Maria Camilla Van Speybroeck
August 25, 1918 - October 13, 2009

Maria Camilla VanSpeybroeck, 91, of Rock Island, formerly of Moline and Milan, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 16 at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Visitation is from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial is at National cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the Milan No Kill Animal Shelter.
The former Maria Eechaute was born August 25, 1918 in Ghent, Belgium, the daughter of Oscar & Elvira VanParys Eechaute. She came to the U.S. in 1920. In 1938 she married Triphon Van Belle until his passing in 1971, and later married Joseph Van Speybroeck. She resided in Moline until 1982 when she moved to rural Milan.
Maria graduated from Sacred Heart grade school and was an honors graduate of Moline High School in 1936. In 1937, she graduated from McGown’s Beauty School and worked at McCahe’s Beauty Parlor. She also worked as a piano instructor at Eddie Simon Studio. Much later, in 1966, she enrolled at Blackhawk College where she was a Phi Theta Kappa honor society member and graduated with an Associates Degree in English and Psychology. Maria was a 1966 recipient of the Butterworth Memorial Scholarship which she then used to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree at Marycrest where she had been a member of Gamma Pi and Delta Sigma honor societies. Maria graduated cum laude in 1970. In 1973, she received her Masters degree from Northern Illinois University. Maria was a former member of the Moline Woman’s Club, the Willard School PTA where she chaired several committees, Chairman for Citywide PTA for 3 years and received one of the first lifetime PTA memberships. She also was part of the band called Van Belle Trio for many years.
She truly cared for her family, friends and neighbors. Maria was an avid reader, cared deeply for animals, loved music and dancing, traveled extensively and was very interested in politics.
Survivors include grandsons, Taggart Van Belle, Colona and Thaxton I (Diocelina) Van Belle, Banning, CA; and great grandchildren Zephia, Thaxton II and Thaddeus Van Belle. She was preceded in death by Triphon Van Belle, Joseph Speybroeck, and her sons Michael and Thomas Van Belle.

Phyllis G. Gibson
October 17, 1931 - December 22, 2008

Phyllis G. Gibson, age 77, of 599 Walnut Street, Knoxville, Illinois died on Monday, December 22, 2008 at 12:52 A.M. at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, Illinois. She was born on October 17, 1931 in Fordland, Missouri, the daughter of Roy and Edna Swearengin Clevenger. She married Arthur Gibson on March 26, 1950 at the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, Illinois. He preceded her in death on November 8, 2003.
Surviving are two daughters, Pamela Gibson of Sacramento, California and Debra Stenwall of Knoxville, Illinois; and two grandchildren, Allen Stenwall of Knoxville, Illinois and Cyndi Stenwall of Knoxville, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Olan, Odell, and Lawrence Clevenger.
She was reared and educated in East Galesburg, Illinois, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1949. She was a member of the Maxey Chapel United Methodist Church and the Maxey Chapel Woman's Society in rural Knoxville, Illinois. She was a member of the Tip Top Club and Bunco Club.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Monday, December 29, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. Sarah Wanck officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, December 28, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Burial in Knoxville cemetery in Knoxville, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Maxey Chapel United Methodist Church.

Pearl E. Groom
August 3, 1915 - December 17, 2008

PEARL E. GROOM, age 93, of 410 Pine Street, Varna, Illinois formerly of Maquon, Illinois died on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 9:00 A.M. at the OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. She was born on August 3, 1915 in Gilson, Illinois, the daughter of John L. and Pearl H. Logue Sprinkle. She married Robert C. Lindahl in 1933. She later married O. Lewis Groom in 1962. He preceded her in death on October 9, 1995.
Surviving are one daughter, Betty Mannon of Varna, Illinois; one son, Ronald C. Lindahl of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; two stepdaughters, Cheryl Whitman of Keenesburg, Colorado and Bonnie Johnson of Newark, Ohio; two stepsons, John Groom of Chetek, Wisconsin and Jerry Groom of Apple Valley, Colorado; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren and one sister, Florine (John) Logan of Battlement, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; four brothers; one sister; one stepson and one great granddaughter.
She was a homemaker. She was part owner of a fishing resort in Chetek, Wisconsin. She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Winter Haven, Florida.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 22, 2008 at 1:30 P.M. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois with visitation one hour before the services. Rev. Robert Herath officiating. Burial in Knoxville cemetery in Knoxville, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Bernice Barbara Flickinger
March 17, 1910 - December 16, 2008

