SIGOURNEY - Eugene Delp Mackey, age 79, of Sigourney, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Gene was born April 5, 1923 in Arenzville, Illinois, to Walter and Laura (Delp) Mackey and received his education in Arenzville schools. On September 27, 1941 he married Audrey Drake in St. Charles, Missouri. Gene served as a Seaman First Class in the United States Navy Armed Guard in the Philippine Liberation during World War II. In 1947 the couple moved to Nevada, Iowa, where Gene was employed by Williams Cylinder Head Company as a welder. In 1958 they moved to Colo, Iowa, where Gene opened his own welding shop. In 1994 the couple moved to their daughter’s farm in Sigourney because of health problems. Gene was a past Commander of the American Legion in Colo and enjoyed camping, working on automobiles, helping the youth, telling his stories to friends and family and life in general. Survivors include his wife: Audrey of Sigourney; one son: John (Jay) Mackey and wife Joanne of The Villages, Florida; one daughter: Kay Witte and husband David of Sigourney; two grandchildren: Chris Smart and husband Jeremy of Marion and Blaine Witte and wife Diane of Goodthunder, Minnesota; four great grandchildren: Kelsey Smart, Ethan Smart, Travis Witte and Amy Witte. He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers and 5 sisters. Funeral services are set for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Sigourney with Rev. Danny Lemons officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sigourney with military rites by the American Legion Post #19 and Lacey Kerr VFW Post #2308. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. Memorials may be directed to the Sigourney First Responders. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Keota - Joseph St. Clair Harding, Jr. was born October 22, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Joseph St. Clair and Anna Elizabeth Mellor Harding. He grew up in the Des Moines and Lineville areas, where he graduated from Lineville High School attended the South Dakota State College and Rutgers University and graduated from the Iowa State University receiving his B.S. in 1954. He served his country in WWII with the Army from 1944 to 1946. Joe was united in marriage to Helen Faye Holmes September 5, 1954 in Keota. In 1970 the couple made their home in Keota. He was a salesman for Continental Grain Co. for 22 years retiring in 1982, then he worked for the state of Iowa as the state’s sales manager for the Lottery, he retired from the state in 1992. Joe was a former member of the Presbyterian Church were he had served as an elder, Loins Club and the American Legion. He has also served on the board of directors for the Keota Senior Center and has been the co - chair for the citizens commitee for the school bond issue. Joe died Wednesday, March 26, 3003 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington after a sudden illness at the age of 76 years, 5 months and 4 days. He is survived by his wife Helen; two sons: Jerrold Harding and wife Judy of Fairfax Station, Virginia and Robert Harding and wife Sherly of Clayton, North Carolina and a daughter: Kathlene McKinney and husband Douglas of Newton, Iowa. Eight grandchildren: Julia, Jayde and Jasmyne Harding, Cody, Cory and Cari McKinney and Branden and Joseph Harding; his mother in law Glee Holmes of Keota. Three sisters: Theresa Horne of Galveston, Texas, Eva Mae Wilson of Seattle, Washington and Dorothy Haner of Lineville, Iowa; a brother Charles Harding of Georgia. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Richard and Burrell Harding and two sisters: Lelia Campbell and Fern Ames. Celebration of Life will be Saturday, March 29, 2003 at the United Church of Faith in Keota at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Burial will be in the Keota cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 8P.M. Friday, March 28, 2003 with the family present from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota.

Vertie Alice Marner was born October 3, 1908 near Parnell, Iowa the daughter of Eli and Elizabeth (Kinsinger) Marner. She attended Tucker rural school. She spent 4 years in La Junta, Colorado working in a Tuberculosis Sanitarium and then returned to Iowa living in the Parnell, Iowa City and Kalona communities. She worked in housekeeping at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for 33 years. She was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church and the WMSC. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Vertie died on Sunday, March 23, 2003 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a brief illness at the age of 94 years. Vertie is survived by a brother - Ora Marner and wife Eunice of Wellman; and 6 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother John; a sister Susan Roth and 3 nieces and nephews.

