Audrey L. Frye

Funeral services for Audrey L. Frye, 84, Newton, IA, were held Saturday, February 27, at 1 p.m. at Corman Memorial Home, Roseville. Rev. Dennis Vance, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Roseville, officiated and interment was in Roseville cemetery.

Mrs. Frye, formerly of Roseville, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 1999, at 3:15 p.m. in Skiff Medical Center, Newton, IA. Memorials may be made to the Roseville First Baptist Church.

A daughter of French C. and Pearl Davison Martin, she was born June 15, 1914, in Prairie City. She married Russell E. Frye on February 26, 1942 in Kahoka, Mo, who passed away, February 11, 1995.

Her parents, a brother and three sisters also preceded her in death.

She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Roger (Diana) Mecum of Grinnell, Ia; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Frye was a homemaker and attended the Baptist Church.

Vivian J. Allen

Mrs. Vivian J. Allen, age 72, of 1132 130th St. Berwick, formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 1999 at her home.

She was born June 8, 1926 in Schuyler County, Missouri, the daughter of Nova and Mary Atkinson Crabtree. She married Leo Allen in Galesburg, Illinois on January 7, 1947. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1982.

Survivors include one son, Mike Allen, Abingdon; one daughter, Julia Fields, Gilson, Illinois one brother, Colin Crabtree, New Virginia, Iowa; one sister, Lillian Joseph, Folsom, Louisiana and three grandchildren. Also surviving are special friends and caregivers who shared their home with her for the past four months, Rex, Rhonda, and Paeton Kilburn of Berwick.

She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

She was a school bus driver for the Abingdon School district for 22 1/2 years. She also farmed with her husband in the Abingdon area.

She attended the Prairieland Baptist Church in Galesburg, Illinois.

She was a former member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion post #381 in Abingdon.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with Rex Kilburn officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

S. Lorean Davis

Semintha 'Lorean' Davis, 92, Roseville, passed away at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 1999 in LaMoine Christian Nursing Home, Roseville.

She was born May 10, 1906, in Winslow, Arkansas, the daughter of John M. and Margaret E. Land.

She married John Lance Davis on August 20, 1927, in Winslow. He died in February 1977.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Babcock, Roseville and Ruby Glenn Kullman, Lake Havasu City, Arizona; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

She was reared and educated in the Winslow area. After her marriage, she moved to Oklahoma, and later to Colorado where she lived for 35 years before moving to Roseville 18 years ago.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Arkansas and the Mutual Benefit Club in Roseville.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Roseville cemetery, with Rev. James Oliver officiating.

Corman Funeral Home, Roseville, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Roseville Ambulance Service.

Ivan O. Shanks

Ivan O. Shanks, of 1008 East Broadway, Astoria, Illinois, passed away at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at the Astoria Healthcare Center.

He was born December 1906 in Brooklyn Township, Schuyler County, Illinois, the son of Joe and Rebecca Weaver Shanks.

He married Olive Mae Frazee on August 18, 1930 at Lewistown, Illinois. She preceded him in death on January 13, 1978.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and one great granddaughter.

Surviving are one son, Ernest Shanks of Astoria; five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

He lived in Brooklyn Township for many years, moving to Astoria in 1970. He was a farmer and a coal miner and also owned and operated a saw mill.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 19, 1999 at the Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, Illinois with Pastor Vernon Dean officiating. Burial was in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to Camp Emmanuel in Astoria or the Astoria Healthcare Center.

Robert L. Ray

Robert L. Ray, 80, of Avon died at 8:55 p.m. Monday, February 15, 1999, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He was born June 8, 1918, in Knoxville to Algie R. and Anna P. Keller Ray.

Surviving is one sister, Leona Reed of Avon.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

He retired from Admiral Manufacturing He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a member of Abingdon American Legion Post.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 18, at Knoxville cemetery in Knoxville, with the Rev. Jon Prain officiating. Corman Memorial Home in Avon was in charge of arrangements.

