Bart L. Cary, age 43, of Bettendorf. died Thursday, November 25, 2004 at Genesis West, Davenport, after a courageous battle against cancer. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 29, 2004 at Homewood Evangelical Free Church, Moline. Visitation will be Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memorial cemetery in Rockford, IL. Memorials may be made to his family for a fund to be established in his name. Bart was born on February 6, 1961 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Dallas P. Cary and Sandra J. Jones Hanson. He attended Bettendorf High School where he was a wrestler. He had continued to be a Bulldog supporter and an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He married Katrina Bortz on July 28, 1984 in Rockton, IL. They had one son, Jacob. Bart’s work experience included various sales positions, sharping medical equipment, spin casting, pest control and most recently as an independent distributor for EcoQuest air purification and an associate with Amazingly Clean carpet cleaning. Bart attended Homewood Evangelical Free Church, Moline. He loved NASCAR, good stereos and music. He also enjoyed making knives.

Harry V. Swanson, age 89 of Milan died Friday, February 4, 2005 at St. Anthony’s Continuing Care Center, Rock Island. As per Harry’s wishes, his body will be cremated. Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. is assisting the family. Harry was born September 5, 1915 in Moline, the son of Axel and Eva Mary Johnson Swanson. He married Evelyn Walker in Indianapolis, IN. in 1937. She preceded him in death. Harry was employed at Farmall Works, East Moline for 38 years. Harry was a member of the National Guard, and also a member of Thor Lodge # 9 Independent Order of the Vikings. He was an avid fisherman and loved to do wood working and carpentry work.

John “Jack” Richard Witherspoon, Jr. age 76 of Geneseo, died Monday, January 24, 2005 at Parkview Terrace, East Moline. Funeral services will be 11:00a.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial is at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Jack was born August 22, 1928 in Moline, IL. the son of John R. and Irene Sarah Smith Witherspoon, Sr. He married Patricia Powell on December 3, 1979 in Rock Island. Jack retired from John Deere Administration on October 31, 1982 after 31 years of service. Jack was a veteran of the Air Force. He graduated from Augustana College. He enjoyed traveling and going to auctions, canal fishing and playing golf. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Rock Island. He was a very caring man.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at First Evangelical Free Church, Moline. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Burial is at Riverside cemetery, Moline. Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Free Church or the National Federation of the Blind. Ruth Anne was born on June 17, 1935 in Rockford, IL. the daughter of the Rev. A.A. and Rev. Amy Lee Henderlite Finders. She married Allen Schaefer on August 16, 1957 at the Ascension Chapel, Augustana College. Ruth Anne was a well known music educator and soloist. She attended First Evangelical Free Church. She was very involved with the National Federation of the Blind and the Quad City Breast Cancer and Lymphodema Support Group.

Mary Francis Thurmon, age 96, of Orion, died Sunday, January 23, 2005 at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Geneseo. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2005 at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. Orion with a visitation one hour prior to service time. Burial will be at Dayton Corner, Colona, IL. Memorials may be made to Orion Ambulance. Mary was born October 4, 1908 in Patomic, IL, the daughter of Fred and Sarah Jane Dunn Brinker. She married Gerald Thurmon on July 14, 1929at the Methodist Parsonage in Colona, IL. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1973. Mary did her nurses training in Sterling, IL and worked in the early 1950’s as a nurse at Oak Glen Home in Coal Valley. She was a member of First Christian Church, Moline.

She was preceded in death by daughter, Geraldine Marie Thurmon; three brothers and one sister.

Ruth Bendit, age 85, of Moline died Sunday January 23, 2005 at Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2005 at First United Presbyterian Church, Moline. Burial is at National cemetery, Rock Island. Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. Moline is assisting the family. Ruth was born November 12, 1919 in Hamilton, OH, the daughter of Harry F. and Marie Manegold Sponsel. She married Paul Bendit on September 26, 1954. Ruth graduated from the Cincinnati College of Commercial Art. She was a commercial artist in Dayton OH.where she did fashion drawings for newspaper ads. She also did fashion drawings for department stores in Dayton, OH., Tiffin, OH. and Yankton, SD. She was also a fine art painter. Ruth belonged to many art clubs, especially the Left Bank Art League that meets at the Butterworth Trust Carriage House. She enjoyed square and round dancing, and many other activities.

George Herman Dame, age 92, of East Moline, died Friday January 21, 2005 at Illinois Restorative Care Center, Silvis. Funeral services will be at 12:00 on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial is at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, IL. Memorials may be made to the John Lewis Coffee Shop, Davenport. George was born June 13, 1912 in Rumsey, KY, the son of Leslie and Julia Latrece Dame. He married Cuma Delphine Lindsey on July 7, 1934 in Calhoun, KY. George was employed as a welder at John Deere Harvestor – Plow Planter for 35 years, retiring on January 1, 1974. He loved fishing, boating, playing cards, gardening, but most of all spending time with his family and watching his great-grandchildren play in the yard. He will be greatly and desperately missed! We love you so Grandpa.

Memorials may be made to First Covenant Church or Christian Friendliness Association, Moline. Eugene was born December 24, 1924, Moline to John Einer and Elsie Swedberg Johnson. He married Jean E. Erickson on June 7, 1952 in Moline. He retired as crew leader after 37 years for the line department for Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Company retiring in 1986. Eugene was a WWII Army AirForce veteran serving as a firefighter. Eugene was a member of First Covenant Church, Moline where he was a former Trustee, Sunday school teacher, choir member and youth group leader. He was a member of American Legion Moline Post #246, Thor Lodge #9 Independent Order of Vikings and IBEW Local #109 Rock Island.

Haskins on Feb. 29, 1940 in Bethany, MO. He preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 1985. Anita was a current member of VFW Auxiliary, Moline. She was a former member of the Friends Circle, and the Moline Conservation Club. She enjoyed her dances and playing cards at the VFW.

Marian G. South, age 97, of Rock Island, formerly of Orion, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Friendship Manor, Rock Island. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at the Beulah Presbyterian Church, Orion. Her cremains will be buried in the Beulah cemetery . She will be remembered as a kind and generous member of the community. Memorials may be made to Beulah Presbyterian Church, Orion. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home. Ltd. Orion is assisting the family. Mrs. South was born on the family farm in Rural Township, Rock Island County, on July 24, 1907, the daughter of Perrin L. and Nellie Wilson Metzler. She attended Orion High School, Mac Murray College and Ilinois State University, Normal. Upon graduating, she taught Home Economics in Normal. On June 25, 1938 Marian married Howard McDowell of Normal. They later farmed the family farm in Rural Township. Howard proceeded Marian in death on May 28, 1962. In 1963 Marian married E. A. South of Orion. He died on January 23, 1977. Marian was a lifetime member of Beulah Presbyterian Church, where her Great Grandmother was a charter member. She was a member of Beulah Circle, TTS and Home Bureau.
