Garnett Smith

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill. — Garnett Smith, 87, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the United Methodist Village.

She was a nurse’s aide at the United Methodist Village, retiring in 1987.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Bobe of Lawrenceville; two sisters, Dorothy Alexander of Vincennes, Ind., and Marie Brooks of Costa Mesa, Calif.; a brother, Elsworth Ford of Venice, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Schmucker and Jeff Bobe.

Her husband, Paul A., died in 1997.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Emmons-Macy & Steffey Funeral Home, with burial in Lawrenceville City cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Township Library or the United Methodist Village.

Ovah Jones

BROUGHTON, Ill. — Ovah Jane Jones, 93, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi.

She had been a sales clerk.

She was a member of the Broughton Methodist Church, attended the Broughton Baptist Church and was a former member of Modern Woodmen Association.

Surviving are three daughters, Jane Wiwchar of Michigan, Betty Austin of Eldorado, and Phyllis Price of Harrisburg; 18 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, George Henry “Casey, ” died in 1960, an infant daughter, Veta Ruth Jones, and three sons, Benny, Bobby and Paul, also preceded her in death.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Gholson Funeral Home McLeansboro Chapel, with burial in Gholson cemetery in Broughton.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Walter Baldwin

CARMI, Ill. — Walter L. Baldwin, 95, of Elgin, father of Alice F. Mayberry of Carmi, died

Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.

He retired from the Milwaukee Railroad Line as an engineer.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elgin.

Also surviving are a daughter, Bonnie L. Texley of Necedah, Wis.; a brother, Rubin of Bonesteel, S.D.; three grandchildren, Debra Bauer, John Mayberry and David Texley; and four great-grandchildren.

His wife, Anastasia “Nettie” (Bartkowski), died in 1998 and a daughter, Beth Tarr, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in River Valley Memorial Gardens cemetery in West Dundee.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to service time at the O’Conner-Homeier Funeral Home in Elgin.

Bertha Washington

Bertha S. Washington, 77, of Evansville, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at her home of cancer.

She had worked at Welborn Baptist Hospital for 15 years and retired from the Stepping Stone.

She was a Lincoln High School graduate and and a member of the McFarland Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Paulina Bruin of Evansville; two sisters, Charlie Ann Church and Bertha Bowling, both of Oakland, Calif.; four grandchildren, Paul, Lisa and Darron Bruin and Kennette Skelton; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Paul, died in 1998.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mason Bros. Memorial Chapel, the Revs. W.R. Brown Sr. and Jr. officiating, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and a wake service from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Juanita Anderson

Juanita Anderson, 90, of Evansville, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

She retired from the Fendrich Cigar Co.

She was a member of Vann Avenue Baptist Church and former member of the Washington Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving is her husband of 55 years, Herman; two sisters, Rachael Malone of Henderson, Ky., and Thelma Hendrix of Hammond, Ind.; three brothers, Ernst L. Newman Jr. of St. Louis, Yost Newman of Beech Creek, Ky., and Robert Newman of Hammond; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Garry Lanham and Robert Reich officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vann Avenue Baptist Church building fund.

William Dorsett

William L. “Hobo” Dorsett, 69, of Mitchell, Ind., father of Danny and Billy Dorsett, both of Evansville, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center from cardiac arrest.

He retired from GM Powertrain.

He was a decorated Korean War Army veteran and member of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107. He was Protestant.

Also surviving are his wife, Elsie; two sons, Tony and Shane, both of Mitchell; nine stepchildren, including Rusty Harden of Cincinnati and Sandra Harden of Bloomington, Ind.; three sisters, Wilma Shearhart of Calimesa, Calif., Pauline Abrams of Bloomington and Patty Moffatt of Mitchell; a brother, Harry “Sonny” of Mitchell; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell, Ind., the Rev. Mark Bechtel officiating, with burial in Mitchell cemetery, with military rites.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Margie Artieri

Margie (Ashworth) Artieri, 76, of Newfane, N.Y., sister of Robert Owen Ashworth of Evansville, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at the Newfane Rehabilitation and Health Care Facility from congestive heart failure.

Also surviving are four daughters, Angela Blackley, Jacqueline Artieri and Josephine Porth, all of Lockport, N.Y., and Diana Edmister of Olcott, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Thomas, preceded her in death.

Arrangements were handled by Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home in Lockport, with burial in Cold Spring cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

William Pease

PRINCETON — William Leroy Pease, 61, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center of heart failure.

He had been a maintenance mechanic for National Can.

He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Surviving are his companion, Jeannette Gail White of Princeton; three stepdaughters, Nancy Kramer, Denise Wint and Jackie White; a sister, Mary Virginia McCarty of Las Vegas; two brothers, John Thomas of Evansville and Francis David of Fountain, Colo.; three stepgrandchildren, Jeannette and Matthew Wint and Gilbert Kramer; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel, the Rev. Bernie Etienne officiating, with burial in St. Ambrose Church cemetery in Henshaw, Ky.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

James Garrett

OWENSVILLE — James T. Garrett, 75, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Owensville Convalescent Center.

He owned and operated Garrett’s 500 Service Station in Owensville.

He was a member of Maumee General Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Anna Lou (Kelley); and two sons, David Paul and Jeff, both of Owensville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holder Funeral Home, with burial in Maumee cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margaret Turner

OWENSVILLE — Margaret E. Turner, 69, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Gibson General Hospital from an apparent heart attack.

She attended Disciples of Christ Christian Church.

Surviving are her husband, Floyd E.; a daughter, Gwyneth Stine of Kent, Ohio; a son, Floyd III of Haubstadt; two sisters, Patricia Stapleton of Hemet, Calif., and Isabella Maas of Camarillo, Calif.; and two grandsons.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Disciples of Christ Christian Church, with burial in Owensville cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Holder Funeral Home and from noon to service time at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to WBGW, the Christian Radio Station.
