Ruby E. Ryder Nice
August 20, 1902 - November 5, 1991
Ruby E. Ryder Nice, 89, Brookston, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, in St. Anthony Health Care, Lafayette, where she had been a resident since May 19, 1989.
She was born Aug. 20, 1902, to Korah and Clara Harshman Ryder, in Tippecanoe County. She was married Dec. 7, 1920, to Leon Nice, who died Oct. 8,1981.
She moved to Brookston from Lafayette, in 1984.
She was a member of the former Cairo Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Qualls, Brookston; a son, Keith E., Largo, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Golda Shepherd, St. Anthony Health Care; five grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.
A son, three grandsons and a great grandson are deceased.
The funeral was today at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Gene Ansell officiating.
Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
Irvin N. Nicholson
January 12, 1919 - June 4, 1988
Irvin N. Nicholson, 69, died Saturday, June 4, of a heart attack at his home in French Lick, Ind.
He was born Jan. 12, 1919, in Cuzee, Indiana, to Clyde and Alice Conrad Nicholson and later he served in the Navy during World War II and was wounded in Sicily. After his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Nicholson raised Tennessee walking horses. He was a member of the French Lick American Legion and the Saddle Club of French Lick.
Surviving are a daughter, Vicky Mills, Goshen; a stepson, Terry Howell, Shoals; one brother, Truman Nicholson, Chalmers; four sisters: Wilda Mills, Wolcott; Helen Asbell, West Baden; Marilyn Holt, Shoals and Etta Lou Bair, Dubois; and three grandchildren. His wife, Isol preceded him in death in April, 1979.
Services were conducted Thursday, June 9, in French Lick. Burial was in the Cuzco Community Cemetery.
William R. Nicolas
April 11, 1927 - August 19, 1998
William R. Nicolas, 71, Walkerton, the brother of a Buffalo resident died Wednesday, Aug. 19, at his residence after a sudden illness.
He was born April 11, 1927, to William J. and Lydia Shedrow Nicolas, in Jasper County.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict and the Vietname War and was retired from the service.
He was a former correctional officer at the Medaryville Youth Camp.
He had lived for 21 years in the Walkerton area coming from Medaryville.
He was a member of the Knox VFW and the Knox American Legion.
He is survived by his companion of 21 years, Jennette Wobith of North Judson; two sisters, Margaret Van Buskirk, Medaryville; and Marcella Nielsen of Buffalo; a brother, Dennis of Culver and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Saturday at Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel with Rev. Anthony Spanley officiating.
Burial was in Highland Cemetery, North Judson.
Dean Norman
April 11, 1939 - December 16, 2002
Dean Norman, 63, of Monon, died Monday, December 16, 2002, in Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare.
He was born April 11, 1939 in Rensselaer, the son of Eldo and Ellen Nightengale Norman.
He was raised in Monon and graduated from Monon High School in 1957.
He is survived by his loving mother, Ellen Norman of Monon; his loving wife of 32 years, Nancy Louise (Viney) Norman of Monon and daughter Laura Norman of Valparaiso, loving sister Sue (Norman) Querry of Riverside, CA; and four children from a previous marriage to Juanita Gutwein: Diana Houston of Monon; Jerry (Tina) Norman of Yorktown, VA; Ken (Kathy) Norman of South Bend and Kelli Norman of Virginia Beach, VA.
He had eight grandchildren: Teresa Houston, Dustin Norman, Jennifer Norman, Phillip Norman, Sarah Norman, Kayla Norman, Kristen, and Cherith Norman. His father, Eldo Norman, preceded him in death.
Dean was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Monon where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Youth Group Leader for many years. He was a light and example of Christ in all.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed and lived life to its fullest. He retired from ALCOA after 27 years of employment in November 2000.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 20, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Monon at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 19, 2002, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home in Francesville.
Memorials may be made to the Monon EMT's, First Baptist Church of Monon or Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare.
Flora Victor North
April 16, 1903 - September 10, 1989
Flora Victor North, 86, formerly of R.1, Brookston, died Sunday Sept. 18, in Miller's Merry Manor, Garrett. She had moved in with her daughter in 1986, and had lived in the nursing home since March 1988.
She was born April 16, 1903, to Leonidas and Effie Ginn Victor, in Brookston. She was married in 1925, to Minor North in Lafayette. He died in 1956.
She graduated from Brookston High School in 1922.
She retired after working as a secretary at the former Brookston School from 1959 to 1965.
