Leslie L. Lindy
CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Leslie L. Lindy, 78, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital. He was born May 29, 1926, in Hayti, Mo., the son of Charles Jacob and Ruby Mizzell Lindy. He and Wanda Barnes were married June 30 1947, in West Frankfort. Mr. Lindy had been a salesman and route supervisor for Chesty Foods, inc. (potato chip company), Old Judge Coffee and General Grocers. He owned and operated Lindy Line Restaurant and Train Museum and the Lindy Sales Co., which sold wholesale cigars. He was a member of Mount Auburn Christian Church, Capaha Antique Car Club, Train Collectors Association and Corvair Society of America. Mr. Lindy served in the U. S.
Army during World War II and the Korean conflict and received a Purple Heart. Survivors include his wife; a son, Les Lindy Jr. and wife Helen of Gordonville; daughter, Linda Lou Suedekum and husband Jerry of Jackson; three brothers, Daniel and Fred Lindy of Chaffee, Mo., and Larry Lindy of Saraland, Ala.; three grandchildren, Sara and Sylvia Lindy of Gordonville, and Meredith Musgraves of Cape Girardeau. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles J. Lindy, Jr., and a grandson, Marcus David Musgraves. MODOC -- Gary W. Kempfer, 64, passed away at 9:55 a. m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital South in St. Louis. He was born to the late Frank and Clara (DeRousse) Kempfer on Feb. 1, 1940, in Modoc. He married Shelba Brown on Oct. 15, 1966, at St. Leo Catholic Church. He was a farmer. He was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church in Modoc and the Randolph County Farm Bureau. He was a retired
Army reservist. Survivors include his wife, Shelba Kempfer of Modoc; five siblings, Fern Nitzsche and husband Cleo of Walsh, Virgil "Buddy" Kempfer and wife Pat of Red Bud, Wilma Wagner and husband Glen of Red Bud, Ina Doiron and husband Ernie of Prairie du Rocher, and Betty Slaughter of Red Bud; three Godchildren, Gary Doiron, Lisa Heiken and Louis Franklin; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a. m. Friday, July 16, 2004, in St. Leo Catholic Church in Modoc, with Father Richard Weidert and Monsignor Dennis Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in the St. Leo Catholic Church Cemetery. MARION -- Curtis H. Shirley, 84, of Marion, formerly of Harrisburg, died at 4:55 p. m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in Harrisburg Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a. m. Friday in Gaskins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Russell Caudill officiating and the Rev. Bernie Cowgill assisting. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery
in Harrisburg. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. today in the funeral home. Mr. Shirley was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Monterey, Tenn., to Noah Shirley and Mary Jane Osborn. He married Helen Killman on Feb. 16, 1968. He was a carpenter. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran. Survivors include his wife of Marion; three sons, Curtis L. Shirley of Las Vegas, Royce Dale Shirley of Dayton, Ohio, and Wayne Shirley of Tennessee; two sisters, Pearl Maples of Friendsville, Tenn., and Dimple Williams of Dayton; three stepdaughters, Debra Sweat of Seattle, Wash., James Sweat of Tulsa, Okla., and Kimberly Sweat of Marion; nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

PERCY -- Elmer A. Joost, 78, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. Mr. Joost was born Saturday, April 3, 1926, in Percy, to Herman and Emma Meyerhoff Joost. He joined Ida M. Beyer in marriage Sept. 21, 1957, in Wine Hill. She preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2000. He was a World War II veteran having served in the
Army PFC. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Wine Hill. He belonged to the Lutheran Men in Worship at St. Peter's Lutheran Church and the B. B. K. American Legion Post 480 in Steeleville. He was a farmer. He is survived by two sons, Michael Joost of Campbell Hill, David Joost of Oakville; two granddaughters, Jenny and Megan Joost; one sister, Erna Joost of Percy. Mr. Joost was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Friday, July 16, 2004, in St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Wine Hill, with the Revs. Edwin A. Reuter and Kathryn D. William Frank Hartmann
PERCY -- William Frank Hartmann, 93, died at 2:01 p. m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Oakgrove Nursing Home in Carbondale. Mr. Hartmann was born Monday, June 12, 1911, in Steeleville, to William Herman and Frances Ivans Hartman. He married Ardath L. Lohrding on Aug. 22, 1931, in Wine Hill. She preceded him in death on Dec. 11, 2003. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleveille. He retired from the American Device and was previously a coal miner at Moffat Mines in Sparta. He is survived by two sons, Arkel Hartmann and wife Dephane of Marion, Robert Hartmann and wife Erjuana of Percy; one daughter, Dorothy Lively and husband Bill of Percy; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Zeidler of Steeleville, Florence Lehnhoff of San Jose, Calif., and Anita Whittier of Independence, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Friday, July 16, 2004, at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville, with the Rev. MARION -- Pauline E. Fosse, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at St John's Hospital in Springfield. She was born April 23, 1920, in Williamson County to Oscar and Bertha (McAnelly) Blumenstock. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Marion. She was well known for making pies. She was famous for her Moon Apple Pie. She enjoyed baking pies. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Sherron Fosse of Livingston, Texas, Ray and Carol Fosse of Danville, Calif., and Jim and Cissie Fosse of Marion; six grandchildren, Tim and wife Kim Fosse of Jessup, Ga., Nicole and husband Jim Mancuso of Phoenix, Lindsey Fosse of Danville, Calif., Melody Fosse of Tulsa, Okla., Michelle Fosse of Marion, and Ryan Fosse of Marion; three great-grandchildren, Savannah Fosse and Timothy Fosse Jr., both of Rincon, Ga., and Braddock Fosse of Jessup, Ga.; three sisters, Allene Snider, Agnus Jones and Zella Mae McCree, all of Marion; one brother, Sherman Blumenstock of Marion; and several nieces and nephews. MURPHYSBORO -- Ruth Lee Brown, 84, of Murphysboro, formerly of Union County, died at 3:30 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004 at her home in Murphysboro. She was born July 10, 1920, the daughter of Harry L. and Cornelia (Balden) Brown. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Church of Murphysboro. She was very active in Senior Citizens in Murphysboro and loved playing bridge with her friends. She was employed at Wal-mart in Murphysboro for more than 18 years. She is survived by her two sons, Ken Whitaker of Murphysboro and Bill Whitaker of Reno, Nev.; eight grandchildren; one brother, James Oakley Brown of Des Moines, Iowa; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. Services for Ruth Lee Brown will be held at 11 a. m. Betty Jo Bush
MARION -- Betty Jo Bush, 78, of Marion, died at noon Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin. Betty was born on Oct. 13, 1925, in Herrin to Arthur and Effie (Stanley) Lindsey. She married Edgar Dean Bush on June 15, 1953, in Herrin. He preceded her in death on June 15, 1989. Before her retirement, Betty Jo worked as a waitress for various restaurants in the area and finally with her husband at their photo shop in downtown Marion. She attended First United Methodist Church in Herrin. In her spare time she enjoyed reading Agatha Christie novels and playing music on her piano. She loved animals and had a cat of her own. Survivors include her step-daughter, Donna Ray of West Vienna; her sister-in-law, Violet June Lindsey of Hollywood, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews, Bart Lindsey of Herrin, Dolores McConnell of Herrin, Brad Lindsey of Clemmons, N. C., Robert Lindsey of Oklahoma, Rodney Lindsey of Marion, David and Steve Lindsey of Florida, and Rhonda Butterworth of California. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Wendell, Emanuel and Howard Lindsey; and two sisters, Ina Mae and Floy Lindsey. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Herrin. MARION -- Evelyn Otey, 81, of Decatur, Ala., formerly of Marion, died at 11:30 a. m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at the Decatur General Hospital. She was born on May 12, 1923, in Spillertown, the daughter of Cliff and Alma (Stowers) Franklin. She married Roy Dean Otey in 1940 and he died in 1989. Mrs. Otey was a homemaker. Survivors include one daughter, Patti Stone of Polson, Mont.; two granddaughters, Sherry Kemp of Decatur, Ala., and Leslie Darafeev of Upland, Calif.; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister. Services will be at 1 p. m. Wednesday at the East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy, with the Rev. Roger Russell officiating. VALIER -- Nicole 'Nikki' Lynn House, 32, of Valier, died at 7:40 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She went to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She is the daughter of Clinton Humphrey and Joyce (Johnson) Johns. She married David Preston House on Sept. 24, 1994, and he survives. She was a licensed practical nurse and a member of the All Nations Church in Marion. In addition to her husband, Preston, she is survived by four children, Jace Aaron House, Tristan Patrick House, Julian Paul House and Keaton Elisha House, all of Valier; her mother, Joyce Johns of Thompsonville; her father, Clinton and wife Tenna Humphrey of Benton; one sister, Sarah Ann Humphrey of Rumson, N. J.; one brother, Frank Lee Humphrey of Benton; one step-brother, Sean Mocaby of Herrin; her maternal grandmother, Harriet Ann Johnson of Thompsonville; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, David and Sharon House of Benton; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Scott and Leigh Ann Kerley of Ewing; two nieces, Hadleigh and Emeline Kerley; one nephew, Griffen Kerley; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mrs. House was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, James Johnson, and her paternal grandparents, Frank and Betty Humphrey. Mr. Gasser was born May 17, 1928, in Marissa to Arthur A. and Christina A. (Hacker) Gasser. He married Shirley Maxine Creekpaum on July 7, 1956, in Marissa. She passed away Nov. 9, 1994. Survivors include one son, Arthur Gasser of Walsh; one daughter, Debbie Kelley of Edwardsville; two grandchildren, John and Christina Kelley; a very special and dear lady, Willa Dietz of Sparta; and one sister, Elizabeth M. BERWYN -- Peter P. Slobodnjak, 36, of Berwyn passed away suddenly at 5:11 a. m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in Loyola Hospital of Maywood. He was born Feb. 19, 1968, in Chicago, the son of Peter and Marie (Froschommer) Slobodnjak. Peter's working career was that of a computer web designer. He was also a member of the Lamplighters Gospel Singers Group. He was united in marriage to Cheryl Germann on Dec. 17, 2000, in Bridgeview Church of God in Bridgeview. He is survived by his parents, Peter and Marie Slobodnjak of Bridgeview; his wife, Cheryl Slobodnjak of Berwyn; his sister, Heidie Slobodnjak of Broadview; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roscoe and Brenda Germann of Berwyn; his uncle, Ron Little of Berwyn; other family members; and many friends. Marcella, the daughter of Verdell William and Marcella Rose (Riley) Jacobs, was born July 2, 1938, in Cambria. She was united in marriage to William E. Caudell on July 26, 1957, in Joliet. He passed away Dec. 1, 1987. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Susan J. and Jimmy Talarico of Parrish, N. Y., and Jennifer E. Caudell of Carbondale; two sons and one daughter-in-law, James E. and Wini Caudell of Carbondale and W. Thomas Caudell of Waterford, Mich.; four grandchildren, Christopher Talarico, Ashley Caudell, James Caudell and Anada Syler; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Flo and Kenneth Craig, Sue and Les Saunders, Shirley Williams, Nancy Goodermot, and Pammy Jacobs; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Jim and Nancy Jacobs, Robert Jacobs, and Scott and Shawna Jacobs; other family members; and many friends.
