HARRISBURG -- Ryan Matthew Brown, 15, died at 10:49 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, in Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, as a result of of injuries sustained in an automobile accident north of Harrisburg Monday morning. Funeral services will be at noon Friday in Malan Jr. High School Auditorium, with the Rev. Charles Curry officiating. Burial will be in Brushy Creek Cemetery

Martin L. Murphy
GEORGIA -- Martin L. Murphy, 73, Lake Hartwell, Ga., formerly of Sarasota, Fla., died Feb. 7, 2003. He was born Dec. 28, 1929, in Stonefort, to Dennis and Theressa (Garraghan) Murphy and settled in Sarasota in 1968, upon retiring from the Air Force. He worked for Siesta Key Utilities Authority, eventually becoming General Manager. In 1984, he retired to Arkansas and then Tennessee, returning to the farming life he had known as a boy and turning rocks, or young dirt, into arable soil. He attributed his successes in life to believing there aren't any ain'ts, cain'ts, won'ts, or don'ts --and darn few maybes. In 1996, he retired from farming and has since spent his time behind the wheel of an R. V., crisscrossing the United States and Canada, visiting family and old friends, and showing his wife the country he loved, while making many new friends. He is survived by his wife, Anna Elizabeth Betty; their children, Karen, of Philadelphia, Pa.; Donna Fernandez, of Sarasota; Sean, Mary, and Michael, also of Sarasota; Sue Maloy of Puyallup, Wash.; Peggy LaDue of Blanchard, Idaho; Larry Baker of Sullivan; Tom Baker of Havelock, N. C.; 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a brother, Nick Murphy, of Sunland, Calif.; and a sister, Beulah Jenkins, of Berryville, Ark. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth S. Britton; a daughter, Deborah; his parents; and his brothers, Leon, J. D., Don, and Gary. No local services were scheduled. Friends and family will gather at a later date for a life celebration. Alma VanCleve
CARBONDALE -- Alma (Adkins) Van Cleve was born on Nov. 6, 1905, in Elkville, the daughter of William and Eliza (Robinson) Adkins. She passed away on Feb. 22, 2003, at her daughter's home in Martinsville, N. J. Alma was raised in Elkville, moved to Carbondale, and was married in 1935, to James E. VanCleve. Alma was a self-employed housing coordinator for University students attending SIU Carbondale for over forty years. She was also an officer in the Carbondale PTA, active in 4-H and other community organizations. Alma was a member of First Baptist Church of Carbondale. Alma is survived by her daughters, Sula Krawczyk of Belleville and Marsha VanCleve Sosnowska of Martinsville, N. J.; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. VanCleve; son, Teddy J. VanCleve; granddaughter, Lynn Warrenfeltz; sisters, Orbie Graff, Elsie Burns, Lois Tucker, and Edna Hartsock; and brothers, Lewis Adkins, Scott Adkins, Ray Adkins, Roy Adkins, and Ben Adkins. There will be a memorial service for Alma at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003, in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park Chapel/Mortuary, 31 Memorial Drive (Old Route 13), Murphysboro.

DU QUOIN -- Rose Marie Crumbacher, 88, died at 11:45 a. m., Monday, March 3, 2003, in Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at funeral home. Hope K. Smith
DESOTO -- Hope K. Smith, 85, of Lawrenceville, formerly of DeSoto, entered life immortal at 2:17 p. m., Sunday, March 2, 2003. Hope was born Oct. 7, 1917, in Jackson County, the daughter of Walter and Ida (Williams) Taylor. She married Artie L. Smith on May 16, 1939, in Murphysboro. She is survived by her husband, Artie L. Smith of Lawrenceville; a son-in-law, Lowell Carmony of Lake Forest; two granddaughters and their spouses, Kathryn and Chris Finch of Libertyville and Anne and Tom Tropp of Deerfield; one brother, Cleo Taylor of Carterville; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. As a young woman she played the piano for some twenty-years at the DeSoto United Methodist Church. She became a member of the First United Methodist Church, Carbondale, on Feb. 14, 1971, where she enjoyed playing the piano for the Hospitality Sunday School Class. She was among the founding members of the Prime Time church ministry for seniors. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Patricia Carmony of Lake Forest; one grandson, John A. Carmony of Lake Forest; and a brother and sister, Theo Taylor and Evelyn Ebersohl, both of DeSoto. A celebration of life will occur at First United Methodist Church, Carbondale at 11 a. m., today with the Rev. John Annable officiating. Burial will be in DeSoto Cemetery, DeSoto. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 214 W. Main Street, Carbondale, IL 62901, and will be accepted by the funeral home.

MARION -- Edward R. Springs, 79, of Marion, died at 1 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, in V. A. Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Larry Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery
in Marion. Visitation was Tuesday at the funeral home. Edward was born on May 15, 1923, in Johnston City, the son of Harry and Mildred (Seyler) Springs. He married Dorothy Armstrong, and she preceded him in death in March of 1993. Edward was a retail clerk. He was a member of the Fellowship Masonic Lodge No. 89 of Marion and of Knights of Pythias of Marion. He served in the
Army during World War II. He is survived by three brothers and a sister-in-law, Paul Springs of Johnston City, David Springs of Granite City, and Wayne and Carol Springs of Edwardsville; a sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Mike Goodman of Overland Park, Kans.; and five nieces and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Bob and Dwight Springs.

