Donna L. Everhart

JASONVILLE - Donna L. Everhart, 81, of Lewis, died at 8:01 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2003 in West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. She was a retired seamstress from Sears. She was born May 9, 1921 in Sullivan County to Earl Sexton and Della Gadberry Sexton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight E. Everhart, who died in 1991. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and James Shields of Linton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Carol Everhart of Clinton, and David and Jane Everhart of Riley; one grandson, David Eric Everhart and wife Monique; one step-grandson, Mike Clodfeller; one sister, Una Mae Beadle of Michigan. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers. She was a member of Briley Chapel Community Church, Homemakers Club of Pierson Township; and was active in Vigo County Farm Bureau Home Economics. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at McClanahan and Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. Bernie Jackson officiating. Interment is in Claiborne cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Alzheimer's Association, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

C. Frank Martin

C. Frank Martin, 72, of Terre Haute, died Thursday, April 17, 2003 in Kindred Hospital in Indianapolis. He owned and operated Berry's Pest Control Company until his retirement in 1996. He was born May 30, 1930 in El Reno, Okla. to Charles Martin and Mary Frances Nighswander Martin. Survivors include his wife Betty whom he married on Aug. 18, 1956; one sister, Marilee Clarke and her husband Patrick of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Charles Martin of Portland, Ore.; one sister-in-law, Patricia Ettensohn and her husband, Robert of Marco Island, Fla.; two nephews, Michael Ettensohn and his wife Janet of Fort Wayne and Robert Ettensohn and his wife Carol of Lakeland Fla.; one niece, Erin Boling and her husband Brian of Milwaukie, Ore.; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews and members of his small church community group at Sacred Heart Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Barbara Martin. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and was a member of the original Team Able. He was awarded the Purple Heart with leaf and achieved recognition as a Master Jumper. He was past National Commander of La Societe de Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, (the 40&8), past Chef of Indiana's 40&8, and a life member of the local Voiture 21, 40&8. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 104 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574. He also was a member of the 82nd Airborne Association, an honorary member of the British Royal Legion and the Royal Canadian Legion. He attended the U.S. Military Academy and was a graduate of Indiana University. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma Scholastic Honorary and Phi Delta Theta social fraternity and chairperson of Wandering Greeks Association. He was active in the Vigo County community, he was past president of the Terre Haute Lions Club, a member of the German Oberlandler Club, past chairman of the Job Service Employment Council, a member of the board of the Wabash Valley American Red Cross, and the Vietnam/Korea State Memorial Commission. He served eight years on the Indiana Pesticide Review Board and was an honorary life member of the Indiana Pest Control Association. He received the honorary "Sagamore of the Wabash" title from Gov. Robert Orr in 1987 and also was named a Kentucky Colonel by the governor of Kentucky. He was an active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Terre Haute where he served as lector, communion minister and on the school commission. He also volunteered as a reader to the younger children at the school. Pallbearers are Clarence Brink, Bill Jerse, Gary Stewart, Donald Ross, Michael Ettensohn, and Robert Ettensohn. Past officers of the American Legion and 40&8 are honorary pallbearers. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church with the Rev. Russell Zint officiating. Visitation is Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., where a brief prayer service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 104 will provide military graveside services. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus School, 1330 Lafayette Ave. Terre Haute, IN 47806, or to the Nurses Training Education Fund Voiture 21, 40&8.

