Ellen L. Solomon

Ellen L. Solomon, age 50, of 726 Memorial Drive, Macomb, Illinois, passed away at 11:10 a.m. on Thursday, January 28, 1999 at her home in Macomb. She was born on July 31, 1948 in Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of Clarence and Mary Beard Bycroft. She married Dale Leon Solomon on June 19, 1996 in Roseville, Illinois.

She is survived by her husband Leon, one daughter Mrs. Jerry (Shelley) Raby of Macomb, two grandchildren Jestin Raby and Calliene Raby both of Macomb, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bycroft of Roseville; one brother Howard (Susan) Bycroft of Roseville; one sister Mrs. Tommy (Karen) Thompson of Bushnell, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

She lived in Roseville, Colchester, LaHarpe, and Morton for one year, Bushnell for two years, back to Roseville for two years, before moving to Macomb in 1988.

Ellen had worked as a nurse at McDonough District Hospital since 1983, she was a Certified Hospice Nurse and had worked for McDonough District Hospital Hospice Program and Home Health Care Program.

She was an active member of the Maple Avenue Christian Church in Macomb.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Maple Avenue Christian Church in Macomb with Rev. David Bycroft and Rev. Chris Williams officiating.

Burial was at the Oakwood cemetery in Macomb.

Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the McDonough District Hospital Hospice Program or the Maple Avenue Christian Church.

Durrill W. Foley

Durrill W. Foley, 65, Joliet, passed away, Saturday, January 23, 1999 at his home. Memorial services were held Thursday, January 28, at 7 p.m. at Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Rd., Joliet. Rev. Earl Thomas officiated and interment was in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery.

A son of Wendall and Ruth (Frye) Foley, he was born June 21, 1933 in Roseville. He married Mary Lou Kenan, June 1, 1952 in Monmouth, who survives.

Mr. Foley also leaves two sons, Steven and his wife Joyce of Naperville and L. Bradley Foley of Elmwood; three grandchildren; and two nephews.

His parents and one brother preceded him in death.

Mr. Foley was raised and educated in Monmouth graduating from Monmouth High School in 1950. He attended Monmouth College, where he was a member of the ATO Fraternity. He graduated from the Illinois State Police Academy with honors and served as a a state trooper in the Kankakee area.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and in 1961 entered the industrial paint business. At the time of his death, he was an employee of Specialty Coating, Inc., in Elk Grove Village.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Joliet Area Community Hospice or the Cancer Research Foundation.

Bernard G. Hart

Bernard G. Hart, age 62, Rock Island, passed away at 6:08 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 1999 in Trinity Medical Center West, Rock Island. He was born December 21, 1936, in Laura, the son of Wayne P. and Beulah M. Reimolds Hart. Surviving are his mother, Beulah Talbott, Monmouth; one sister, Janice Ryder, Maquon; three brothers, Kenneth Hart, Donald Hart and Merlyn Hart, all of Monmouth, and one half-brother, Michael Benson, Rock Island. He was preceded in death by his father and one sister. He was an Army veteran. He was a bookkeeper for the former Wilson Foods plant in Monmouth, and then worked as a hairdresser. He retired in 1996. Cremation was accorded. No service is being planned. Interment will be later in Warren County Memorial Park cemetery, Monmouth. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Clyde W. Skinner

Clyde W. Skinner, 68, Abingdon, passed away at 12:25 p.m. Thursday, January 21, 1999 in Oakwood Nursing Home, Kewanee. He was born August 1, 1930, Oneida, the son of Clyde W. and Pearl Stegall Skinner. He married Carol Cooley in Galesburg. Surviving are three sons, Kevin Skinner, Abingdon, and Bryan Skinner and Shawn Skinner, both of Galesburg; one brother, Maynard Skinner, East Moline; three sisters, Mildred West, Dahinda, Grace Brown, Galesburg and Dorothy DePrima, Chicago; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a custodian at Audi’s Restaurant. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in East Linwood cemetery. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy W. Stinemates

