ELKHART - Mary L. Croop, 54, of 27501 County Road 26, died at 9 a.m. Thursday in her home after an illness. Survivors include a brother, Donald A. Croop of Goshen. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Calvary Assembly of God Church. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and Sunday in Billings Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church.

Sovilla Gingerich

Sept. 15, 1911 - Sept. 17, 1998

NAPPANEE - - Sovilla Gingerich, 87, of 70657 County Road 3, died Thursday in the home of her son, Alvin, at 70621 County Road 3. Survivors include five daughters, Edna Miller of Milroy, Ind., Fannie Hochstetler of Ligonier, Esther Weaver of Sarasota, Fla., Irene Kuhns of Milford and Mary Yoder of Drakesville, Iowa; and seven sons, Clarence and Alvin, both of Nappanee, Melvin and Gary, both of Syracuse, Delbert of Bogard, Mo., Ervin of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Larry of New Paris. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Alvin Gingerich home, where friends may call after 1 p.m. today and all day Sunday. Thompson - Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

George F. Hattery

May 27, 1919 - Sept. 17, 1998

ROCHESTER - - George Franklin Hattery, 79, of 118 N. Clayton St., died Thursday in his home. Survivors include his wife, Millie H. (Felton); three daughters, Janice M. Agnew of Logansport, Ind., Barbara Skane of Winham, N.H., and Dorothy Donahue of Valparaiso; and two sons, Rodney E. Hattery of Wisconsin and Bruce Hess of Xenia, Ohio. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Foster & Good Funeral Home, where friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday and one hour before services.

Alvena Kruger

Sept. 10, 1902 - Sept. 17, 1998

FRANCESVILLE - Alvena (Stamper) Kruger, 96, of Parkview Haven Retirement Home, died Thursday in the retirement home. Survivors include two daughters, Rosemary Busch and Imogene Hooker, both of Francesville; four sisters, Anna Linsey of Wolcott, Ind., Clara Hintz of Winamac, Minnie Weltzin of Rensselaer and Nellie Piehl of Goshen; and two brothers, Richard and Edward Tiede, both of Francesville. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Querry - Ulbricht Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Eva J. Phillips

Nov. 20, 1905 - Sept. 18, 1998

ELKHART - - Eva J. Phillips, 92, of 333 W. Mishawaka Road, died Friday in Elhart General Hospital. Survivors include a sister, Nondies Tavernier of Leesburg, Fla. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, where friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Mildred N. Rannells

Feb. 24, 1907 - Sept. 17, 1998

KNOX - - Mildred N. Rannells, 91, of Countryside Place Nursing Home, died Thursday in the nursing home. Survivors include a son, Dan of Hamlet. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel, where friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until time of services Sunday.

Cecil F. Stoffer

Feb. 7, 1915 - Sept. 17, 1998

PLYMOUTH - - Cecil F. Stoffer, 83, formerly of 7002 Plymouth - LaPorte Trail, died Thursday at the home of her brother at Crown Point, Ind. Survivors include a sister, Mary E. Kaay of Ocala, Fla.; and two brothers, Von L. of Crown Point and Ward D. of South Bend. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Johnson - Danielson Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m,. Sunday.

Howard E. Windmiller

Dec. 4, 1927 - Sept. 17, 1998

BRISTOL - - Howard E. Windmiller, 70, of 54686 County Road 19, died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday in Elkhart General Hospital, Elkhart. Survivors include his wife, Maxine; two daughters, Cynthia Shue and Patricia Krauzer, both of Elkhart; a son, Marvin E. Long of Micronesia; two sisters, Margaret Helsel of Elkhart and Harriet Windbigler of Chicago; and a brother, Wayne of Elkhart. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Billings Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. A Pilgrim Ceremony will be conducted by the Moose Lodge at 6 p.m.

Janet L. Wittig

Jan. 16, 1951 - Sept. 17, 1998

LEESBURG - - Janet Louise (Schroers) Wittig, 47, of 159 EMS B7 Lane, died at 8:58 p.m. Thursday in her home after an illness. Survivors include her husband, Harry; three sons, Michael of Hammond, Gregory of Indianapolis and David of Evansville, Ind.; three sisters, Carol Miller of Kokomo, Kathleen Sinclair of Valparaiso and Gayle Tristian of Kissimmee, Fla.; and four brothers, Robert Schroers of Ridgecrest, Calif., Michael Schroers of Metamore, Ill., Ronald Schroers of Lake Station, Ind., and David Schroers of Valparaiso. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, where friends may call two hours before services.