BERNICE BARBARA FLICKINGER, age 98, of Oneida, Illinois died on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 12:05 P.M. at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois. She was born on March 17, 1910 in Geneseo, Illinois, the daughter of Emil and Dena Gerstner Munter. She married Merle L. Flickinger on January 1, 1930 in Geneseo, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 30, 1993.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia (William) Whitman of Oneida, Illinois; one son, Donald (Margaret) Flickinger of Galesburg, Illinois; four grandchildren, Karlynne (Stephen) Neagus of Aurora, Illinois, Larry (Connie) Whitman of Ocean View, Hawaii, Julie (John) Kelley of Kirkwood, Illinois and Debra (Stephen) Pfab of Iowa City, Iowa and one great grandchild, Tanner W. Whitman of Ocean View, Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters and one brother.
She was reared and educated in Geneseo, Illinois graduating from the Geneseo High School in 1928. She worked in a department store in Geneseo, Illinois before her marriage and at Mitchell's Dry Goods Store in Oneida, Illinois. She is a member of the United Church of Oneida-Presbyterian Chapel and its Women's Association. She was a former member of the World War II Mothers in Oneida, Illinois and was a former volunteer for the American Red Cross in Galesburg, Illinois during World War II.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 1:30 P.M. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Oneida, Illinois with visitation beginning at 11:30 A.M. Rev. Carolyn Weber officiating. Burial in Oneida cemetery in Oneida, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the United Church of Oneida or the Altona-Oneida-Wataga Ambulance Service.

Beverly J. Curry
January 15, 1928 - December 13, 2008

BEVERLY J. CURRY, age 80, of Victoria, Illinois died on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 1:15 P.M. at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois. She was born on January 15, 1928 in Victoria, Illinois, the daughter of Reed and Hazle Payne Gibbs. She married John W. Curry.
Surviving are one son, Robert (Elaine) Curry of Oneida, Illinois; one daughter, Beth (Dave) Rylander of Victoria, Illinois; five grandchildren, Rebecca Curry, Angela (Cesar) Jimenez, Marc Curry, Pauline Curry and Doug Rylander and three great grandchildren, Elena Jimenez, Emma Jimenez and Thalia Jimenez. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was raised and educated in Victoria, Illinois graduating from Victoria High School in 1946. She later graduated from the University of Illinois in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and a minor in Science. She was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phil Kappa Phi honor societies at the University of Illinois. She taught science at ROVA Junior High School. She taught Home Economics at Alwood Junior High and High Schools until her retirement. After her retirement she and her daughter owned and managed The Flower Bin in Bloomington, Illinois for eight years. She was a member of the Victoria United Methodist Church in Victoria, Illinois. She was active in 4-H during her early years and later was active in Home Extension, Country Couples and Farm Bureau. She traveled extensively abroad with the National Corn Growers. She played the piano for many church and school events. She was a volunteer teacher's aide at the Victoria Grade School tutoring in Math and Reading.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 22, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Faith Lutheran Church in Wataga, Illinois. Rev. Robert Franek officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 22, 2008 from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. at Faith Lutheran Church, Wataga, Illinois. Burial in Oneida cemetery in Oneida, Illinois. Russell Oris Westfall
October 8, 1926 - December 12, 2008