Dorothy W. Stinemates, 81, a resident of LaMoine Christian Nursing Home, Roseville, formerly of Kirkwood, passed away at 1:46 a.m. Tuesday, January 19, 1999, in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. She was born March 11, 1917, in the Reed community in Rozetta Township, Warren County. She was the daughter of Fred Hamil and Cora May Campbell Welch. She married Rolland E. Stinemates on December 16, 1936, near Monmouth; He passed away February 1, 1988. Surviving are one daughter, Bonnie Jean Flatt, Media; one son, Robert Clyde Stinemates, Monmouth; three sisters, Betty Maimone, Stratford, CT, Margaret Haar, Galesburg, formerly of Avon, and Marie Brokaw, Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a cousin, Pat Gustafson, Smithshire. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister. A licensed practical nurse, she worked at the former Monmouth Community Memorial Hospital for 11 years before retiring for health reasons. She was a member of Kirkwood United Methodist Church, and a member and past worthy matron of Mary Lincoln Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Roseville. She was a member of Mildred Warner Washington Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Kirkwood Community Club. She was a member of the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteered for the Kirkwood Heart Fund for many years. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday in Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, with the Rev. William Renner officiating. Burial was in Center Grove cemetery, Kirkwood. Memorials may be made to the Reed Cemetry Associaton and to Community Medical Center, Auxiliary, Monmouth.

Sara Breasaw

Sara E. Breasaw, age 93, of 1792 23rd Ave., Avon, formerly of Bushnell, died at 10:40 p.m. Friday, January 22, 1999, at Avon Nursing Home. Born June 17, 1905, in Roodhouse to Milton S. and Ollie R. Snow Lorton, she married Charles W. Breasaw on July 8, 1924, in Bushnell. He died December 26, 1982. One son, Charles, three brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Harry (Dorotha) Barnes of Avon; one brother, Kenneth Lorton of Bushnell; one sister, Lillie Ruark of Lewistown; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and two step great-great granddaughters. She was a former member of the Women’s Relief Corps. She attended Bushnell United Methodist Church Quilting Club. Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Bushnell cemetery with Rev. Norm Walagoria officiating. Martin-Hollis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to Avon Nursing Home activity department.

Gerald S. Henderson

Gerald S. Henderson, 84, Avon, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Monday, January 18, 1999. at Marigold Health Care Center in Galesburg. Born June 2, 1914, in Cuba to Ralph and Mable Orwig Henderson, he married Eleanor Shinn on September 7, 1940. She survives in Galesburg. Also surviving are one son, Larry of Alexis; four daughters, Linda Riley of Cuba, Donna Perryman of Elmwood, Jackie Cook of Avon, and Geraldine Abernathy of Prairie City; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. He was a truck driver for many years and owned and operated a corn shelling and trucking business. He also was a school bus driver for Avon School district. He was a member and former director of the Illinois Stock Horse Association and a member of the Galesburg Boots and Saddle Club. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 21, at the Prairie City cemetery in Prairie City with the Rev. Rick Kerr officiating. Corman Memorial Home in Avon was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Marigold Residents Fund.

James E. White Jr.

James E. White Jr., 31, of 625 S. Dudley, Apt. 5, passed away at 6:34. a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 1999, in Macomb. He was born Nov. 1, 1967, in Canton to James E. Sr. and Cheryl Kathleen Nidiffer White. Surviving are his parents of rural Ellisville; one son, Anthony, and one daughter, Lauren White, both of Pekin; one brother, Christopher of Santa Ana, CA.; one sister, Rebecca Sprecher of. Oswego; and his grandmother, Norma Kaner of Canton. He owned and operated the White-Light and Sound Music Show. He graduated from Spoon River Valley High School near London Mills. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home, Canton, with the Rev. Kevin VanTine officiatiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memory Gardens, Canton. Memorials may be made to a trust fund for his children in care of Mid-America National Bank.