White, Fred

Parnell - Fred Clague White was born December 11, 1915 in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, the son of Charles and Eula Bush White. He graduated from Ft. Dodge High School in 1934. Fred was united in marriage to Alice Gates June 7, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa. He began farming in 1939 and in 1941 they moved to the Parnell area where he farmed until 1966. After he retired from farming Fred sold Moorman Feed until 1978. Fred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg serving as an Elder and Trustee. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Kiwanis, a 4 - H leader for Parnell Peppers for 7 years, on the Iowa County Extension Council and in 1969 was on the board of the Iowa County Soil & Water Conservation District for 25 years. Fred died Saturday, March 22, 2003 at the Colonial Manor in Amana after a brief illness at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 11 days. He is survived by his wife Alice of Amana; two sons: Clark White and wife Sherry of Homewood, Illinois and Lee White and wife Alice of Ankeny, Iowa; a daughter Barbara Gurnari and husband Charles of San Jose, California. Three grandchildren: Kristin Sosebee and husband Jason of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Angela White of Breckenridge, Colorado and Andrew White of Ankeny. A great granddaughter Sarah Sosebee. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Alice Althaus and Doris Knapp. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at 10:30 in the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. With Rev. James Stewart officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation will be Monday, March 24, 2003 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg from 4 to 7 P.M. with a Masonic Service at 6:30 P.M. Memorials are for the First Presbyterian Church.

Van Auken, Velma A.
August 11, 1913 - March 18, 2003
North English, IA
Velma Arloa Van Auken was born on August 11, 1913 on a farm near Millersburg, IA, the daughter of Leon D. and Hazel King Cover. She attended Millersburg grade school until the fifth grade when her family moved to North English where she attended and graduated from North English High School. Velma took Normal Training and taught school for several years at White Pigeon #6 and Grant country schools. On June 1, 1933 she was united in marriage to Theodore W. Van Auken at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They owned and operated the Shell Oil station which eventually became Uroil Company and also owned Van Motors Ford dealership in North English. She worked as 30 years as book keeper for Uroil Company which sold Texico products. Velma was a member of the North English Christian Church, a former member of the Federated Women's Club and was always interested in education. Velma died following a long illness on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at the English Valley Care Center in North English. She had been a resident there since March 1998. She is survived by two daughters: Janet Morrison and fiancee Lee Mast of Marengo; Linda Conner - Rathman and husband Dan of Excelsior, MN; 4 grandchildren: Debbi Johnson (Jim) of Sammamish, WA; Kathy Netser (Gary) of Conroy, IA; James V. Morrison (Carol) of Belle Plaine, IA; Lynn D. Morrison (Pam) of North English; 9 grandchildren: Christopher & Nicholas Johnson, David A. Robison, Amber & Ryann Netser, Tanner, Sabrina, Tucker & Paige Morrison; and 3 great great grandchildren: Katelyn & Ethan Robison and Dylan Netser. Also surviving are 2 sisters: Mildred Wade and Verla Gingerich both of Wellman; and a brother Kenneth Cover of West Des Moines, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Theodore in December 1979. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Pm Friday, March 21, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday, March 20th from 3 pm until 7 pm. Family graveside services will be held at a later date in the North English cemetery . A memorial fund has been established for the North English Community Center.

Services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday March 8, 2003 at the Uhlmann - Powell funeral Home in Williamsburg with Pastor Joe Hohenshell officiating. Burial is in the Oak Hill cemetery in Williamsburg. Survivors include her mother Sarah, two brothers: Kain and Caleb Dietze at home; Grandparents: Brian and Teresa Hagen of Watkins, Larry Dietze of Omaha, Nebraska and Joe and Candy Hohenshell of Millersburg; Great Grandparents: Bill and Sylvia Quick of Williamsburg, Jim and Jane Dietze of Williamsburg and Marvin and Bess Uitermarkt of Oskaloosa.

