Susannah Whetstone

Susannah Whetstone, 93, of Burnt Prairie, died Thursday evening, July 27, 2000 at Meadowood Nursing Home in Grayville.

She was born June 23, 1907 in White County, the daughter of Walter and Margaret Morrison Cash. She married John Whetstone December 20, 1924 in Carmi and he preceded her in death on July 14, 1985.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, John L. Whetstone of Carmi, Walter C. & Sharon Whetstone of Albion and James Robert & Elizabeth Whetstone of Monticello; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce W. & Raymond Scudamore of Carmi; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, and one brother.

Mrs. Whetstone joined the Burnt Prairie Chapter of Eastern Star #50 on April 2, 1937. She joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Burnt Prairie on February 1, 1920.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday July 30, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Mary Sue Whetstone-Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Burnt Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday July 29, 2000 at the funeral home.

Paul Vernon Puntney

Paul Vernon Puntney, 81 of Carmi, died early Saturday morning, July 29, 2000 at his home.

He was born July 6, 1919, in Carmi, the son of Fred and Clara Craig Puntney. He married E. Patricia Harman in 1946 in Carmi and she survives.

He is also survived by 2 daughters, Paula Price of Evansville, IN and Mary Craig Puntney of St. Louis, MO; 2 grandchildren, Martha Price and James Paul Price, both of Edwardsville, IL; and 1 sister, Mary Alice Barber of Evansville, IN. He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Walter Fred Puntney.

Mr. Puntney was retired from the oil field. He was an Army WWII veteran and a member of the American Legion Post #224 of Carmi. He belonged to the First United Methodist Church in Carmi.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in St. Polycarp Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church.

Velma F. Simmons.

Velma Florene Willis Simmons, 89, of Maunie died Wednesday evening August 2, 2000 at the Skilled Care Unit of White County Hospital.

She was born July 23, 1911 in Electra, Texas, the daughter of Henry Claude and Ella Camelia (Dobie) Guthrie. She married James Hilton Willis on January 12, 1928 in Colorado City, Texas. To this union, 3 daughters were born. They moved to Illinois in July 1942. She later married Ed Simmons on November 13, 1959, and he survives.

Also surviving are 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy & Richard McKain of Boonville, IN, Marjorie & Norb Maier of Crossville, and Merle & Jack Shedelbower of Newton, 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 6 step great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and 7 step great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters, Nona Lee Boatler and Mable Erwin.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, with Robby King officiating. Visitation will be from noon until time of services on Saturday. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi.

Clyde B. Duvall

Clyde B. Duvall, 92 of Carmi, died Saturday August 12, 2000 at the home of his son Doyle in Lockport, IL.

He was born July 12, 1908 in Grayson County, Kentucky the son of Jacob and Mary (Carroll) Duvall.

He was married to Ida (Stewart) Duvall on December 8, 1926 in Grayson County, Kentucky and she preceded him in death on October 28, 1987.

Mr. Duvall was a retired farmer. Clyde was the subject of a book written in his honor, titled, “True Kentucky Tales and Escapades of Clyde Duvall”. Anyone wishing to read of Clyde’s colorful life can find the book at the Carmi Library, Willard Library in Evansville, IN, and the Leitchfield Kentucky Library.

He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Clyde and Lois Duvall, Jr of Grand Rapids, MI, Guy and Carol Duvall of Portage, IN, James and Rosemary Duvall of Evansville, IN, and Doyle and Sherrie Duvall of Lockport, IL; two daughters, Ethel Guzdowski of Merritt Island, FL, and Lois Reisch of Coco Beach, FL; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and June Duvall of Florida, and one brother-in-law, Frank Coulter of Grayville. He was preceded in death by one son, Charles Duvall, one daughter, Mary Franks, five brothers, Chester, Robert, Charles, Theodore and James Duvall, and three sisters, Melvina Stinson, Polly Stewart, and Hallie Coulter.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Kuykendall Cemetery.

Trella F. Drew

Trella F. Drew, 58 of Carmi, died Wednesday morning August 16, 2000 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.

She was born January 1, 1942 in Carmi the daughter of Irving and Ina (Lloyd) Drew. She had been married to Eugene “Jake” Roark and he survives in Carmi.

