Velma Marie Bryan Hendrickson
May 31, 1919 - January 4, 1993
Velma Marie Bryan Hendrickson, 73, 1919W Tippecanoe Co. Road 600N, died Jan. 4, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where she had been a patient since Dec. 23. She was in failing health past several months.
She was born May 31, 1919, to Chester J. and Agnes L. Stewart in Tippecanoe County.
She was a 1938 graduate of Battle Ground High School. She worked at Vendergraff's Greenhouse, West Lafayette, for five years.
She was a former member of Liberty Chapel EUB Church and Ladies Auxiliary of Merou Grotto West Lafayette.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Diana Van Horn, Lafayette and Mrs. Larry (Judith) Schurman, Muncie; two sons, Brian, Crawfordsville and Richard, Port Charlotte, Fla.; a brother, Jack Bryan, Toledo, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Everett (Marjorie) Ferguson, West Lafayette, and Ruth Bryan, Lafayette; seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday, at 11 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Ross Terry officiating. Calling will be 5-8 p.m., Thursday.
Burial will be in Battle Ground Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Kidney Foundation.
Goldia Anna Shepherd
July 5, 1900 - December 28, 1992
Goldia Anna Ryder Shepherd, 92, formerly of Battle Ground, died Monday, Dec. 28, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where she had been a patient since Oct. 2nd.
She was born July 5, 1900, to Korea and Clara M. Harshman Ryder, in Tippecanoe County. She was married March 11, 1920, to Earl W. Shepherd, who died April 15, 1984.
She moved in 1980, to the Tippecanoe Villa and had been living at St. Anthony's in Lafayette, since August 1991.
She was a member of Battle Ground United Methodist Church and the Pleasant Grove Grange.
Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. Marjorie Qualls, Brookston and Mrs. Beryl Nice, Lafayette; a nephew, Keith Nice, Largo, Florida; four great-nieces and a great-nephew. A sister is deceased.
The funeral was Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Lewis E. Ruman officiating.
Burial was in Battle Ground Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Battle Ground United Methodist Church.
Lyle Melvin Swisher
November 30, 1920 - March 1, 1993
Lyle Melvin Swisher, 72, Battle Ground, died Monday, March 1, in Home Hospital, Lafayette, He had been a patient for two weeks and was in failing health for two years.
He was born Nov. 30, 1920, to Elbert and Bessie Servic Swisher, in Boliver Township in Benton County. He was married Nov. 20, 1945, to Ella Scowden, in Lafayette, and she survives.
He lived all of his life, in the Battle Ground area and attended schools in Gilboa and Battle Ground.
He retired from Landis and Gyr in Lafayette, in 1984, where he was employed for 23 years.
He served in the Army from Sept. 1942 to Nov. 1945, in Company E, 282nd Infantry. He served in Sicily, the south of France, the Rhineland and Central Europe.
He was a former member of the Battle Ground Baptist Church.
Surviving with his wife are two sons; Maj. Melvin Lloyd Swisher, Lafayette and Ronald Earl Swisher, Sullivan; two daughters; Mrs. Philip (Jacqueline) Lehman, Battle Ground and Mrs. James (Glenda) Shoemaker, Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Wuanita Pharis, Lafayette; a stepmother, Kathryn Swisher, Lafayette; a stepbrother, Jay Summers, Lafayette; five half-sisters; Mrs. Donna Vogel, Mrs. Alberta Cook, Mrs. Judy Riley, Mrs. Linda Maddox and Mrs. Phyllis Kelley, all of Lafayette; four half brothers; James Swisher, John Swisher and Joe Swisher, of Lafayette; and Jerry Swisher, Florida; eight grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Three brothers are deceased.
The funeral was Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Pastor Harry Hargis officiating.
Burial was in Battle Ground Cemetery.

Doris M. Thornell
May 26, 1907 - January 18, 1991
Doris Mary Corns Thornell, 83, formerly of 2405 Potawatomi Drive, Lafayette, died Friday, Jan. 18, in George Davis Manor. She had been in ill health two years and a resident of the manor for the past 11 months.
