Rhoda Mae Cline
MARION -- Rhoda Mae Cline, 81, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord at 5:45 p. m. Monday, June 21, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Rhoda was the daughter of Henry A. and Zella M. (Bedwell) Spence, and was born Sept. 25, 1922, in the Wolf Creek Community in Williamson County. Her parents preceded her in death as did her stepmother, Flossie Spence. She was united in marriage to Robert Frank Cline on Aug. 19, 1944, in Marion, and together sharing over 59 years of marriage. For many years Rhoda was a switchboard relief operator at the Illinois State Office Building in Marion, making many good friends down through the years. She was a member of Parish Park Baptist Church of Marion and a former longtime member and children's Sunday school teacher at Center Baptist Church of Crab Orchard. Rhoda's commitment to her family was exceeded only by her commitment to her Lord. She was a constant source of encouragement to her family and took great pride in their achievements. Rhoda will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Rhoda is survived by her husband, Robert F. 'Pete' Cline of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis Ann and Harold Dean Hill of Marion and Brenda Mae and Larry Wall of Marion; four grandchildren and their spouses, Brad and Stacey Hill of Huntsville, Ala., Don and Terra Hill of Crab Orchard, Christina and Louie Johnson of Crab Orchard, and Doug and Jennifer Furlow of Williamsville; 10 great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Michael Spence and wife, Brenda of Benton, and Pat Spence and wife, Linda of West Frankfort; half sister, Henrietta Murphy and husband, Leonard of West Frankfort; nieces and nephews, other family members and many good friends. Services for Rhoda Mae Cline will be held at 7 p. m. today at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Tony Foeller officiating. Private burial will be Friday afternoon in Hillcrest Cemetery
in Carterville. Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the funeral from 5 to 7 p. m. today at the funeral home.

CAMBRIA -- Roland U. Rogers, 76, of Blairsville, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Friday, June 25, 2004, at Riggin- Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville. Burial will be in the Blairsville Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro. Roland was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Chicago, to Floyd and Frieda (Scheonamann) Rogers. He married Dorothy Byrley on Feb. 21, 1946, in Chicago. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Cambria; son and daughter-in-law, Roland F. and Peggy Rogers of Carterville; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Donald Kerley of Cambria; five grandchildren, Jane Acevedo of Chicago, Sherri Smith of Joliet, Roland John Rogers of Chicago, Michelle Krcmar of Cambria, and Michael Krcmar of Cambria; three great-grandchildren, Justin Smith and Jessica Smith both of Joliet, and Natasha Acevedo of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother. Roland retired after 39 years from Hayes Distributing in Chicago, a distributor for Miller Brewing Company, where he worked as a truck driver. After his retirement he served as crossing guard at the Hurst-Bush school and presently was the school bus coordinator at the Herrin elementary, where he made sure that the kids got on the right bus. He was a member of the teamster local in Chicago. He honorably served his country in the U. S.
Army during World War II. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro. Roland enjoyed going fishing, drawing and woodworking.

MARION -- Eric William Olson, 39, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, and Rebecca Sue DeNeal Olson, 45, and died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at their home in Marion. ENERGY -- Lucille Thornton, 88, of Energy, died at 11:35 p. m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, in Parkway Manor in Marion. Lucille was born May 26, 1916, in Marion to Eldon P. and Lydia Candis (Norman) Odum. She married John Thornton on April 18, 1951, in Arkansas. He survives of Energy. Mrs. Thornton, along with her husband, formerly owned and operated Thornton's Market in Herrin prior to their retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Energy. Survivors include her husband, John Thornton of Energy; son and daughter-in-law, Johnie L. and Marty Thornton of Herrin; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Bob Stricklin of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Joyce Watson of Herrin; eight grandchildren; Russell and Jennifer Watson Jr. of Herrin, Steve and Kathy Watson of Herrin, Sheree Watson of Indiana, Debra and Steve Dingrando of Marion, John Allen and Denise Murry Jr. of Energy, Bryan and Amy Thornton of Columbus, Ohio, Chris Thornton of Herrin and Angela Thornton of Herrin; 10 great-grandchildren; niece, Leana Odum of Marion; and nephew, Raymond McCormick of Marion. Fuson Jr., who preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 1975, and later married Bluford Sloan, who preceded her in death in 1982. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton. She worked at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale library in the serial/cataloging department. She is survived by two sons, Robert and wife, Jody Fuson of Benton and William D. and wife, June Fuson of Carbondale; a daughter, Blenda Cleath of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren, Chad Fuson of Carbondale, Carrie Cox of Benton, Ben Fuson of Carbondale, Casey Fuson of Carbondale, Lars Cleath of Pittsburgh, and Nels Cleath, of Pittsburgh; and foster grandchild, Jack Knapper of Pittsburgh; three great-grandchildren, Kiley, Korben and Korinn Cox. Mrs. Sloan was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brothers, Russell Holmes, Lawrence Holmes, and sister, Ruby Fuson.

