Russell S. "Rusty" Butler

Russell Stephen "Rusty" Butler, 73, Sharpsville, died at 3:46 P.M. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 10, 1930, in Converse, Indiana, to Harry Dale & Edna Emma (Mumaw) Butler and lived in Kokomo from 1932 -1957. On May 17, 1951, he married Aleta May Stoner and she survives.

He worked as a tinsmith from 1957 until retiring in 1987; most of that time with Graves Sheetmetal in Kokomo. He also worked 17 years as a groundskeeper at the Tipton Golf Course.

Rusty attended and was baptized at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Kokomo in 1963, along with his wife and six children. He was recently baptized by submersion at First Assembly of God in Tipton. He formerly belonged to the Elks, Moose, American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and camping.

From 1948-1952 Rusty served in the U.S. Army, ranking as Staff Sergeant. He was with the 27th Infantry Regiment, "The Wolfhounds", in the 25th Division. His tour of duty took him to Korea in 1951 where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during combat.

Survivors besides his wife Aleta include 6 children, Col. Bradley (Nome) Butler, USAF, Tampa, Florida, Capt. Stephen (Sharon) Butler, USN, Laurel, Maryland, Michael (Joanna) Butler, Cicero, Indiana, Cynthia (Harry) McLay, Tipton, Matthew (Debbie) Butler, Tipton, and Kelly (Raymond) Denham, Tipton.

Rusty is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Ryan (Sarah) Denham, Rory Denham, Kirtis Denham, Kraigh Denham, Lindsay McLay, Ashley McLay, Tawny McLay, Michelle Butler, Melissa Butler, Nicole Butler, Jessica Butler, Abra Butler, Rachel Butler, and Rusty Butler; 2 step-grandchildren, Brandon White and Dusti Netherton; 1 great-granddaughter, Olivia Denham; 1 step-great-grandson, Blaine White; two sisters, Mary (Cecil) Mason, Walton, Indiana, and Nancy (Richard) Conwell, Kokomo; 3 step-brothers, Donald “Duck” Duncan, Kokomo, William “Bill” Duncan, Pennsylvania, and Larry Duncan, Kokomo; 2 step-sisters, Betty Smith and Cheryl Duncan, both of Kokomo.

His funeral will be Saturday, June 19, at 3:00 P.M. at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, 216 W. Jefferson, Tipton, with Rev. Mark Sluka presiding. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Rita Ann Cage

Rita Ann Cage, 83, 321 S. East Street, Tipton, died at 4:50 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2005, at her residence which had been her family home for the last 40 years. She was born December 30, 1921, in Tipton to Edward & Josephine (Cook) Ertel. On May 1, 1946, she married Robert Dale Cage and he died December 27, 1996.

She was a registered nurse and worked at Tipton County Memorial Hospital for 15 years, retiring in 1985.

Rita was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a member of the Rosary Society. She graduated from Tipton High School in 1939 and from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Lafayette in 1944. She volunteered with the "Meals on Wheels" program in Tipton.

She is survived by six children, Robert Douglas Cage and his wife Janene, Greenwood, Jerome Edward Cage and his wife Melanie, Conroe, Texas, Joseph William Cage and his wife Mary, Arcadia, Richard David Cage and his wife Pam, Tipton, Geraldine Marie Mahaney and her husband Joe, Tipton, and Mary Josephine Phifer and her husband Dan, Tipton. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Mark Ertel, Indianapolis, Jim Ertel, Chesterton, Indiana, Betty Moore, Tipton, and Joan Stodgell, Lafayette.

Rita has 20 grandchildren, Christi, Ryan, Brendan Cage and Evan Preston ; Stephen and Brittany Cage; Daniel, Adam, Kimberly, April and Sarah Cage; Erika, Joshua, Rachel and Hannah Mahaney; Wesley Beaty, Ashlee and Emylee Cage; and Lauren and Daniel Phifer. She has two great-grandchildren, Jayvin Lyons and Sophie Cage.

