Decker, June S.
1923-2011

Former Wilmette resident June Stone Decker, age 87, died Sunday, March 27th in Salem, Oregon from causes related to age. During her last two weeks, June was surrounded by family, music, memories and the exceptional care of the Capitol Manor team. June was the first daughter of parents Irene May Leming Stone and Stanley Stuart Stone, born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 2, 1923. June married Howard C. Decker on October 24, 1942 and set up housekeeping in an apartment on Chicago's north side. Throughout her family's growing up years, June was actively involved in Girl Scouts, providing leadership both at the troop level, and at the council level, spearheading efforts to acquire, build and operate several major camp facilities in northern Illinois and Wisconsin. She also regularly volunteered with local schools, the Trinity United Methodist Church, and other community organizations in Wilmette. During those years, June's husband Howard C. Decker served as Village President of Wilmette. June's love of travel, camping and fishing led to many memorable family trips to northwestern Ontario. June was an expert fisherwoman, and enjoyed drifting for bass, walleye and muskie, always perched on the bow of the boat wearing a favorite hat. During the 1970s and early 1980s, June developed an active and successful career as real estate agent on Chicago's North Shore and was well respected as a talented Realtor who knew the communities and the real estate business, and who was particularly good at working with young families to meet their real estate needs. She retired from her real estate career in 1983. Howard retired from Northwestern University the same year. In their retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling the United States, visiting friends and family, pursuing genealogical research, and following the Oregon Trail. In 1984, they settled in Sequim on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. While in Sequim, June was actively involved in the Methodist Church, and was a regular volunteer at the local visitor center where she enjoyed helping tourists and others. In 1998, June and Howard moved to Canby, Oregon to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Howard died in February 1999. June is survived by daughter Bonnie Hull and her husband Roger of Salem, and their son Zachary Hull of Portland; son Howard S. Decker and his wife Amy Hecker of Rochester, NY; son Bruce Decker, his wife LeeAnn and their son Sam of Seattle; son Doug Decker of Portland, his wife Marie Mahon and their children Emma and Finley; sister Patricia Miller of Powers Lake, Wisconsin; and nephew Don Miller of Kenosha, Wisconsin. A memorial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 9th at Capitol Manor in Salem, 1955 Dallas Highway NW. The family has asked that any remembrances be made in memory of June to the Tillamook Forest Heritage Trust (45500 Wilson River Highway, Tillamook, OR 97141) in support of the Tillamook Forest Center, or to the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, (900 State Street, Salem OR 97301).