She was born near Brookston, May 26, 1907, and graduated from Brookston High School in 1925. She moved from Battle Ground to Lafayette, in 1978. She was mar ried Dec. 31, 1929 to Harold B. "Chunk" Thornell, in Lafayette. He died Jan. 4, 1978. He was a yard foreman for Henry Poor Lumber Co. for 25 years.
Mrs. Thornell was a homemaker and she attended the Battle Ground United Methodist Church. She was a member of Friendship Club.
Surviving are son, Russell W. Thornell, Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Wanda Corns, Lafayette; and a brother, Leon Corns, Mulberry.
Also two grandchildren survive. Four brothers, 4 sisters preceded in death.
Funeral was Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Hippensteel Chapel, the Rev. Dr. R. Clayton Kendall.
Interment Battle Ground Cemetery.
Laura Kathryn Hauptli Walker
February 14, 1912 to May 8, 1995
Laura Kathryn Hauptli Walker, 83, Battle Ground, died Monday, May 8, at 9 a.m. at home.
She was born Feb. 14, 1912, in Cissna Park, Ill. She was married Sept. 7, 1940, to Howard W. "Red" Walker, in Rensselaer, and he expired Jan. 27, 1993.
She attended Francesville schools.
Since 1957, she lived in Battle Ground. She began her employ ment in 1962, as a cook at Battle Ground School and in 1975 she retired.
She was a member of the Battle Ground Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, James H. Walker, Lafayette; a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Janet) Fields, Elkhart; two brothers, Willis Hauptli, Francesville and Robert Hauptli, R.1, Rensselaer; two sisters, Mildred Waymire, Nahunta, Georgia and Emma Overman, Francesville; and two grandchildren, Jacob and Jessamyn Fields, Elkhart. Two brothers are deceased.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Lewis Ruman officiating.
Burial will be in the Battle Ground Cemetery.
Mildred Frances Abrams
October 14, 1915 - May 25, 2002
Mildred Frances Abrams, 86, of Medaryville, died May 25, 2002 at her daughter's residence in Chalmers following a 2 1/2 year illness.
She was born in Carroll County, KY, on October 14, 1915, the daughter of Clarence Christopher and Bessie Foster Dunn.
She graduated from Carrollton High School in Carrollton, KY.
She married Meyer Abrams on March 11, 1937 in Wellsburg, N.Y. He survives.
A homemaker, she had worked for 10 years for the State of Indiana Tree Nursery, Medaryville.
Surviving along with her husband are one daughter, Roslyn J. McLendon of Chalmers and three sons; Larry L. Abrams, San Diego, CA., Mark Abrams, Medaryville and James Christopher Abrams of Ft. Wayne.
One sister, Katie Ruth Dunn Yocum Blackman, preceded her in death.
She had 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
There was a direct cremation.
Kellogg Funeral Home was in charge of the body.
Della Adkins
October 30, 1917 - January 21, 2003
Della Adkins, 85, a resident of Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare, died Tuesday, January 21, 2003, at White County Memorial Hospital. She had been ill for two years.
She was born in Morehead, Ky., on October 30, 1917, to Paris and Ellen Elliott Keeton. She married Oscar Adkins in Morehead, KY. on January 8, 1935. He died on May 11, 1973.
She was a homemaker and a member of Milroy Baptist Church.
She had resided at the healthcare center for one year after moving from Monon.
Survivors include a son, Tom Adkins of Monon; daughters, Joanna Hensley of Monticello, Ora Jean Kidd of Columbia City and Betty June Alderson and Kathleen Goodman, both of Mendon, Mich.; a sister Margaret Kraft of Knox; a brother, Allen Keeton of Morehead, Ky.; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren
Four sons, a daughter, a brother, two sisters and five grandchildren are deceased.
Funeral services were Friday at Kellogg Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Piatt officiating.
Burial was at Buffalo Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Joseph G. Alkire Jr.
July 2, 1916 to July 9, 1991
Joseph G. Alkire Jr., 74, Brookston, died Tuesday, July 9, at his home.
He was born July 2, 1916 to Joseph G. Alkire Sr. and Lula White Alkire in Monitor, IN.
He was a veteran of World War II from November '42 to October '45 in C Company 48th AIB as a lineman.
He worked on the Monon Railroad in the '50's and '60's on the Brookston section crew.
One brother and 2 sisters are deceased.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, at 10 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Smith officiating.
Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