Her funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 10, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 340 Mill Street, Tipton, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman presiding. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with a rosary service at 7:45 p.m.

Joanne M. Cardwell

Joanne M. Cardwell, 77, Atlanta, died at 4:15 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009 at Regency Place in Indianapolis. She was born in Noblesville on June 3, 1931 to Shirley E. and Violace L. (Stern) Whisman. She married Everett F. Cardwell on June 27, 1954, and he preceded her in death on May 21, 1990.

Joanne grew up outside Cicero and later farmed south of Tipton. She was a bookkeeper and a member of Cicero Christian Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Carolyn J. Knapp, Cicero and Linda L. Ary, Athens, Illinois; two grandchildren, Karen Lee Heffelmire and husband Ben, and Michael S. Cardwell and wife Michelle; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and one daughter-in-law, Lana Cardwell of Atlanta.. She was preceded in death by her son, Edwin Lee Cardwell, a twin sister, Jeanne M. Endicott and a brother, Robert K. Whisman.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 at the Cicero Christian Church in Cicero with Rev. Tim Lueking presiding. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Tipton. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home and on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church.

Sister Celine Clark

Sister Celine Clark died at the age of 98 on October 8, 2011, one month before her 99th Birthday. Sister Celine was a long time resident of Camilla Hall at St. Joseph Center in Tipton, Indiana. For many years she received wonderful care from the sisters and staff and responded with a loving and welcoming spirit.

Mabel Anna Clark was born to Bertha (Funderburg) Clark and Herman Clark on November 23, 1912 in Huntington, Indiana. Surviving are a brother, Paul (Marilyn) Clark of Huntington, Indiana and a sister, Mary Louise Kreiger of Loveland, Colorado as well as several nieces and nephews and the members of the Congregation of St. Joseph. Siblings Helen Semple and Ruth Sesline both preceded her in death.

At the age of nineteen, Mabel entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in Tipton on October 7, 1931 and was given the name, Sister Mary Celine. Her final profession of vows was made on July 2 in 1937. After attending Normal School and receiving a life license in teaching Sister Celine accepted her first teaching assignment at St. Matthew’s School in South Bend, Indiana in 1940 and continued in the field of education, also teaching in the parochial schools of Wabash, Kokomo and Tipton, until she was appointed as the Director of Novices for the Sisters in Tipton in 1949. Sister Celine served her community in that capacity for fifteen years until she was elected to the General Council in 1964. Six years later, 1970, she moved to Bend, Oregon, where she ministered in the Pastoral Care Department at St. Charles Medical Center, a hospital then sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph. When she returned to Indiana in 1974, Sr. Celine served as a pastoral visitor at Mercy Hospital in Elwood, Indiana.

During the many years of her illness her days were given to reading, praying and greeting visitors with an inviting smile and words of gratitude. She could be found with a book in hand, eagerly reading and, until the past few years, tried to keep abreast of current events. Sister Celine was a woman who offered her whole heart in prayer and faithfulness. Many within the Congregation are grateful for her prayerful presence in their lives during their years of formation as Sisters and beyond. Her spirit, which radiated a presence of peace and gentle welcome, will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Visitation is scheduled at St. Joseph Center Chapel in Tipton, Indiana for Tuesday, October 11, beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday morning, October 12, preceding the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., at which Father Patrick K. Hosey will preside. Burial will be in the Cemetery at St. Joseph Center following the Mass. May Sister Celine now rest in Christ’s eternal peace.

Christine Coffey

Christine Coffey, 91, 122 Second Street, Tipton, died early Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at her residence. She was born August 28, 1913, in Randolph County, Indiana, to Howard D. & Caroline (Martin) Thomas. On January 20, 1940, she married Arthur Coffey and he died January 27, 1995.

She was a housewife and a member of West Street Christian Church and Phi Beta Psi Sorority. Christine is survived by one sister, B. Cathleen Bretschneider, Hampton, Virginia. One brother, Robert R. Thomas, is deceased.

