BLANCHE BERGKAMP

FOWLER -- Blanche Bergkamp, 90, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Fowler Nursing Home in Fowler.

She was born Aug. 28, 1912, to John and Clara Gerber Steffan in Nashville-St. Leo parish, Kan.

She married Henry Bergkamp July 31, 1934, in Fowler. He died June 14, 1970.

She attended Fowler schools, graduating from Fowler High School in 1930.

She was a member of the Altar Society, Daughters of Isabelle, and the Fowler High School Alumni Association, all in Fowler. She also was a member of the Meade County Historical Society, Meade.

She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fowler.

Survivors include one son, Bill Bergkamp and wife, Rita, Fowler; one daughter, Aldine Maier and husband, Gene, Duncan, Okla.; 10 grandchildren, Donald Bergkamp, Edward Bergkamp, Joseph Bergkamp, Barbara Bergkamp, Sharon Glenn, Lorie Robbins, Karen Johnson, David Maier, Jerry Maier, and Robert Maier; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by her parents; and one infant brother, Adolph, in 1917.

Daughter of Isabelle Vigil services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fowler.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Father Robert Schremmer presiding.

Burial will be at Fowler Cemetery in Fowler.

Friends may call from until 5 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fowler in care of Fidler-Orme Funeral Home, P.O. Box 70, Meade, KS 67864.

SIKA KHAMPHOUVONG

Sika Khamphouvong, 67, Liberal, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born June 6, 1936, in Laos.

He married Bounma Thummavongsa April 6, 1986, in Thailand. She survives.

He had served in the Laotian Army in the 1960s.

He has been a Liberal resident since 1990. He had worked as a meat packer at National Beef in Liberal for five years.

Other survivors include two sons, Sim Khamphouvong, and Bouakham Khamphouvong; three daughters, Oua Khamphouvong, Phim Khamphouvong, and Tim Khamphouvong; and two grandchildren, Jasmine Gina Le, and Ryan Khamphouvong; all of Liberal.

Cremation services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Western Crematory in Dodge City.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday and 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

JOHN W. MOORE

John W. "Jack" Moore, 84, Liberal, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born July 11, 1918, to Ernest W. and Winifred (Alexander) Moore in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He married Margaret Colvin March 23, 1939, in Palo Alto, Calif. She survives.

He moved to Liberal with his parents in 1927 from Chanute, and he graduated from Liberal High School in 1935.

He attended the New Mexico Institute in Roswell, N.M., where he graduated from junior college in 1937. He graduated from Stanford University in 1939 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He entered the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in 1941, and served in Europe as a member of Eisenhower's G-4 staff for the last three years of World War II.

He finished the last year of the war as a Lt. Colonel and was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star, among other commendations.

He returned to Liberal in 1945, and joined the family farming operations in Texas County, Okla., and Baca County, Colo. He also worked with his father in the Liberal Gas Company, and took it over after his father's death in 1947. He remained CEO of Liberal Gas until it was sold in 1988.

He helped start Kids Inc, he served on the Santa Fe Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America, started the Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch, was a key in getting Liberal a NAtional Guard Armory, and served as drive chairman for the United Way,

He established the Liberal Athletic Club and was sponsor and coach of Golden Gloves for 10 years.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, Wichita Consistory, a Shiner and a Jester. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Liberal Country Club.

He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Liberal.

Other survivors include three sons, Mike Moore and wife, Lisa, Liberal, John W. Moore Jr. and wife, Connie, Guymon, Okla., and Casey Moore and wife, Marcia, Corvallis, Ore.; three daughters, Dr. Kathryn Haskins, PHD, and husband, Burton III, Denver, Margaret "Molly" Moore, Ft. Worth, Texas, and Jane Moore, Liberal; one sister Jane Moore, Meade; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Thomas E. Moore; and infant daughter, Kathleen.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Liberal with the Father James Shannon presiding.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Andrews Episcopal Church in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.

DONNA MARIE MOENK

Donna Marie Moenk, 43, Liberal, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born June 24, 1959, to Richard and Aileen Blevins in Columbus, Ohio.

She married Roger S. Moenk May 5, 1993 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He survives.

She moved to Liberal in 1989 from Borger, Texas, and worked for the Mid-America Truck Stop and Pay-Less Shoes.

She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Other survivors include her parents; one daughter, Dreama Kay Imler and husband, Jamie, Kismet; four sisters; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Ryan and Miles Pearce and Rusty Ritchson.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard "Ricky" Blevins.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Miller Chapel with Rev. Bill Prater presiding.

Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 8 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

LULA FAY (BISHOP) WOODS

Lula Fay (Bishop) Woods, 83, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born Jan. 13, 1920 to Jerry D. and Cora Mae Hayden Bishop southwest of Springfield, Colo.

She married Ralph R. Woods Sept. 3, 1937 in Lamar, Colo. He survives.

She is also survived by two sons, Jerry (Butch) and wife, Bonnie, Laredo, Texas and Sam and wife, Jennifer, Sacramento, Calif.; one daughter, Patricia Higgins and husband, Bob, Plains; one brother, Orla (Bunt) Bishop Walsh, Colo.; two sisters, Thelma (Tom) Nugent, Springfield, Colo and Pansy (Peg) Snyder, Canon City, Colo.; ten grandchildren, Sherri Higgins, Skippack, Pa., Rick Higgins, Grain Valley, Mo., Brad Higgins, Forgan, Okla., John Higgins, Grain Valley, Mo., Joni and Bob Hart, Gillette, Wyo., Michael and Marie Higgins, Olathe, Wendy and Robert Cannady, Culleoka, Tenn., Skipper and Maria Woods, Laredo, Texas, Alissa and Alonna Woods both of Denver, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four bothers, her twin, Elba Ray (Budge), Leo, Grant and Frances Edmund (Short); four sisters, Eula Caldwell, Ada Mae Johnson, Wilma Wallace and Meskel Bishop.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church June 8 in Springfield, Colo.

Memorial donations may be sent to Southeast Colorado Hospital and Long-Term Care Facility at 373 E. 10th, Springfield, CO 81070.

Arrangements are being handled by Dykes Funeral Home of Walsh, Colo.

BETTY JANE ROMERO

ELKHART­­ -- Betty Jane Romero, 71, Elkhart, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at her home.

She was born Sept. 4, 1931, to Jess and Margaret Horner in Red River, N.M.

She married Joe T. Romero Dec. 27, 1963 in Raton, N.M. He survives.

She was a resident of Elkhart since 1981, and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Elkhart.

Her hobbies included crotheting, cooking, housekeeping and yardwork.

Other survivors include three sons, Clifton Horner, Elkhart, Herb Horner, Guymon, Okla., and Bruce Romero, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Betty Jo Jenkins, Elkhart; two brothers, Tommy Horner, San Diego, Calif., and Vernon Horner, Raton, N.M.; four sisters, Jessie Grubelnik, Raton, N.M., Shirley Oldham, Lawton, Okla., Francine Marshall, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Helen Berg, Raton, N.M.; eleven grandchildren, Brenda Horner, Bridgett Horner, Kirby Horner, Kerry Horner, James Jenkins, Janna Horner, Christina Holbert, Kyle Jenkins, Lacey Jenkins, Kinsey Romero, and Devin Romero; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, at United Methodist Church in Elkhart with Rev. James Brackett presiding.

Burial will be at the Elkhart Cemetery.

Friends may call on Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home, Elkhart

Memorials may be given to The American Diabetes Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, P.O. Box 854 Elkhart, KS 67950.

JOHN "BILL" BRANDEN

MEADE --­­ John "Bill" Branden, 77, Meade, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at his residence.

He was born March 23, 1926, to Russell L. and Iva Foutch Branden in Kingman.

He married Elsie Painter Sept. 29, 1957, in Hugoton. She survives.

On March 29, 1957, living in Hugoton, he began working for the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service as an Engineering Technician, working in Morton, Stanton and Finney Counties for 27 years.

He was a member of the Webb Lodge #275, Meade; the Scottish Rite Consistory Midian Shrine, Wichita; the York Rite Bodies; the Golden Cycles of the Garden City Shrine Club; the Elks Lodge, Garden City; American Legion of Garden City and Meade; Meade Country Club, and attended the First Baptist Church in Meade.

Other survivors include a son, Larry Stucker, S.C.; a daughter, Jeannie Stucker, Manhattan; three half brothers, Russell Branden, Sublette, Jim Branden, Kingman, and Bob Branden, Mexico; two grandchildren, Natalie Stucker, Ft. Worth, Texas, Nicole Youngblood and husband, James, Yuma, Arizona; one great-grandson, Justin Youngblood; seven nephews and two nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Meade with Rev. Harry Fink presiding.

Memorials are suggested to the Shrine Hospital or the Kansas State University Center for Basic Cancer Research, both in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, P.O.Box 70 212 S. Fowler, Meade, KS 67864.