Stanley N. Chatterton

Stanley N. Chatterton, 84, Avon, passed away at 2:36 p.m. Sunday, February 21, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

Born September 28, 1914, in Ellisville, the son of Ray O. and Leta R. Norris Chatterton, he married Mary E. Morse, on February 3, 1936. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Thomas Chatterton, Avon; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Sheldon 'Bun' Chatterton of Fairview, Sidney Chatterton of Bushnell, and Stewart 'Sam' Chatterton of Ellisville; and one sister, Anna Mary Griffith of Canton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, John Ray Chatterton; and one sister Alice Buck Fayhee.

He lived and farmed all of his life in the Ellisville and Avon communities. He graduated from Ellisville Schools. He was a past member of the Avon Lions Club.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 1999, at the Avon Federated Church with the Rev. Jon Prain officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Corman Memorial Home. Burial will be in the Avon cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in his memory.

Richard Harshbarger

Richard 'Dick' Henry Harshbarger, age 81, of RR Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at his home.

He was born September 26, 1917 in Warren County, Illinois, the son of Richard Henry and Nellie Marie Meadows Harshbarger. He married Helen Chick on March 1, 1941 in Burlington, Iowa. She preceded him in death on November 28, 1982.

Survivors include one son Richard 'Rick' Henry Harshbarger Jr., of RR, Berwick, Illinois; two daughters, Mary Lois Payton, Gilson and Carol Jean Palmer, Abingdon, Illinois; one sister Frances Marie Davis, Galesburg, Illinois; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

He was born on the family farm and lived there his entire life where he farmed. He also worked at the Berwick Grain Company for 20 years retiring from there in 1979. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1935 and attended the University of Illinois. He was a member of the Warren County Farm Bureau.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m Saturday, February 20, 1999 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with Rev. Julian Cowell officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon cemetery.

Memorials may be made to OSF Hospice.

Arden D. 'Van' Hamilton

Arden D. 'Van' Hamilton, age 71, of 100 South Harshbarger Street, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 12:39 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 1999 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born August 21, 1927 in Cash, Arkansas, the son of Thomas Arden and Lona B. Daniels Hamilton. He married Minnie J. Miller on July 14, 1951 at Cash, Arkansas. She survives.

Other survivors include one sister, Grethel Burden, Palm Springs, California and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

He had lived in Abingdon since 1958 where he had formerly worked at the Abingdon Pottery, the Gamble Store and the former Grady’s Top Brass Restaurant. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 22, 1999 at the Abingdon cemetery with Reverend Ray Hutson officiating. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon, was in charge of the arrangements.

Burial was in Abingdon cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Nora E. Sleutz

Nora E. Sleutz, age 72, formerly of 612 East First Street, Galesburg, Illinois, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, 1999 in The Marigold Health Care Center, 275 East Carl Sandburg Drive.

She was born March 25, 1926, in Moline, the daughter of Ross L. and Nora L. Bowers Curtis.

She married Raymond Gillenwater in 1942. He preceded her in death. She married William Harry Sleutz in 1946. He passed away in 1959.

Surviving are one daughter, Sandra K. Kelso, Galesburg; three brothers, John Curtis and Ernie Curtis, both of Abingdon and Jimmy Curtis, East Galesburg; two sisters, Betty Strickland, Galesburg, and Geraldine DeJaynes, Abingdon; four grandchildren, three step grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one step great-grandchild.

She was a homemaker. She attended Jacksonville School for the Blind.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday in Abingdon cemetery.

Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home in Galesburg was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert W. White

Robert W. White, age 59, of Joy, Illinois, passed away at 2:43 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999 in Trinity West Medical Center, Rock Island. He was born July 20, 1939, in Trenton, Nebraska, the son of Earl and Minnia Marquette White. He married Patricia Powell on November 25, 1959, in Avon. Surviving are his wife; one son, Robert White, Aledo; one daughter, Kristin Tracy, Aledo; one brother, Wayne Woods, Bartley, Nebraska, and one grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant son. He was graduated from McCook High School, McCook, Nebraska. He lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, for eight years. He lived in Joy since 1969. He worked for Heinz USA, Muscatine, Iowa, for many years. A private graveside service will be held Thursday in Avon cemetery, with the Rev. Rachel Stookel officiating. No visitation is planned. Corman Memorial Home, Avon, is in charge or arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Mercer County Cancer Society.
