Mary Giese

Mary Ellen Giese, age 89, of Toulon, Illinois and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Toulon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services for Mrs. Giese were held on Monday, December 15, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation will be held at the funeral home for one hour prior to the beginning of the funeral service. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the local arrangements.

Mary was born May 15, 1919 in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of Robert Tibbs and Maude Bryan Maxey. She married Alvin Giese on June 6, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He died October 24, 2006, in Toulon.

Mary was a homemaker and taught piano lessons for a number of years. She served as church pianist, organist, and Sunday School teacher for many years. She and her husband ministered at the Storm Lake Church of Christ, of which she was a member from 1948 to 1981.

Surviving are two sons: Reverend Brian (Sylvia) Giese of Kewanee, Illinois and Gary Giese of Maryville, Tennessee; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Bryan Maxey of Defiance, Ohio; extended family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and three sisters.

May God bless the memory of Mary Ellen Giese.

Mathew Actouka Shed

Mathew Actouka Shed, infant son of Ryan Shed and Sabrina Actouka of Storm Lake, Iowa, died shortly after he was born on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services for Mathew will be held on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Reverend Jeremy Wind will celebrate the mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s church Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation for Mathew will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake from Thursday, November 27th at 4:00 p.m. to Friday, November 28th at 8:30 a.m.

Mathew is survived by his parents, Ryan and Sabrina; his maternal grandfather, Antonio Actouka of Micronesia; his maternal grandmother, Marietta Albert of Storm Lake; his paternal grandfather, Aklihno Konopehpa Shed of Sacremento, California; his sister, Sadishia Actouka of Storm Lake; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Consa Actouka, and his aunt, Tanya Shed.

Paul J. Cavanaugh

Paul J. Cavanaugh, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral mass was said at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Reverend Bruce Lawler celebrated the Mass for Christian Burial. Interment is in the church Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation was held from 3-8:00 pm, Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family was present. A Legion of Mary rosary was recited at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service was held at 7:00 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Paul James Cavanaugh was born on June 25, 1926 to Patrick and Margaret (McKenna) Cavanaugh in Alta, Iowa. He attended grade school and high school in Sulphur Springs, Iowa, graduating in 1943.

A life-long Catholic, Paul was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

On August 31, 1957, Paul was united in marriage to Jean Ellis at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake. This union was blessed with four children: Paula, Mary, Patty, and Mike. Paul and Jean raised their family and made their livelihood on the Cavanaugh family farm near Sulphur Springs, until moving to Storm Lake in 1990.

Paul loved sports, especially basketball and Notre Dame football. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, loved the farm, and their vacation trips to Okoboji. Paul will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years, Jean; his children: Paula Lindquist and her husband, Kenny of Albert City, Iowa; Mary Hendriks and her husband Vic of Jefferson, South Dakota; Patty Rohlk and her husband Ryan of West Okoboji, Iowa; Mike Cavanaugh and his wife Jeanie of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Tyler, Andrea, Nicole and Connor Lindquist, Evan Hendriks, Maggie and Olivia Rohlk, Amanda, Lindsey, Paige and Dylan Cavanaugh; sisters-in-law: Dorothe Cavanaugh of Newell, Iowa and Eloise Cavanaugh of Michigan City, Indiana; brother-in-law, Jack Ellis of Iowa City, Iowa.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: LaVerne, Cecil and Donald Cavanaugh; and a sister, Veronica Dell.

Robert W. Kinney

Robert W. Kinney, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

There will be no public services for Mr. Kinney. Acknowledgements can be mailed to: Mrs. Mona Kinney, Resident of B.V. Manor, P.O. Box 1266, Storm Lake, Iowa, 50588. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert was born on December 4, 1928 in rural Odebolt, Iowa.

Following his marriage to Patricia Jersey, the couple was blessed with four children: Eugene, Timothy, Jeffrey and Michael. On December 2, 1979, Robert was united in marriage to Mona McLauglin.

Over the years, Robert farmed in the Cleghorn area and later, painted houses, mowed lawns and did yard work for a living. He loved working outside and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Additionally, Robert enjoyed socializing with people and will be deeply missed. He will be remembered as a loving husband and a hard worker.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 29 years, Mona Kinney of Storm Lake; his children: Eugene Kinney of Meridan, Iowa; Timothy Kinney and his wife, Angie, of Meridan, Iowa; Jeffrey Kinney of Storm Lake; Michael Kinney and his wife, Sarah, of Spirit Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Levi Kinney and wife Rebecca, Gina Kinney, Zachary, Emma and Wyatt Kinney; one great-grandchild; and other extended family and friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Virdel F. Bringle

Virdel Flora Bringle, age 85, of Newell, Iowa died on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, at the First Congregational Church in Newell. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Stone Church, Illinois on Thursday, November 20. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be 5-8:00 p.m., Monday, November 17, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, with an Eastern Star service at 7:00 p.m.

