Interment: 2:30 p.m., Friday October 15, 2004 at Hazelwood Cemetery, Grinnell, Iowa

Harriet Ethel Marguerite Case was born June 8, 1917, in Grinnell, Iowa. She was the fourth child of Harry Case and Ethel Bailey Case. Marguerite attended school in Grinnell, graduating from Grinnell High School in 1935. She attended Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls and took some classes at Drake University. She then taught school at Chester Country School and was known to carry her shotgun in the car and get her limit of pheasants on her way home. William (Bill) Martin moved to Grinnell and opened the OK Tire Shop on December 10, 1937. One day he asked someone who that pretty school teacher was. He learned her name was Marguerite (Case) Wise and that was the start of the love story and family of Bill and Marguerite. The couple was married in Kirksville, Missouri on May 29, 1948. Marguerite was a homemaker and devoted mother to Lee, Harriet, Maria, and Billie Marie. She was a dedicated member of the Church of Christ, and the children attended mid-week services in members’ home, practicing their reading skills by being asked to take their turn reading Bible passages. The family loved camping, fishing, all church activities and music. Bill and Marguerite delighted in hearing their children sing and play guitars. Bill’s family had all moved to Oregon and Idaho in 1936. Bill and Marguerite and the kids also made trips out west as often as they could. Traveling was enjoyed by all of the family and some other trips included visits to the World Fairs in Seattle, Washington and New York City, fishing trips to Leach Lake in Minnesota, camping trips in Yellowstone Park, the Black Hills, and Niagara Falls. In 1950, Bill and Marguerite moved to 1133 Prince Street and this is still the family home. Bill and Marguerite were always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it, especially through their tire shop and church. Their home was always buzzing with activity, but the family had dinner together whenever Bill got home from the tire store they owned for thirty-two years until 1970. Marguerite’s middle name was “go”….as in: Let’s go fishing. Let’s go camping. Let’s go out to see the Oregon family. Let’s go to church...followed closely by: Let’s go out to eat. Lying in the hospital in Des Moines with a broken leg, she asked, “Where are we going out to eat?” There was also: Let’s go to Tulip Time to watch the kids march in the band. Let’s go to see the newest grandbaby and years later… Let’s go see the grandkids’ sporting events. Let’s go watch great granddaughters Payton and Kaelin dance. Let’s go watch great grandson Bryce play soccer. Let’s go watch the fireworks. Bill and Marguerite celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1998. They had been married 55 years when Bill died on September 14, 2003. Being alone in her room at St. Francis Manor was so hard for Marguerite and she missed Bill so much. Maria and Ben, living in Grinnell, were always there whenever she needed them and enriched Marguerite’s life by making her such a large part their lives. Marguerite died Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. She was eighty-seven years of age and was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; her brother, Lyman Case; her sister, Idamarie Smith; and her great granddaughter, Evelyn DeKoning. Marguerite is survived by her children, Lee Martin and his wife Shirley of Kirksville, Missouri, Harriet Lincoln and her husband Don of Larkspur, Colorado, Marla Crawford and her husband Ben of Grinnell, Billie Marie Broich and her husband Stan of Des Moines, Iowa; her twelve grandchildren; her eighteen great grandchildren, with two more on the way; her sister Billie Walker, who resides at the Mayflower Home in Grinnell; and her niece, Camille Calhoun of West Des Moines, Iowa. Marguerite was truly a caring person, always energetic, and loved having family and friends over for dinner. She was an avid sports fan, especially devoted to the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Dallas Cowboys. We have all been blessed to have her as such an important and precious part of our lives.
