Walter ‘Bud’ Schindler, 85
Retired Indiana State Police detective and former Bluffton insurance agent, Walter “Bud” Schindler, 85, of Delaware, Ohio, died at 11:52 a.m. Thursday at Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware.
Mr. Schindler was a former resident of Berne and served from 1942 to 1966 as a state trooper and subsequently as a state police detective. After retirement from the law enforcement agency, he became engaged as an insurance representative with the Business Men’s Assurance office in Bluffton. He was a member of the First Missionary Church at Berne.
He was born in Adams County Dec. 13, 1915 to Amos and Sarah Winteregg Schindler. His wife, Geraldine “Gerri, ” to whom he was married
on Nov. 23, 1938, died in 1995.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Don (Anita) Dyck of Delaware, Ohio, and Mrs. Steve (Nan) Habegger of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Edith Crumpton of Ridgeway, S.C.; a brother, Clarence Schindler of Statesville, N.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Two brothers and three sisters are deceased.
Services at 2 p.m. Sunday will be at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne with Rev. Robert Dye officiating. Burial will be in MRE cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. and Sunday for one hour prior to services. Memorials to Miracle Hill Ministries in Greenville, S.C.

Ruth Hoover Finney, 98
A retired Ossian teacher, Ruth Hoover Finney, 98, died Sunday at Golden Years of Fort Wayne.
She taught for 25 years in the Ossian Elementary School, retiring in 1968.
She was a member of the Emerald Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and the Sargasso in Ossian and a Red Cross volunteer in Wells County for 15 years.
She was born in Milltown March 27, 1902 to Charles Albert and Bessie Holland Hostetter. A first marriage was to Nelia Hoover, who died in 1935; her second marriage was to Alfred Finney, who died in 1973.
Surviving are a son, David Hoover of New Albany; two daughters, Patricia Sheets and Bessie Bea Schannen, both of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Elzey & Haggard Funeral Home in Ossian, where calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday for one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Oak Lawn cemetery at Ossian.

Edith Marie Pace, 61, a certified food services supervisor, and a resident of 1304 West Washington St., died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Bluffton Regional Medical Center of congestive heart failure. She had been in ill health the past four years.
Mrs. Pace, a 1957 graduate of Bluffton High School, completed a one-year course at Ivy Tech to become a certified food services supervisor.
She worked at the former Davis Nursing Home on Clark Ave. in Bluffton for 18 1/2 years, retiring in 1990. In addition to her food services responsibilities there, she was a Qualified Medical Assistant (QMA) and worked short periods of time at Markle Health Care and at a Huntington nursing home.
She was born in Whitley County Sept. 21, 1939 to Robert S. and I. Helen Fudge Davis.
Surviving are a son, Rolland Dean Jines of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Mrs. Tina Marie Miller of Poneto; a brother, Robert Davis of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Beth Music of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Irene Sue Goodman of Parker City; and four grandchildren. A sister, Margaret Davis, died in 1990.
Calling hours at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The body will be cremated after calling hours and interment will be in Mossburg cemetery at Liberty Center.
A memorial service will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials to the Diabetes Association or to the Heart Association.

Frederic E. Divelbiss, 88
Frederic E. Divelbiss, 88, formerly of Huntington, died at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Memorial Home at Warren.
He was a tool and die maker for General Electric for 31 years retiring in 1974.
Mr. Divelbiss was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntington for more than 60 years and 1932 graduate of Markle High School. He was a member also of Amity Masonic Lodge 483 and the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite and served in the DeMolay for 20 years at local and state levels. He was born in Huntington County July 29, 1912 to Harry and Elsie Elick Divelbiss. His marriage at Markle on Nov. 2, 1934 was to Olive J. Pence, who died Oct. 15, 1985.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald E. of Leo and Steven F. of Huntington; a sister, Mrs. George (Leah) Gearhart of Fort Wayne; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Interment will be in the Gardens of Memory cemetery in Huntington County. Visitation hours at the funeral home are today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. today. Memorials to the donor’s choice.

Nancy J. Heffelmire, 77
Mother of Lewis Heffelmire of Bluffton, Nancy J. Heffelmire, 77, of Tipton, died at 8:40 p.m. Saturday at Miller’s Marry Manor in Tipton.
She was a registered nurse and had worked at Tipton County Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo, Caylor-Nickel Clinic in Bluffton, and Jay County Memorial Hospital in Portland before retiring in 1984.
She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church at Tipton.
She was born at Kokomo Aug. 31, 1923 to George Dewey and Fannie Thomas Beatty. Her marriage on March 27, 1948 was to Raymond H. Heffelmire, who died March 2, 2001.
Surviving, in addition to the son in Bluffton, are a daughter, Sarah Heffelmire of Anderson; another son, Dan Heffelmire of Pleasant Plains, Ill; two brothers, Richard Beatty of Auburn and Charles Beatty of Gainesville, Fla; two sisters, Helen Hiat of Richardson, Texas, and Mary Rose Butterfield of Plano, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition, a daughter, Carolyn, died in 1995 and Nancy and Raymond raised her daughter, Dawn Tillet, who now resides in Jacksonville, Fla. A brother also is deceased.
Services at 10 a.m. Wednesday will be at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Tipton with Rev. Kurt Gremel officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery at Tipton. Bernis Elzey, 91, of Berne, died Sunday at Adams County Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
She was born in Saybrook, Ill., Nov. 12, 1909 to Fred and Edith Crawford Blum. Her marriage was to Gerald Elzey, who died in 1981.
Surviving are a son, Jan, Elzey of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Jill Elzey of Berne; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A brother and sister are deceased.
Services at Trinity United Methodist Church will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Don Wilks officiating. Burial will be in MRE cemetery at Berne.
Visitation hours at the Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne will be Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday at the church for one hour prior to services. Memorials to the church.

