Antone M. "Tony' Murphy

MARSHALL, Ill. - Antone M. "Tony" Murphy, 67, of Marshall died at 11:25 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, in Meadows Manor North Retirement & Convalescent Center in Terre Haute, Ind., following an extended illness. He was born Nov. 15, 1934, in Marshall to Joseph Murphy and Helen Jane Fox Murphy. Survivors include his wife, Shirley O'Rourke Murphy; two sons, Todd Murphy and Scott Murphy; one daughter, Deb Rheaume; one brother, Mike Murphy; two sisters, Beverly Washburn and Joyce Dillon; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. CST Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jeff Grant officiating. Burial is in St. Mary's cemetery, with graveside military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5975 and Clark County Post 90 American Legion. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 7 to 9:40 a.m. Tuesday in Pearce Funeral Home. A reception will be in St. Mary's Parish Center following the committal service.

Josephine Laski Batt

PALESTINE, Ill. - Josephine Laski Batt, 87, of Palestine, Ill., died at 3:10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Cotillion Ridge Nursing Center in Robinson. She was born June 14, 1915, in Chicago, Ill., to Stanley Kolman and Katherine Blapz Kolman. Her husband, Harold Lester Batt, died May 15, 1986. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Alice Laski, Robert and Faith Laski and Ronald and Sarah Laski; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ted Bloniaz; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Cremation is scheduled with a graveside service at the Robinson New cemetery at a later date. Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine assisted with arrangements.

Allan H. Hofmann

PARIS, Ill. - Allan H. Hofmann, 90, of Paris, Ill., died at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Lynncrest Manor in Paris. He was born April 21, 1912, in Palmyra to Fred Hofmann and Lillian Keehn Hofmann. His wife, Phyllis "Gennie" Davis Hofmann, died Sept. 25, 2002. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda Maxine and Connie Burgess and Anita Kay and Carl High; one brother, John Hofmann; one sister, Wanda Hofmann; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Stewart & Carroll Funeral Home in Paris. Burial is in Stafford-Crimmons cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Christina 'Sue' Perry

CASEY, Ill. - Christina "Sue" Perry, 53, of Alexander City, Ala., and formerly of Casey, Ill., died of cancer at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in a family member's home in Rose Hill, Ill. She was born Feb. 11, 1949, in Martinsville, Ill., to James Russell Cook and Wilma Nell Craig Cook. Survivors include her husband, Larry Perry; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry Vincent "Bub" and Tracy Perry; one daughter, Angela H. Cook; her father; two brothers, James Cook and Bill Cook; five sisters, Janice Hammer, Glenda Montgomery, Linda Deadmond, Judy Bolin and Lisa Miller; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville, with the Rev. Tom Mattson officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation is 9 a.m. to services Tuesday.

Sie J. Whipkey

ROBINSON, Ill. - Sie J. Whipkey, 85, of Robinson, Ill., died at 11:25 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Crawford Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit. He was born March 13, 1917, in Flat Rock, Ill., to Josiah Whipkey and Alphie Miller Whipkey. His wife, Margaret "Peg" Earleywine Whipkey, died Sept. 11, 1995. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Debra Whipkey and Stan and Ruth Whipkey; one daughter and son-in-law, Greta and Tim Rich; six grandchildren; one sister, Wanda Pepple; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson, with the Rev. Tom Akers officiating. Burial will follow in Robinson New cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.

William A. Ligget

MARSHALL, Ill. - William A. Ligget, 76, of Marshall, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2003 at his home. He was born Sept. 15, 1926 in Marshall to Mack Ligget and Suzanne Frey Ligget. He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Eaton, who died Feb. 23, 2003. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and David Littlejohn; three sons; David Keith Ligget and his wife Esther, Darrell Ligget and his wife Lisa, and Dale William Ligget and his wife Jayne. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pearce Funeral Home with the Rev. John Cutshall officiating. Burial will be in Marshall cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today and 7 a.m. until service.

