Paul E. Michael

Paul E. Michael, 75, 11310N Goshen Rd., died at 5 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at the Markle Health Care Center, Markle.

Mr. Michael, a lifetime resident of Huntington County, retired as an operator agent with the Erie Railroad in 1985. He was one of the last employees of the Erie Railroad. He also served as a volunteer for Huntington Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, both of Huntington, and the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. He served in the Army during World War II.

He was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Kingsland, to Seth and Ollie Meta Berkfield Michael. He graduated from Bippus High School in 1943. He married Audrey Rupley in Huntington on Nov. 13, 1947. His wife survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Kevin (Carol) Bledsoe, Mrs. Greg (Patty) Sprinkle and Mrs. Bill (Mary) Richey, all of Huntington; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Carver, and a brother, John Michael.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Rev. James MacDonald will officiate. Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Keith and Nancy Carver Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Huntington College, 2303 College Ave., Huntington, IN 46750.

Charles I. Rowan

Charles I. Rowan, 68, 1401 Dayton Court, died at 5:10 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Rowan was retired from Food Marketing, Fort Wayne, where he had worked in a janitorial position. He was a member of the First Brethren Church and the Eagles Lodge. He had served in the Army during the Korean War.

He was born March 13, 1932, in Anderson, to Chat and Alpha Clarkson Rowan. His first marriage was to Ellen Campbell. She died in 1995. His second marriage was to Patricia Ann Van Meter on Sept. 16, 2000. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, James Robert Rowan, Cincinnati; a daughter, Mrs. John (Rebecca) Bartrom, Huntington; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mark (Rebecca) Campbell, Huntington; a stepson, Melvin C. Van Meter, Columbia City; two brothers, Edward Rowan and Carl Rowan, both of Anderson; a sister, Mrs. LaVon (Leanna) Hunter, Florida; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Rowan, plus a sister and a granddaughter.

Calling will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hart Funeral Home. Private services will be followed by burial at the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Charles R. Baker

Charles R. Baker, 80, 2135 Guilford St., died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at Community Care Center.

Mr. Baker, a lifelong Huntington resident, had been employed by Magnavox in Fort Wayne, for 28 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Huntington City Church of the Brethren and American Legion Post 7 and a lifetime member of the Roanoke Lions Club. He graduated from Huntington High School in 1938 and served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Huntington, a son of John Baker and Minnie Mote Baker. He married Norma Jean Bonebrake Dec. 20, 1943, in Huntington; his wife survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Steven D. Baker, Fort Wayne, and Neil E. Baker, Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Terry (Sandra) Hammel, Fort Wayne; a brother, Dorman Baker Sr., Huntington; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lee Baker, Max Baker, and William Baker, and three sisters, Christina Lindsey, Mary Vollmar, and Hazel Uhl.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. Ken Miller-Rieman and Rev. Howard F. Cherry will officiate.

Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington City Church of the Brethren.

Ruth E. Black

Ruth Elizabeth Black, 90, 685 Agnes St., died at died at 1:52 a.m. Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Black had lived in Huntington for three years. She was a long-time resident of Columbia City, where she owned and operated Black’s Restaurant. She had also owned the Crystal Cafe, in Huntington.

She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was member of the First Baptist Church, Huntington.

She was born Nov. 29, 1910, in Columbia City, to Vern and Lillie Rouch Kessler. Her marriage was July 26, 1930, to John Kenneth Black. He died in 1970.

She is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Clark, Huntington, Mrs. Donald (Jean) Noonan, San Juan, Texas, and Mrs. Tom (Diann) Cussen, Lafayette; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl Kessler, Mineral Wells, Texas, and Robert Kessler, Churubusco; and a sister, Mrs. William (Margaret) Phillips, Fort Wayne.

Preceding her in death were a son, Jack Kenneth Black; a great-grandson; a bother, Homer Kessler; and three sisters, Ocia Rodenbeck, Opal Johnson and Edna Rhodes.

Calling is from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. Charles Lyman officiating.

Burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City.

Preferred memorials are to First Baptist Church, 220 E. Market St., c/o Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, 338 E. Washington St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Naomi I. Carper

Naomi I. Carper, 77, a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor, died at 1:30 a.m. Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Blackford County Hospital, Hartford City.

Mrs. Carper was a former resident of Roll and retired from the Montpelier Glove Company. She was an Avon sales representative and cared for many elderly people after her retirement. She was a member of the Roll United Methodist Church and a 1924 graduate of Jefferson Township High School, Upland.

She was born March 31, 1923, in Grant County, a daughter of Olen E. Allen and Eva Sharp Allen. She married Arden Everett Carper Oct. 2, 1943, in Warren; her husband died May 28, 1975.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Susie) Harrison, Matthews, and Lois Collins, Warren; a sister, Mrs. Russell (Betty) Mount, Upland; two brothers, Paul Allen and Olen E. Allen, both of Cleburne, Tex.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel, 109 W. Windsor St., Montpelier, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Rev. Norm Glassburn will officiate. Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nazarene Church in Hartford City.

Louise Fusselman

Louise Fusselman, 82, 1392W-100S, died at 3:55 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at Markle Health Care Center.

Mrs. Fusselman, a lifelong Huntington County resident, was a 1936 graduate of Lancaster Center High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the Loon Creek Church of the Brethren.

She was born March 22, 1918, in Lancaster Township, Huntington County, a daughter of Charles M. Campbell and Sarah E. Gesaman Campbell. She married Luther S. Fusselman May 18, 1940, in Huntington; her husband survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Dennis E. Fusselman, Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Donna C.) Storey, Huntington; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A brother, John W. Campbell, is deceased.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Bailey-Love Mortuary, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. George Dorsett and Rev. Richard Stiver will officiate. Burial will be at Star of Hope Cemetery.

Bernadine L. Hoffman

Bernadine L. Hoffman, 82, Charlotte, Mich., died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001) at the United Methodist Memorial Home, Warren, following a long illness.

After attending Huntington College, Miss Hoffman graduated from Western Michigan University and taught school in Michigan before entering missionary service in Sierra Leone. She retired as secretary of Christian education and her 39 years of uninterrupted missionary service in Sierra Leone was the longest of any missionary in the history of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. In 1984, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Huntington College.

She was a member of Crossroads Church of the United Brethren in Christ, in Charlotte, Mich.

She was born April, 15, 1918 in Six Lakes, Mich., to Andrew and Ida Roush Hoffman.

Survivors include a foster son, Rev. Joseph C. Abu, Claymont, Del.; three grandchildren; and two nephews, including James Hoffman, Huntington; and a sister-in-law, Amy Hoffman, Warren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald A. Hoffman and Rowland Hoffman, and a sister, Lucille Stambaugh.

Calling is from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, 206 W. Lawrence Ave., Charlotte, Mich. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Crossroads United Brethren Church, 809 E. Shepherd St., Charlotte, Mich.

Interment will be at Bowne Mennonite Cemetery, Bowne Township, Kent County, Mich.

Preferred memorials are to Crossroads United Brethren Church, Charlotte, Mich., or to Mt. Zion United African Church, Philadelphia, Pa.