Lois E. Bedford, 67
Lois E. Bedford, 67, of Linn Grove, died at 8:35 a.m. Sunday at her residence.
She worked at Dunbar Furniture in Berne for several years, served as a van driver for the Christian Mission Fellowship School and was a volunteer at the Harvest Food Bank in Fort Wayne.
In addition, she engaged in racing stock cars in Florida.
She was born in Detroit, Mich., Dec. 29, 1933 to Harold T. and Elinor M. McCammon Beattie. Her mother survives and resides in Berne.
Other survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Terry (Dawn) Wanner and Mrs. Fred (Janice) Smith, both of Geneva, Mrs. Dan (Laura) Hockin of Berne and Ms. Joann Bedford Thornton of Estill Spring, Tenn.; a brother, Larry Beattie of Flacklick, Ky.; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the West Missionary Church in Berne with Minister Maynard Nisly officiating. Burial will be in Studebaker cemetery at Geneva.
Visitation hours at Downing Funeral Home in Geneva will be Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. and at the church Wednesday for one hour prior to services.

Robert M. Mills, 82
A retired dairy farmer and native of Wells County, Robert M. Mills, 82, died March 23 at Venice, Fla.
He was in management of Greenview and Fairways of Capri Isles Condominums at Venice. He was a featured Dairy Herd Improvement Award winner by Prairie Farmer magazine, secretary and board member of the former Allen Dairy and a seven-gallon blood donor.
He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at Venice. He was born in Wells County Feb. 13, 1919.
Surviving are three daughters, Wilma Johannson of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mary Lou Krick of Fort Wayne and Jeanette Humphries of Kenton, Ohio; three sons, R. Michael of Harrisburg, Pa., Fred of Venice and John of Bluffton; a brother, Wayne S. of Bluffton; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. The body is to cremated.
Services are to be announced for a future date.

Cleo S. Harrold, 74
Cleo S. Harrold, 74, of Montpelier, who had served in a number of law enforcement positions, died at 1:40 p.m. Friday at his home.
He served as police officer and as chief of police at Montpelier and had been fire chief. He also served a time as town marshal at Eaton and as a Delaware County deputy sheriff.
Mr. Harrold was director of civil defense for Blackford County and served two terms as treasurer of the Indiana Civil Defense. In 1996, he was named Volunteer of the Year for the City of Montpelier. He attended the First Baptist Church at Montpelier.
He was born in Roll Oct. 11, 1926, the son of Sherman and Victoria Drabenstott Harrold. His marriage in Hartford City on Aug. 23, 1944 was to Betty Roberts, who survives. He was a 1944 graduate of Chester Center High School.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, David and Donnie, both of Montpelier, and Michael of Augusta, Ga.; three daughters, Mrs. William (Connie) Wyatt of Warren, Candy Irelan of Montpelier and Mrs. Todd (Betty) Shady of Bluffton; 24 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
Two sons, Daniel and Dennis; a daughter, Sandra Harrold; two brothers; a sister; and three great-grandchildren are deceased.
Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Waters Funeral Home in Hartford City with Rev. Frank Rodgers officiating. Burial will be in Brookside cemetery at Montpelier.
Calling hours at the funeral home are today from 2 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday after 9 a.m.
Memorials to the Montpelier Fire Department or to the Blackford County Civil Defense/EMA.

James P. Johnson, 40
James P. Johnson, 40, who resided at 1028 West South St., died suddenly at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
He was an employee in the maintenance department at Sterling Casting for 22 years.
He was born in Bluffton July 9, 1960 to James and Patty Miller Johnson, both of whom survive. His marriage at Bluffton on Dec. 9, 1983 was to Mary Jo Arnold, who survives also.
Other survivors are a daughter, Adia Johnson, and a son, Chad Johnson, both of Bluffton; two brothers, Jeffrey L. Johnson of Syracuse, Ind., and Kevin S. Johnson of Uniondale; and three sisters, Cathy Johnson and Rhonda Johnson, both of Bluffton, and Shirley Johnson of Tucson, Ariz.
Services at 10 a.m. Thursday will be at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home with Rev. James Poling officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.
Visitation hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Thursday for one hour prior to services. Memorials to the family.

Dale D. Bird, 68
Father of Douglas D. Bird of Ossian, Dale D. Bird, 68, of Fort Wayne, died Monday at Parkview Hospital.
Born in Paulding, Ohio, he retired from Zollner Corp. after 20 years.
Surviving, in addition to the son at Ossian, are his wife, Norma L.; three other sons, Jerry D. of Saint Joe, and Lester E. and Lynn D., both of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Karen S. Palmer of Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
Services at 11 a.m. Thursday will be at D.O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Rd., Fort Wayne. Burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens.