Virdel Flora Bringle was born on September 1, 1923, in Plum Hill Township, Illinois, daughter of Oscar Hoelscher and Mary Brinkman Hoelscher.

The fifth child of nine siblings, Virdel and her family lived on various farms in Plum Hill, Okawville, and Irvington, Illinois. She was confirmed in the Christian faith on April 2, 1939. Her confirmation verse was John 15:5: “I am the vine. Ye are the branches. Ye who abide in me and I in him shall bear much fruit.” This verse was to remain a theme throughout Virdel’s Life.

When Virdel was eighteen, she and her siblings were featured on the front page of the St. Louis Globe Democrat holding a victory sign, with the caption, “a V-conscious Family.” It was unique because all nine children had names beginning with the letter V: Velma, Virgil, Virginia, Vernice, Virdel, Vernon, Vera, Verle, and Vilas.

As a young woman, Virdel worked at Emerson Electric, a war production plant in St. Louis, from 1943-1948. It was during this time that her older brother Virgil was killed in Belgium on March 18, 1945.

She married Roy F. Chesney on September 1, 1945, in Irvington, Illinois. To this union, four children were born: Nelson, Harriett, Gloria, and Frederic. Roy was called to the ministry in 1948, and together, he and Virdel served churches in Pershing, Missouri, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Glencoe, Minnesota, and Newell, Iowa. They moved to Newell in 1962, and Roy died in 1966.

Virdel began working at the Newell Providence School District in January 1970 as a school cook. After 26 1/2 years of service, Virdel retired in May 1996.

Virdel married George Bringle on August 23, 1974 at the First Congregational Church, Newell, Iowa. This added five more children to the family circle: Charles, Donald, Katherine, Martha, and Scott. They remained married until George died in August 1997. The two were very active in their churches and community. They enjoyed dancing, golfing, playing cards, and traveling. Virdel was a member of the Mrs. 500 Club and the Sunday Evening Bridge Club. She was also a 43-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. Virdel also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was active in the Women’s Fellowship of the First Congregational Church. In addition, she enjoyed baking and sewing.

Virdel was preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Mary Hoelscher, her first husband Roy Chesney, her second husband George Bringle, brother Virgil, sisters Velma Randoll and Virginia Randoll, brothers-in-law Joe Kudelka, Les Rallo, Clarence Randoll and Rudy Randoll. Survivors include her children, Nelson (Nancy) Chesney of Bettendorf, Iowa; Harriett Chesney (Stephen Kayes) of Mobile, Alabama; Gloria Chesney of Farmington, Minnesota; and Frederic (Irish) Chesney of Mansfield, Texas. Her step children include Chuck (Judy) Bringle of St. Augustine, Florida; Don (Kathy) Bringle of Waukee, Iowa; Kate Bringle (Maureen Murphy) of Arroyo Grande, California; Marti (Duane) Christensen of Missouri Valley, Iowa; and Scott (Rhonda) Bringle of Shakopee, Minnesota. She is also survived by sisters Vernice Kudelka of Florissant, Missouri and Vera Rallo of St. Louis, Missouri, and brothers Vernon (Darlene) Hoelscher of St. Louis, Missouri and Verle (Matilda) Hoelscher of Belleville, Illinois; and Vilas (Frieda) Hoelscher of Centralia, Illinois; sister-in-law Alice (Victor) Shubert of Coulterville, Illinois. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Vernon E. “Pete” Peters

Vernon E. “Pete” Peters, age 62, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, December 8, 2008 at his home.

Memorial services for Mr. Peters will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10 , 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present to greet friends.

Vernon Earl Peters was born September 1, 1946 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Essie and Susan (Harris) Peters. Pete, as he was known, spent his youth in the Newell, Iowa area, where he received his education and graduated from Newell High School in 1965.

In 1968, Pete was united in marriage to Jackie Austin in Sac City, Iowa. The couple was blessed with two daughters: Darcy and Angie. Later Shane Schlicht would join their family. Pete worked a number of years in maintenance and security until illness forced his retirement on October 29, 2007.

Pete loved being outdoors for any reason. He enjoyed gardening and caring for his lawn and yard. He and his family made many happy memories on their camping excursions, and friends were always welcome to join them. Pete was an avid fisherman. He recently has enjoyed the companionship of Izzie, a new puppy.

Pete’s greatest treasure in this life was his family, for whom he cared very deeply. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 40 years, Jackie Peters of Storm Lake; his daughter, Darcy (Corey) Reese of Estherville, Iowa; his daughter, Angie Dirks (special friend, Rod) of Storm Lake; son Shane Schlict (special friend, Wendy) of Sac City, Iowa; grandchildren: Kendra Kaylee Peters, Kaylysa Ladner, Kody Ladner, Cheryll Ann Kidd, Damien Fisher, Dallas Dirks, and Anthony Schlicht; brothers: Ross “Sonny” (Nancy) Peters of Moberly, Missouri and John Peters (special friend, Mary) of Fort Dodge, Iowa; brother-in-law Colin Austin of Arizona; sister-in-law Peggy Niles of Lake City, Iowa; niece Tracy Brown of Omaha, Nebraska; niece-in-law Shauna Chase of Des Moines, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Waiting for him to join them are those who preceded Pete in death: his parents, Essie and Sue Peters; his parents-in-law, Everett and Irene Austin; brother Kenny Peters; brother-in-law Larry Austin; sister-in-law ReNae Austin; cousin Larry Jo Peters; his paternal and maternal grandparents, as well as several aunts and uncles.

