Barbara L. Dunbar

SCOTT CITY -- Barbara L. Dunbar, 70, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born Nov. 17, 1929, at Wichita, the daughter of George M. and Mabel Adealia (Truman) Stolz.

Mrs. Dunbar had been a resident of Scott City since 1994, moving from Truckee, Calif. She was a retired electronics technician and a member of First Baptist Church of Scott City.

She is survived by a son, Richard D. Dunbar, Lafayette, Colo.; a daughter, Cheryl A. Dunbar, Portland, Ore.; a sister, Ruth A. Smith, Scott City; four brothers, Jim A. Stolz and G. Michael Stolz, both of Springdale, Ark., Wesley M. Stolz, Fayetteville, Ark., and Ralph E. Stolz, Windsor, Colo.; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Inurnment will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Beverly Ann Davis

Beverly Ann Davis, 67, of Plains, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born June 9, 1932, at Malvern, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Isabelle (Yegge) Mulholland. She was a graduate of Stanford University.

Mrs. Davis had been a resident of Lodi, Calif., for many years before moving to Plains in 1998, and was a retired Hallmark business owner and teacher. She attended the United Methodist Church and belonged to Friends of the Library, both at Plains.

On Aug. 12, 1955, she married Donald L. Davis at Greeley, Colo. He survives.

Other survivors are two daughters, Kim Eakes, Plains, and Jill Whippo, Garden City; a sister, Jan Wellhauser, Broansville, Ore.; a brother, Walt Mulholland, Sweet Home, Ore.; her mother, Isabelle Ripley, Sweet Home; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; a son, Brad Davis; and a granddaughter.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Plains, with the Rev. Vernon Maelzer officiating. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorials are suggested to the Plains Community Building Fund or Plains Community Library, both in care of Plains State Bank, P.O. Box 38, Plains, KS 67869.

Mamie C. Calhoun

LEOTI -- Mamie C. Calhoun, 93, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.

She was born Jan. 4, 1907, at Moline, the daughter of Clarence and Mamie (Wilson) Henninger.

A Wichita County resident since 1949, Mrs. Calhoun had been a seamstress and homemaker. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

On Aug. 31, 1924, she married H.P. "Hi" Calhoun at Beaver, Okla. He died in 1966.

She is survived by a son, Glenn Calhoun, Leoti; a daughter, Louise Jimerson, Wenatchee, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall in Leoti, with Don Largent officiating. Burial was in Leoti Cemetery.

Memorials to the Mamie C. Calhoun Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.

Elinor Bartholomew

Requiem Eucharist for former Garden City resident Elinor Bartholomew, 77, of Hastings, Neb., will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral, Hastings.

The Right Rev. James E. Krotz will officiate, assisted by the Right Rev. James D. Warner and the Very Rev. Richard J. Martindale. Committal will be in All Souls Chapel of St. Mark's.

Mrs. Bartholomew died of respiratory failure Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital, St. Paul, Minn., following a three-month battle with cancer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Born Nov. 13, 1922, at Piqua, Ohio, she was the daughter of Donald D. and Ruth (Baker) Miller. She attended Piqua Central High School, was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated from Ohio State University where she was president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Following graduation she taught first grade for six years. She later received a master's degree in counseling from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and was a high school counselor in Dayton.

She and her husband, the Very Rev. John P. Bartholomew, moved from Garden City to Hastings in 1973. He was the retired dean of St. Mark's and had served as priest at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church here from 1967 to 1973. He also served on the Garden City school board.

Until her retirement in 1993, Mrs. Bartholomew was a counselor in the Chemical Dependency Unit of the Hastings Regional Center for 20 years. While in Garden City, she had served as a counselor at the Area Mental Health Center.

She was co-founder of The Bridge in Hastings, a residential home for recovering women; was vice president of the Hastings Council on Alcoholism; and a past president of the Nebraska Central Regional Council on Alcoholism. She made frequent visits to schools, speaking about problems raised by alcohol and other drugs.

After retirement from full-time counseling, she established the St. Mark's Counseling Service where she offered free professional counseling for people of limited income.

In the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska she was founder of the diocesan Commission on Alcoholism and Other Drug Abuse for which she served as chairman for 10 years. For a number of years she served the diocesan Commission on Ministry as a consultant, interviewing candidates seeking the ordained ministry.

She served as church school superintendent for 20 years at St. Mark's; was parish librarian for seven years; had been a senior high youth leader, adult study leader and member of the Women's Executive Board; was a member and past president of the Morning Guild; a member of the Visiting Guild; and a frequent delegate to the annual Diocesan Council.

She served as chaplain of P.E.O., Chapter GZ, was a member of Finches and the Outlook Book Club, and was an accomplished artist and an avid reader.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Susan M. Fain, Lake City, Minn.; a son, John W. Monroe, Sidney, Ohio; and two stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be given to St. Mark's Pro-Cathedral as "Elinor Bartholomew Memorial."

Mildred M. Burnett

TRIBUNE -- Mildred M. Burnett, 90, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

She was born May 23, 1909, at Buffalo, Okla., the daughter of Thomas L. and Minnie M. (Waugh) Corr.

A Greeley County resident since 1948, she had been a lab technician at Greeley County Clinic for many years. She was a member of Assembly of God Church and the Women's Ministries.

On May 23, 1926, she married Charles F. Burnett at Towner, Colo. He died June 4, 1974, at Tribune. She was also preceded in death by a brother and a grandchild.

She is survived by four daughters, Marie Butler, Garden City, Louise Myers, Dorothy Martin and Lonnie Holmes, all of Tribune; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Assembly of God Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Michael Underwood officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 9 p.m. today and Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials to the Mildred Burnett Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Richard T. 'Dick' Lewis

HUGOTON -- Richard T. "Dick" Lewis, 79, of Hugoton, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born March 22, 1920, at Lakin, the son of John H. and Lucille R. (Towler) Lewis. Growing up in Grant County, he went to school at District 10 Country School and Ulysses Rural High School.

In August 1941, he married Gail Amos in Washington state.

Mr. Lewis had been a resident of Hugoton for 30 years. He was a pilot, aviation instructor and an agricultural spray pilot in southwest Kansas and Wichita. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 3rd Calvary Reconnaissance Troop and was a member of the Hugoton VFW.

He is survived by two sons, Richard E. Lewis, Park City, Utah, and Leon L. Lewis, Chelsea, Mich.; a daughter, Catherine Clark, Hugoton; a brother, Edward Lewis, Ulysses; two sisters, Myrtle Ferris, Santa Barbara, Calif., and Mable Petet, Uehling, Neb.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John W. Lewis; and a brother, Doug Lewis.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Larry Bradford officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton. Calling times at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to noon Thursday. Memorials are suggested to the VFW Children's Home, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 423 S. Main St., Hugoton, KS 67951.
