Melvin "Mel" Johnson
August 8, 1910 - August 2, 2000
Melvin "Mel" Johnson, 89, of Lutz, Florida and formerly of Tippecanoe Co. , the brother of a local resident died Wednesday, August 2, in Tampa, Florida.
He was born August 8, 1910, to John Melvin and Rose Helfrich Johnson, in Rensselaer. He was married October 29, 1933, to Louise Dawkins, in Tippecanoe County and she survives.
He was a store manager for Montgomery Wards in Gary and was retired. He had lived in Lutz, Florida, since 1992, moving from Hobart
He was a member of Tims Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lutz, Florida
He was a member of Ohio Valley Scottish Rite. He was a 63-year member of West Lafayette Masonic Lodge No. 724.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mary Gavenas of Lutz., Fla.; a brother, John M. Johnson, Monticello; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Two brothers and a sister are deceased.
Funeral services for family and friends will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Chapel, West Lafayette, with the Rev. Tammy Mills officiating.
Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge of arrangements.
Ralph D. Johns, Sr.
August 15, 1905 - June 27, 1992
Ralph D. Johns Sr., 88, formerly of R.4, Delphi, died June 27, in the Brethren Home at Flora, where he had been a resident for three years.
He was born Aug. 15, 1905, to Emerson William and Myrtle Irene Schock Johns, in Carroll County. He was married June 26, 1926, to Ethel C. Dillman, in Delphi, and she survives. She is a resident of the Brethren Home.
He attended Flora High School and lived all of his life in Carroll County. He and his wife celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary June 26.
He was a retired fanner.
Surviving with his wife are one son, Ralph D. "Don" Jr., R.4, Delphi; five daughters: Mrs. Evan (Betty Jane) Lantz, R.4, Delphi; Mrs. Nelson (Pearl) Sines, R.4, Delphi; Mrs. Charles (Wilma) Wiles Lane, Tucson, Arizona; Mrs. Jim (Delorise) Yates, R.4, Delphi and Mrs. Richard (Marjorie) Strasser, Sebring, Fla.; one sister, Ruth M. Richardson, Pittsburg; 26 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. One grandson is deceased.
The funeral was Wednesday, at Horn Funeral Home, Delphi, the Rev. Alvin Grumbling officiating.
Burial was in Yeoman Cemetery.
Alva M. Johnston
August 31, 1915 - January 1, 2000
Alva M. Johnston, 84, Monticello, died Saturday, January 1, 2000, at Twin Lakes Village.
He was born Aug. 31, 1915, to Harry and Amy Herr Johnston. in Wolcott. He was married February 28, 1936, to Maxine V. Crawford, and she died May 27, 1996. He had lived all his life in the Monticello area and was a farmer and operated a mobile home court for 30 years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Monticello.
He had been a member of the former Bumettsville Masonic Lodge and was a current member of the Royal Center Masonic Lodge.
He also was a member of the White County Shrine Club, the Murat Temple and Scottish Rite Valley in Indianapolis and the York Rite in Lafayette.
He is survived by sons, L. Joe Johnston, John L. Johnston and James E. Johnston, all of Monticello; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. A brother is deceased.
Memorial service was held Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James Cobb officiating.
Memorials may be given to the Shriner's Children's Hospital or the American Heart Association, in lieu of flowers.
Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Richard Carlyle Jones
August 21, 1917 - April 8, 1989
Richard Carlyle Jones, 71, 302 W. Fifth Street, Brookston, died Saturday, April 8, in Veterans Administration Hospital, Indianapolis.
He was born Aug. 21, 1917, to Richard C. and Maida Bird Jones in Monterey, Virginia. He married Lorene Williams in 1987, who survives.
He was a 1933 graduate of Monterey High School and a 1938 graduate of Virginia Polytechnical Institute, Blackburg, Virginia.
He was an electronic engineer in the Navy and retired as a lieutenant commander after serving for 27 years. He was a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church.
Surviving along with his wife, are three daughters; Roberta Gintz, Betsy Perock and Jeannie Jones and a son, Rick, all of California; two sisters, Jane Andrews, Farmville, Va., and Mrs. Frank (Eleanor) Riddle, Brookston; three stepchildren, Greg Williams, Fort Worth, Texas; Master Sgt Walter Williams, Oscoda AFB, Mich.; and Tommy Williams, Winston-Salem, N.C.; stepdaughter, Vicki Williams, Winston-Salem; five grandchildren and three step grandchildren.
Funeral was Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Loren Shuman officiating.
Burial was in Monterey.
