Lena J. Dickinson

June 13, 1938 - July 17, 1998
Lena J. Dickinson, 60, Francesville, died Friday, July 17, at her residence. She was born June 13, 1938, to Lloyd and Maxine Vance Cain, in Fortville. She was married August 11, 1962, to Roger Dickinson, in Frankton and he survives. She was a 1956 graduate of Frankton High School and attended business college and Ball State University. She had resided in Francesville for 20 years. She was a homemaker and also served as church secretary at the First Christian Church for eight years. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Francesville and was active in church activities, Bible school and church programs.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Rana Rodeffer of Mooreland and RaeJeanne Boehning of Francesville, a son, Ryan of Winamac; her mother, Maxine Cane of Anderson; three sisters, Janet Stout of Alaska, Connie Meredith of Lapel and Beverly Oliver of California; five brothers, Ronnie Cain, Garry Cain, Randy Cain and Danny Cain, all of Anderson and Kim Cain of Indianapolis and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were Monday at the First Christian Church, Francesville, with Jim Ketchen and Larry Music officiating. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville. Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home, Francesville, was in charge. Memorials may be given to the West Central Schools Education Foundation or the First Christian Church Scholarship Fund.

George E. Doremire

February 1913 - March 25, 1998
George Elwood Doremire, 85, West Lafayette, formerly Rensselaer, died at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday. March 25, at the Indiana Veterans Home, West Lafayette. He was born in Chalmers, Feb. 1913, to John Socrates and Maude Ora Myers Doremire. He was married Dec. 25, 1951, td Catherine Gertrude Zimmer in Chalmers. She died April 23, 1986. He attended the Chalmers High School. He was a veteran of World War II and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a self-employed farmer for 30 years, having lived in rural Jasper County. Prior to that he lived in Buffalo. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Chalmers, later named the Community Church. He was a member of the Rensselaer Senior Citizens Club.

He is survived by a stepson, Herman Lee Tweedie, Monticello; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Thomas (Nancy) Messman, Rensselaer; three brothers, Harry J., Monticello; Lester S., Chalmers; and John Billie, Lafayette; three sisters, Helen Riley, Lafayette; Mrs. Francis (Bessie) Reason, Fountaintown and Mary Evelyn Musselman, Garland, Texas; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A brother and two sisters are deceased.

Funeral services were Saturday at the Jackson Funeral Chapel, Rennselaer. Burial was in the Chalmers Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Melba M. Dorton

September 13, 1898 - October 7, 1988
Melba M. Dorton, 90, Brookston, died Friday, evening, Oct. 7, in Home Hospital. She had been a patient there since June 20. She was born Sept. 13, 1898, and came to Brookston from Hammond in 1951. She was a native of Chicago. Mrs. Dorton was a member of Brookston United Methodist Church, where she sung in the choir. Also, she was a member of Willing Workers; and Order of Eastern Star, Crystal Chaper in Monticello. She married Glenn A Dorton, Feb. 6, 1920, in Hammond. He died in 1970.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Lorraine Garrott, Brookston; two sons, Robert 0. Dorton, Midland, Mich., and Glen A. Dorton, Mount Vernon, Ohio; one brother, James Soderstrom, Griffith; and two sisters, Mrs. Estler Gardell, Highland and Mrs. Emma Allen, Munster. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren. Two brothers, 3 sisters, and one great grandson preceded in death.

Service was Monday at 11 a.m. at the Brookston United Methodist Church with the Rev Gene Ansell officiating. Interment was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston. Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge of service.

Pauline R. Douglass

February 3, 1917 - August 29, 1999
Pauline R. Douglass, 82, Monticello, died Sunday, Aug. 29 at Monticello Healthcare Center. She was born Feb. 3, 1917, to George L. and Hannah L. Connell Conwell, in White County. She was married May 13, 1934, to Gerald "Jack" Douglass, in Buffalo. He preceded her in death April 16, 1983. She attended Buffalo School and lived in the Monticello area most of her life. She had been a cook at the Monticello Nursing Home and she and her husband owned and operated Douglass Fertilizer for several years. She was a member of the Sitka Baptist Church and the Sitka Ladies Aid and Mission Society She was a charter member of the Merry Mixers Home Economics Club and was a volunteer for Contact Help and Meadowlawn Elementary.

She is survived by sons, Dwight Douglass of Athens, Ala. and John Douglass of Monticello; daughters, Connie Richardson and Mrs. Paul Roma Cripe, Monticello and Donna Douglass of Lakeland, Fla.; half-sisters, Avanell Salomon of Elkgrove Village, Ill, and Esther Owen of Buffalo; 12 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a half-brother.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Voorhis -Draper Funeral Home with the Rev. Junior Bose officiating Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Sitka Baptist Church or the American Diabetes. Association.

