Elizabeth Wright

JOHNSTON CITY -- Elizabeth Wright, 102, of Johnston City passed away at 7:20 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday Sept. 23, 2004, at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Shelly E. Forrest officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to VNA-TIP Hospice or to the First United Methodist Church in Johnston City, envelopes available at the funeral home. Elizabeth was born on Aug. 27, 1902, in Yorkshire, England, the daughter of John and Francis (Adcock) Hughes. She married Joseph Wright on March 18,1922, in Johnston City. He preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 1988. Elizabeth was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Johnston City and was a homemaker. She is survived by one daughter, Gladys Marinacci of Monongahela, Pa.; three grandchildren, Sherry Wright Falbo and husband Sal of Glen Ellyn, James Wright Marinacci and wife Terry of Monongahela, Pa., and Joseph Keith Marinacci and wife Nancey of St. Charles; eight great-grandchildren, Tony Provenzano, Maria Syracuse, Lisa Marinacci, Sarah Marinacci, Kimberly Marinacci, Lori Marinacci, Joseph Marinacci, and Nicole Marinacci; three great-great-grandchildren, Samantha Provenzano, Concetta Syracuse, and Sammy Syracuse; two sisters, Edith Elithrope of Johnston City, and Esther Kucera of St. Louis; several nieces and nephews; and a devoted caretaker for 16 years, Nickie Owens. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, John 'Jay' Wright; three sisters, Alice Swift, Clara Hughes Davis, Mary Tinmons; and two brothers, James 'Mickey' Hughes, and John 'Mucks' Hughes.

Floyd Cougill

METROPOLIS -- Floyd L. Cougill, 77, died at 3:32 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004. at Massac Memorial Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Curry officiating. Burial will follow in Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marguerite (Rocassi) Maxton

HURST -- Marguerite (Rocassi) Maxton, 86, died at noon Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at home, from complications of Parkinson's disease. Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, in Blairsville Cemetery. There was no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Hurst Ambulance Service or to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, P. O. Box 8111, 660 South Euclid Avenue, St. Louis, Mo. 63110. She was born Dec. 1, 1917, in Hurst, to Genoeffa (Spagnoli) and James Rocassi, and was baptized Nov. 30, 1930, at St. Aloysius Church in Royalton. Marguerite graduated from Hurst-Bush High School in 1935, and the St. Louis School of Nursing -- St. John's Hospital Unit on Aug. 13, 1938. She was a registered nurse at the Ordinance Plant in World War II, UMWA Miners Hospital in West Frankfort and Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was the recovery room nurse at Herrin Hospital from its inception in 1953 until her retirement on Nov. 18, 1982. She was married to William M. Maxton Jr. on Dec. 26, 1942, by William M. Maxton Sr. in Perryville, Mo. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1993. Survivors include daughters, granddaughter and sons-in-law, Mae L. and Norman Hanna of Hurst, Kara Hanna of Hilton Head Island, S. C., and Donna S. and Leroy Newton of Carterville; sisters and brother-in-law Eva Mae and Lee Townes of Cape Girardeau and Louise Dunlap of Du Quoin; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother; her father; her stepmother, Pauline Rocassi; her husband; and her sister, Mary Fegley. Marguerite's family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Pramote, whose compassionate concern and medical expertise allowed them to keep her with them many more years than anyone deemed possible, and to her devoted caregivers Vera, Patty and Evelyn.