Howard Eugene "Gene" Johnson
HERRIN -- Howard Eugene "Gene" Johnson, 74, formerly of Herrin, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2003, at his home in Santee, Calif. Gene was born Sept. 21, 1928, to Clara Castleman and William Jennings Bryan Johnson in Herrin. He graduated from Herrin High School and attended the Illinois Institute of Technology. He was a design engineer for the Cubic Corp. in California for 30 years. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U. S. Air Force. He married Marilynn Cook in 1970. She survives. Also surviving are four step-children, Robert "Dennis" Cook of Santee, Calif., William Cook of San Diego, Calif., Terry Cook of Garden Grove, Calif., and Debborah Watters of Boulevard, Calif.; nieces Linda Craig of Herrin and Laura DePew of Decatur; nephews John Miller of Herrin and William Lee Burgoon of Murphysboro; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Pauline Miller of Herrin and Geraldine Burgoon of rural Mulkeytown; and one nephew, Jack Wiggins of Centralia. Vera Louise Bazzetta
SALEM -- Vera Louise Bazzetta, 96, passes away at 10:15 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, at the White Oaks Boarding Home in Salem. She was born Jan. 22, 1907, in Herrin, to John Visconti and Gina (Zocchi) Visconti. She was married to Alexander Bazzetta in Herrin on Oct. 9, 1928. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She was one of the first graduating classes of Fontdonne College in St. Louis. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard D. and wife Joan Bazzetta of Salem; one daughter and son-in-law, Louise and husband Michael Groves of Boulder, Colo.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; on sister, Teresa and one grandson, Richard A. Bazzetta. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, with Father Kenneth J. Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Carlos Cemetery

MARION -- Ruth Nadine Wohlwend, 84, of Bloomington, formerly of Marion, died at 7:01 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the OSF St. Joseph's Medical Center in Bloomington. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with her nephew, the Rev. J. Alan Chamness, officiating. A commitment service will follow in the Goddard chapel at the Rose Hill Cemetery. Entombment will be in the Wohlwend family mausoleum. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A celebration of life memorial service will also be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2003, in the Social Center of the Westminster Village in Bloomington. Memorials may be made to the Westminster Village Foundation, 2025 East Lincoln, Bloomington, IL 61704; where she most recently resided, the Community Cancer Center, 407 East Vernon Avenue, Normal, IL 61761, or a charity of the donor's choice. She was born June 17, 1918, in Marion, the daughter of Clarence and Bertha (Clarida) Chamness. She married Lawrence J. "L. J. " Wohlwend on Sept. 2, 1939, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He preceded her in death. She spent most of her life in Marion, moving to Bloomington upon the death of her husband, to be closer to her family. She enjoyed an excellent quality of life while residing in Bloomington at the willows, maintaining independence in her own duplex on the property of the Westminster Village retirement community. Survivors include three sons, Ronald L. and wife Jackie of Morris; John J. and wife Jan of Bloomington; and Bruce and wife Michelle of Sugarland, Texas; one sister, Juanita and husband Andy Angell, of Rockford; one brother-in-law, Lester and wife Mildred Wohlwend, of Benton; five grandchildren, Laura Glenn, Mary Olson, David Wohlwend, Tyler Wohlwend, and Tess Wohlwend; three great-grandchildren, Riley, Taylor and Jack Glenn. Other survivors include 4 nephews and 2 nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John C. "J.C." Chamness and her sister, Maxine Carroll. She was most recently a member of Vale Baptist Church in Bloomington and was for most of her life an active member of the First Baptist Church in Marion. Nadine was a homemaker raising her three sons, while helping her husband, L. J. originate the Wohlwend Motor and Equipment Company, Westernaire Estates and Westernaire Plaza subdivisions, Wohlwend Farms and the Bank of Egypt, all in Marion. She supported her husband and their sons with their passion for outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and golfing. Nadine and L. J. also enjoyed spending many years together while at their winter home near Okeechobee, Fla. after his retirement. Nadine was a 50 year plus member of the Marion Woman's Club and the University of Illinois Home Extension, a past member of the Marion Clio Club; in 1964, she organized the Westernaire Estates Homemaker group and remained as a charter member until she moved to Bloomington. She was very active in Bible study at the Marion First Baptist Church and later at the Vale Baptist Church in Bloomington and enjoyed the meeting of the Bloomington-Normal Christian Women's Club. She was also a Bloomington-Normal guild member of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Bloomington-Normal Women's Club.

He was a sophomore at Benton high school, a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, and enjoyed playing soccer in the Franklin County Soccer Association League. Lela Marie Triplett
HERRIN -- Lela Marie Triplett, 82, of Herrin died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Northwest Regional Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. Lela was born on Jan. 24, 1921, in Carbondale to Henry & Bertha (McCloo- ney) Bain. She married Eugene Triplett on Jan. 21, 1937, in Marion. He survives of Herrin. Mrs. Triplett was a homemaker. During World War II, Lela worked as a machineoperator and then later at Olin-Matheson Corporation. She was a memberof Crossroads Tabernacle Church in Bush. Lela enjoyed fishing with her husband Gene at Lake Mathis and the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. She also enjoyed embroidery, quilting, collecting antique dolls, and going to yard sales and flea markets. She is survived by her husband, Gene Triplett of Herrin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Mike Ritacco of McHenry and Brenda and Richard Bradley of Sandia, Texas; son, Larry Triplett of Sandia, Texas; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Tena (Glasford) Fielding and George of Dayton, Texas, Linda (Glasford) Doud and Randy of Corpus Christi, Texas, Terry (Glasford) Shell and David of Elizabethton, Tenn., Tim Glasford and Tammy of Sandia, Texas, Richard Bradley, Jr., and Shanna of Sandia, Texas; Jennifer Scezlo of McHenry, Michael Ritacco of McHenry, Mark Ritacco of McHenry, Nicole Triplett of McHenry, Mark Triplett of McHenry; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
