Irene F. Miller Shultz was born April 10, 1946 near Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Ira and Fanny (Yoder) Miller. She attended school in Kalona. She has lived in Michigan, Indiana, and Florida before returning to Kalona in 1997. She was a homemaker. Irene died on Sunday, May 18, 2003 at her home in Kalona following a long illness at the age of 57 years. Irene is survived by a son Mikel Bender of Tiffin; a daughter - in - law Rebecca Bender of Kalona; 3 grandchildren - Amber, Aaron, and Andrew Bender of Kalona; her mother - Fanny Miller of Los Angeles, California; 6 brothers and sisters - Jonas Miller and wife Lillian of Los Angeles, California; Chris Miller and wife Betty of Williamsburg, Kentucky; Oba Miller of Goshen, Indiana; Roman Miller and wife Linda of Guernsey; Chester Miller and wife Katie of Central City; Maryann Ferguson and husband Scott of Simi Valley, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.
A General Memorial fund has been established.

Margaret E. Harris, age 89, died Friday, May 16, 2003 following a brief illness at the Sigourney Care Center in Sigourney. Memorial Services will be held at 11:30 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Saturday, May 24, 2003. Rev. Danny Lemons will officiate. There will be no visitation. Her ashes will be buried in the South English cemetery . A memorial fund has been established in lieu of flowers for Hospice of Keokuk County and the North English Library. Margaret Elizabeth Harris was born on July 18, 1913 in Des Moines, IA, a daughter of Rev. Williams S. and Bertha Birch Handy. She moved with her parents and attended several schools in northwest Iowa, graduating from High School in Jolly, IA in 1931. Margaret graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA in 1937 with a Bachelor of School Music Degree. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Stanley Harris on June 4, 1941 in Boone, IA. Margaret taught in Webster, Jordan, Callender, Galva and in North English before retiring. She was a member of the Methodist Church most of her life. She loved to play the piano, knit, paint and solve crossword puzzles. Margaret died on Friday, May 16, 2003 following a brief illness at the Sigourney Care Center in Sigourney, IA. She lived 89 years, 9 months and 29 days. She is survived by two sons: Dr. Kenneth Harris and wife Barbara of South English, IA and John Harris and wife Mary Ellen of Carol Stream, IL; a half brother Carl Handy of Alexandria, VA; and 3 grandchildren: Ryan Harris, Kevin Harris & Elisa Harris. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband Stanley in June 1980 and a brother Richard Handy.

SIGOURNEY - Faun Leora Dumont, age 85, of Sigourney, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness. Faun was born February 18, 1918, in rural Sigourney, to Elmer T. and Mazie Leora (Ulin) Jacobs and received her education in Conner School and Sigourney High School. On November 25, 1937 she married Wilfred Dumont at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. Following marriage the couple lived and farmed in rural Sigourney. They moved into Sigourney in 1987. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, the Altar and Rosary Society and enjoyed crocheting, collectibles, birdwatching and her family. Survivors include two sons: Lyle and wife Helen of Sigourney and Thomas and wife Doris of Bennington, Nebraska; three grandsons: Jeff, Todd and Chad and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Wilfred in 1990 and one brother: Casper Jacobs. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2003, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where there will be a rosary wake service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Lester Joseph Miller was born June 30, 1919 near Wellman, Iowa the son of Menno and Barbara Swartzendruber Miller. He was baptized in his youth and has been a lifelong member of the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church where he was an active supporter of the church and the Mennonite Central Committee. On May 25, 1941 he was united in marriage to Katie Ann Kauffman at the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wellman. They lived in the Wellman community where he farmed and raised purebred Guernsey cattle. They retired to Kalona in 1983. They also lived in Wisconsin during CPS service for over 3 years. He was a very active volunteer at the Mennonite Historical Society of Iowa and was a historian and genealogist. Lester died of cancer on Saturday, May 10, 2003 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 83 years. Lester is survived by 3 sons - Duane Miller and wife Sharon of Burlington; Calvin Miller and wife Jean of Abingdon, Virginia; Kenneth Miller of Wellman; 4 daughters - Marietta Yoder of Kalona; Elvesta Hochstedler and husband Loren of Kalona; Rita Miller and husband Ellis of Apple Creek, Ohio; Ruth Beachy and husband Craig of Plain City, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and a brother Paul W. Miller of Wellman. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step - father Moses Beachy; his wife Katie Ann on May 2, 2003; a son - in - law Jim Yoder; a granddaughter - Patricia Miller; and 2 sisters - Ruth Miller and Lydia Miller.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be give to Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Mennonite Historical Society of Iowa,or the MCC Central State.