Ms. Drew had been a home health care provider for several years.

She is survived by two sons, Gregory Drew of Carmi, and Russell Drew of Naples, FL; one sister, Rose Bade of Oilton, OK. She had two special cats, “Garfield”, and “Cally”. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Basil, Donald, and Irving Drew.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday August 19, 2000 at Kuykendall Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Cemetery.

The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Florence E. Robinson

Florence E. Robinson, 76 of Carmi, died Sunday evening August 20, 2000 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, IN.

She was born June 9, 1924 in Carmi the daughter Charles William and Ida (Collins) Dungy. She married John Wesley Robinson and he preceded her in death on December 29, 1993.

She is survived by one son, John William Robinson of Washington, D.C.; one granddaughter Janine Robinson; two sisters, Evelyn D. Calvert and Alyce D. Scott both of Carmi, and one brother, Leonard Dungey of Carmi. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Sherod Dungy and two sisters, Mary Macmurray and Katie Harrison.

Mrs. Robinson attended the First United Methodist Church and the Nazarene Church both in Carmi.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday August 24, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in North Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Robert Gerald Hill

Robert Gerald Hill, 84 of Carmi, died Wednesday evening August 23, 2000 at Cornerstone White County Medical Center. He was born July 1, 1916 in Indian Creek Township the son of Robert Porter and Mattie O. (DeBoard) Hill. He was married to Willena Mayberry on July 28, 1938 and she preceded him in death on September 9, 1985.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, R. Steven and Jeanne Hill of Ft. Wayne, IN; two grandchildren, Megan and Sean Hill; one sister, Robylee Gott of Carmi and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Kittinger.

Mr. Hill retired after 30 years as a salesman for Sears. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carmi.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday August 25, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Oddfellows Cemetery in Norris City. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Friday. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the Cancer Fund.

Dovie C. “Jackie” Hamilton

Dovie C. “Jackie” Hamilton, 86, died Thursday afternoon, August 24, 2000 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Home in Carmi. She was born October 15, 1913 in Pope County, the daughter of James Harvey Gibbs and Cora Lee Cummins.

She is survived by 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Paul Hogue, Jr. of Carmi, James and Julie Hogue of Nashville, TN, Anthony Scott and Karen Hogue of Carmi, Lucretia Ann and Leon Norman of Cullman, AL, Paula K. and Rocky Palmer of Kansas City, MO, Margaret Elizabeth and Michael Winfrey of Kansas City, MO, Vicky Lynn and Barry Flowers of Maunie, Karla Gay and Bill R. Taylor of Carmi, Sandra Dawn and Steve E. Griffin of Carmi and Shari Jo and Ed Banks, Jr. of Carmi, several great and great-great grandchildren, and a sister, Lottie Hall of Bakersfield, CA. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lucile Lorine “Speck” Hogue.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Jennifer Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Newman Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service.

Darrel Ray Mears

Darrel Ray Mears, 43 of Springfield, IL died Thursday evening August 31, 2000 at his home. He was born February 23, 1957 in New Haven, IL the son of Donald Ray and Laura Blazier Mears.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Laura and William Steffey of Homer, IL; one brother, Keith Mears of Rantoul, IL; one nephew, Brad Mears of Rantoul, and one niece Michelle Mears of Olivet University. He was preceded in death by his father and both sets of grandparents.

He was a graduate of Rantoul Township High School and had been disabled for a number of years.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday September 5, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, IL with Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery near New Haven, IL. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday September 4, 2000 at the funeral home.

Nettie J. Mick Ellzey

Nettie J. Mick Ellzey, 70 of Carmi, died Friday morning September 8, 2000 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center. She was born August 1, 1930 in Maunie the daughter of Fred A. and Rachel (Kimbrell) Mick.

She had been married to Ben Ellzey.

She is survived by one son, Larry Ellzey of Houston, TX; one sister, Mary Beth Pollard of Carmi; one brother, Arthur A. Mick of Carmi, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred F. Mick, and Paul E. Mick, and four sisters, Zola Brashier, Deanie Brown, Alice Thomas, and Betty Williams.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday September 10, 2000 at North Maple Ridge Cemetery. No visitation will be held. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Alvin H. Hart

Alvin H. Hart 70 of Indianapolis, IN, and formerly of Maunie, died Wednesday morning September 13, 2000 in Indianapolis. He was born March 22, 1930 in Maunie, the son of Alvin H. and Fern LaMar Hart. He was raised in the home of his grandparents, Robert F. and Carrie LaMar. He married Ann McLeaster and she survives.

