren: Kennedy and Carter Bragg, Breanna, Andrew and Bailey Cordova, and Nathan and Kimberly Weflen of Marcus; two sisters: Dorothy Whitmer of Galva and Leona McElroy of Ida Grove; and many other family members and friends.

Preceding Lillian in death were her parents; her husband, Howard “Pete”; and two sisters: LaVonne Haworth and Gerry Olson.

Virginia Nussle

Virginia Mae (Frolund) Nussle, 67, of Monroeville, PA passed away at Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville, on Wednesday August 25, 2004.

Funeral services were held at the Jobe Funeral Home in Monroeville on Saturday, August 28. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 4, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fratzke-Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, with Pastor Paul Johnston of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell officiating. Interment will follow at the Newell Cemetery.

Virginia was born July 28, 1937, the daughter of Ole and LaVon (Johnson) Frolund. She was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. She attended Newell public schools, graduating in 1956. She moved to Chicago in 1958 then on to Monroeville in 1963.

Virginia worked as a nursing assistant and companion to the elderly and disabled. She was a member of the Monroeville Senior Citizens and active at the Trafford Manor Senior Highrise. "Ginny" was an outgoing person who enjoyed friends and family.

Left to cherish her memory are: her son Kurt Nussle and wife Carol ofMonroeville, PA; daughter Karen Wigglesworth of Aliso Viejo, CA; grandchildren Grey and Cole Wigglesworth; mother LaVon Frolund of Newell, sister Janet Mahood and husband Gary of Ida Grove, IA; other relatives and friends as well as family in Denmark.

Virginia was preceeded in death by her father Ole Frolund.

Vira Reng

Vira Reng, age 81, of Alta, Iowa, died Sunday, November 28, 2004 at her home in rural Alta.

Funeral Services for will be Saturday, December 4, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Homes are in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, December 3, 2004 from 4-8:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m.

Vira Verle Holmes was born November 23, 1923 in rural Alta, Iowa to Harrison H. and Bessie Mae (Follett) Holmes. She was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church in Alta. She received her primary education in the Alta Schools, graduating from Alta High School. Vira went on to attend Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and then West Suburban Oak Park College in Chicago, Illinois.

On November 23, 1946, Vira was united in marriage to Dr. John Reng. Their marriage was blessed a son, David, and a daughter, Corrine. John and Vira lived in Colorado and Wyoming until 1979, when they returned to Iowa and the Alta area.

Vira was a homemaker who treasured her family. She liked to garden, was an avid collector and was very proud of her Century Farm.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, David and wife Jodi Reng of Washington; daughter Corrine and husband Steve Sheaffer of McFadden, Wyoming; five grandchildren: Dr. Cory Sue Reng, Ben Reng, Kim Gentle, Rebecca Grommon and Ramona Sheaffer; several great-grandchildren; and extended family and friends.

Vira was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and a sister, Vola.

Arlene W. Kies

Arlene W. Kies, age 85, of Newell, Iowa, died Saturday, November 5, 2005 at her home in Newell.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at 10:30 am at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell on Tuesday, November 8, 2005 from 2:00-8:00 pm, where the family will be present from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Arlene W. Lussman was born on July 23, 1920, at her farm home in rural Westside, Iowa to John and Augusta (Noelck) Lussman. She lived with her family in Crawford County and attended and graduated from Westside School.

Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa was the place of Arlene’s baptism, confirmation and marriage. She was baptized on August 22, 1920 and confirmed on March 25, 1934.

On April 30, 1942, Arlene was united in marriage to Harold Kies at Zion Lutheran Church, Arcadia, Iowa by Rev. Theo. A. Tews. To this union, eight children were born: Violet, Gladys, Francis, Harlan, Gilbert, Alan, Kenneth and Russell. She and Harold lived in the Wall Lake area and moved to Newell in March of 1952. She was a proud mother and homemaker.

Arlene was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. She was a member of Ladies Aid, served on the funeral committee and taught Sunday school.

Arlene was active in her community delivering Meals on Wheels and was a member of Hobby Club and Coon Homemakers. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, counted cross-stitching and taking bus tours. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Vi Thraen and husband Jack of Omaha, Nebraska, Gladys Mandernach and husband Gene of Lakeside, Francis Kies and wife Carolyn of Storm Lake, Harlan Kies and wife Sandy of Newell, Al Kies and wife Dana of Tacoma, Washington, Ken Kies and wife Carol of Newell and Russ Kies and wife Donna of Fonda; grandchildren: Ron Cagle, Renee Seger, Brenda McFadden, Doug Mandernach, Rick Mandernach, Angie Mandernach, Jeff Kies, Mike Kies, Christy Kies, Jamie Kies, Melissa Payne, Pam Manary, Brandon Kies, Travis Kies, Kevin Kies, Katie Kies, Tony Kies, Amanda Kies, Erin Kies, Susan Kies, Michaela Kies; great grandchildren: Mckenzie Cagle, Brett Seger, Hudson Seger, Jordan Mandernach, Jaycee Mandernach, Hunter Mandernach, Preston Mandernach, Rebecca Mandernach, Allison McFadden, Megan McFadden, Lauren McFadden, Samantha Kies, Colton Payne and Gracelyn Kies; sister Helen Grundmeier of Arcadia, Iowa; brother-in-law Raymond Kies and wife Maxine of Lake View, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold on December 26, 1972; son Gilbert; grandson, Michael Mandernach; granddaughters, Julie Mandernach and Brittney Seger; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Brian Gustafson

Brian Gustafson, age 61, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 20, 2005 in Mesa, Arizona.

