Arlan Kent Shorey, 63, of Lake Bluff died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 25, 2010, as a result of Glioblastoma (brain cancer). Arlan was born in Charles City, Iowa on April 19, 1947, the only child of the late Madelene and Lawrence Shorey. While attending the University of Iowa, he met the love of his life, Susan (Schreiber) Shorey and they married on August 2, 1969. Upon graduation, they moved to Chicago and Arlan worked in the insurance industry. Arlan obtained his M.B.A. from Loyola University in 1973. That same year the couple welcomed their daughter Veva, followed four years later by their son, Daniel. Arlan continued working in the commercial insurance business until his retirement in 2008. An avid gardener, Arlan spent his free time outside working on the numerous flower beds dotting the family property. After Susan's sudden death in April 2009, Arlan travelled extensively, living his life to the fullest. Arlan spent the summer of 2009 in Alaska with his son, Daniel, and daughter-in-law, Anna, gardening, fishing and hiking. Arlan travelled to England and Italy in autumn 2009 with friends. Never one to let life keep him down, in February 2010 Arlan went on an extended hiking trip in Hawaii, followed by a trip to California and Arizona with long time friends. Arlan is survived by his daughter Veva Shorey of Lake Bluff, IL and his son Daniel (Anna) Shorey of Anchorage, AK. preceded in death by his loving wife of thirty-nine years, Susan, and his grandsons Ryan and Dylan. The family thanks Arlan and Susan's many friends for their loving support these past twelve months. Private interment at Ascension Catholic cemetery in Libertyville, IL. Rebecca (Becky) Means Jones of Lake Forest, IL died peacefully on April 24, 2010 with her family by her side. Born September 1, 1922 in Fayette, Missouri, she was the loving daughter of Brigadier General Lewis M. and Evangeline Boggs Means. Raised in Fayette, she attended high school in Jefferson City, MO and briefly attended Central Methodist College and the University of Missouri before transferring to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California where she graduated in 1944. After graduation she lived in St. Louis MO where she met her future husband, Philip N. Jones MD, at the Veiled Prophet Ball. She adored her family including children Robert N. Jones, MD (Mica) of Midland MI, Rebecca Ann Jones and Margaret Jones Barnhart (Steven) of Lake Forest; grandchildren, David R. Jones (Amy), Juliana M. Stein (Peer), Philip C. Barnhart, Douglas M. Barnhart, and Lucy Katherine Barnhart; and welcomed with joy this past year her first great grandchild, Leo Walter Stein. She and her husband lived in Kenilworth for over 40 years before moving to Lake Forest Place in 1998. She will be remembered for her indomitable and enthusiastic spirit, her love of faith, family, friends, community, country, gardening and politics, and for her ever optimistic and joyful outlook on life. These traits were demonstrated in the many leadership roles she served over the years. She was a Kenilworth precinct captain for many years. She was active with Boy Scouts and served as President of the Kenilworth Girl Scouts. She was a devoted member of the Kenilworth Union Church, serving as chairman for the Rummage Sale, the Christmas Bazaar, and the Woman’s Guild, as well as teaching Sunday school. She was a member of the Kenilworth Garden Club, and in the summer of 1986 was Chairman for the Garden Club of America’s Show of Summer. She was a member of the Woman’s Board of Rush Medical Center from 1981 until her passing. She was also a member of PEO, The Fortnightly of Chicago, and The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. With her engaging spirit, she was an active participant in the life of the communities of both Kenilworth and Lake Forest. At age 80 she became a hard working commissioner on the Lake Forest Historic Preservation Commission, and during the last several years she served as a committed Republican precinct chairman in Shields Township. A Memorial Service will be held at the Kenilworth Union Church on Saturday, May 1 at 3:00 with a reception following. The family invites all who knew and loved Becky to come and join in the celebration of her life. Patricia Repp nee Taylor passed away on April 23, 2010 at Condell Hospice after a short illness. She was born in Milwaukee, WI, attended Mt. Mary College in Milwaukee then worked at the V.A. Hospital in North Chicago, IL as an occupational therapist until her retirement. She loved gardening, biking, walking and was an avid golfer. Along with her husband Frank she skied the challenging Alps in Austria, France and many ski resorts in Colorado. Each year they attended naval Air Force squadron reunions and enjoyed European cruises. She was a member of the Church of St. Mary, Lake Forest. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Repp (2007). Mrs. Repp is survived by sister-in-laws Margaret (Gilbert) Heaphy, Marie (Fred) Zalaznik and Roseann Jerdee, nieces, nephews and friends who thoroughly enjoyed her wonderful toffee during the holidays. Claire Marie Hoag, 84, Lake Forest, IL, formerly of Naples, FL, passed away on Friday April 16, 2010 at Balmoral Care Center of Lake Forest Place. She was born on January 3, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. She married Jack Hoag of Fox Lake and resided in the Chicago area before moving to Delavan, WI in 1972. She was a loving stay at home mom raising four children. She is survived by daughters April (David) Williams of Pine Island, FL, Annette (Mitchell) Becker of Lake Forest, IL as well as sons Jay (Michaela) Hoag of Atherton, CA and Jack (Linda) Hoag of Janesville, WI. She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Jack and her brother Donald Johnson. Joan C. Stevenson, 83, of lifelong resident of Lake Forest passed away in the comfort of her home on April 11, 2010 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born October 1, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Franklin G. and Helen H. Clement. She attended the Bell School until her graduation in 1940 as the best student in her class. She attended Brownmoor School in Santa Fe for 3 years and graduated from Dobbs Ferry, New York in 1944. From there she attended Bennett Jr. College in Millbrook, NY where she graduated in 1946. She married John A. Stevenson of Lake Forest in November of 1950. They honeymooned in Cuba and a few years later did a driving trip to Alaska before it was a state. At that time there were no rental cars in Alaska and it was their plan to deliver the first rental car to a major Alaskan city. After considerable planning they were given a rental car in Seattle to be delivered to Fairbanks 2, 000 miles north. On the then Alaskan highway, a gravel road constructed during WWII in 1943, they encountered all kinds of wild adventures. Joan was a dedicated volunteer from an early age starting with work at Chapin hall during the depression and through the 1960’s. She was a board member of the Lake Forest Hospital Woman’s Auxiliary from 1973-2006. She organized their annual benefit, served as a pink lady at the hospital and spent much time running the gift shop. Joan was also a member of the Junior Garden Club of Lake Forest for many years. Joan was an avid athlete with a love of all types of skiing. She spent the winter of 1950 in Aspen CO working for Aspen Ski Corporation as a slope packer while watching the 1950 FIS Alpine World championships. She also spent some time working at the famous Hotel Jerome in Aspen.Joan loved animals. She was never without a beloved companion. She especially loved turtles and had amassed a collection totaling 131 of them in all shapes and sizes. She also loved painting, sculpting and traveling. Her later years were spent traveling the globe often accompanied by her sister Nancy. She will be remembered for her generous heart and strength of character. Survivors include her sons John A. Stevenson, Jr. Edward c. Stevenson and daughter Helen Stevenson Tunney; 10 grandchildren, Lindsey Myrmo, Brooks c. Stevenson, Whitney H. Stevenson, Brendon C. Stevenson, Alexander C. Stevenson, Nathaniel C. Stevenson, Carly C. Stevenson, Jonathan H. Tunney, Jr., James S. Tunney and Christopher A. Tunney. A private interment was held at Rosehill cemetery on April 17, 2010 attended by her children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on May 22, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Mothers Trust Foundation at 400 E. Bertha Haug Dean, 101, formerly of Peoria, Illinois, died Thursday, April 1, 2010, at the Willows of Hawthorn Lakes in Vernon Hills, where she was a resident. Born February 7, 1909, in New York City to George and Bertha Kullen Haug, Bertha was the eldest of four children. As a teenager, she worked in her father’s store which sold leather goods and automobile accessories in Manhattan. After graduating from high school, Bertha attended Hunter College and later graduated from Packard Business School in New York City. From 1927 to 1933 Bertha worked in the Construction and Equipment Department of W. T. Grant Company in New York City. In 1933, Bertha moved to Chicago to accept a job with Montgomery Ward & Company. There she met and married Robert K. Dean, a medical student at Northwestern University Medical School. They were married on June 28, 1935, at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. In 1937, Bertha and Robert moved to Peoria, Illinois, where they put down roots in the community and reared three children. In 1956-57, they hosted the first high school foreign exchange student in Peoria sponsored by the American Field Service (AFS). In the 1960s, Bertha was Area Chairman for AFS. She also was a long time volunteer and member of the Service League of Methodist Medical Center and a charter member of the Peoria Medical Society Alliance. By 1987, Bertha became a 50-year member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria, where she and Robert formed many lifelong friendships. Surviving are three children: Robert H. Dean (Barbara) of Racine, Wisconsin, Dr. Frederick K. Dean (Ann) of Granger, Indiana, and Barbara D. Vallaly (the late Dustin) of Lake Forest, Illinois; two sisters: Mina H. Cory of New York and Dr. Elsie L. Haug of Chicago; eight grandchildren: William B. Dean (Kris) of Racine, Wisconsin, Charles H. Dean (Susan) of St. Petersburg, Florida, Andrew M. Dean (Jessy) of Evanston, Illinois; Frederick D. Dean (Kristen) of Wilmette, Illinois; Julie D. Parfrey (Richard) of Brookfield, Wisconsin; Emily I. Dean of Chicago; Michael D. Vallaly (Kristin) of Chicago, and Margaret A. Vallaly of San Francisco: twelve great-grandchildren, and ten nieces and nephews. Her beloved husband Robert predeceased her in 1991 after 56 years of marriage. Her younger brother Frederick J. Haug of New York also predeceased her. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, 700 East Westminster Road, Lake Forest, Illinois 60045.
