Estella Birchler

MARIAH HILL — Estella A. Birchler, 88, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Northwood Good Samaritan in Jasper.

Surviving are six daughters, Vita Kippenbrock of Ferdinand, Carole Leibering of Lamar, Della Fehribach and Judy and Patricia Birchler, all of Jasper, Charlene Boutwell of Evansville; four sons, Ronald of Mooresville, Larry of Cleveland, Richard of Grandview and William of Princeton; a sister, Mildred Vaal of St. Meinrad; 33 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Severin, in 1999 and two daughters, Anne and Donna Birchler.

Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Friday at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Dennis Pfister

JASPER — Dennis F. Pfister, 75, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital from complications from diabetes and a heart condition.

He was president of Pfister Industries. He retired as president of United Manufacturing Company in Jasper, Ind.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and American Legion Post 147 and a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, Lelia (Jerger); a daughter, Mary Jane Pfister of Evansville; two sons, Joe of Carmel and Jim of Jasper; a sister, Rose Caroline Mehringer of Jasper; three brothers, Ambrose, Leon and Edward, all of Jasper; and three grandchildren, Nicholas, Kenwyn and Kendall Pfister.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with entombment in Fairview cemetery mausoleum.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel, with prayer vigil at 3 p.m.

John Schulte

JASPER — John M. Schulte, 69, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at St. Charles Health Campus of cancer.

He worked at Jasper Coca-Cola Co.

He was a Korean War Army veteran and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and American Legion Post 147.

Surviving are his wife, Irma (Fleck Schnaus); a daughter, Dickie “Sandy” Schitter; two stepdaughters, Deb Hardin of Jasper and Angie Krohn of Ireland; a stepson, Mark Schnaus; five sisters, Diane Phillips of Loogootee, Mary Lou and Marlene Schmitt, both of Ireland, Frances Ackerman of Jasper and Susie Sander of Jasper; a brother, Charlie of Jasper; two grandsons and five stepgrandchildren.

His first wife Phyllis (Luker) died in 1990.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph church with burial in Fairview cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 147.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel.

Betty Atkins

BOONVILLE — Betty L. Atkins, 77, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at home of scleroderma. She was co-owner of Roth’s Department Store from 1971 to 1982.

She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and Gamma Iota chapter of Tri Kappa and a bridge player.

Surviving are a daughter, Martha Carrie Walsh of Paducah, Ky.; two sons, Donald E. of Boonville and John B. of Richland, Wash.; two sisters, Clara Plumb of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Mary Tudor of Hawaii; a brother, Robert Birkhead of Doniphan, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Andrew, Alan, Benjamin and Eban Atkins and Kate and Emily Walsh.

A daughter, Lucy Kim Atkins, died in 1981.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bradley’s Colonial Chapel, with burial in Maple Grove cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Scleroderma Foundation or American Diabetic Association.

Bernice Baker

WASHINGTON — Bernice Baker, 90, died Tuesday, March 27. 2001, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

She retired from General Motors.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a 1931 graduate of Epsom High School.

Surviving is her husband, Rome Baker of Bedford.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Gill Chapel, with entombment in Sugarland Memory Gardens mausoleum.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday.

Donald Dittmer

HUNTINGBURG — Donald L. Dittmer, 68, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at his home of cancer.

He retired from St Joseph Hospital and Huntingburg Convalescent Center as a maintenance man.

He was a Korean War Navy veteran and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2366.

Surviving are his wife, Lou Ellen (Borman); three daughters, Rene’ Spivey of Evansville, Robin Vaal of Ferdinand and Donatta Jones of Huntingburg; one son, Dennis of St. Henry; two sisters, Evelyn Kuebler of Jasper and Doris Smith of Dale; two brothers, Gerald and Allen, both of Wilmington, N.C.; and ten grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Friday at St. Mary in Huntingburg, with burial in St. Mary cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 2366.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Nass and Son Funeral Home with rosary services at 6 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess St. Joseph Hospice.

Charles Johnson

CHANDLER — Charles A. Johnson, 61, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at St. Mary’s Warrick of heart problems.

He retired from the Marine Corps as a master sergeant after 20 years.

He was a member of the Fleet Marine Reserve Association.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Patricia; three daughters, Deborah Feagley and Ramona J. Lewis, both of Newburgh, and Patricia Bishop of Steamboat Springs Colo.; a son, James R. of Evansville; his mother Violet Hall of Jasper; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Services and visitation were private. Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel handled the arrangements.

Alma Martin

BOONVILLE — Alma Josephine Houchin Martin, 89, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at St. Mary’s Warrick. She retired from Embassy Men’s Apparel in 1973.

She was a member of Main Street General Baptist Church and a quilter.

Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Bruner of Boonville; two sons, Bud of Boonville and Herb of Emporia, Kan.; two stepsons, Cecil Houchin of Evansville and Ollie Houchin of Olney, Ill.; a sister, Ruth Chesser of Petersburg, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Jon, Shawn and Heidi Bruner, Luana Wilhelmus, Lisa Dennis, Steve and Patrick Houchin and Heather Schuette; five stepgrandchildren, Nick and Bob Houchin, Kathy Westerman, Julie Thornton and Lorie Leeper; 10 great-grandchildren; and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Manford Houchin in 1962 and Shirley Martin in 1979.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Koehler Funeral Home Boonville Chapel, with burial in Maple Grove cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Main Street General Baptist Church.

Irvin Abroms

OAKLAND CITY — Irvin Abroms, 86, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He formerly operated Peal’s Department Store and Peal’s Men’s Store.

He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Anshei Sfard Synagogue in Louisville, Ky., and a charter member of Oakland City Country Club.

Surviving are a sister, Sylvia Lee Rosen of Coronado, Calif.; and a niece and nephew.

Services are pending at Herman Meyers & Son Funeral Home in Louisville.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home.

Eva Martin

Eva J. Martin, 81, of Evansville, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Parkview Care Center.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Evansville and Oak Grove (Ind.) Cumberland Presbyterian Church and attended Ladies Day. She was a seamstress and a quilter.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy Davis of Evansville; two sisters, Alberta Fuller of Blackford, Ky., and Juanita McDowell of Clay, Ky.; a brother, Clifton Cowen of Calvert City, Ky.; and three grandsons, Jerry, Jason and Jeff Davis.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel, the Rev. Larry Schauberger officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess/Ohio Valley Hospice Care or Trinity Baptist Church.

Robert Woodward Jr.

Robert G. Woodward Jr., 32, of Evansville, died Saturday in Webster County, Ky., in a plane crash.

He was president of Woodward Commercial Reality, Woodward Development Corp. and the Woodward Construction Co.

He attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., and was a graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in finance and real estate. He was a member of St. Benedict Cathedral, president of St. Benedict parish council finance committee and on the steering committee of the current Capital Campaign at St. Benedict.

Surviving are his wife, Gayla; three sons, Gregory, Hank and Eli, all at home; his parents, Robert Sr. and Betty Woodward of Evansville; two half sisters, Pam Ramsey of Henderson, Ky., and Kim Moore of Miami; his grandmother, Edna Woodward; and nieces.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Benedict Cathedral, the Rev. Gregory Chamberlin officiating, with entombment in St. Joseph cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, with a memorial service at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Benedict Cathedral to serve the Capital Campaign.