Mike Simbol

Mike Simbol, 95, of Terre Haute died at 4:06 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2003 in Union Hospital. He was a retired farmer. He was born Dec. 18, 1907 in Spring Valley, Ill., to George Simbol and Mary Daas Simbol. Survivors include his wife, Mary Malooley Simbol, whom he married March 21, 1940; four daughters, Nora Simbol Mike and husband Johnny of Louisville, Ky., and Esther Simbol, Nellie Simbol and Mary Ann Simbol, all of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Curtis S. Bodine and wife Kelly of Terre Haute and Michelle Mike Nicholas and husband James of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters-in-law, Louise Grohovsky, Judy Winniski and Rose Malooley, all of Terre Haute; several nieces, nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and out-of-state nieces and nephews, Fouad Maalouli, Nellie Maalouli, Dr. Elias Chahine, George Chahine, Regina Chemali, Mary Chahine and Dr. Fadi Chahine. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Chaim Simbol of Sao Paulo, Brazil; and two sisters, Zahia Chahine and Bahia Maalouli, both of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was a member and the oldest male parishioner of St. George Orthodox Church, which he attended regularly until his death. On Oct. 23, 1983 he was presented the Meritorious Service Award for service to his church by Archbishop Philip Saliba. Services are 11 a.m. today in St. George Orthodox Church with the Very Rev. Anthony Yazge of St. George Church and the Rev. Deacon Elias Corey both of Terre Haute, Very Rev. George M. Rados of Potomac, Md., Very Rev. Elias Bitar of Little Falls, N.J., and Very Rev. Alexander Atty of Louisville, Ky. Burial is in New Haven, cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to services today. Pallbearers are his nephews, Larry Grohovosky, Gary Grohovsky, Bobby Grohovsky, Eddie Malooley, Tim Malooley all of Terre Haute and Jimmy George, Mark Poulos, and Alan Poulas all of Indianapolis. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to St. George Orthodox Church, 1900 S. Fourth St., Terre Haute, IN 47802. DeBaun Springhill Chapel assisted with arrangements.

James D. Villa

James D. Villa, 83, of Terre Haute died Saturday, April 19, 2003 in his residence. He was a retired coal miner form the Amax Coal Co. where he worked for 43 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Kerkez. He was born July 2, 1919 in Clinton to John Villa and Rose Bertolino Villa. Survivors include three sons, James D. Villa Jr. of Fort Wayne, John Villa of Chicago; and Father Joseph Villa from Clinton; one daughter, Nancy Adams and her husband Steve, of Indianapolis; two sisters, Irene Dal Sasso and Ruth Ann Ferrare both of Clinton; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Georgia Krill. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Lawton Byrum Post 972 and former member of the Blanford Sportsman Club. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. Joseph Villa officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn cemetery. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 will conduct military gravesite services. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Callahan Funeral Home. Donations may be made to either the Sacred Heart of Clinton School or to the St. Meinrad Arch Abbey.

Wanda M. Pethtel

SULLIVAN - Wanda M. Pethtel, 96, of Sullivan, died at 6:40 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003 in Sullivan Co. Community Hospital. She retired as a cook in Graysville School. She was born Sept. 3, 1906 in Boone County to Edward Parrigen and Myrtle Sutton Parrigen. She was preceded in death by her husband Claude Pethtel. Survivors include two sons, Bill D. Pethtel of Las Vegas, Nev. and Richard D. Pethtel of Naples, Fla.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was a member of Sullivan First Christian Church, Order of Eastern Star No. 188, Home Economics Club and the Garden Club. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Banks and Brust Funeral Home with the Revs. Dale Wise and David Cox officiating. Burial will be in Center Ridge cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Margaret Barnhart

Margaret Barnhart, 97, of Terre Haute died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Greely Health Care Center in Stillwater, Minn. She was a retired secretary for the former General Telephone Co. She was born April 5, 1906, in Coalton, Ohio, to Frank Barnhart and Myrtle Kelly Barnhart. Survivors include cousins, Keith Kelly, Jim and Holly Kelly and their sons, Justin and Brandon, Bruce and Marilyn Kelly and their daughters, Annie and Karyn, all of South Sioux City, Neb., Kim Kelly and Steve Nickelson of Lincoln, Neb.; Michael and Sharon Fresvik of White Bear Lake, Minn., Ted and Janelle Fresvik and their daughter, Clare, Anna and Nathaniel Bailey and their sons, Isaac and Lincoln of Duluth, Minn., and Erin and Andy Pratt of St. Paul, Minn. She was a member of Telephone Pioneers, YWCA and United Methodist Temple. Services are 1 p.m. Friday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Brian White officiating. Burial is in Farmersburg Westlawn cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Friday.