Gary Wyeth Craig

CHARLESTON, ILL. - Gary Wyeth Craig, 55, of Charleston died Monday, April 14, 2003, in Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He was a maintenance supervisor for the Charleston public school system for 22 years. He was born Dec. 22, 1947, in Charleston to Oscar and Luanna Wyeth Craig. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Judy Hildebrand, whom he married on Feb. 8 1975, in Charleston; one son, David S. Craig and wife Heather; one daughter, Becky Winnett and husband Shane; two grandchildren, Koltin Winnett and Kendell Winnett; his mother; two brothers, David L. Craig and wife Rogene of Quincy; and Mike Craig and wife Carol of Hamden, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews including one great-niece, Makena Hanner of Lerna. He was preceded in death by his father and one grandchild. He was affectionately named by his wife and lovingly referred to by many as Craig. He regularly attended the Salisbury Church. He was a member of Charleston Ancient Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge 35, Ansar Shrine, Valley of Danville Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Charleston Lions Club and Charleston Gun Club. He was a graduate of Charleston High School. He worked 34 years in the Charleston public school system. He also worked part-time in maintenance at the Bent Tree Golf Course. He was a veteran of both the U. S. Army and Navy, he continued serving his country until his death with the 438th chemical company, Indiana Army National Guard in Terre Haute. He loved the out-of-doors, hunting, fishing and trap shooting, Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Charleston Community Church with the Rev. Scott Sims officiating. Interment with military rites conducted by the honor guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post 152 will be in Roselawn cemetery in Charleston. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Chapel. His family requests memorials in his honor be made to Crappaws Grandchildrens Educational Fund, checks may be made to Judy Craig as trustee. Gifts may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, Ill. 61920.

Marion J. Harper

CHRISMAN, Ill. - Marion J. Harper, 58, of Chrisman died at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind. He was a life long farmer. He was born Feb. 16, 1945, in Vermillion County, Ind., to Maurice Harper and Virginia Lohrmann. Survivors include his wife, Susan Farrington Harper; one daughter, Marla Sue Henson of Urbana; one son, Daniel Joe Harper of Chicago; one granddaughter, Amanda Henson of Urbana; one sister, Maurleen Wright of Marshall, Ind.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was in the Indiana National Guard from 1965 to 1971. He was a member of Sugar Grove Methodist Church, was a former trustee for Brouletts Creek Township and also drove the snow plow for it. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Frist Funeral Home in Clinton, Ind., with the Rev. Bill Duke officiating. Burial is in Helts Prairie cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Eugene Parr Johnson

CASEY, Ill. - Dr. Eugene Parr Johnson, 83, of Casey, died at 1:44 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind., following a very brief illness. He was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Casey to Dr. Lester Howard and Elnora Nancy Fouty Johnson. Dr. Johnson graduated from Casey High School in 1939, studied for a year on scholarship at Harvard University, attended Milliken University in Decatur, and University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, where he joined the Navy. In 1946, he graduated from medical school at Washington University in St. Louis. While at Washington University he met the love of his life while sharing a microscope. He married Dorothy Scott "Scottie" Dec. 26, 1945, in Clinton, Ky. He interned at Chicago Naval Hospital, and then served at Great Lakes Naval Station before being stationed at Palau, in the West Caroline Islands, in 1947. He and Scottie returned to Casey in 1949 where he joined his father, Dr. L. H. Johnson and brother, Dr. Howard G. Johnson in private practice. Dr. Eugene, as his friends and the community knew him, practiced medicine in his style as a country doctor, making house visits in a 30-mile radius before the Casey Medical Center was completed. Dr. Eugene continued in private practice until 1983, when he became a physician consultant to the Illinois Department of Public Aid. He served in that capacity until his retirement in January of 2003. Dr. Eugene was a past president of the Illinois State Medical Society, Clark County Medical Society, was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, served as Chairman of the Board, a director and vice-President of the lllinois Academy of Family Practice, and the Aesculapian Society, in any capacity needed. He served on legislative committees for the ISMS pertaining to malpractice insurance, right-to life issues, and quality of life issues. He was most proud of his role in the recognition of family practice as a medical specialty. He served his community of Casey as a multi-term member of the school board, Chamber of Commerce, and was a founding member of Casey Industries Inc. In addition, he formerly held memberships in the Elks, Rotary Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Among the many honors bestowed on Dr. Eugene was a Pan American Physicians award that reflected his dedicated efforts to better train doctors from Vietnam to care for their community in Chicago. He was especially proud of the honors that Casey bestowed on him, such as the "Drs. Johnsons, This is Your Life" night sponsored by the PTA, and the Casey High School Alumni Association's selection of him as "Outstanding Alumnus." He also cherished a special recognition from the Clark and Cumberland county boards. Dr. Eugene is survived by his wife, Scottie and his daughters, Priscilla Kay of New York City and Sara Jane of Bloomington, Ind. Also surviving is a niece, Barbara Epstein, nephews, Dr. James H. and Kent A. Johnson, great-nieces, Lorana and Mir Johnson; and a great-nephew, Joshua Bear. A memorial service is 4 p.m. Tuesday in Markwell Funeral Home. The family may be greeted, until 6:30 p.m., following the service. Memorials may be made to the Union Hospital Foundation; Casey First Christian Church; or, to the charity of donor's choice.

