Sharon Kay Thompson, 60
Sharon Kay Thompson, 60, of Fort Wayne, a native of Union City, died Saturday, Nov. 30, at her residence in Fort Wayne.
She was a nursery school teacher at Peace Lutheran Church for 25 years and an organist for 10 years at Waynedale United Methodist Church. She founded and directed the Adoration Singers at Waynedale United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Lynn E. of Fort Wayne; a son, Bradley L. of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Sondra Kay Mall of Ossian; her parents, Ralph and Reva Horine of Indianapolis; and three grandchildren. A brother is deceased.
Services at 10 a.m. Thursday will be at Waynedale United Methodist Church, 2501 Church St., Fort Wayne, where calling will be for one hour prior to services.
Visitation also will be at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Ave., Fort Wayne, Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Lisbon cemetery at Union City.
Memorials to Waynedale United Methodist Church’s music fund, to Cancer Services of Allen County, or to Parkview Home Health Care & Hospice.

Albert F. Heiser, 81
Owner and operator of a service station at Poe, Allen County, Albert F. Heiser, 81, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, at his Poe residence.
Mr. Heiser owned the Heiser Service Station in Poe for 35 years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, 50-year member of the Poe Volunteer Fire Department and attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne.
He was born in Fort Wayne Dec. 28, 1920, a son of Marshall and Ethel Phelps Heiser. His marriage at Ossian on May 3, 1942 was to Marguerite Reinhard, who died Nov. 3, 1999.
Surviving are a son, Neal K. Heiser of Fort Wayne, and a sister, Geraldine Hershberger of Fort Wayne.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 6301 Winchester Rd., Fort Wayne, with Rev. Chris Madison officiating. Burial will be in Williamsport cemetery at Poe.
Visitation hours at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home in Ossian will be Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. and at the church Friday for one hour before services. Memorials to the church or to the Poe Volunteer Fire Department.

Josephine Tedford, 94
A former resident of Markle, Josephine Tedford, 94, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the home of a granddaughter in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Tedford was a homemaker and in her younger years in Markle was a chemist for a tomato cannery through the 1940s and 1950s. She also served as a lifeguard at the Markle Pool and as a volunteer at the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren.
She was a member of the Markle United Methodist Church and active in its ladies groups and a member of the Markle Order of Eastern Star Chapter 567, having served as a grand worthy matron.
She was born in Woodland, Ill., Nov. 3, 1908, a daughter of Frederick and Carrie Cavitt West. Her marriage in Baltimore, Md., on June 1, 1942 was to Clare Tedford, who died Jan. 4, 1989.
Surviving are a daughter, Joanne Pequignot of Fort Wayne; a brother, Kenneth West of Metarie, La.; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Services at Myers Funeral Home Markle Chapel will be at 2 p.m. Friday, with visitation hours for two hours prior to the services. Interment will be in Markle cemetery.
Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Garth N. Haines, 78
Garth N. Haines, 78, a native of Wells County, died at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at his residence in Naperville, Ill.
Mr. Haines retired as maintenance supervisor at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. He was employed also by the Indiana Conference North of Evangelical United Brethren Church at Syracuse, where he once resided.
He was an active member of the Community United Methodist Church in Naperville and in the Naperville Heritage Society.
He was born in Wells County Dec. 25, 1923 to Charles and Goldie Nussbaumer Haines. His marriage in 1948 was to Shirley R. Custer, who survives.
Additional survivors are an adopted daughter, Ann Poullard of Navarre, Fla.; a brother, Jesse Haines of Ossian; a sister, Mary De Vries of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandsons. Four brothers are deceased.
Services at 10 a.m. Saturday will be Nine Mile United Methodist Church, 6202 Winters Road, Fort Wayne, where calling will be for one hour prior to services. Rev. Tom Babler will officiate and burial will be in Nine Mile cemetery.
Memorials to the church, to Naperville Heritage Society, to Community United Methodist Church, or to North Central College.
Haggard & Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur is in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Houtz of Ossian died Tuesday evening, Dec. 3, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. Rites are pending at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home, Ossian Chapel.

Laurel K. Mattax, 82
Funeral services for Laurel K. Mattax, 82, former Adams Central School Board member, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Springhill Methodist Church in rural Berne.
Visitation hours at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne will be Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. and at the church Friday for one hour prior to services.
Mr. Mattax died at 3:48 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Besides having served as a member of the Adams Central School Board, Mr. Mattax was retired as former owner of Mattax Electric Co. and from farming.
He was a member of the Springhill Methodist Church, having held several church offices.
He was born in Adams County Nov. 7, 1920, a son of Vance and Coral Myers Mattax. His marriage at Wabash on March 12, 1944 was to Virginia Flueckiger, who survives.
Additional survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Keith (Saundra) Minger, Mrs. Keith (Linda) Keller and Mrs. Tony (Susie) Braun, all of Berne, and Mrs. John (Rita) Carroll of Decatur; a brother, Robert Mattax of Bluffton; a sister, Rowena Hurst of Decatur; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Two brothers and four sisters are deceased.
Rev. Gene Wilson will officiate at services and burial will be in Backesto (Springhill) cemetery in rural Berne.
Memorials to the church or to National Parkinson Foundation.