Samuel R. Fox

Samuel R. Fox, age 63, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Knoxville, passed away at 11:01 am. Sunday, January 17, 1999 in Dignita Hospice Care Center, Tucson. He was born June 12, 1935, in Knoxville, the son of Charles and Helen T. Larson Fox. He married Sharon M. Farquer on August 4, 1956, in Dahinda. She died August 22, 1994. Surviving are one son, Stuart A. Fox, Tucson; two daughters, Sharlene L. Welch, Osco, and Sherrill Lynn Simpson, Tucson; three sisters, Nellie Daugherty and Helen Weidenhamer, both of Galesburg, and Dorothy Lockwood, Knoxville; five brothers, Harry Fox, Abingdon, Howard Fox, Ronald Fox and David Fox, all of Seattle, Washington, and Charles 'Bud' Fox, Iron River, Wisconsin; and seven grandchildren. He was reared in Knoxville, and was graduated from Knoxville High School. He was graduated from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, with a degree in education, and from Western Illinois University, Macomb, with a degree in administration. He taught at Lombard Junior High School, Galesburg. He was a Marine Corps Veteran. He was a member and elder of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints in Galesburg. A private pilot, he was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and was a former member of the National Stearman Fly-in board of directors. He was a member of local and state teachers’ associations. Funeral services were held Friday at 1:00 p.m. in Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, with Rev. Thomas Poplett officiating. Burial was in the Trenton cemetery near Dahinda. Memorials may be made to the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints, Galesburg.

Ruth E. Bird

Ruth E. Bird, 90, of Abingdon, Illinois, formerly of Alexis, Illinois, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 1999 at the Care Center of Abingdon. She was born September 16, 1908 in Mercer County, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur and Carrie Stephens Perrin. She married Clifford G. Bird in Morrison, Illinois on December 20, 1930. He passed away on March 27, 1972. Three brothers and one sister and her parents also preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Thomas (Irma) Bird of Alexis and Richard (Jenna) Bird of Abingdon; one sister, Mrs. Kermit (Gladys) Shangle of Louisville, Kentucky; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Alexis United Presbyterian Church and 50 year member of the Eastern Star in Alexis. She was reared and educated in Aledo, Illinois and graduated from Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois. Graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 26, 1999 in Alexis cemetery with Rev. Marti Jones of the Alexis United Presbyterian Church officiating. Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Alexis was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to the donors choice.

Stanley Lewis

Stanley R. Lewis, 79, of 550 East Carl Sandburg Drive, Galesburg, Illinois, passed away at 2:09 p.m. Friday, January 15, 1999, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

Born December 12, 1919, in Abingdon to Ralph and Ione Randall Lewis, he married Marian Foster on March 21, 1942, in Palmyra, Missouri. She died December 3, 1998.

His parents, one grandchild and one brother also preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Sid of Abingdon and John of Peoria; two brothers, William of Decatur and Robert of Winter Park, Florida; four grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He had lived in Abingdon most of his life and later moved to Galesburg in 1974. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1937. He was a wood pattern maker for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria. He later managed the Robinson Lumber Company in Abingdon. He last worked at Galesburg Glass for 25 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a World War II Army veteran with the rank of captain serving in Europe. He attended Officer Training School in Aberdeen, Maryland. He was a former member of Abingdon American Legion Post 381 and was a member of Galesburg American Legion Post 285 for a total of 52 years.

He was a member of First Congregational Church in Abingdon, where he served as church treasurer. He was a former member and past president of Abingdon Rotary Club.

Funeral service were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with Rev. Jon Prain officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon cemetery where military rites were conducted by Abingdon American Legion Post 381.

Memorials may be made to his church.

Eugene L. 'Gene' McCormick

Eugene L. 'Gene' McCormick, age 75, of 810 North Washington Street, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 1999 at the Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.

He was born November 27, 1923 in Buda, Illinois, the son of Charles and Zelda Howe McCormick. He married Darlene Brush on January 27, 1945 at Knoxville, Illinois. She survives.

Other survivors include one son Roger D. McCormick, Richmond, Virginia; two daughters, Starlett Beaudoin, Houston, Texas and Carol Walker, Abingdon; five brothers, John and Don of Maquon, Illinois; Charles of Viola, James of Galesburg and Dean of Aledo; two sisters, Blanche May Cotton and June Riley, both of Moline; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He grew up in the Maquon area and attended the Yates City schools. He farmed in Lewis County, Missouri and retired in 1983. He moved back to Galesburg area in 1988. He had been a patient at Heartland Health Care Center the past six years. He was a musician in several area bands.

He was also a member of the River Rats Baseball Team from Maquon in the 1950’s He was a past member of Lewis County Farm Bureau, Lewis County Home Extension Service and the National Farmers organization.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon, Illinois. Rev. Robert Snyder officiated. Burial was in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Heartland Health Care Center.