She was a member of Badger Grove Community Baptist Church Merry Workers Sunday school class and Crystal Chapter No. 165, Order of the Eastern Star, Monticello.
Survivors include a daughter; Mrs. Don (Karen) Crawford of LaOtto; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Shultz, Brookston; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Six brothers are deceased.
The funeral was Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral - Home, Brookston.
Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
Leslie W. North
February 7, 1938 - May 1, 1998
Leslie W. North, 60, died Friday, May I, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been ill for one year.
He was born, Feb. 7, 1938 in Lafayette to M. Marvene and Pearl Little North. He was married Aug. 26, 1960, to Myrna A Grassmyer, in Brookston. She survives.
Surviving with the wife are two daughters. Mrs. Roger (Shelly) Poindexter of West Lafayette and Stacia Harrell of Norcross, Ga.; a son, Scott L. of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Don (Carol) Grimes of Milten, Fla; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with Pastor Henry Vosburgh and Pastor Andy Overly officiating.
Nanette Edmonds North

Mrs. Nanette Edmonds North, of Brookston, Ind., died in her home on Nov. 12, 1988.
She was born in Lafayette, Ind., to Joseph L. Edmonds and Jeanette Teller Edmonds. She was the wife of Mr. Warren North, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. North graduated from DePauw University in 1956, with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. For more than thirty years she was a recognized authority in the fashion industry. Because of this, she was the recipient of many national awards, among them the Mademoiselle Merit Award, and was listed in the first publication of Outstanding Women in America. For three years Mrs. North was the Fashion Voice for CBS Radio. She was also a member of the Stephens and Columbia Colleges Advisory Boards.
During her marriage with Mr. North, she was a Precinct Co Chairman for the White County Democratic Party and a member of the Board of Directors for the Long Center for the Performing Arts.
Surviving family members include her son Richard W. North; two brothers, Joseph L. Edmonds and Rex Teller Edmonds; and two sisters, Sandra Kay Edmonds Cole and Janet Sue Edmonds Holden, as well as nieces and nephews.
Services were Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Rev. John Howald Jr. officiating.
Burial was at IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
Memorials may be. given to the Lafayette Symphony.
R. Warren North
October 10, 1913 - February 8, 1988
R. Warren North, 74, Green Ridge Farms, Brookston, a prominent White Co. farmer and cattleman, died at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, in Home Hospital in Lafayette. He had been hospitalized since Jan. 15.
Born Oct. 10, 1913, in Brookston, he graduated from Brookston High in 1931. He was twice the host for the Farm Progress show of the Midwest
Mr. North was a member of Brookston Federated Church and has served as church organist for more than 30 years. He was a White County precinct committeeman; was on the board of directors of Long Center for the Performing Arts; and was president of the Concert Group of Monticello.
He also was co-founder of the Long Center Theatre Organ Society and he donated the grand theater organ at Long Center.
In December 1985 he married Nanette Edmonds, and she survives.
Mr. North enjoyed classical music and he and Mrs. North often were hosts in their home for concerts, entertaining several hundred people.
Surviving with the widow are one son, Richard W. North of Chicago; and a twin sister, Mrs. John (Wanda) Klepinger of Delphi.
Service was today in Brookston Federated Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Duncan MacNab officiating. The Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston was in charge.
Interment was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
William A. "Bill" North
March 5, 1925 - June 20, 1993
William A. "Bill" North, 68, of Lakeland, FL, formerly of Brookston and Wolcott, died Sunday, June 20 in Lakeland.
He was born March 5, 1925 in Lafayette to Melville and Marie Rawels North. He married Fern R, Richardson on July 29, 1944 in Indianapolis.
He was a 1943 graduate of Brookston High School and an Army veteran of World War II.
He moved to Jensen Beach, FL, in 1980, and lived in Lakeland for the last four years.
He was employed by Farmers State Bank of Brookston for 23 years, and for 12 years at the Bank of Wolcott where he was a vice president and director.
He was a member of the Brookston Federated Church, American Legion Post No. 251 in Brookston, Libanus Masonic Lodge in Monticello, and the Murat Shrine Temple and Scottish Rite in Indianapolis.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Bill of Glendale Heights, IL, and Gary of Bollingbrook, IL; one daughter, Donna Waymire of Lakeland; one brother, Richard of Indianapolis; one sister, Bernice Hasselburg of Las Vegas; and 8 grandchildren.
Following cremation in Florida, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Loren Shuman officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Inurnment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