A Memorial Prayer Service will be held Friday, August 12, 2005 at 7:30 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church will officiate. Graveside rites and inurnment will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2005 in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. that same night, Friday, August 12th at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

Brian was born August 12, 1943 to Floyd and Wanda (Cress) Gustafson in San Jose, California. After the family moved back to Iowa, Brian attended grade school in Sulphur Springs, Iowa and then graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1961. Brian received his undergraduate degree at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, his Masters in Education from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Administration and Curriculum from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Brian believed in education and the difference it could make in the life of every child. He was active and involved in state education associations, including the Iowa Educational Research and Evaluation Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Iowa Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, School Administrators of Iowa and National Association of Elementary School Principals. He worked in education and school administration until his retirement in 2001.

Brian enjoyed traveling, liked to fly and sail. He was a voracious reader. He took pleasure in cooking a meal for himself or to share with family and friends. Brian loved his dogs. He enjoyed the outdoors and camping. He was a light in the lives of those who knew and loved him and will be missed dearly.

Left to cherish his memory are his father, Floyd Gustafson of Storm Lake; brother Steve and wife Janelle of Storm Lake; sister Jan and husband Frank Klahs of Storm Lake; nieces, nephews and extended family, as well as a host of colleagues and friends.

Brian was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda Gustafson.

Charles L. Bannister

Charles L. Bannister, age 77, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on July 1, 2005 at his home in Storm Lake following a long-term illness.

Memorial Service will be Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at10: 30 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake with Pastor Jack Barber officiating. There will be a lunch and a time of fellowship following the service. Burial will be in the Lake View Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday with Military Honors by AMVETS Post #66 of Storm Lake. The Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Charles Lloyd Bannister was one of eight children of Lloyd and Blanche (Hersom) Bannister. He was born August 19, 1927 at home in Pocahontas, Iowa. His childhood days were spent in Mallard, Iowa where he attended a country school and later high school. He completed his freshman year in 1942, and was a farm hand working on a 320-acre farm for four years. His main jobs included raising farm crops, feeding and caring for livestock and farm repairs.

On August 6, 1946, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army. His place of entry was in Aaford Kearns, Utah as an Airplane Electrical Mechanic 658. He served with headquarter and base service Squadron 559th Air Service Group in Okinawa. He made first and second echelon repairs on electrical systems of B-29 and C-46 aircraft. Other duties included examining and making repairs of wiring auxiliary electric motors, ignition system and lighting units. In service, he was awarded a World War II Victory medal and Army of Occupation medal in Japan as a Corporal. He was honorably discharged on August 25, 1947 from Separation Stations, Camp Stoneman, California.

Charles then returned to farming which he did prior to enlistment. On October 26, 1952, Charles was baptized and married to Caroline Ann McCulla of Spirit Lake, Iowa at the United Methodist Church. In this union, seven children were born.

After farming several years, Charles finished his life of occupation of a truck driver and upon retirement, he went back to his first and long time love of gardening and raising chickens and rabbits. His hobbies included small engine repair, woodworking, fishing, reading mystery books, gardening, along with his generosity of giving away his home grown vegetables, and giving away home-made horseradish for a monetary donation to those who wished to pay him. He joined the AMVETS Post #66 in 1972 and remained an active member for many years.

Charles is survived by his wife of forty years and long time companion, Caroline Bannister of Storm Lake; two sons: Lloyd Bannister of Storm Lake and David Bannister and wife, Shanda of Storm Lake; four daughters: Charlene Ulrich and husband Jeffrey of Fonda, Teresa Handy and special friend Micheal Noe of Waterloo, Alice Lanthan of Storm Lake, and Melissa Bannister of Storm Lake; twelve grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters June Hampson and husband Ronald of Graettinger, Iowa and Iva Butner of Denison; one brother Dale Bannister of Denison; and many other relatives and friends.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Blanche Bannister; an infant daughter, Jane Ann Bannister; his sister Dorothy Erig; three brothers, Louis, Wayne and Larry Bannister; and son-in-law Artis (AJ) Lathan.

Charlie H. Behrens

Charlie H. Behrens, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

There will be no visitation prior to the memorial service, but after the services, family and friends are invited to gather together at the Lakeshore Café in Storm Lake to share memories and celebrate Mr. Behren’s life.

Charlie was born February 11, 1926 to Henry and Frieda (Hagman) Behrens at Storm Lake. He grew up in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1944.

On June 17, 1944, Charlie entered the United States Navy to support his country’s efforts during World War II. He saw action in Okinawa as a Seaman 1st Class with the Mobil Repair Unit. He was honorably discharged on June 11, 1946.

Charlie was a carpenter by trade, but also enjoyed using his carpentry skills for personal projects as well. He was a volunteer for the Buena Vista Historical Museum in Storm Lake. In his spare time, Charlie could often be found fishing.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Herbert and wife Helen Behrens of Wakefield, Rhode Island; four nieces, Deborah Behrens of Littleton, Colorado, Cynthia Sendelbach of Tiffin, Ohio, Paula Behrens of Conshohochen, Pennsylvania, and Barbara Behrens Kay of Brunswick Maine; four great nephews, one great niece and a host of friends.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Frieda Behrens.

Emmanuel Galindo, Jr.

Emmanuel Galindo, Jr., two-day-old son of Emmanuel and Yolanda Galindo of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home chapel in Storm Lake, with Father Eriberto DaCosta officiating. Burial is in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