Luella James Hopp was born January 28, 1912 in Hilton Township, Iowa County, Iowa to Alfred James and Alice Jones James. She attended Pleasant Ridge Country School, Hilton Consolidated and later Williamsburg Public Schools where she received the PEO metal in 1925 for highest scholarship in 7th and 8th grades. She graduated in 1929 as Salutatorian of her class. After graduation she worked at Meredith Publishing in Des Moines, Iowa until she was old enough to teach. She later attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught school for five years. Luella married Elmer Hopp on February 24, 1934 in Cedar Rapids. They were married 61 years and 8 months before he passed away on October 23, 1995. She was an active member of the Congregational Church; she was a choir member and a member of a quartet that sang at many funerals. When her Congregational Church united with the Presbyterian Church in 1957 she became a member; sang in the choir, the first woman to serve as a trustee and also served as a deacon. She was a faithful member of the Women’s Organization as long as her health permitted. Luella had a deep religious faith and concern for people. She was a 60 - year member of the Harmony Club. She sang in the Iowa County Farm Bureau Chorus for many years. Luella and Elmer farmed for 40 years in the Williamsburg area. After retiring from the farm she was employed at Williamsburg Creamery and Amana Woolen Outlet on I - 80 and later she and her husband worked at Schanz Broom Shoppe in West Amana. She was preceded in death by her husband, a great grand daughter, Lindsay Heffelfinger, her parents Alice and Alfred James, two brothers: Floyd James and Orlen James and a sister Lovera Aulick. Luella is survived by a daughter Luanne Heffelfinger and husband Jerry of Mingo, Iowa; a son Donald James Hopp and wife Janet Carol of Republic, Missouri; four grandchildren: Jeri Ann Heffelfinger of Olin, Iowa; Jeff Heffelfinger and wife Lisa of Altoona, Iowa; Evie Hopp Clark and husband Brandon of Springfield, Missouri and Mandi Hopp Bears and husband Matthew of Springfield, Missouri; two great grandchildren, Jeremy and Hollie Heffelfinger of Altoona, Iowa and a sister Dorothy Schwiebert of Prairie Village Retirement Home in Prairie Village, Kansas.

KALONA - Katie Ann Miller was born January 20, 1921 in Arthur, Illinois the daughter of Henry J. and Mary Ann (Stutzman) Kauffman. She grew up in Illinois and Oklahoma and was baptized in her youth in Arthur, Illinois. On May 25, 1941 she was united in marriage to Lester Miller at the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wellman. They lived in the Wellman community until moving to Kalona in 1983. They also lived in Wisconsin during CPS service for a short time. Katie Ann was more than a homemaker, she was a vital part of the family farm operation. She was a member of the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church and she volunteered at the Crowded Closet and Pleasantview Home for 10 years. She loved to make quilts and enjoyed helping people. Katie Ann died on Friday, May 2, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa following a sudden illness at the age of 82 years. Katie Ann is survived by her husband Lester of Kalona; 3 sons - Duane Miller and wife Sharon of Burlington; Calvin Miller and wife Jean of Abingdon, Virginia; Kenneth Miller of Wellman; 4 daughters - Marietta Yoder of Kalona; Elvesta Hochstedler and husband Loren of Kalona; Rita Miller and husband Ellis of Apple Creek, Ohio; Ruth Beachy and husband Craig of Plain City, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 sisters - Martha Stutzman of Kalona; Clara Gingerich of Iowa City; and 2 brothers - Jacob Kauffman of Kalona and Harvey Kauffman of Middlebury, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son - in - law Jim Yoder; a granddaughter - Patricia Miller; 2 brothers - Levi Kauffman and Joe Kauffman; and a sister - Esther Borntrager. Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wellman with Pastor Elmer Miller officiating. Burial will be at Upper Deer Creek cemetery . Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2003, at the Yoder - Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, where the family will be present from 2:00 until 4:00 and 6:00 until 8:00. Visitation will continue from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Crowded Closet or Pleasantview Home.

She grew up in the North English community and graduated from English Valleys High School in 1967. Barbara was united in marriage to Douglas Cairns in Cedar Rapids, IA on February 22, 1969. They made their home in Cedar Rapids, Davenport, IA, Berkley, MI and in Saint Charles, MO. Barbara was a member of the Lutheran Church. Barbara died at her home in Saint Charles following a long illness on Thursday, May 1, 2003. She lived 54 years, 3 months and 28 days. She is survived by her husband Douglas of Saint Charles, MO; her father Harold Wade of North English, IA and a brother Randall Wade of Waterloo, IA. She was preceded in death by her mother. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 5, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service in North English. Pastor Corey Rajek officiated. Visitation was held from 1 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, May 4th at the funeral home. Burial was in the North English cemetery . A memorial fund has been established for the Lutheran World Relief Fund.