David R. Butler
MURPHYSBORO -- David R. Butler, 89, died at 3:35 p. m. in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born on Aug. 12, 1914, in Jackson County, the son of Francis Butler and Julia Boucher Butler. On Dec 24, 1941, he was married to Velma Crowell. Mr. Butler retired from the Missouri Pacific Railroad (Now the Union Pacific) as supervisor of heavy equipment. He was a member of Lodge 498 AF & AM of Murphysboro and the United Methodist Church. He loved to fish and work in his garden, and he was especially fond of entertaining his great-grandchildren. Survivors include his daughter, Marcia Butler of Murphysboro; two grandchildren, Kellie S. Ellis of Gorham and Willard F. Ellis IV of Ava; two great-grandsons, Austin and Andrew Harris of Du Quoin; four brothers, Daniel Butler of Mascoutah, William of Red Bud, Walter of Mascoutah, and Urban Butler of Gorham; and one sister, Frances Hubbard of Niles, Mich. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma, in 2001, and by a brother Boyd Butler in 1989. Services will be at 11 a. m. today in the Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Memorials are suggested for the Masonic Children's Home in Murphysboro. Josephine 'Bobbie' Andrews
EBENEZER -- Josephine 'Bobbie' Andrews, 83, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2004, at home. Josephine was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, Jackson County Home Extension, Chester Hospital Auxiliary, Reid's Pinochle Card Club and was a Western Egyptian volunteer and a poll judge. She was born on Dec. 4, 1920, in Ebenezer, the daughter of Joseph and Corenne (Vogelsang) Vickers. The Rev. Taylor once said, 'Surely, Josephine Vickers was the most beloved child ever reared in Ebenezer. 'Because of serious illness at the age of 15, she was unable to complete her high school education. Proudly, at age 76, Josephine earned her GED with high honors. She married Chesteen Andrews on Nov. 18, 1939, in St. Charles, Mo. He preceded her in death on Sept. 2, 1980. She is survived by three daughters, Cynthia and husband Walter Dierks of Atlanta, Nancy and husband Roy Dierks of Percy, and Sally Polosky of Ebenezer; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Ann Andrews also of Ebenezer; seven grandchildren, Michael and wife Tina Dierks, David Dierks, Dean and wife Denise Andrews, Carol Andrews, Glenn and wife Tammy Andrews, Matthew Polosky, and Carrie and husband David Holder, and Sheba (R. D. ); great-grandchildren, Nichole Andrews, Ashley Andrews and Chett Andrews; one sister, Mary Alice Lawder and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Joseph Glen Andrews; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and James Coffey, Florence and husband Ollie Stegelmeyer; brother and sister-in-law, John and Jessie Guthman; and brother-in-law, Shelby Lawder. James M. Larry, Sr.