Kelley, Dorothy

SIGOURNEY - Dorothy Mae Kelley, age 80, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Washington County Hospital, Washington, following a brief illness. Dorothy was born September 29, 1922, in Delta, Iowa to Raymond and Nellie (Pearson) Leathers. She grew up in the Delta community and received her education at North Honey Grove Country School and the Delta High School. Dorothy married Robert Kelley. The couple lived in Keokuk County until the mid 1960's when they moved to Washington. Dorothy was a resident of the Washington Care Center for many years. She enjoyed fishing with her husband and doing needlework. Survivors include her son: James R. and wife Linda Greene of Washington; daughter: Reta Mondia of Fairfield; six grandchildren; several great grandchildren; brother: Gilbert and wife Jeanne Leathers of Ollie and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Robert. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Garrett cemetery in Delta with Rev. Richard Boyd officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2003 at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A general memorial fund has been established. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Klein, John E.
July 26, 1920 - March 03, 2003
Keota, Iowa
John Edward Klein was born July 26, 1920 in Keota, Iowa, the son of Frank and Edna (Stewart) Klein. He graduated from Keota High School in 1937. Throughout high school he delivered milk from his dairy farm before and after school. Following graduation he established a purebred Berkshire hog operation. In August, 1942, John stated “I have enlisted in the Marine Corps. I am forced to sell this great herd of Berkshires, which has taken me years to build.” WWII found Staff Sergeant John Klein in the Pacific Theater operating on the hydraulic systems of Corsair fighter planes. After his tour of duty, John sold rock phosphate in the Keota area. On November 28, 1948, he was united in marriage to Norma Lorene Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. John and Norma farmed while raising five children in the Keota community. After years in the turkey industry, John and his eldest son, John Merrill, partnered in a crop and pork operation north of Keota. Steve, Roger, Scott and Jarad also worked in the family operation. While his participation may have diminished upon his retirement in 1990, his interest was forever strong in the daily activities of the farm. John Edward Klein was a steward of the land. John held the Keota community in high regard, serving on boards and committees throughout his adult life. John served on the Keota school board, served as a director on the Keota Farmer’s Savings Bank Board, was an original director on the 76 Ltd. Board, was a founding director on the Maplewood Manor Board, was a member of the Keota Unlimited Corporation, a Mason, a member of the V.F.W., and a strong supporter of the Keota School Foundation. John spent many hours helping his church. He participated in the planning of the new church building and its upkeep, was very active and interested in mission projects, helped with the Church 40, and was a member of the Church Brotherhood. John passed away on March 3, 2003 at Maplewood Manor in Keota at the age of 82 years. Survivors include five children - Janie Westendorf and husband Roger of Keota; John Merrill Klein and wife Jeri of Keota; Mary Jo Larsen and husband Leonard of Ames; Lynn Klein of Keota; Steve Klein and wife Andi of Keota; ten grandchildren - Scott and wife Cherie, Lori, Kristin and Eric Westendorf; Jarad and Julianna Klein; Toby, Maggie and Emily Larsen and Turner Klein and one sister - Mary Isabelle Montgomery of Arnolds Park, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Norma in July of 1995. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at the church. Memorials may be directed to the United Church of Faith, Maplewood Manor Memorial Fund or Hospice of Washington County.

Maxey, John Burl

John Burl Maxey was born May 3, 1917 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of John and Alice Teeter Maxey. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Iowa City. John was united in marriage to Betty Jean Beer on February 10, 1945. He farmed south east of Williamsburg for over 50 years. In 1979, after retiring, they moved to Boulder City, Nevada where John died on Sunday, March 2, 2003 in the Boulder City Hospital, after a brief illness at the age of 85 years. John is survived by a son Philip Maxey and wife Deborah of Clarion, Iowa; three granddaughters: Jessica Maxey, Rebecca Maxey and Pamela Maxey and a great grandson Benjamin Philip John Maxey. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Jean in December 1997 and a son Robert. Graveside services and burial will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at St. Michael’s cemetery in Holbrook with Fr. David Hitch officiating.

