These are some obituaries that were posted on early pages of a funeral home in Franklin Park, Cook County, Illinois. For some reason, they did not put a death date in every record.

Vance C. HESTER
Vance Cranston Hester, 93, retired Superintendent of Public Schools, District 84, Franklin Park, Illinois, died December 3, 2002, of pulmonary and heart failure at Gottlieb Hospital, Melrose Park, Illinois.
He was born March 24, 1909, in Fort Payne, DeKalb County, Alabama, southeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee. At age 10 he moved with his parents, James D. and Nancy Elizabeth King Hester, from a farm to Wood River, Illinois. After attending local public schools, he graduated from Shurtliff College, East Alton, Illinois, in 1931 and later earned a Master's Degree from the University of Colorado. He began teaching in 1931 as a fifth and sixth grade teacher and junior high school coach in East Alton and became a first through sixth grade principal in 1937. In the same year he married Lella Apple. In 1939 Vance and Lella moved to Morris, Illinois, where he was a junior high school principal and elementary school assistant to the superintendent of schools.
He came to Franklin Park in 1941 to become principal and later superintendent of the Franklin Park grade school system, which grew from one to five schools by the time of his retirement in 1973. He continued to serve the community on the Franklin Park Planning Commission and was elected in 1996 to the board of the Leyden Township School Treasurer. He was also a long-time active member of both the Franklin Park Kiwanis Club, serving as President in 1947, and the First United Methodist Church of Franklin Park. He recently had been living in Palatine, Illinois.
Vance Hester is survived by his sons Donald (Ingrid) of Annandale, Virginia, Richard of Coeymans Hollow, New York, and John (Elaine) of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; his grandchildren Karen, Nicole, Cary, Erich, Jonathan, and Katie; and his great grand children Laura, Brian, Christopher, and Andrea. His wife Lella died in 1999.
A 3PM memorial service will be held January 31 at the First United Methodist Church of Franklin Park, 9857 Schiller Blvd., Franklin Park, IL 60131, to which memorials may be made. Caroles 'Carl' Schanstra
In Remembrance of Carl Schanstra, Sr.
Who was Carl Schanstra, Sr. any way? Was he an angel? Some might think so, since he was the only person who seemed to care when no one else did. He helped the sick and dying, he spread oil on the wounds of the hurting, and he gave money to those in need. A lot of money to a lot of needy folks. He gave a smile, or a joke, or a prayer of encouragement to many. Carl was always willing to pick up the check at breakfast, which tells you a lot about the heart of a man. In fact, all of his gifts told you he had a good heart in many ways, for 'where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.' So, was he an angel' Certainly not.
Well then, was he a devil or a demon? Did all those mean things he said to you, or the terrible things he did to you make him a demon? No. Some men seem to have a knack for sinning with gusto. They don't just trip, they fall and they fall hard. Then, they get back up and they fall again. They are crotchety, sinful and crass. They say and do things that hurt, and hurt deeply. Like a bear in a trap, they snap at those closest to them. They shouldn't be in the trap when they've been set free, but they keep stepping in it anyway. But, was Carl a demon? Certainly not.
So, who and what was Carl Schanstra, Sr.? Was he a father, or businessman, or husband, or churchgoer? Was he friendly, or kind, or mean, or impossible? The answers are yes, yes, and yes.
For you see, Carl, whether good or bad, was a man. Just a man. Nothing more. Just like the rest o us, he did things he wished he hadn't done. He sinned. We all do that. Did he repent? Did he truly repent? I don't know. I hope so. I think perhaps in his own way, he thought he did. But then, will any of us know truly how freely we've forgiven others and forgiven ourselves, until we stand in the presence of the One who forgives wholly, and who loves prodigally? And stand we will, before the One whose beauty and holiness will make us feel as Job did, like a worm and not a man.
Perhaps you cannot seem to forget the things Carl did to you, whether good or bad. Perhaps not, but God has already forgotten his bad and remembered only his good. If we wish to be more like our Heavenly Father, then that's how we should remember Carl, too. The blood of the cross is the salve that heals all wounds and it's the only thing worthy of praise.
No, Carl was not righteous, but who is? And remember, Jesus didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Repent yourself, before it's too late for you. Carl would want this for you. None of us are worthy to sit on Jesus' throne, or open the Scroll of Life, or enter heaven. We are all worms, but we are all loved by our Father and saved by His grace. He makes us beautiful, he gives us Life eternal.
So, how should we remember Carl Schanstra, Sr.? First, our focus should not be on him at all. The Bible says to 'fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.' With our eyes fixed on Jesus, we see the potential in every one, the potential to please God. We see the ways in which Carl pleased God. We see his sin, but we see Jesus taking away that sin and replacing it with purity. We see a man, yes, but we also see a loving Father making that man into his likeness in an instant. Carl has become like Jesus, for Carl has seen Jesus as He is, and now Carl sees life through Jesus' eyes.
What would Carl want us to learn from his life, now that he is with Jesus' He would tell us that sin has its consequences, but love covers a multitude of sins. He would say that 'he who has been forgiven much loves much, ' and Carl said this on earth many times. He would say not to worry about what others think, but do the right thing, even if it hurts.
He would say that people are the most important thing in life, not things, or businesses or money. But most of all, Carl would say, 'what does it profit if a man gain the whole world, and lose his soul?' And, 'what will you give in exchange for your soul?'
Forgive and forget the sin, but don't forget the man. 'For God demonstrated His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.' Treat Carl as God treated him. Love him and remember him and learn from him and forgive him. The One who heals all wounds and perfects all blemishes and forgives all sins asks this of you.