WHITE PIGEON - Robert G. Angel Jr., 74, of 17430 Fawn River Road, died Monday in the Fairview Living Center, Centreville. Surviving are his wife, Maxine W.; and four daughters, Kathy Streeter and Rebecca J. Kent, both of White Pigeon, Judy Stickel of Gainesville, Mo., and Lori Dilorenzo of Thompsonville, Mich. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Elkhart Chapel of the Stemm - Lawson - Peterson Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

SOUTH BEND - Byron E. Balsbaugh, 84, of Butternut Road, died Sunday in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Survivors include three sons, David of Noblesville, Ind., Dale of South Bend and Thomas of Dowagiac. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Waymond Brown

Oct. 12, 1941 - Jan. 31, 1999

MICHIGAN CITY - Rev. Waymond "Wayne" Brown, 57, of Wabash Street, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday in his home of natural causes. Survivors include his wife, Sandra "Sue" (Howard); three sons, Timothy Brown of Imperial, Mo., James E. Brown of Michigan City and John Copenhaver, of Kelly Air Force Base, Texas; three sisters, Ena Mae Dickenson of Crossville, Tenn., Joan Golden of Smithville, Tenn., and Carolyn Norris of Sparta, Tenn.; and six brothers, Charles, James, Michael and Melvin, all of Sparta, David of Albany, N.Y., and Ernest of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Temple Baptist Church. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Root Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church Thursday.

Calvin R. Butler

Nov. 12, 1948 - Jan. 31, 1999

KNOX - Calvin R. Butler, 50, of 0404 S. County Road 800 East, died Sunday in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, after an illness. Survivors include his wife Rebecca; a daughter, Kelly Butler of Plymouth; two sons, Chayne of Plymouth and Chris of the United States Navy, stationed in Monterey, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Katie Nelson of Knox; his mother, Irene Butler of Plymouth; a sister, Malva Fear of Argos; and three brothers, Ben of Flagstaff, Ariz., Frank of Koontz Lake and Bruce of Wichita, Kan. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel, where friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. until services Thursday.

Francisco B. Cardenas

June 11, 1931 - Jan. 31, 1999

EAU CLAIRE - Francisco B. Cardenas, 67, of 6920 Evans Road, died Sunday in the Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph, of diabetes. Survivors include a son, Manuel Cardenas of Eau Claire; a stepdaughter, Maria Ruiz of Ruskin, Fla.; two stepsons, Enuque Guzman of South Bend and Francisco Guzman of Plymouth; two sisters, Guadelupe Ocanas and Joaentina Cardenas, both of Mexico; and two brothers, Manuel and Alfonso, both of Mexico. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Berrien Springs. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, and from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Bowerman Funeral Home.

Bert Conley

Nov. 15, 1909 - Jan. 29, 1999

WARSAW - Bert Conley, 89, of Columbus, Ga., formerly of Warsaw, died Friday in his son's home in Georgia. Survivors include four daughters, Gerry Bodas of Clinton, Tenn., Nita Cunningham of Dayton, Ohio, Joan Potter of Fort Worth, Texas, and Deborah Conley of Warsaw; nine sons, Ernie and Herman, both of Tucson, Ariz., Roger of Milford, Reuben of Etna Green, Dan, John and Robert, all of Warsaw, Ron of Pierceton and Mark of Columbus, Ga.; and two sisters, Beulah Salyers and Myrtle Carper, both of Carey, Ohio. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Abundant Life Church of God. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Titus Funeral Home.

Debra L. Davis

Dec. 1, 1961 - Jan. 29, 1999

SOUTH BEND - Debra Lynn Davis, 37, of 509 S. Falcon St., died Friday in Memorial Hospital. The death is being investigated by the St. Joseph County Coroner's Office. Survivors include her mother, Willie V. Davis of South Bend; three sisters, Dollie M. Watson of South Bend, Ida Stevenson of St. Louis and Marilyn Davis of Los Angeles; and two brothers, Charles Lee and Ronald Green, both of South Bend. Services will be at noon Wednesday in St. Paul Baptist Church where friends may call one hour before services. The Clark - O'Neal Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Michael R. Fitts

Feb 12, 1957 - Jan. 31, 1999

EDWARDSBURG - Michael Roy Fitts, 41, of 27971 Pine Lake St., died Sunday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, of lung cancer. Survivors include his wife, Rhonda K.; his mother, Doris Ashley of Dowagiac; and three sisters, Sherry Luttrell and Debi Miller, both of Cassopolis, and Linda Paulus of Sturgis. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Walley - Mills - Zimmerman Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