Schimmelpfennig, Jeanne B.

SIGOURNEY - Jeanne B. Schimmelpfennig, age 72, of Indianapolis, Indiana, died Sunday, March 2, 2003 in Sarasota, Florida, following a brief hospitalization. Jeanne was born March 23, 1930, in Quincy, Massachusets, to John Francis and Blanche A. Wilson nee McCormick. She grew up in Quincy, where she attended Woodward School and received her Registered Nurse degree at Quincy City Hospital. Jeanne served as a Captain in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps in Weisbaden, Germany, where she met and married her husband. They have two grown children, David Everett and Nancy Jeanne and two one - year - old grandsons, Lars Eben and Everett Francis Schimmelpfennig. Her husband, Hal Everett, served 30 years with Eli Lilly and Company, during which time they, as a family, lived 16 years overseas. During this time Jeanne served as a volunteer to numerous health, environment, welfare, church and museum organizations and was elected president of the Martha Washington Society of South Africa. This volunteer work continued in Indianapolis after they returned to the United States. She will be sorely missed by many family and friends. Survivors include her husband: Hal Schimmelpfennig of Indianapolis, Indiana; one son: David Schimmelpfennig and wife Robin A. Davis of Washington, D.C.; one daughter: Nancy and husband Darren L. Kehrer of Indianapolis, Indiana and two grandsons: Lars and Everett Schimmelpfennig. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother: John F. Wilson, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. Kate Stangl officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2003 at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the new Sigourney Public Library fund or Sigourney Care Center.

WILLIAMSBURG - Robert “Bob” Deimerly, age 75, of Williamsburg, formerly of Keota, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness. Bob was born May 24, 1928, in Ft. Madison, Iowa to Peter and Agnes A.(Pauly) Deimerly. He attended school in West Chester and Keota. Bob lived in Keota most of his life and was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. In 1997 he moved to Hillside Estates in Williamsburg where he was closer to his family. Bob enjoyed fishing, visiting and spending time with family and friends, Survivors include his sister - in - law: Marjorie Deimerly of Marengo, Iowa; one niece: Carol and husband Michael Fetzer of Victor, Iowa; two nephews: Stephen and wife Margaret Deimerly of Marengo, Iowa and Douglas Deimerly of Brooklyn, Iowa; cousins: Ann Mackey and Eloise Richardson. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James Deimerly. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2003, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be at St. Elizabeth Catholic cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

KEOTA - Bernice Pauline Dill, age 94, of Washington, formerly of Keota, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at the McCreedy Home in Washington. Bernice was born November 4, 1908, in rural Keota, Iowa to Albert and Bertha (Blickensderfer) Dunbar and received her education in Keota schools. On January 6, 1926, she married Cloyce H. Dill in Washington, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in the Keota area and moved to Keota in 1969. Bernice was a member of the United Church of Faith in Keota, the Hopewell Club and pinochle club. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, camping, fishing, playing cards and attending family functions. Survivors include five children: Robert and wife Marilyn Dill of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Audrey Harvey of Washington, Iowa, Janice and husband Rollin Royce of Janesville, Wisconsin, Gary and wife Frieda Dill of Lockridge, Iowa, Cheryl Dill of Washington, Iowa; daughter - in - law: Rita Dill of Keota; 20 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; 26 great great grandchildren and three sisters: Evelyn McCallister of Washington, Mildred Hammen of Washington and Thelma Widdifield of Cathedral City, California. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Cloyce in 1973; two daughters: Debra Dill and Pauline Crull; son: Terry Dill; two sons - in - law: Charles Crull and Preston Harvey; one granddaughter; one great great grandson; four brothers: Cloyce, Dale, Boyd and Everett Dunbar, and three sisters: Cecil, Gladys and Verne. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003, at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Pastor Sallie Graves officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2003, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where the family will be present from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Cheryl Dill. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
