Cleo D. Smith
Fort Wayne — 1924-2000

Cleo D. Smith, 75, of Fort Wayne, the first African American to receive an electrical engineering degree from the Indiana Institute of Technology in 1952, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at Lutheran Home.

The Atmore, Ala., native worked at Magnavox as an engineer for 14 years, at ITT as the NASA quality assurance manager for 20 years and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post 148, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, McCulloch Center Men's Club and came to Fort Wayne in 1949.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Mamie; a daughter, Marsha L. Smith of Fort Wayne; a son, Reginald Smith, M.D., of Atlanta; a foster daughter, Annie R. Bediako of Farmington Hills, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, 2313 S. Hanna St. Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ellis Funeral Home, 1021 E. Lewis St. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens.

Memorials are to the African American Museum, 436 E. Douglas Ave., or Zion Lutheran Academy, 2313 S. Hanna St.

Asa E. Little
Harlan — 1908-2000

Asa E. Little, 92, of Harlan, a retired welder, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at Parkview Hospital.

The Steuben County native retired in 1974 from Fruehauf Trucking and was a member of Harlan Church of Christ.

Surviving are a son, Meridith of Pickerington, Ohio; sisters Rosalie Germann and Lillian Clay, both of Fort Wayne; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hockemeyer Funeral Home, 17629 Indiana 37, Harlan, with calling two hours before services. Burial will be at Harlan cemetery.

Memorials are to the church.

Pauline I. Pulver George
Fort Wayne

Pauline I. Pulver George, 71, of Fort Wayne, a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Parkview Hospital.

The Fort Wayne native was a homemaker and had worked as an X-ray technician.

Surviving are sons Gregory L. Shirk of Argos and Scott W. and Brian M. George, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, James R. Pulver of Fort Wayne; sisters Kathryn Rudolph, Genevieve Warner, Betty Arnold and Phyllis Fitch, all of Huntertown; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W., brothers Harry E. and Robert Pulver, and a sister, Helen Brinker.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, 8669 Auburn Road, with calling one hour before services. Calling is also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. vigil service at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 E. Dupont Road. Burial will be at Highland Park cemetery.

Memorials are to the church or Masses.

LeRoy W. McAbee
Fort Wayne — 1915-2000

LeRoy W. McAbee, 84, of Fort Wayne, a World War II Navy veteran, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Parkview Hospital.

The Portland native retired in 1982 from the city of Fort Wayne Parks Department after 20 years of service, had worked for the Bowser Plant for 22 years and was a member of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Joy A. Hansen of Fort Wayne; a son, Larry L. Sr. of Fort Wayne; sisters Amy Dull and Erma Furniss, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, Ronald of Hamilton; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

His wife, Virginia A., preceded him in death.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7215 St. Joe Road, with calling one hour before services. Calling is also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. rosary service. Burial will be at Catholic cemetery.

Memorials are to St. Mary's Soup Kitchen or Masses.

Robert Jones
Fort Wayne — 1923-2000

Robert Jones, 76, of Fort Wayne, a retired factory worker, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at home.

The Marion, Ala., native had retired from International Harvester Co. after 40 years of service and was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Rosetta; a daughter, Leola Jones of Fort Wayne; brothers Willie Sr. and Argolian, both of Fort Wayne; a sister, Annie Bell Johnson of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 2421 Hanna St. Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carmichael Funeral Services, 831 E. Jefferson Blvd. Burial will be at Highland Park cemetery.

Brenda Sue Parsons
Fort Wayne

Brenda Sue Parsons, 35, of Fort Wayne, a native of Fort Wayne, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Parkview Hospital.

Surviving are her father, Elmer Parsons of Fort Wayne; a brother, Steven Parsons of Fort Wayne; and a half brother, Terry Brown of Fort Wayne.

Her mother, Hazel Parsons, preceded her in death.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., with calling from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Concordia Memorial Gardens.

Memorials are to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or United Cerebral Palsy.

Randall D. Smith
Allen County

Randall D. Smith, 46, of the Allen County Spencerville area, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana.

The Fort Wayne native worked for Columbia Street West as a manager for 13 years, for Country Junction in Harlan as a manager, was a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church and had been instrumental in bringing quality music to Fort Wayne.

Surviving are his wife, Sandy L.; a son, Ryan D. Gladieux of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Angi A. Gladieux of Spencerville; his stepmother, Ruth E. Smith of Fort Wayne; brothers Leigh of Fort Wayne and Leslie of Muncie; stepbrothers William Watson of Wichita, Kan., and James Watson of Oswell, Ga.; a sister, Sharon Pierce of Zionsville; and a stepsister, Ruth A. Watson of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 405 W. Wayne St., with calling from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. Calling is also from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens.

Fort Wayne — 1937-2000

Sue K. Love, 62, of Fort Wayne, a cook, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at home.

The Paulding, Ohio, native worked at Crossroads Pantry and was a member of Presbyterian Third United Church of Fort Wayne.

Surviving are daughters Sally Barlow of Ashley and Martha and Linda Gusman and Brenda Love, all of Fort Wayne; sons Raymond of Fort Knox, Ky., and Robert of Fort Wayne; her mother, Alvilda Williams of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a brother, Joseph Williams of West Virginia; sisters Connie Wayman of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Kathie Caughlin of Atlanta; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert D., and a brother, Daniel Williams.

Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at Feller Funeral Home, Waterloo, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Waterloo cemetery.

Naomi E. Smith
Fort Wayne — 1920-2000

Naomi E. Smith, 80, of Fort Wayne, a member of United Brethren Church of Toledo, Ohio, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Riverbend Healthcare Center.

The Huntington native was a homemaker and had also lived in Huntington and Toledo, Ohio.

Surviving are sons Randol of Toledo, Ohio, and Ronald of Roswell, Ga.; daughters Carol Dinius and Karen Payne, both of Huntington, Sonja Tabbert of Toledo, Cheryl Miller of Fort Wayne and Candice Wajer of Clinton Township, Mich.; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald B., on Jan. 31, a son, Hugo, and four brothers.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Deal Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be at Lancaster cemetery, Huntington.

Memorials are to any United Brethren Church.