Alton C. Bittner, 91
A lifetime dairy farmer in Preble Township, Adams County, Alton C. Bittner, 91, of rural Decatur, died at 12:46 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Adams County Memorial Hospital in Decatur. He had been in failing health for the past year.
Mr. Bittner retired from dairy farming in August 2001. He had worked previously also at Decatur Casting Co.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Preble and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving in each church as a Sunday school teacher and holder of various offices.
He was born in Adams County’s Kirkland Township Sept. 1, 1911, a son of Charles H. and Emma Bieberich Bittner. His marriage at Decatur on Aug. 21, 1934 was to Alice Marie Reinhart, who survives.
Other survivors are two sons, Ronald K. and Frank D., both of Decatur; a daughter, Mrs. Robert E. (Faye) Keuneke of Decatur; a brother, Herman Bittner of Decatur; a sister, Leota Jensen of Elmhurst, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. A brother and a great-grandson are deceased.
A prayer service will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. Friday at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, followed at 10 a.m. by a funeral service at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Preble by Rev. Daniel Brege and Rev. Donald Biester. Burial will be in Decatur cemetery.
Visitation hours at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials to the church at Preble or to Wyneken Expansion.

Gerald V. Houtz, 89
Funeral services for Gerald V. Houtz, 89, of Ossian will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral home in Ossian. Burial will be in Oak Lawn cemetery at Ossian.
Visitation hours at the funeral chapel, 120 West Mill St., will be Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.
Mr. Houtz died Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
He had worked at Phelps Dodge, Wayne Metals and G&L Corp. as a machinist, was an avid fisherman and hunter and a member of the Ossian United Methodist Church.
He was born in Wells County July 21, 1913, a son of William Henry and Ida Blanche Sale Houtz.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; a daughter, Sandra Imel of Uniondale; a son, Gerry Houtz of Ossian; a sister, Gladys Fuhrer of Bluffton; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters are deceased.

Anna Lou McMullen, 92
A homemaker who made airplane instrument panels during World War II, Anna Lou McMullen, 92, died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the United Methodist Memorial Home at Warren, where she had been a resident since May 11, 1984.
Mrs. McMullen was a native of Colquist County, Georgia, and had resided in Georgia, Tampa, Miami and Key Largo, the latter her residence just prior to entering the Warren home.
She was born Sept. 10, 1910, a daughter of Benjamin H. and Mecie Ellen Mullis Stripling. Her marriage in Miami on Nov. 9, 1929 was to Alva H. McMullen, who died Nov. 16, 1987.
Surviving are two daughters, Eloise Bryans of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Sonya McMullen of Grand Junction, Colo.; a sister, Pauline Bryan of Sebring, Fla.; a brother, Henry Cecil Stripling of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a future date in Colorado. Burial will be in Springhill cemetery at Warren, Ind.
Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, in Warren is in charge of arrangements.

Earl R. Michel, 93
Earl R. Michel, 93, a lifelong Huntington County farmer, died at 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Heritage of Huntington.
Mr. Michel, who engaged in farming in Lancaster, Warren and Polk Townships, also worked for 20 years at John Reed Tractor in Huntington.
He was a member of St. Peter’s First United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and an elder.
He was born Aug. 19, 1909 in Huntington County, a son of William and Clara Pflieger Michel. His marriage at Huntington on Feb. 26, 1935 was to Pauline K. Meitzler, who died April 23, 1995.
Surviving are a son, Larry D. Michel of Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. William (Linda) Pfister of Munster; a sister, Marjorie Cook of Huntington; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A son, Loyd, two brothers and two sisters are deceased.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel with Pastor Jonathan Heaslet officiating. Interment will be in the St. Peter’s First United Church of Christ cemetery in Huntington.
Visitation hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Nancy M. Crowe, 60
Mother of Chris Crowe of Bluffton, Nancy M. Crowe, 60, of Auburn, died Thursday, Dec. 5, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Crowe was an accounts payable clerk at the Auburn city clerk-treasurer’s office. She was born in Wauseon, Ohio.
Surviving, in addition to the son in Bluffton, are her husband, David A.; her parents, Walter S. and Mary Helf of Auburn; two other sons, Brent of Dover, Ohio, and Timothy of Dallas; a sister, Karen S. Smith of Waterloo; and four grandchildren.
There will be no funeral service or calling hours.
Arrangements are by Thomas Funeral Home in Garrett.
Memorials to Indiana Organ Procurement Organization in Indianapolis.