Eva Catherine Downing

August 11, 1916 - June 14, 1993
Eva Catherine Downing, 76, formerly of Indianapolis and Brookston, died Monday in the Lutheran Home in Mulberry where she had been a resident since October 1990. She was born August 11, 1916 in Battle Ground to Chester and Esta B. Newcomb Downing. She attended Battle Ground High School and Lafayette Business College. She lived in Indianapolis from 1942 until 1976 when she moved to Brookston. She worked for 32 years at the U.S. Army Finance Center in Indianapolis, retiring on December 31, 1974. She was a former member of the Brookston Church of Christ.

Survivors include two brothers, William W. of Meridian, Mississippi, and J. Frank of Ft. Wayne. Two sisters, Lilith E. Davies and Dorothy H. Kennedy, and 1 brother, Guy N. Downing, are deceased.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Brookston Church of Christ, Bill Romans officiating. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston. Memorial contributions can be made to the Brookston Church of Christ.

Frank Carl Downs

August 22, 1931 - March 17, 2001
Frank Carl Downs, 69, Rensselaer, died Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer.

He was born August 22, 1931 in Rensselaer, the son of James and Mabel Hayes Downs.

His marriage was to Marilyn Sue Storey.

Mr. Downs was a lifelong resident of Rensselaer, having been born and raised on a local farm.

He had been employed with Coca Cola Bottling Company as an assistant bottler and route salesman and alter was a truck driver for Wm. 0. Hopkins Trucking in Rensselaer. He was a sergeant with the U.S. Army, serving from March 1951 to March 1954, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the Rensselaer VFW Post 1279 and of the Paralyzed Veteran's Association.

Surviving are three sons; Roger Downs and Douglas Downs, both of Rensselaer and David Downs of Walkerton, Ind.; a daughter Beth (Brian Carroll) Downs of Rensselaer; a brother Robert (Myrtle) Downs of Rensselaer and several nieces and nephews. He also had 4 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services were this morning at Jackson Funeral Chapel in Rensselaer with Rev. Mark Calloway officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Morocco, Ind.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Dorothy Duncan

June 14, 1939 - January 24, 2002
Dorothy L. Duncan, 62, of Brookston died Thursday, January 24, 2002 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. She had been in failing health for 10 months battling Lymphoma.

She was born in Monticello on June 14, 1939, to Walter and Maude Randel Rogers. She married Dale E. Duncan at Monticello on August 21, 1959. He survives.

She attended Delphi High School and was a resident of Brookston for 35 years.

She had worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital as a Central Supply aid for 15 years, retiring in 1994. She worked at J & J Roadhouse in Brookston since 1995.

She was involved with Frontier Music and Athletic Boosters, Prairiette and Jefferson Township Extension Homemaker Clubs. She was also a 4-H mother, Dixon Dancing Parent and was an avid fan-supporter of Purdue Women's Basketball.

Other survivors include sons, Norman (Marge) Duncan of Lafayette, Daryl Duncan of Yeoman and Dean Duncan of Delphi; daughters, Cherie (Mark) Wilburn of Clermont and Carla Pickering of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren.

Services were at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home, Monticello on Monday with The Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds officiating.

Burial was in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Lymphoma Research or the American Diabetes. Association.

Frederick 'Fritz' Dunker

November 6, 1924 - January 7, 2000
Frederick "Fritz" Dunker, 75, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000 at his residence. He was born Nov. 6, 1924, to George and Thelma Strong Dunker, in Pulaski County. He was married Nov. 7, 1946, to Agnes Maxine Jeffries at Smithson, and she survives. He graduated from Chalmers High School in 1943, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He owned Dunker's Dari Isle in Brookston and retired in 1987 He had also worked for Hicksgas for 15 years and C& M Market in Reynolds. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Reynolds. He was a member of Chalmers American Legion Post 268.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Cheryl K. Dixon, Delphi and Sande M. Storey, Austin, Texas; a son, Stephen J. (Sharon) Dunker. Chalmers; brothers, Ray Dunker, Reynolds and Ken Dunker, Greenville; sisters, Norma Schroeder of Crossville and Nancy Bilyeu, Reynolds; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. A brother, Don is deceased.

Funeral services were Monday at St. James Lutheran Church with Pastor Stephen Koenig and the Rev. Dan Clemens officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge. Burial with military rites by Chalmers American Legion post 268 was at St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Reynolds. Memorials may be given to St. James Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.