Mr. Hart was recognized as a leader in the insurance industry. He served as Vice President of Gregory & Appel Insurance for 20 years, retiring in 1995. Prior to that he was Marketing Manager of Commercial Union Insurance from 1967-78. He was appointed by Harry McClain, Insurance Commissioner, to implement the education program accepted industry-wide by the Independent Insurance Agents Association. Al provided insurance counsel to many African-American owned Indianapolis based businesses such as Mays Chemical, Payton Wells, and Greater St. Mark Baptist Church. November 17, 1995 was recognized as “Alvin H. Hart Day” by then Mayor Stephen Goldsmith. Mr. Hart was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was an active member of First Trinity Lutheran Church for many years. He was also a volunteer at Emerson Nursing Home, transporting residents to church and hosting numerous social activities for residents and serving as the chief financial source for such events. He also provided financial support and insurance guidance to numerous not-for-profit organizations such as the Indiana Historical Society. He was a member of the Indianapolis Athletic Club, the Scottish Rite, Murat Temple. He graduated from Indiana University School of Business in 1954 and was a member of the Indiana University Hoosier Hundred Varsity Club.

Mr. Hart is survived by his mother, Fern Pittman of Mt. Vernon, IN; his wife Ann; one daughter and son-in-law, Alison and Chris O’Malley of Carmel, IN; one grandson, Jack O’Malley; one sister and brother-in-law Betty and James DeLong of Carmi; and one brother, Larry Pittman of Mt. Vernon, IN. His father preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday September 16, 2000 at the Leppert & Hensley Funeral Home in Indianapolis. Visitation will also be held there on Friday from 3-8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday September 18, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Bill Fechtig officiating. Burial will be in Little Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at Kittinger-Fair.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Maunie United Methodist Church, or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in care of the funeral home.

John A. Deom

John A. Deom, 77 of Springerton, died Thursday afternoon September 21, 2000 at the Marion V.A. Center. He was born March 3, 1923 in Springerton the son of John B. and Nellie (Rankin) Deom.

He married Anna Louise Dolan on January 3, 1952 at St. Patrick’s Church in Enfield and she survives.

Mr. Deom was a farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He was a member of the Springerton American Legion, and the Carmi V.F.W. He was also a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield.

He is survived by his wife, one son and daughter-in-law, John and Carol Deom of Enfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Terry Brown of Enfield; four grandchildren, John Alexander Deom, Alyssa Deom, Charla Ann Brown, and Leah Nicole Brown; a daughter-in-law, Jane Deom of Mill Shoals; one brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Naydeen Deom of Carmi, one sister, Rosellen Unfried of Evansville and one aunt, Wilma Porter of Fallsofrough, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Tim Deom.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday September 25, 2000 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield with Burial in the church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.

Bernadine C. Brown

Bernadine C. Brown, 90 of Carmi died Monday evening September 25, 2000 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center. She was born May 27, 1910 in Burnt Prairie, the daughter of Dr. A.J. and Cathryn (Hanks) Coale.

She married Ronald W. Brown on November 30, 1935 in Carmi and he preceded her in death on July 6, 1979.

Mrs. Brown had been a vice president at White County Bank in Carmi, retiring after nearly 40 years of service. She was a member of the Carmi B.PW., a member and past president of the Carmi American Legion Post #224 Auxiliary. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church where she had served as an elder, secretary of the Sunday school, and had been in the church choir for 59 years.

She is survived by two nieces, Ruth Myers of McLeansboro and Sandra Hill of Springfield; three great-nieces, Laurie Greenwood of Alton, Amy Collins of Shelbyville, KY, and Stacy Adams of McLeansboro; two great-nephews, Daniel Myers of McLeansboro and Andrew Hill of Chicago; four great-great-nieces and two great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Doris Hill and Helen May Coale, and one nephew, Jack Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday September, 28, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church in Carmi with Burial in Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday September 27, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.
