PINCKNEYVILLE -- Gladys Odessa Gossman, 78, of Pinckneyville, died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit. Gladys was born on March 24, 1926, in Erin, Tenn., the daughter of Venia and Sarah (Livingston) Baggett. She married William C. 'Bud' Gossman on Sept. 16, 1943, in Perryville, Mo., and he preceded her in death on March 27, 1987. Mrs. Gossman was a member of Roe's Dale Baptist Church in Pinckneyville. Survivors include one son, William G. Gossman, his wife, Sherry, and their children, Casey and Taylor Gossman, all of Naperville; two sisters, LaVada Carter of Tennessee and Margaret Dunn of Pinckneyville; one special niece, Brooksie Nell Clark of Pinckneyville; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Edward; three sisters, Hazel, Katherine and Mildred; and one stepdaughter, Wardenia Campbell. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, in Mueller Hill Cemetery

Dorothy R. Leming
COULTERVILLE -- Dorothy R. Leming, 89, of Coulterville, died at 7:02 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in Sparta Community Hospital. Dorothy was born on Nov. 23, 1915, in Coulterville, the daughter of Dave and Mayme (Birchler) Montgomery. She was a member of Grandcote Reformed Presbyterian Church in Coulterville for 77 years. Joining the church at age 12, she; her sister, Viola; and her brothers, D. J. and Lester, rode ponies to Coulterville from the family farm 10 miles southeast of Coulterville. She married Roy Leming on May 10, 1938, and he preceded her in death on June 23, 1985. Dorothy was a charter member of the Swanwick Sewing Club and the Shamrock Quilting Club, serving as an officer for both clubs for many years. She enjoyed sharing her quilts with her family and the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery
Association for their annual Swanwick Picnic. Dorothy enjoyed playing pinochle and solitaire. Survivors include one son, Eugene Leming and his special friend, Judy Howard, both of Coulterville; two daughters and one son-in-law, Karen Huth of Ava and Rogene and Robert Boyd of Cheyenne, Wyo.; one granddaughter, Denise Redmore of Springfield; one grandson, Chris Huth of Carbondale; one brother, James Montgomery of Arnold, Mo.; two sisters, Cleo Jones of Collinsville and Opal Wilson of Coulterville; and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers for Mrs. Leming's services will be Roger Thomas, Willard McBride, James McBride, Larry McBride, Rick Leming and Chris Huth. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy (June 23, 1985); one son-in-law, David Huth (May 10, 1995); three brothers, D. J., Lester and Rodney Montgomery; and six sisters, Lena and Viola Leming, Verna McBride, Imogene and Alice Woodside, and Beth Bumann. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, in Grandcote Reformed Presbyterian Church in Coulterville, with the Rev. Jim Stark officiating. Interment was in Swanwick Bethel Cemetery. Ray H. Smith
MARION -- Ray H. Smith, 87, of Marion, passed away at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, in St. Louis University Hospital. Ray was born on Dec. 2, 1917, in Creal Springs, Illinois, to Henry A. and Mildred (Fletcher) Smith. He married Lucinda Odum on July 20, 1940, in St. Charles, Missouri. She preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 1996. Ray was a retired carpenter, building contractor, and developer. During World War II, he worked in Evansville, Indiana, in a shipyard building landing ship transports. After the war, he began his career as a builder and developer in and around Marion and Southern Illinois. In the early 1970s he started the Ray Smith Construction Company, developed the Ray Smith Subdivision and continued developing that until the last home he built for his daughter in 1991, where she currently lives. Ray was the general contractor on Aldersgate Church when it moved from South Market Street to the corner of DeYoung Street. He also was the contractor for First Church of God and its Family Life Center. Mr. Smith was one of the original board members on the Marion City Housing Authority when it was formed in 1977. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. Ray was a member of the Marion Masonic Lodge No. 89 A. F. a.m. as well as the Constistory of Belleville. He was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a lifetime member of the Carpenter's Union. Ray was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for more than 40 years. He enjoyed visiting with his friends at the round table at Pulley's. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Duncan and her husband Fred of Marion and Diana Dulle and her husband Rich of Pinckneyville. Ray had three grandchildren: David Matthew Gregory and his wife Ashley of Carbondale, David Joshua Dulle of Charleston, Illinois, and Maria Gabriella Dulle of Pinckneyville, Illinois. He is also survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ivalene and Mac Ary of Marion. He is survived by several nieces and nephews and many friends. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lucinda Smith, three sisters, Reathel Seavers, Mae Lawson, Evelyn Rayburn, and one brother Loy Smith. MARION -- Imogene Foley, 74, died at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, in Fountains Nursing Care Center in Marion. She was born on April 29, 1930, in Benton, Mo., to Grover and Clara (Presley) Hefflin. She married Gilbert R. Foley on July 31, 1966, in Benton and he survives. She was a homemaker. She previously worked at Norge Industries in Herrin. She was a Protestant. Survivors include her husband Gilbert R. Foley of Marion; two sons, David L. Norman of Florence, Colo., and John E. Norman and wife Teresa of Rantoul; two sisters, Geraldine Hayes and husband Gene of Lawton, Okla., and Pauline Mack of Sikeston, Mo. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Robert Hefflin and Lloyd Hefflin; four sisters Lucille Spurling, Ruth Robinson, Mary Etherton and Jewell Lear. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. MARION -- Jaunita E. Jones, 87, of Marion, passed away at 12:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005 at home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Jim Jackson and Bill Schell officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 3, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Liberty Cemetery, south of Marion. Mrs. Jones was born on Feb. 16, 1917, in Williamson County, to Ferdinand and Ida (Throgmorton) Boles. She married William L. Jones on Feb. 23, 1946. He preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 2000. Survivors include her son, Leonard R. and Charolette Russell of Marion; daughter, Jincy Mills of Marion; grandsons, Aaron L. and Colleen Russell of Wheaton, Joel Houghtby of Denver, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Marie Russell and Ethan Aaron Russell; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Mary Naomi Boles; brothers, William Troas Boles, Roy Boles, Fred Boles, Dr. Homer Boles and Willis Boles. Mrs. Jones was known for her singing and her piano playing throughout area churches. In her early years, she performed on WGN radio station in Chicago. Along with her husband, they were instrumental in starting a Free-Will Baptist church in Elgin. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday until the hour of services at the funeral home. Rose was born on Jan. 11, 1937, in Murphysboro, to Floyd Childers and Pauline (Dameron) Childers. She was a retired sawyer from Penn Aluminum. Mrs. Dunn was a member of Abundant Life Fellowship in Murphysboro. She is survived by her husband George G. Dunn of Murphysboro; one son, John L. Hill of Decatur; four stepsons Daniel Lee Dunn, Patrick George Dunn, Scot Joel Dunn and Kelly Jay Dunn, all of Erie, Pa.; one granddaughter, Katherine Holden of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; several step-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Childers of Murphysboro and Alvin Childers of Utah; five sisters, Mae Clutts of Murphysboro, Pat Modglin of Greenville, Ind., Sara Greer of Washington, Bernadette Cold of Carterville, and Susie Burkey of Murphysboro; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband John A. Hill, one brother, two sisters, and her parents.

MARION -- Leslie Renee Cullum, 22, of Marion, passed away at 6:55 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, as a result of an automobile accident. Leslie was born on Aug. 6, 1982, in Herrin, to Jerry Cullum and Lisa Mandrell. She attended Marion High School, where she had many friends in life. Miss Cullum enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was an avid animal lover. She was proud of her three dogs, Justice Marie, Stevie Lynn and Sabastian Ray. She also had one cat, Midnight. Survivors include mother, Lisa Mandrell of Marion; father, Jerry Cullum, Johnston City; three brothers, Jason Ray Hood, Herrin, Tony Brooke, Florida and Jerry D. Cullum, Vienna; two sisters, Angel Cullum, Vienna, Jamie Lee Cullum, Vienna; maternal grandparents, Glen and Betty Dunn, West Frankfort; paternal grandparents, Larry and Brenda Cullum, Johnston City; nephew, Jason Taylor Hood, Herrin; aunts and uncles, Wendy Carmickle, Marion, Sheila Cullum, Johnston City, Steve and Shelly Cullum, West Frankfort, Frankie Dunn, West Frankfort; cousins, Raven Helsley, Marion, Tamara Calvert, West Frankfort, Steven Cullum, West Frankfort, Candice Cullum, West Frankfort and Brendon Jude and Haley Dunn. MARION -- Nancy Romano, 72, of Marion, passed away suddenly at 7:50 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was born on Feb. 21, 1932, in St. Luke's Hospital of Maywood, the daughter of Howard Charles and Mildred Frieda (Reitz) Boone. Her working career was with the Illinois Department of Transportation in Chicago, as a private secretary for 25 years until her retirement in 1974. Nancy was united in marriage to Donald Dominick Romano Sr. on Aug. 17, 1971, in Chicago. Together they shared 28 years of marriage until his death came on Aug. 18, 1999. She was a Lutheran. In her passing she leaves behind her son, Donald Romano Jr. of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