Thelma M. Dunker

June 4, 1905 - June 12, 1994
Thelma M. Dunker, 89, Rt. 1, Reynolds, died Sunday morning, June 12, at her home. She was born in Winamac on June 4, 1905 to william and Minnie Hintz Strong. She married George M. Dunker on November 7, 1921, and he died August 24, 1984. She had lived in Reynolds since 1928. She and her husband farmed for several years. She was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds.

Surviving are three sons, Ray of Reynolds, Fritz of Brookston, and Kenneth of Greenville, TN; two daughters, Norma Schroeder of Crossville, TN, and Nancy Bilyeu of Reynolds; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. One son, Donald, two brothers and one sister are deceased.

Funeral services were held Wednesday in St. James Lutheran Church, the Rev. Stephen E. Koenig officiated. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery, Reynolds. Memorials can be made to the St. James Lutheran Church.

Wayne Carl Dunker Sr.

December 17, 1921 - October 19, 2001
Wayne Carl Dunker, Sr., 79, Battle Ground, died Friday, October 19, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been hospitalized since Tuesday.

He was born Dec. 17, 1921, to Fred Carl and Helen Yvonne Kessinger Dunker, in Rensselaer. He was married Aug. 22, 1942, to Betty Goss in Wolcott.

He graduated from Chalmers High School in 1940.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force and served from l942-46 in Europe at the Battle of the Bulge and also in Trinidad. He was a retired farmer.

In 1969, he moved from Chalmers to Battle Ground. He was a member of the Battle Ground United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Chalmers American Legion Post 268 and of the Lafayette EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association).

Survivors include a son, Charles Dale (Sheila) Dunker, Monticello; daughters, Kathy (Tom) Kingma of Gautier, Miss.; Bonnie (Ron) Moll, Latbyette; Becky (Jim Miller) Dunker of Battle Ground and Betsy (Jack) Elmore of LaFontaine; a brother, Gerald Dunker of Remington; 15 grand children; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter.

A son, Wayne Carl Dunker Jr., died in 1968.

Services were Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Pastor Tammy Mills officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brookston, with military rites by Chalmers American Legion Post 268.

Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army, the Red Cross or the World War II Memorial.

Merl H. Dunk

January 20, 1908 - October 21,1990
Merl H. Dunk, 82, R.1, Delphi, died Sunday, Oct. 21, at Birchwood Manor, Delphi, where he had been a patient tor 11 months. He was born Jan. 20, 1908, to Henry and Vina Peterson Dunk, in Tippecanoe County. He was married May 13, 1966, to Georgia Pittser Johnson, in Lafayette. She survives. He was a retired White County farmer. He was the night watchman at Peters-Revington Furniture Co. in Delphi, for eight years. He retired in 1973.

Survivors also include three stepsons, Harold Johnson, Jacksonville, Fla.; Elmer Johnson, R.2, Delphi and Charles Johnson, Rockfield; two stepdaughters, Colleen Forrest, Jacksonville, Fla., and Sharon Lee Vaughn; two sisters, Alice Gagnon, Brookston and Geneva Townsley, Lafayette; 16 stepgrandchildren; 32 step great grandchildren; and four step great great grandchildren. A brother is deceased.

The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Horn Funeral Home, Delphi, with Pastor Arnold Raabe officiating. Burial will be in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.

Velda DuVall

August 30, 1914 - January 15, 1987
Velda Ruth DuVall, 72, R.1, Monticello, died at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. She had been ill for nine months and hospitalized for one day. She was born in Jasper Co. near Lee on Aug. 30, 1914, to Elmer J. and Laura Culp Gilmore. She married Bruce DuVall, June 29, 1941. He survives. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Buffalo, where she was a past Sunday school teacher. She also belonged to the church's Ladies Aid Society and was active in other church affairs. She lived in Jasper and White counties all of her life, spending 10 years in Guernsey and 30 years in Buffalo. She lived on a farm all of her life.

Surviving with her husband is a step-mother, Ann Gilmore, Monon; two sons, Jack of Buffalo and Marvin of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Janice) Spencer of Boise, Idaho and Mrs. Joe (Kay) Martinez of Fort Wayne; five sisters, Mrs. Opal Clark of Chalmers, Mrs. Maybeth Brandenburg of Rensselaer, Mrs. Lola Mae Wise of South Bend; Mrs. Elberta Cook and Mrs. Maxine Heinzelman, both of Remington, and seven grandchildren. One grandson, one brother and one sister are deceased. Also deceased is a daughter, Carol Christian and one son, Dean, who was missing in action in Vietnam in 1966.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home with the Rev George Thomson and the Rev David Crowe officiating. Burial was at Buffalo Cemetery.