OLMSTED -- James M. Larry, Sr., age 82 of Olmsted, died at 3:15 p. m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at home. He was born on Aug. 16, 1921, in Cairo, the son of Jerry and Jennie (Grace) Larry. He married Gladys Rainwater on Oct. 28, 1945, and she survives. James had worked as an assistant director at Shawnee Development Council and later retired from Burkhart as a dispatcher. He was a master sergeant in the United States
Army and served in Europe in World War II. He was a member and trustee of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Pulaski. He was also a member of the Louis Phares American Legion Post 178 of Villa Ridge, and the Caledonia Lodge 47 AF & AM. He served on the Mound City National Cemetery
Preservation Committee, the SIDEZ Committee and the Shawnee Empowerment Zone. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Larry of Olmsted; two sons, Jim and wife Brenda Larry of Olmsted, and Darrell and wife Fern Larry of Olmsted; one daughter, Sharon and husband Randy Neely of Olmsted; eight grandchildren, Shawn and wife Stacy Larry, Cedric Larry, Allen and wife Tina Jordan, Brad and wife Sharrol Jordan, Gail and husband Joe Dluky, Randel and wife Karen Neely, Sheena Neely, and Brian Neely; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and Norman Larry. Services will be on Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 11 a. m. at Crain Funeral Home in Ullin, with the Rev. R. L. Robinson and the Rev. Terry Kern officiating. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors by the Louis Phares American Legion Post 178. TILDEN -- Robert D. King, 55, died Monday, June 21, 2004, in Fairway Nursing and Rehab Center in Evansville, Ind. Services will be at 1 p. m. Mr. King was a tech aid at Chester Mental Health. He was a member of Coulterville VFW 6865. He was a U. S.
Army veteran of Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. He was born July 25, 2004, in Red Bud, the son of Clifford A. King and Ella Mae Snodgrass King. He married Thelma R. Rothwell on Dec. 1, 1967, in Chester. She preceded him in death on June 5, 2002. Survivors include one son David M. King of Evansville; one daughter, Christy J. King of Rockwood; two grandchildren, Sydney King and Colton King; one sister, Beverly Krueger of Salem and one brother, Carl G. King of Sparta. His parents and one brother, Lowell A. King, preceded him in death.
Thelma Fowler
MARION -- Thelma W. Fowler, 101, of Marion, passed away at 3:05 p. m. Saturday, June 19th, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. She was born on March 2, 1903, in Champaign, the daughter of Nathan and Lola Grace (Smith) Wiles. Thelma met her husband in Champaign and was united in marriage to August L. 'Gus' Fowler on Aug. 10, 1924, in Champaign. Together they shared over 73 years until his death came on Nov. 29, 1997. Her working career was as a bookkeeper in her husband's law office for more than 50 years until her retirement. Thelma was a longtime and present oldest member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion. Some of the other organizations Thelma was actively involved with during her lifetime were the Fortnightly Club, Clio Club, P. E. O. Club and Marion Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by two nieces, Jeanne Hauck and her husband, Roland, of Florence, Ala., and Louise Bucher of Champaign; two nephews, Charles William Wiles of Lambertville, Mich., and Donald Arthur Wiles of Clearwater, Fla., also several other nieces and nephews, other family members; longtime friends and business associate, William J. and Clara Ruth Novick of Marion, and many life long friends. Those who preceded Thelma in death were her parents; husband, Gus Fowler; sister, Edna Gordon; brother, Harold Archie Wiles; niece, Catherine Gordon and nephew, John Gordon. Arrangements for Thelma W. Fowler have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St. in Marion, IL. The visitation will be held between 9 and 11 a. m. MURPHYSBORO -- Virginia O. Yow, 87, of Murphysboro, passed away at 7:08 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, with the Rev. Danny Boyd officiating. Interment will be held at McKinney Hill Cemetery

Virginia was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Jonesboro, to Edward Jefferson and Lucinda Caroline (Ferris) Tompkins. She married James Edward Yow on Oct. 11, 1931, in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1991. She is also preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Bill Eberhardt of Sun City, Ariz., Doris and Jim Presley of Murphysboro and Patsy 'Pat' and Stanley Dean of Carbondale; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Virginia was a Protestant. She was employed by the ammunition industry of the Odell area in Crab Orchard Refuge while her husband served in the U. S.
Army Air Corps during World War II. Virginia was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.