Mary Kay Jones

RIDGWAY -- Mary Kay Jones, 68, died at 8:10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Vickery Funeral Chapel in Ridgway, with David T. Wood officiating. Burial will be in Crawford Campground Cemetery in Ridgway. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Preston Adams Carson

PINCKNEYVILLE -- Preston Adams Carson, 78, of Pinckneyville, formerly of Oakdale, died at 9:56 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in the Pinckneyville Hospital Skilled Care. Preston was born June 4, 1926, in Oakdale, a son to John Elwyn and Edna Joanna (Adams) Carson. He was united in marriage on May 27, 1949, to Martha Jane Harsh, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 1989. He then married Frances Torrens Kiehna on Aug. 1, 1990, and she survives. Preston attended the First United Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville and was an elder and Bible teacher at Oakdale Reformed Presbyterian Church in Oakdale; a long-time 4-H leader; a member of the Oakdale Grade School Board of Education and president of the board; one of the founders of and long-time board member and treasurer of Washington County Water Company; a member of the Tri-County Electric Cooperative Board of Directors, serving as an officer numerous times; a member of the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives board of directors; a member of the board of directors of Oakdale State Bank and long-time president of the board; winner of the Prairie Farmer 'Master Farmer' Award in 1988; a member of the Oakdale Ball Park Board; and a member of the Rural Youth as a teenager. Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phil and Joyce Carson and Neal and Carol Carson, all of Oakdale; one daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Roger Kellerman of Nashville; one stepdaughter, Sandy Kiehna; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Eileen Auld of Oakdale and Joann and Bill Richards ofNashville; seven grandchildren, Amy Hale, Christy Struckmeyer, Katie Carson, Samantha and husband Gary Tretter, David Carson, Jessica Carson, and Daniel Carson; and two great-grandchildren, Abbey and Allison Hale. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Oakdale, with the Rev. Phil Carson officiating. Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Penn.; the American Parkinson's Disease Association; or Pinckneyville Hospital Skilled Care.

Virginia Traylor

JONESBORO -- Virginia Traylor, 78, of Jonesboro, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at home. She was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Otwell, Ind., daughter of Auther and Marjorie (Demotte) Breidenbaugh. She married Randall Traylor, March 5, 1948, in Otwell. He preceded her in death Jan. 9, 1976. She worked at Florsheim Shoe Factory for more than 30 years. Survivors include four daughters, Betty Traylor of Herrin, Cheryl Traylor of Herrin, Sherry Traylor of Herrin, Rita Humphrey of Jonesboro; son, Ross Traylor of Jonesboro; grandson, Randy Humphrey of Anna; four great-grandchildren; six brothers, Horace, Ralph, Roger, Lowell, Jim, and Norman Dillon all of Indiana; sister, Vivian Reed of Indiana; and many cousins. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg, Ind., with visitation from 11 to 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Ivy Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to Ivy Cemetery Fund.

Barbara Burbes

SAUK VILLAGE -- Barbara A. (Domzalski) Burbes, 66, of Sauk Village, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004. She was the beloved wife of the late Everett 'Sonny' Burbes; the devoted mother of Rick Burbes and Sandy and husband Allan Sons; the loving sister of Rich Domzalski; and the dear half-sister of Christine Ochoa, Marty Ochoa and Elena Parrish. She was also very dear to her faithful companion, Bear, and her special friend, Russell Danbury. Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in the Smits Funeral Homes-Steger Memorial Chapel in Steger. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City. Visitation was from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at the funeral home.

Thomas Williams

GALATIA -- Thomas Williams, 79, died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia. Burial will be in Webber Campground Cemetery in Galatia. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Annalou Sowers

MARION -- Annalou Sowers, 79, of Marion, formerly of Harrisburg, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at the graveside in Sunset Lawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Hubert Bradley officiating. There will be no public visitation, those attending should go directly to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Addus Adult Day Care, 900 North Skyline Dr. Suite 301, Marion, IL 62959. Mrs. Sowers was a case worker for Illinois Department of Public Aid. She was a member of the Harrisburg First Baptist Church. She was a member of Rebekahs, Easter Star and Harrisburg Golden Circle. She was born Jan. 31, 1925, to Otis and Anna Christina (Hausser) Hedger in Eldorado. She married Orval E. 'Rip' Sowers June 4, 1947, and he preceded her in death March 13, 1980. Survivors include a daughter, Beth Phelps of Marion; granddaughter, Sherry and husband 1st Lt. Ryan Kristof of Rapid City, S. D.; grandson, Brendan Phelps of Raleigh; sister, Jan Trovillion of Golconda. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Hedger and sister, Margaret Bunting.