Her funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Erin Iobst presiding and burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Floyd E. Collins

Former Tipton resident Floyd E. Collins, 88, Port Charlotte, Florida, died at 3:32 A.M. Monday, September 20, 2004, at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. He was born September 25, 1915, in Menlo, Iowa, to Truman Hardy & Bealah Ferne (Stevenson) Collins. On August 21, 1937, he married Lorraine Mooney and she survives.

He worked for 46 years for Pioneer Hi-Bred Seed Company, serving as the President of Eastern Division from 1975 until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Kemp United Methodist Church in Tipton, First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda, Florida, Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Punta Gorda Isles Yacht Club, and Punta Gorda Country Club. Floyd was on the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission under Governor Otis Bowen, Board Member of Tipton County Memorial Hospital, a founder of the Tipton County Foundation, Sagamore of the Wabash, and served as a Tipton City Councilman.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen Hardy & Lynn (Powell) Collins, Tipton, Thomas Floyd & Victoria (Senen) Collins, Las Vegas, Nevada; one daughter and son-in-law, Janice Lee & James Allen Fambrough, Dahlonega, Georgia; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald Truman & Dee (Philabaum) Collins, Green Valley, Arizona.

Floyd is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Corbin Collins & wife Tracy, Christopher Collins, M.J. Collins, Patrick Collins, Stephanie (Collins) Quigley & husband Matt, Jamie Fambrough, and Jonathan Fambrough & wife Jessie; and 4 great-grandchildren, Jonathan D. Fambrough, Russell W. Fambrough, Jacob I. Fambrough, and Lucy June Quigley.

His funeral will be Thursday, September 23, at 11:00 A.M. at Kemp United Methodist Church, 228 N. Main Street, Tipton, with Rev. Mark Ingle presiding. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be Thursday morning from 9:00-11:00 A.M. at the church prior to the service.

Robert D. Cox

Robert D. Cox, 84, 108 Nansue Drive, Tipton, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at 1:38 A.M. at Riverview Hospital, Noblesville. He was born August 28, 1919, in Hobbs, Indiana, to Lloyd L. & Mollie (Ryan) Cox. On June 28, 1951, he married Frances Frantz and she died January 31, 2002.

Bob and his brother Jim were the owners of Tebco Fertilizer and Farmers Oil & Tire Company until selling them in 1977. He worked for the Indiana State Chemists Office until retiring in 1990. Bob was a graduate of the Indiana University School of Business in 1943.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Tipton, Elks, Sigma Nu Fraternity, I.U. Alumni Association, Columbia Club of Indianapolis, Culver Parents' Association, National Rifle Association, and Knights of Columbus. He served on the Tipton School Board, was in the National Guard and the American Legion.

Bob was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1944-1946 and received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, European Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Honorable Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Belgian Fourragere Medal, Army Occupation of Germany Clasp, and French Liberation Accommodation.

He is survived by three sons and three daughters, Robert David Cox, Snowmass, Colorado, Mary Cox Watson, Wichita, Kansas, James Frederick Cox, Calabasas, California, Cathy Cox Schade van Westrum, Carmel, Indiana, Thomas Andrew Cox, Frankfort, Indiana, Anna Cox Spitznogle, Fishers, Indiana; 10 grandchildren, Anna, Benjamin, Sarah and James Watson, Melissa, Jacob and Andrew Schade van Westrum, Christina Cox, and Molly and John Spitznogle. One brother, James F. Cox, is deceased.

His funeral will be Wednesday, March 17, at 10:00 A.M. at the St. Joseph Center, 1440 W. Division Road, Tipton, with the Rev. Kenneth T. Raczek presiding. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, 216 W. Jefferson Street, Tipton, with a wake service at 7:00 P.M.

Rosemary Crouch

Rosemary Crouch, 81, 1606 N. 250 W., Tipton, died at 12:35 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2004, at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. She was born March 25, 1923, in Madison Township of Tipton County to Herbert & Mary (Zittinger) Warner. On June 6, 1942, she married Max E. Crouch and he survives.