Willard L. Gerke

Willard L. Gerke, age 61, of Sioux City, Iowa, and formerly of Newell, Iowa, died on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at his home in Sioux City.

Services for Mr. Gerke will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 28, 2008 at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home, 1615 West Milwaukee in Storm Lake, Iowa. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery in Newell. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday for one hour prior to the start of services.

Willard Lee Gerke was born September 22, 1947 to Ewald and Alice Gerke. He was baptized October 3, 1947 at his home and confirmed March 26, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake, Iowa. He attended parochial school at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake through the eighth grade before graduating from Newell-Providence High School in 1965.

Following graduation, Willard worked at Nobles in Sac City, then went to work at the Hygrade packing house in Storm Lake. He joined the National Guard. In February of 1971, Willard was united in marriage to Nadene Kracht. To this union, two children were born: Randy and Robyn. Willard was very proud of his children and their accomplishments.

When the Hygrade plant in Storm Lake closed, Willard moved his family to Moville, Iowa and he was employed at John Morrell in Sioux City. He later moved to Sioux City, continuing to work at John Morrell.

Willard’s hobbies included watching NASCAR racing, competing in demolition derbies, and fishing. He was a great cook. Willard loved horses and enjoyed working with them.

Left to cherish Willard’s memory are his son, Randy Gerke and his daughter, Robyn Gerke, both of Chandler, Arizona; sisters: Maxine Lullman and Fern (Jim) Bjorklund, both of Storm Lake; brother Clifford (Norma) Gerke of Newell; nephews and nieces: Kevin (Brenda) Lullman of Storm Lake; Kent (Theresa) Lullman of Storm Lake; Cheryl (Dan) Kerkhoff of Manning, Iowa; Denny Gerke of Newell; Lisa (Jay) Newell of Littleton, Colorado; and Darrin (Karman) Bjorklund of Dodge, Nebraska; extended family and many friends.

Willard was preceded in death by his parents, Ewald and Alice Gerke, and one brother-in-law, Shorty Lullman.

Elinor L. Shaw

Elinor L. Shaw, age 91, of Storm Lake died Thursday, April 24, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be Saturday, April 26th at 11:00 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Wall Lake Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home on Friday after 3 p.m. where the family will be present from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.

Elinor Louise Jensen the seventh child of Oliver and Ethel (Russell) Jensen was born on a farm in Sac County, Iowa on December 23, 1911. When she was 2 months old, her father retired and the family moved to Lake View. After graduating from Lake View High School in 1929, Elinor attended Business School in Omaha.

On August 26, 1933 she was united in marriage to Edward W. Shaw of Wall Lake. The couple spent the first 5 years of their life together in Wall Lake where their son, Tom was born. In 1938 they moved to Storm Lake and with the exception of a few years during World War II have remained in Storm Lake.

Elinor was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, she participated in many church and community activities and she especially enjoyed working with children in Bible School each year. She was a 50-year member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and she was a charter member and third president of the Methodist Manor Guild and a member of the Cosmopolitan Club. Elinor enjoyed doing volunteer work with the Buena Vista Regional Medical Hospital Auxiliary for several years. Besides her special love of children, she liked reading, flower gardening, collecting flow blue dishes and playing bridge.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Ed, Storm Lake, a son Tom and his wife, Sharan, San Antonio, TX, two granddaughters; Stephanie Shaw, San Mateo, CA and Adrienne Shaw, Oakland, CA and numerous other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and four sisters.

Joan B. Vilas

Joan B. Vilas, age 76, of Storm Lake died Saturday, April 19, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 22nd at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Entombment will be in the Vilas Family Mausoleum at Storm Lake Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home on Monday after 2 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Joan Beth Mummert was born March 7, 1927 at home in Afton Township, Cherokee County, Iowa the daughter of Troy and Grace (Huff) Mummert. She began her education attending country school and graduated from Aurelia High School with the class of 1944.

She married Wilbert Dale Vilas on February 4, 1948 at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.

Joan was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, Lake Creek Country Club, she was active in the Buena Vista County Hospital Auxiliary, the Shrine Auxiliary and the Republican Party. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bridge and doing needlepoint. Joan and Willie wintered with friends in Florida for 28 years.

Survivors include her husband Wilbert, Storm Lake, two daughters; Nicki McKenna and her husband, Ed, Storm Lake, Mikki Belson, Holstein, a son, Douglas Vilas, Tampa, Florida, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, her brother, Billie Mummert, Cherokee and numerous other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Dale.