Denzil Briley

BENTON -- Denzil W. Briley, 86, of Benton, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in the Herrin Hospital. He was born in Thompsonville on Dec. 6, 1917, the son of William Cleveland 'Grover' and Ada (Cunningham) Briley. On June 5, 1948, in Thompsonville, he married Kathryn Webber, and she survives. Mr. Briley was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the UMWA District No. 12. He was a retired coal miner, retiring from Orient No. 3. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Briley of Benton; daughter, Linda Briley of Benton; son, David Briley of Carterville; granddaughter, Tina Briley and her daughter, Ariana; grandson, Chris Briley and his children, Jordan and Alison, and their mother, Stacy; granddaughter, Raven Graves and her husband, Jack, and their daughter, Alexis; granddaughters, Sasha and Sondra Briley; grandson, David James Briley; niece, Yvonne Booten of Benton; great-nephew, Tim Booten and wife Judy of Benton; and brother-in-law, Carl Hammers of Thompsonville. Mr. Briley was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lola; and three brothers, Ross, Ellis and Ray. Private graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 21, in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton, with the Rev. Bob Askew officiating. The Morton and Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gilbert Rundles

CAIRO -- Gilbert A. Rundles, 92, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in Daystar Care Center in Cairo. No services are planned. Private interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge. The Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo is in charge of arrangements.

Sharon Carlton

MURPHYSBORO -- Sharon K. Carlton, 54, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Mrs. Carlton's wishes were to be cremated. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with the Rev. Arthur Dehallicort officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Carlton was a coalminer. She was born Feb. 16, 1950, in Wyoming, to Ray Lyday and Martha Dehallicort, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her stepfather, Joe Yadloski of Coello. Survivors include two sons, Randy and Robbie Carlton, both of Royalton; two grandchildren, Raemi Shiann and Drake; one stepbrother, Danny Yadloski of Coello; and one stepsister, Dolly Causey of Aynor, S. C. She was preceded in death by her parents and by one brother, Butch Lyday.

Raymond Hester

DU QUOIN -- Raymond D. Hester, 48, of Chicago, died at 8:55 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Chicago. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Walker Funeral Home in Hurst. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Hester was born Feb. 9, 1956, to Raymond E. and JoAnn (Loucks) Hester. He is survived by his four sisters and their spouses, Terry Rogers of Kenton, Tenn., Tammy Bowers and Mike of Macedonia, Leslie Anders and Rodney of Du Quoin, and Jacqueline Shishkoff and Paul of Romeoville. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jamie Dee Dorris Phoenix

AVA -- Jamie Dee Dorris Phoenix, 32, died at 11:21 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in St. Louis University Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with Rick Sutton officiating. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Phoenix was a business administrator at the Pinckneyville Correctional Center. She was a trustee of Ora Township and a member of the First Baptist Church of Sesser. She coached a Little League softball team. She was born May 26, 1972, in Pinckneyville, to James E. and Wanda F. Merkel Dorris. She married Ivan Bart Phoenix on June 19, 1999, in Benton. She is survived by her husband, Ivan Bart Phoenix of Ava; one daughter, Taylor Danae Cochrane of Ava; one stepson, Craig Allan Phoenix of Waterloo; her parents, James and Wanda Dorris of Sesser; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Benita Dorris and Brian and Pam Dorris, all of Sesser; her paternal grandmother, Lola Dorris of West Frankfort; her maternal grandmother, Mae Merkel of Sesser; her father- and mother-in-law, Irvin and DeFlain Phoenix of Ava; two brothers-in-law, Brett and wife Tammy Phoenix and Nathan and wife Susan Phoenix, all of Ava; and nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children.

Gordon Tennant

HARRISBURG -- Gordon M. Tennant, 70, died at 3:56 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in Harrisburg Medical Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in Tates Chapel Cemetery in Galatia. Burial will be in Tates Chapel Cemetery.