Ann Kannmacher Maxwell

MARTINSVILLE, Ill. - Ann Kannmacher Maxwell, 83, of Martinsville died Saturday, April 3, 2004, in Burnside Nursing Home in Marshall. She was a homemaker. She was born April 9, 1920, in Allright in Clark County, to John Ferry and Edna English Kannmacher. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Lester Maxwell, whom she married Nov. 16, 1940; one daughter, Linda Fahy of Martinsville; one sister, Evelyn Secrest of Casey; one grandson, Darrin Fahy of Chicago; two granddaughters, Jill Fahy-Himick and her husband Michael of Martinsville, and Sara Fahy and her fianc/ Keith Murphy of St. Charles; and one great-granddaughter, Kate Himick. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, John Fahy; three brothers, Carroll, James and Deon Kannmacher; and one sister, Virginia Kannmacher. She was a member of Island Grove Baptist Church. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Greenwell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jack Cunningham officiating. Burial is in Ridgelawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to Island Grove Baptist Church Youth Group. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

James Roy Samford

CHRISMAN, ILL. - James Roy Samford, 97, of Chrisman, Ill., went to be with the Lord at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2004. He had been in the Paris Healthcare Center. He was a retired farmer. He was born Jan. 25, 1907, in Fairfield to Charles E. Samford and Myrtle Simpson Samford. His wife, Irene Conner Samford, whom he married on Dec. 21, 1932, in Edgar preceded him in death on April 26, 1993. Survivors include one son, Dean and daughter-in-law Sharon Samford of Chrisman; one daughter, Carol and son-in-law Robert Craig, also of Chrisman; grandchildren Lisa Frailey, Shawna Heath, and Shelley Bishop, all of Chrisman, Stephanie Gage of Poland, Ohio, and Trent and Troy Keen of Chrisman; great-grandchildren Shannon and Travis Frailey, Claudia, Brendan and Matt Gage, Brett Bishop, Caroline Heath, Weston and Macey Keen, and Jacob Fitzgerald; two sisters, Bonnie Mathews and Wanda Crable, both of Paris. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He was a member of Kidley Community Church in Edgar, the Farm Bureau and served as a member of the Scotland School Board. Services are 11a.m. Monday in Sutton & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Waltz officiating. Visitation will be 1-5p.m. Sunday and Monday 9a.m. until Service time. Burial will be in Friends Chapel cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Kidley Community Church in care of the Sutton & Son Funeral Home.

Mary Elizabeth Miller Hawkins

PARIS, Ill. - Mary Elizabeth Miller Hawkins, 85, of Paris died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Methodist Hospital, in Indianapolis. She retired in the 1990s with more than 20 years of service with Hunter Insurance in Terre Haute, Ind., and had also been employed at Deem Lumber of Paris. She was born Oct. 1, 1918 in Edgar County to Johney L. Miller and Viola M. Barkley Miller. Her husband, Wilbur T. Hawkins, preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1964. She is survived by a brother, George E. Miller of Terre Haute. She also was preceded in death by a stepbrother and a stepson. She was a member of Nevins Christian Church and a member and past worthy matron of Paris Order of Eastern Star Chapter 7. Services are 10:30 a.m. today, in Sutton & Son Funeral Home in Paris, with the Rev. Kevin Levellie officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery near Kansas, Ill. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Nevins Christian Church, care of Sutton & Son Funeral Home.