Virginia S. Johnson

Virginia S. Johnson, 80, of Terre Haute, died late Monday night, Feb. 16, 2004, in Davis Gardens Nursing Home. She had worked at the Card Cottage in Southland Shopping Center, the Schultz Family Store and then worked as a greeter at Terre Haute First National Bank Springhill Center. Her husband, Charles O. "Huck" Johnson, died June 4, 1996. Survivors include one son, Donald L. Johnson of Terre Haute; one daughter, Pat Huber and her husband, Irv of Fillmore; grandchildren, Tammy Terry and her husband, Greg and Toni Johnson, all of Terre Haute, Terry Johnson and his wife, Debi of Bellville, Ill., Ty Huber and his wife, Stacy of Bainbridge and Steve Huber of Chicago; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was a member of United Methodist Temple, the Maryland E.H. Club and a member of the Mother Bees. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Truelove officiating. Burial is in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

William J. Mankin

Dr. William J. Mankin, 80, of Terre Haute died Monday morning, Feb. 16, 2004, in Union Hospital. Dr. Mankin practiced medicine as an ophthalmologist in Terre Haute for many years. He was the former chief of staff and president of staff at Union Hospital. He was a 1948 graduate of Indiana State University and a 1952 graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and attended London School of Ophthamology. In 1984, he was named a Distinguished Indiana State University Alumni. In March 2002, he received a Certificate of Distinction for the practice of medicine for 50 years. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Gideons International and of First Baptist Church in Terre Haute. Dr. Mankin was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II, serving in the Asiatic Pacific campaigns as a Pharmacist Mate First Class. He was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Terre Haute to Joseph Paul Mankin and Hyla Lakin Mankin. Survivors include his wife, Jayne Mankin of Terre Haute; two sons, Stephen W. Mankin and his wife, Virginia of Terre Haute and Michael J. Mankin and his wife, Vicki of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Elaine Mankin of Charleston, S.C., and Diane Dill and her husband, Floyd of Terre Haute; and seven grandchildren, Patrick Boyle, Matt Trummel, Scott Trummel, Ryan Trummel, Alyssa Mankin, Katy Mankin and Russ Williamson. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., and again Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in First Baptist Church, 4701 Poplar St., from 10 a.m. until services. Services are noon Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bernie Jackson officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dr. Mankin's memory to Gideons International, P.O. Box 2603, Terre Haute, IN 47802; or, to Light House Mission, 1450 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47807.

Patricia L. O'Connell

Patricia L. O'Connell, 73, of Terre Haute died at 1:47 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in her brother's residence near Lewis. She was an executive secretary with Eastern Express, from which she retired after 23 years of service. She was born Sept. 15, 1930, in Terre Haute to William Jennings O'Connell and Maude T. Wortman O'Connell. Survivors include one sister, Eileen McDaid and her husband Richard of Wooster, Ohio; one brother, William J. O'Connell of Lewis; 12 nieces and nephews, Patricia Lenne of Plymouth, Carol, Jim, Bill and Michael McDaid, all of Wooster, Brian O'Connell, Jennifer Latham, Eileen Downing, Shawn O'Connell, Riley O'Connell and Bridgett O'Connell, all of Terre Haute, and Staff Sgt. Patrick O'Connell serving in Germany; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Rita Christy. She graduated from Wiley High School and had attended Indiana State University. She was an enthusiastic fisherman, an avid reader and enjoyed nature. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Services are 1 p.m. Friday, in the chapel at Calvary cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Kaley officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. There is no visitation. DeBaun Springhill Chapel assisted with arrangements. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Hospice, 3900 S. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47802.