RUSSELL ORIS WESTFALL, age 82, of 131 S. Carr Street, Wataga, Illinois died on Friday, December 12, 2008 at 5:17 A.M. at the OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born on October 8, 1926 in rural Altona, Illinois, the son of Roy and Mildred Cochran Westfall. He married Mary F. Kunkle on June 21, 1952 in Galesburg, Illinois. She survives of Wataga, Illinois.
Also surviving are one son, Russell (Vicki Smith) Westfall Jr. of Galesburg, Illinois; one daughter, Marlene (Randy) Schoonover of Industry, Illinois; four grandchildren, Bob Bewley of Galesburg, Illinois, Jeri Lynn (Barry) Maulden of Knoxville, Illinois, Brandy Petersimes of Bellevue, Illinois and Jason Hoke of Industry, Illinois; and seven great grandchildren, Nicholas, Justice, Brianna, Kylie, Zach, Tanner and his little sweetheart, Hannah. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and his youngest son: Roger Lee Westfall.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1945. He served in the United States Army from March 3, 1945 to January 2, 1947 during World War II. He received the Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal-Japan and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon. He worked at The Register-Mail, Prairie Printing Company and a printing company in Davenport, Iowa. He retired in 1991. He was a member of the Wataga Congregational Church in Wataga, Illinois where he served as Deacon and a Board Member. He was a member of the former Masonic Lodge of Wataga, Illinois; Wataga Volunteer Fire Department; Wataga Senior Citizens; and the Wataga Village Board and served on the Zoning Committee. He was an avid bowler and served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Bowling Leagues.
Cremation Rites will be accorded.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday, December 15, 2008 at 6:00 P.M. at the Wataga Congregational Church in Wataga, Illinois. Rev. David Kramer officiating. There will be no visitation. Roberta F. Wood
August 19, 1935 - October 15, 2008
Roberta F. Wood, age 72, of 932 Leanne Drive, Knoxville, Illinois died at 8:53 A.M. on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. She was born on August 19, 1935 in Elmore, Illinois, the daughter of Walter A. and Wyona B. Lumberry Watkins. She married Elmer T. Wood on October 24, 1953 in Wyoming, Illinois. He survives of Knoxville, Illinois.
Also surviving are one son, Kendall A. Wood of Oak Run, Dahinda, Illinois; three grandchildren, Adam T. (Shanda K.) Wood of Knoxville, Illinois, Christopher L. Wood of Brimfield, Illinois and Wyatt D. Wood of Oak Run, Dahinda, Illinois; four great grandchildren, Joven Wood of Yates City, Illinois, Mya C. Wood of Yates City, Illinois, Evan T. Wood of Knoxville, Illinois and Kaylee F. Wood of Knoxville, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son: Kevin Wood.
She was raised and educated in Williamsfield, Illinois graduating from the Williamsfield High School. She was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Elmore United Methodist Church in Elmore, Illinois. She was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star of Illinois in Elmwood Chapter # 251 in June 1964. Through mergers of chapters from Elmwood to Farmington to Fairview, she was now a member of Fairview Chapter # 99, Order of the Eastern Star of Illinois. She has held most all the offices, first becoming Worthy Matron in Elmwood Chapter in 1973. She was also Worthy Matron in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989.

Beverly J. "Jean" Morrow, age 71, of 209 S. Broad Street, Knoxville, Illinois died at 3:25 A.M. on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. She was born on June 26, 1936 in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of William and Inez Gossett Potter. She married Errett Thomas. She later married Henry "Hank" Collins. She later married Leon Morrow.
Surviving are one daughter, Becky Dian Howell of Galesburg, Illinois; one son, Rick (Debbie) Thomas of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three sons-In-Law: Mickey Oeth, Sr of Eddyville, Kentucky, James Westfall of East Galesburg, Illinois and Bobby Howell of Galesburg, Illinois; special friend: Willis Olin of Galesburg, Illinois; four grandchildren, Mickey (Rebecca) Oeth, Jr. of Galesburg, Illinois, Nolan Westfall of East Galesburg, Illinois, Arricka Howell of Galesburg, Illinois and Amos Howell of Galesburg, Illinois; three great grandchildren, Tiara Kavanagh of Galesburg, Illinois, Kiara Oeth of Galesburg, Illinois and Hunter Oeth of Galesburg, Illinois; one sister, Mary Jo Teel of Pocahontas, Arkansas and one stepsister, Grace Stuart Jackson of Williamsfield, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather: Clifford Teel.
She was reared and educated in Knoxville, Illinois attending Knoxville High School. She received her GED in 1989 from Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois. She was a homemaker and worked at Maytag Corporation as an assembler for 32 years. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Galesburg, Illinois where she was very active and taught Bible School and Summer School and served on the Board. She volunteered at the Orpheum Theater in Galesburg, Illinois. She was a member of the Old Thresher's Association in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa where she owned and drove steam engine machines. She worked for Hannam's Auction Service in Galesburg, Illinois. She gave to all charities and volunteered at the Salvation Army. She was an adventurous traveler.
Private Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Galesburg, Illinois. Rev. Jean Hembrough officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2008 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Faith United Methodist Church in Galesburg, Illinois. Cremation Rites will be accorded with inurnment in Linwood cemetery in Galesburg, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the family. Eloise S. Armstrong

Eloise S. Armstrong, age 84, of 1145 Frank Street, Galesburg, Illinois formerly of 482 E. Dayton Street, Galesburg, Illinois died at 4:38 P.M. on Sunday, January 13, 2008 at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. She was born on December 13, 1923 in Bokoshe, Oklahoma, the daughter of George A. and Willa M. Rainwater Brake. She married Francis W. "Frank" Armstrong on September 1, 1944.
Surviving are two sons, Steven R. Armstrong of Galesburg, Illinois and Frank E. Armstrong of Massachusetts; one daughter, L. Elaine (Terry) McDowell of East Galesburg, Illinois; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother; two daughters and one son.
She was a homemaker and worked at the former Admiral Corporation for 9 years in the late 1960's and early 1970's. She worked and retired as a Technician IV from the Galesburg Research Hospital.
Cremation Rites will be accorded. Private Family Memorial Services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be held at Memorial Park cemetery in Galesburg, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Charity of the Donor's Choice.

