Joe Nicholson

LAKIN -- The funeral for Joe Nicholson, 85, of Lakin, was at 2 p.m. today at Lakin Cemetery in Lakin with the Rev. Jeffrey Lee officiating. Burial was at Lakin Cemetery, Lakin.

Mr. Nicholson died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was born Sept. 15, 1914, at Clayton, N.M., the son of Bill Nicholson and Lena Hamilton.

Mr. Nicholson grew up in Clayton and attended schools there. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a master sergeant.

On Feb. 1, 1941, he married Ophelia "Susie" Williams in Clayton, N.M. They lived in Clayton until they moved to Lakin in 1947 and have lived there since. He is preceded in death by his wife, who died on March 28, 1993, and seven brothers and sisters.

He retired from the Colorado Interstate Gas Co., and at the time of his retirement he was working as a pipeline superintendent.

Mr. Nicholson enjoyed golfing, traveling and he especially enjoyed being with his family, being very proud of his great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lakin and Men's Golf Association in Lakin.

He is survived by one son, Mike Nicholson, Oakland, Calif.; one daughter, Janet Tarpley, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Blanche LaChance, Newberry, Calif. and Essie Mae Houghton, Las Vegas; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimers Foundation in care of the funeral home.

Ernest W. 'Ernie' Mann

ULYSSES -- Ernest W. "Ernie" Mann, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at Garden City Valley Retirement Villa in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 9, 1918, at Dodge City, the son of A.J. (Fred) and Roba Sidwell Mann.

A resident of Garden City since January 1999, he also lived in Ulysses and moved to Glendale, Ariz., upon retirement.

While living in Ulysses, Mr. Mann was involved 46 years in the auto parts business. He also owned and managed stores in Elkhart, Scott City and Lakin.

He served on the Ulysses City Council, was mayor of Ulysses, chairman of the board of Ulysses Housing Authority, served on the planning commission and Industrial Development, was a member of the U.S. Golf Association and on the board of directors of the Ulysses Golf Association, served on the board of directors of Southwest Savings and Loans an a charter stockholder, former commander of the Ulysses American Legion, Rotary Club member, member of Grant County Chamber and the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses.

On March 3, 1969, he married Emmagene "Genie" Adams Mann in Longview, Wash. She preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1984. He also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include three sons, Gerald Mann, Thorton, Colo., Rodney Crawshaw, Aledo, Texas, and George Binney, Chimacum, Wash.; four daughters, Susan Heiman, Garden City, Betsey Fowler, Tukwila, Wash., Judy Whaley, Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Julie Beth Baxter, Madison, Ala.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Richmond Graham officiating. Burial will be in the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be given to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Ralph D. Kepley

Ralph D. Kepley, 92, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born Jan. 1, 1907, in southwest Grant County, the son of Edward Austin Kepley and Nellie Burr (Reynolds) Kepley.

He was a lifetime resident. He was a farmer and a stockman. Mr. Kepley and his brothers and sisters, along with their father, were pioneers of crop irrigation in the area.

He married J. Louise (Grubbs) on Feb. 27, 1937, at Moscow. She preceded him in death on July 1, 1972. He also was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth; one daughter, Judith; and one sister, Bernice.

Mr. Kepley served on the Golden Board and the Grant County Rural High School Board for a total of 25 years. He was a chairman of the Grant County and Ulysses School Unification Board, Ulysses Cooperative Board, where he was a chairman for 12 years, Farm Bureau board member and helped organized the Grant County Extension Service. He was a coach, announcer and commissioner for Ulysses Little League Baseball, was a member of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas State University Farm Management Association, Southwest Kansas Irrigation Association, Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association, First United Methodist Church, Rotary, Farm Bureau, Grant County Fair Board, Kansas Crop Improvement Association, and was a Kansas State University Alumni Friend. He was honored as the Grant County Citizen of the year, Balanced Farming and Living Family, Kansas Farm Family of the Year at the Kansas City American Royal, Grant County Banker's Soil Conservationist, and Paul Harris Rotary Fellow. He kept weather records for Grant County that date back to 1888.

Mr. Kepley is survived by three sons, Larry Kepley, Ulysses, Garry Kepley, Springfield, Ill., and Roger Kepley, Wichita; one daughter, Janice Firling, Apex, N.C.; seven grandchildren, one son-in-law, two daughters- in-law; two brothers, Ray Kepley and Ed Kepley, both of Ulysses; and one sister, Nellie Burr Lattimore, Salina.

Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton officiating. Burial will be at Golden Cemetery, Ulysses.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.

Memorials may be given to Grant County Historical Society, First United Methodist Church, Youthville at Dodge City, the Kansas State University Western Kansas Water Use Efficiency Research Project, or donor's choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Sergio Espino

Sergio Espino, 14, of 1906 A St., died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born June 19, 1985, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Antonio and Adelina (Perez) Espino. A Garden City resident since the age of 9, he attended Garden City schools and was a freshman at Garden City High School. He attended St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed reading, fishing, music, and playing soccer and basketball.

He is survived by his parents and a brother, Ivan Espino, all of the home; his grandparents, Petra Jarquin and Mercedes Espino, both of Mexico; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Vigil service will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, followed by Spanish rosary. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Orestes M. Huerta officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 6:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Berenece Leonard

SUBLETTE -- Berenece Leonard, 92, of Sublette, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at Garden Valley Retirement Center, Garden City, where she had been a resident.

She was born Nov. 4, 1907, in Pratt County, the daughter of Edward F. and Nettie (Davis) Combs.

On Feb. 5, 1928, she married Floyd W. Leonard at Cullison. They moved from Pratt County to Haskell County in February 1928.

Mrs. Leonard was a member of the Christian Church, Banner Club and Haskell County HDU, and was a former leader of Victory 4-H, all at Sublette. She loved to cook (especially popcorn balls and cookies), enjoyed raising flowers (especially roses), liked to play dominoes, and enjoyed traveling and fishing.

She is survived by her husband, Garden City; a son, Floyd J. Leonard, Sublette; a daughter, LaVelle King, North Glen, Colo.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dale W. Leonard; a granddaughter; a grandson; and three brothers, Melvin Combs, Frank Combs and Allen Combs.

Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Rev. David Erwin officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday, and from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the church or Garden Valley Retirement Center, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Raymond Meier

Vigil service for Raymond Meier, 83, will be 7 tonight at Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Dodge City, with the Rev. Ted A. Skalsky officiating.

Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 1714, Dodge City.

Mr. Meier died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at the Lutheran Home in Herington.

He was born June 18, 1916, at Hays, the son of John and Rose (Quint) Meier. On Jan. 25, 1945, he married Marie B. Stegman at Spearville. She died Oct. 19, 1996. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, William, Meinard and Francis.

A Dodge City resident since 1955, moving from Hanston, he worked for the B.F. Goodrich Co. for many years and then worked for the City of Dodge City. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and DAV of Dodge City and a charter member of the Duncan Crossing VFW Post of Hanston.

He served in the U.S. Army, 137th Infantry, 35th Division as a staff sergeant in World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star and the Purple Heart with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster.

He is survived by two sons, Michael J., Garden City, and Patrick R., Herington; a daughter, Nancy A. Ditges, Hutchinson; three grandsons; and one granddaughter.

Visitation hours are until 7 tonight at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the National World War II Memorial, in care of the funeral chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.