She was a licensed practical nurse and the former Tipton County Nurse. She served as Cicero Township Assessor for 8 years. Rosemary was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Rosary Society; Tipton County Historical Society, Republican Women, and local & district women's leader for Farm Bureau. She was also on the Pork Festival Board and served breakfast at the Pork Festival for 25 years. She was honored as the Grand Marshall during the Pork Festival's 25th year.

Rosemary is survived by her husband Max of Tipton, 7 sons - James Crouch, Arcadia, Robert Crouch, Bunker Hill, George Crouch, Tipton, Charles Crouch, Bloomfield, Indiana, Jeffrey Crouch, Tipton, Patrick Crouch, Bedford, Indiana, and Douglas Crouch, Tipton; 2 daughters - Linda Enright, Tipton and Katherine Bennett, Tipton; one sister, Annabell Kemper, Mission, Texas; 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. One sister, Genevieve Warner, and one brother, George Warner, are deceased.

Her funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 1, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Tipton, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman presiding and cremation to follow. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Tipton, at a later date. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, Tipton, with a Wake service at 6:00 p.m.

Henry H. Dane

Henry H. Dane, 80, Tipton, died at 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2004, at Miller's Merry Manor in Tipton. He was born on December 22, 1923 in Tipton County to Frank V. and Frances (Koors) Dane. He married Betty Lou (Horton) on November 13, 1946. She preceded him in death on June 3, 1994.

Henry worked in the maintenance department at FMC until its closing and was a lifelong farmer in Tipton County. He belonged to St. Johns Catholic Church, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Moose lodge and was a former member of the F.O.P.

He is survived by one son, Jim Dane and his wife Ann of Tipton; 3 granddaughters, Heather Dane of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Jennifer Dane of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Kristin Dane of Lafayette, Indiana. He has 5 surviving sisters, Mary Griffin of Tipton; Christine Ehman of Kokomo; Rosina Simms of California; Betty Thornton of Tipton; and Carolyn Biddle of Tipton.

He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters; Joe, Bernard and Clem Dane and Margaret Brown and Frances Shawhan.

Funeral services will be on Friday November 12, 2004 at 10:00am at St. John's Catholic Church in Tipton with the Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday November 11 from 4-8pm at Young-Nichols Funeral Home where the Rosary will be said at 4:00pm and a Wake service will be held at 7:00pm.

LaVonna Dashiell

LaVonna Dashiell, 61, 5295 S. 50 W., Atlanta, died at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at her residence. She was born May 2, 1943, in Lincoln, Illinois, to Everett O. & Evelyn (Leinweber) Walker and they survive. In November 1998, she married James R. Dashiell, M.D. and he survives.

She was a registered nurse and graduated from the Springfield (Illinois) Memorial Hospital nursing program. She was an active member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Tipton, especially the Garden Club, LWML and Human Care Committees, as well as the Hand Bell Choir.

LaVonna loved reading, gardening, travel, laughing, friends and especially her 8 grandchildren. Her favorite place was any warm, sunny beach and she also loved water skiing.

Survivors besides her husband James of Atlanta and parents Everett & Evelyn Walker of Armington, Illinois, include two sons, Derek Arrowood and his wife Kim, Lafayette, Indiana, and Brain Arrowood and his wife Michelle, Greenfield, Indiana; one step-daughter, Julie Horoho and her husband Tim, Carmel, and one step-son, Marc Dashiell and his wife Stacy, Avon, Indiana; two brothers, Keith Walker and his wife Fran, Armington, Illinois, and Weldon Walker and his wife Vicki, McLean, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Nate, Paige, Kyle, Ellie & Haley Arrowood, Sydni & Dylan Horoho, and Olivia Dashiell.

A memorial service for LaVonna will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1385 S. Main Street, Tipton, with Pastor Kurt Gremel officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday at the church. Young-Nichols Funeral Home, Tipton, is in charge of the arrangements.