Williamsburg - Edith Irene Everett was born December 9, 1943 in Illinois, the daughter of Chester and Biana Wynona Roberson Morris. Her mother died at an early age, Edith was raised by her father Chester and step mother Alice Morris. She graduated from Sullivan High School in Sullivan, Missouri. She has lived in Sullivan, Missouri, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and the last three years in the Williamsburg area. Edith worked as a telephone operator for a number of years and was also a homemaker. Edith died Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City at the age of 59 years of cancer. She is survived by four daughters: Michelle Gebauer of Tucson, Az., Joyce Lumley of Independents, Iowa, Tanya Straw and husband John of Des Moines and Minde Albaugh and husband Jeff of Williamsburg. Her step mother Alice Morris of Sullivan, Missouri; Eight grandchildren: T. J., Joey, Cody, Shea, Amanda, Rian, Phill and Ryelee. A brother Jim Morris of Missouri and a step brother Kenny Morris of Missouri, and a number of step sisters and brothers. Edith was preceded in death by her mother, father and brother Raymond. Celebration of life service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Chaplin Mary Johnston will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time at the funeral home. A general memorial has been established.

Hazel Huber Wood was born June 24, 1907 in rural Keota, Iowa the daughter of Harry E. and Alma (Henderson) Huber. She attended rural Maple Grove School in Seventy - Six Township and graduated from Washington High School in 1927. On February 20, 1929 she was united in marriage to Melvin Lyle. He died on January 25, 1937. Hazel later married Clayton Wood on January 11, 1945 in Reno, Nevada. He preceded her in death on September 10, 1972. Hazel worked at Wellman Produce and then the VA Hospital for a number of years. She lived in Washington county area all her life except from 1930 - 1937 when she lived in Colorado. She was a resident of Parkview Manor in Wellman for the past 4 years and 4 months. She was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. Hazel died on Saturday June 28, 2003 following a long illness at the age of 96 years and 6 days. Hazel is survived by her daughter Darlene (Lyle) Miller and husband George of Wellman, 2 granddaughters - Barbara Kauffman and husband John of Wellman, Betty Stumpf and husband Randy of Joetown; 5 great grandchildren - Kim Stumpf, Tonia Johnston and husband Steve, Brandon Kauffman, Brent Kauffman, Angie Kauffman; and 3 great great grandchildren - Cailee, Ashlin and Dakotah Stumpf. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a brother David Huber; and 2 sisters Myrtle Redlinger and Loramae Finley.
A General Memorial fund has been established.

Robert Hugh Martin, age 73, died following a brief illness on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 1, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. His body was cremated. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:30 PM Thursday with a Christian Wake Service being held at 7 PM at Reynolds - Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney. A memorial fund has been established for St. Mary’s Church. Robert Hugh Martin was born on October 3, 1929 in What Cheer, IA, the son of Robert William and Viola Sieren Martin. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1949. Bob served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 until 1954. He worked for Gary Wareham Construction, the Iowa Department of Transportation, Culvert Builders and Kingsberry Homes. Bob also owned and operated Martins Standard Service and the Sportsman Lounge in Sigourney. Bob was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He coached little league, enjoyed hunting and bowling, and was a charter member of the Sigourney Kiwanis. Bob is survived by his sister Mary E. Dickinson of Sigourney with whom he had resided with for the past 13 years; 3 nieces, 1 nephew and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Keota - On Sunday, July 27, 2003 the Lord called home a beautiful angel. BONITA (BONNIE) KATHRYN GREINER, 54 of Keota, Iowa passed away at home while surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Bonnie was born on September 7, 1948 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Alva and Isabelle Hammes Baker. She graduated from Keota High School in 1966 and St. Joseph’s Nursing School in 1970. She was united in marriage to Marlin Greiner on August 22, 1970 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. They made their home in the Keota area, where they raised their family of nine children. Bonnie worked as a registered nurse for over 15 years at Maplewood Manor in Keota. She was dedicated to providing compassionate care and enjoyed showing her musical talents throughout her years of service. Bonnie’s favorite role was being a mother and wife. She loved her children and husband. Her compassion for life and people and devotion to her family are an inspiration to those she left behind. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Bonnie is survived by her husband Marlin; nine children: Annette Greiner of Iowa City, Christine Weber and husband Jim of Williamsburg, Mark Greiner and wife Sadie of Iowa City, Carrie Garman and husband Jeff of Keota, Jacque Eisenbarth and husband Terry of Richland, Heather Kingsbury and husband Matt of Wapello, Mattt Greiner of Keota, Gina Greiner of Iowa City and Derek Greiner of Keota; seven grandchildren: Alexis, Kaleb, Mikayla, Mackenzie, Kolby, Riley and Grant; her parents Alva and Isabelle Baker of Keota; a sister: Brenda Vittetoe and husband Robert of Washington; three brothers: Robert Baker and wife Marcia of Leeburg, Virginia, Richard Baker and wife Barbara and Thomas Baker and wife Donna all of Keota. She was preceded in death by a grandson Kolton Kingsbury. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 31, 2003 at the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Church. Where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 P.M. A general memorial has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service is in charge of the services.