Henrietta 'Babe' Kassabaum
April 29, 1905 - March 30, 1992
Henrietta "Babe" Kassabaum, 86, formerly of Brookston, died March 30, in Skill Nursing Home in McAllen, Texas, where she had been a patient for four years. She lived in San Benito, Texas.
She was born April 29, 1905, in Badger Grove Community and had lived in Texas, since 1929. She married Carl Kassabaum, Feb. 14, 1927, in Chalmers. He died in 1962.
Surviving are two sons: Bob Kassabaum, Albuquerque, N.M. and Kenneth Kassabaum, Atlanta, Texas; a daughter, Flora Spiecer, Alamo, Texas and a sister, Mrs. Olive Holwerda. Brookston.
Funeral services and burial was in San Benito, Texas.
Margaret M. Keefer
August 17, 1916 - March 1, 2001
Margaret M. Keefer, 84, Bailey Rd., Monticello, died Thursday, March 1, 2001 at White County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Pembroke, Ontario, Canada on August 17, 1916, the daughter of Robert and Elsie Farrell Dunlop. She married Paul Keefer in East Chicago, Ill., on September 18, 1931. He died in 1992.
She lived in Monticello since 1969 and was the former owner and operator of Breezy Hill Bait Shop on the Big Monon.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, where she was also a member of the Rosary Society.
She is survived by a son, Robert Keefer of Hammond; a daughter, Pat Johnson of Monticello; a sister, Edna (Dr. Clyde) Courtice of New Port Richey, Florida; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A brother is deceased.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church with Rev. James Goodrum officiating.
Burial was in Bedford Cemetery. Voorhis Draper Funeral Home was in charge.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.
Jessica Nichole Keen
July 26, 1988 - December 15, 1989
Jessica Nichole Keen, 16 month old daughter of Richard and Rhonda Parr Keen, 1003 Armory Rd., Delphi, died at 5 p.m., Friday, in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. She was injured in an automobile accident Friday morning north of Logansport.
She was born July 26, 1988, in Lafayette.
Besides her parents, survivors include a brother, Matthew Richard Keen, at home; maternal grandparents, David and Catherine Parr, Brookston and Stan Braden, Burrows; maternal great grandparents, Mary Jackson, Borden and Marjorie Parr, Brookston; paternal grand mother, Sandy Keen, Delphi; and paternal great grandmother, Frances Dubea, Goodland.
The funeral was conducted Tuesday, Dec. 19, in Horn Funeral Home, Delphi, with the Rev. Donald Hardebeck officiating.
Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Rev. William Clinton Kehlhofer
Rev. William Clinton Kehlhofer, 57, and a former resident of the area, of 2562 S. 600 W., Marion, IN, died in his residence at 9:l0 a.m., Monday, June 18. He had been ill since April.
He was born April 3, 1944 in Bronx, New York and had lived in City Island, New York, Holiday, Florida, West Lafayette, Independence, IN and Monon before moving to Marion, IN. in 2000.
He married Diana Ruth, Dec. 31, 1983, in Florida and she survives. He graduated from DeWitt-Clinton High School in Bronx, New York and Garrett Theological Seminary for Pastoral Course of Study in Evanston, Illinois. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, from where he was called to the ministry. Before he began his ministry he was employed by ABC in New York and was an assistant bank manager and trainer for 20 years in Florida. He pastored in various United Methodist churches in northern Indiana, including Weaver Chapel, Riverview at Independence, Monon United Methodist and Herbst United Methodist.
He was a fan of the New York Mets baseball team. He was a member of Fountain-Warren Co. Ministerial Association and Monon Ministerial Association.
Also surviving is a son, Daniel Carl Kehlhofer of Marion, Indiana.
The service was Saturday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lafayette with Dr. Gary Forbes and Rev. Larry Ray officiating. The Hippensteel Funeral Home, Lafayette, was in charge.
Burial was in Independence Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the family.
Infant Brockney Adam Keil

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday, Sept.19, at Brookston IOOF Cemetery
for infant Brockney Adam Keil, who was dead at birth, Sunday, Sept. 16, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette.
He was the son of Kimberlie Burget of Brookston and Richard Keil of Lafayette.
Also surviving are maternal grandparents, Loren and Nancy Burget, Brookston; paternal grandparents, Mrs. Janice Keil, Lafayette and Richard Keil, Tucson, Arizona; maternal great grandfather, Ray Wooldridge, Chalmers; and paternal great grandmother, Mrs. Rebecca Benifiel, Flora.
The Rev. Dr. Ralph Smith officiated and Hartzler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
