James J. Shuttleworth
A prominent Huntington businessman died Thursday when his vintage plane crashed nose-first into a Wabash County farm field.
James J. Shuttleworth, 65, died at the scene of the 5:10 p.m. crash, Wabash County Coroner Marilyn McDonald said. Shuttleworth is CEO of Shuttleworth Inc., a multinational company based in Huntington.
“He went up to do a stall,” Indiana State Police Master Trooper Paul Daugherty said a witness told him. “He went up and straight down. He couldn’t pull it out and he crashed.”
Daugherty, who is heading the investigation, was at the scene this morning waiting for Federal Aviation Administration authorities to arrive for an inspection of the site. FAA inspectors were expected to be on the scene sometime this morning, but Daugherty wasn’t sure how long their investigation would take.
Shuttleworth, who was flying a vintage World War II P-51D Mustang, had left Huntington Municipal Airport 15 to 20 minutes before the crash, Wabash County Sheriff Leroy Striker said. He had no passengers.
At least three witnesses saw the crash, Striker said, and Daugherty said he has interviewed two of the them. Those witnesses said that Shuttleworth had been performing aerobatics when the engine stalled and the plane crashed nose first into the field. The initial investigation showed that the plane may have lost power while performing a stall maneuver, Striker said. There was no fire, Daugherty said. The weather was clear at the time of the crash.
Shuttleworth was a “very experienced” pilot, said Diane Redlich, who operates the Huntington airport with her husband Paul. He could frequently be seen in the skies above Huntington performing maneuvers with one of his vintage planes.
Thursday’s crash occurred in a cleared farm field along Ind.-16, east of Wabash CR 500E and 2.2 miles west of the Huntington-Wabash county line. Few homes are in the area. Initial reports placed the crash in Miami County, then in Huntington County, but Daugherty said emergency personnel had no trouble locating the scene.
The crumpled plane remained in the field Friday morning; Wabash County deputies had been assigned to guard the scene overnight. Shuttleworth’s body was not removed from the plane until about 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
“It’s a shame; that’s a piece of history there,” Daugherty said as he looked at the shattered plane Friday morning.
The Wabash County Sheriff’s Department was the first to respond to the scene, but has turned the investigation over to the Indiana State Police out of the Peru post. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will also be involved in the investigation. Fire departments from Urbana, Lagro, and North Manchester also responded Thursday, along with Wabash County Emergency Management. An ISP helicopter was at the site Friday to take aerial photos of the scene.
Daugherty said he plans to interview mechanics at Huntington Municipal Airport, where the plane was based.