Cheryl L. Ogborn

Cheryl L. Ogborn, 51, of Batesville, Ark., and formerly of Vigo County, died Jan. 29, 2004, in Greenup, Ill., the result of an automobile accident. She was born April 2, 1952, in Vigo County to Emil Endress and Annabelle Endress. Survivors include one son, Jimmy Ogborn; three brothers, Emil Ogborn, Bill Francis and Bob Francis; one sister, Pat Perelle; one granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial Services are 5 p.m. Saturday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Donald Endress officiating. Visitation is 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Wilma Eloise Thomas

Wilma Eloise Thomas, 87, of Terre Haute died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was a supervisor for Columbia House. She was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Bellmore to Boyd Collings and Fannie Hadley Collings. Survivors include her husband, Dale Thomas; one son, Monte of Arizona; three daughters, Myla Kay of Rockville, Diane of Terre Haute and Sue of Mooresville; one sister, Marilyn Fowler of Waveland; one brother, Duane Collings of Carmel; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was a member of the DAV, AUG and AARP. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Roselawn Funeral Home. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Anna F. Neal

HYMERA - Anna F. Neal, 63, of Hymera died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was owner/operator of Powell Insurance Co., and was an author. She was born Feb. 20, 1940, in Hymera to William H. Dean and Goldie L. Blevins Dean. Survivors include her husband, Larry L. Neal; one son, Larry D. Neal of Poolesville, Md.; one daughter, Cindy Crosby of Coalmont; five sisters, Ruth Evelyn Wilson of Angola, Norma Lee Sanders of Sullivan, Marjie Ellen Shaw of Terre Haute, Katie Knowles of Hymera and Alice Staley of Clay City; four brothers, Diz Dean and Hugh Dean, both of Hymera, Bill Dean of Fort Branch and Jimmy Dean of Sullivan; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of Hymera First Baptist Church and Baptist Women's Association. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, with the Rev. David Wilson officiating. Burial is in Peavey cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, in the church. Mattox Funeral Homes assisted with arrangements.

Lillie Mae Partain

CLINTON - Lillie Mae Partain, 86, of Clinton died at 11:59 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was a retired inspector for CBS in Terre Haute. She was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Homespark, Mo., to Louis McConnell and Lillie Plummer-McConnell. Survivors include two daughters, Katheryn Foster of Niles, Mich., and Ruby Mohr of Walkerton; one son, George Dettweiler of Hobart; seven grandchildren; one sister, Jacqueline Mautino of Clinton; two brothers, John Newkirk of Terre Haute and Tom McConnell of Sebring, Fla.; two special nieces and their husbands, Nancy and Quentin Ave of Clinton and Janice and Jeff Vietti of Rockville; and other nieces and nephews. Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday in Karanovich Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mindy Huffman officiating. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Friday.

Rev. James David Swalls

HYMERA - The Rev. James David Swalls, 69, of Hymera died at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was retired from Texas Gas LLC. He was born July 18, 1934, in Terre Haute to Herman Swalls and Vernice Hawkins Swalls. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Ginger Alexander Swalls; four sons, Randal and his wife, Beth, Jimbo and his wife, Nancy and David "Baby" and his wife, Carissa, all of Hymera and Jeffrey and his wife, Cheri of Bedford; one daughter, Vikki Renee Bunch and her husband, Kirk of Elnora; two sisters, Edith Kearschner of Riley and Rachel Butler of Isabelle, Ill.; special friends, Cathy Jones and Eddie Bose; three brothers, Daniel of Riley, Stephen and Carl, both of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews; four grandsons, Jeremy, Darrin, James and Jacob; seven granddaughters, Bethany, Christina, Chelsea, Tabitha, MaKenzie, Tory and Ashley; and great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Jeremiah, Dillon and Myra. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Donald Wayne Swalls; two sisters, Norma Jones and Ophelia Lawrence; and one granddaughter, Amanada Lee Swalls. He was a member of New Creations Gospel Group, Hymera Ministerial Association, vice president of Greene County Gospel Music Association, and honorary member of Hymera Ruritan, a volunteer at Shakamak Good Samaritan Nursing Home and the organizer of Community Services of Hymera. Dave had a true compassion for life, love and forgiveness. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Hymera Independent Community Church, of which he was currently the pastor, with the Rev. John Katchum officiating. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Hymera Independent Community Church. Mattox Funeral Homes assisted with arrangements.