October 20, 1916 - January 11, 2008

Helen Freda Van Dusen, age 91, of 1250 W Carl Sandburg Drive, Galesburg, Illinois formerly of Yates City, Illinois died at 1:45 A.M. on Friday, January 11, 2008 at the Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois. She was born on October 20, 1916 in Williamsfield, Illinois, the daughter of Patrick and Addie Waller Gallagher. She married Harley G. Cadwell on May 18, 1935 in Galesburg, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 3, 1970. She married Clinton Van Dusen on December 29, 1972 in Knoxville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1990.
Surviving are three daughters, Inez S. (Dale) Hedberg of Canton, Missouri, Irma Spilman of Galesburg, Illinois and Donna J. (Kent) Lockhart of Gulf Breeze, Florida; one son, Dean E. (Naomi) Cadwell of Houston, Texas; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Pam Cadwell of Quincy, Illinois and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; two sons: Waverly James Cadwell and Larry Glen Cadwell; one sister: Nellie Jones; and four brothers: Dana Gallagher, John Gallagher, Oral Gallagher and Kenna Gallagher.
She attended Elmwood Grade School and graduated from Elmwood High School. She was a homemaker and worked at the Knox Laundry in Galesburg, Illinois and later as a cook at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois. She moved to Quincy in 1998 and back to Galesburg in 2002. She was baptized in the Christian faith. She was a 74-year member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Burial in the Williamsfield cemetery in Williamsfield, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Senior Ministry at the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, Illinois.

Mary Susan Locke
November 19, 1921 - January 8, 2008

Mary Susan Locke, loving mother, grandma and great grandma entered into heaven at 9:20 AM on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 while at home surrounded by her loving family and devoted dog.
She was born on November 19, 1921 in Kewanee, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Febronia (Van Wynesberg) Slock. They preceded her in death while she was just a young girl. She was reared and educated in Kewanee.
She was united in marriage to Lawrence A. Locke on September 23, 1939 in Memphis, Missouri. He preceded her in death on September 13, 1985.
She leaves to mourn her departure a loving circle of family and friends, including three daughters, Jeannie (and John) Howard of Dahinda, Rita Hatch of Rio Hondo, Texas and Dixie Olsen of Waterbury, Nebraska; four sons, Clay (and Kimberly) Locke of Victoria, Steve (and Deanna) Locke of London Mills, John Locke of Ft. Myers, Florida and Martin Larry Locke of Canton City, Colorado; twin granddaughters that she raised as her own, Melissa (and Dan) Stevenson of Duquoin and Melinda Locke of Galesburg; one sister, Elaine Heath of Valley, Alabama; two brothers, Richard (and Marzetta) Slock of Manlus and Frank Slock of Rock Island; twenty additional grandchildren; forty-three great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; numerous friends and her devoted and loyal dog, Bo.
Mary and Lawrence farmed in the Cambridge area before moving to Knox County in 1967 where they continued to farm and raise their family. Mary was a devoted mother and farm wife. She worked at the Knox County Nursing Home for a number of years. She was known for baking the best cinnamon bread in the neighborhood and friends and family eagerly anticipated receiving their loaf each Christmas. Her grandchildren agree that she made the best pancakes and potato soup ever. Mary loved to spend time with her family especially during family wienie roasts. She collected roosters and anything Betty Boop.
She was dearly loved, not only by her family but by everyone who knew her. Her unselfish desire to help anyone in need, her cheerful disposition and shining courage are a living testimony of her character. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
There will be no visitation. A private family celebration of life has already taken place. Cremation Rites have been accorded by Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Prairieland Animal Welfare Center, operated by the Knox County Humane Society and will be greatly appreciated by Mary and her family.

William D. Unterkircher
December 15, 1954 - January 8, 2008

William D. "Bill" Unterkircher, age 53, of 121 W. Simmons Street, Galesburg, Illinois died on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 6:54 A.M. at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born on December 15, 1954 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of David D. and Beverly E. Dawson Unterkircher. He never married .
Surviving are two aunts, Helen Louise (Jim) Hutcheson of Gordon, Nebraska and Mary Dawson of Knoxville, Illinois; and caregiver: Richard Carlson of Galesburg, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was raised and educated in Knoxville, Illinois and graduated from the Knoxville High School in 1972. He was self-employed as a painter. He was a member of the Oaks Community Church, Oak Run, Dahinda, Illinois.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. Marty Briney officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 11, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois.
