Pascual M. 'Paul' Orozco

Rosary vigil for Pascual M. "Paul" Orozco, 81, a longtime resident of Lamar, Colo., will be 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis de Sales and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Lamar, with the Rev. George Uralikunnel officiating.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Uralikunnel officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Lamar.

Mr. Orozco died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at Prowers Medical Center in Lamar.

Born May 28, 1918, at Windom, he was the son of Augustin P. and Maria de Jesus Marquez Orozco.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine D. Orozco; three sons, Paul M. Orozco Jr., Lamar, Luiz Ramon Orozco Sr., Garden City, and Vincent R. Orozco, Walsenburg, Colo.; three daughters, Sister Teresa L. Orozco, Great Bend, Susanna F. Stegman and Laura Denice Orozco-Estep, both of Lamar; a sister, Dorothy Guerrero, Garden City; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and two grandsons.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Peacock-Wood Funeral Home, Lamar. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 209 S. Fourth St., Lamar, CO 81052.

Mary Louise Smith

TOPEKA -- Mary Louise Smith, 91, died Friday at a Topeka hospital.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Klasse Chapel of First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 4, 1908, in Courtland, the daughter of Martin August and Hannah Lavenia Peterson Larson.

Smith graduated from Courtland High School in 1927 and attended Strickler's Business College. She worked as an accountant at Southwestern Bell for 28 years, retiring in 1972.

Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Westey & Service Guild church circle, Philip Billard Post No. 1650, VFW, Capitol Post No. 1, American Legion, Moose Lodge No. 555, AARP and Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneers.

She was awarded cook of the week three times in the Topeka Capital-Journal.

On June 1, 1945, Smith married Roland Burtis. He died July 6, 1946.

She got remarried to Carl LeRoy Smith July 21, 1955. He died Dec. 24,1962.

She is survived by six sisters: Myrtle L. Nondorf, Courtland; Edna Dicke, Edythe Coleman, Winifred Krueger, all of Topeka; Delores Long, Garden City; and Wilma Butler, Holton. She is also survived by one step-son, Jerry Burtis, Pamona, Calif.

Visitation hours are from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel. Vigil, wake and rosary will be after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Memorials are to be sent to the United Methodist Church or VFW Auxiliary. Arrangements have been made by Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel (785) 354-8558.

Darin Eugene Golay

Darin Eugene Golay, 22, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Garfield in Pawnee County.

He was born April 4, 1978, at Garden City, the son of Kenneth and Marsha (McNaught) Golay.

A lifetime Garden City resident, he graduated from Garden City High School in 1996 and also graduated from Garden City Community College. He was in his second year at Kansas State University, majoring in hotel and restaurant management. He was soon to serve his internship in hotel and restaurant management at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Mr. Golay was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He loved athletics and played basketball on a squad which helped train the Kansas State University women's basketball team. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, Garden City; a brother, Kendall Golay, Garden City; his grandparents, Carl and Marian McNaught, Garden City, and Ina Golay, Holcomb; and several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Golay; his grandfather, Herman Golay; and an aunt, Judy Roth.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Darin Golay Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Bertha M. Johnson

LAKIN -- Bertha M. 'Bert' Johnson, 90, died Friday at High Plains Retirement Village, Lakin.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Carley Hazelton presiding.

Burial will be at Lakin Cemetery.

She was born May 21, 1909, the daughter of Jesse F. Walker and Mamie Calloway in Chandler, Tenn.

After moving to the Copeland area with her family, Johnson later moved to Hickok. In the early 1940s, she moved to California, then moved to Lakin in 1953.

Johnson owned and operated several restaurants in Lakin from 1953 to the late 1970s.

She enjoyed cooking, bowling, quilting and playing cards.

Johnson was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kearny County Senior Center and a Kearny County Historical Society life member.

Johnson is survived by one son, Don Johnson, Fort Scott; two brothers, Harold Walker, Elk City, Okla.; Jim Walker, Washington; two sisters, Ruth Walker, Afton, Okla.; Beatrice Johnson, Amity, Ore.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchilren.

Calling time will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.

Memorials can be sent to the Kearny County Senior Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.

Charles D. Baum Sr.

LEOTI -- Charles D. Baum Sr., 80, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

He was born Jan. 29, 1920, the son of Frederick F. and Anna L. (Axtell) Baum.

A Leoti resident since 1958, he was an independent auto mechanic and also had been a mechanic for the Wichita County school system, retiring in 1982. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the VFW, both at Leoti, and was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II.

On March 14, 1942, he married Thelma Kelly at Topeka. She survives. Other survivors are two sons, Charles D. Jr., Greenville, Ill., and Dean L., of Wallace; a daughter, Vicki Ann Armstrong, Guthrie, Okla.; his mother, Leoti; a sister, Marie Fletcher, Leoti; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Woolard officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery, with full military honors conducted.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials to the Charles D. Baum Sr. Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

B.R. 'Ben' Grusing

LEOTI -- Funeral for B.R. "Ben" Grusing, 80, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Christ Covenant Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Dave Brogren officiating. Burial will be in Lydia Cemetery in Wichita County.

Mr. Grusing died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Swedish Hospital in Englewood, Colo.

He was born June 13, 1919, in Kearny County, the son of John and Anna (De Vries) Grusing. A lifetime resident of western Kansas, he was a cowboy and belonged to Christ Covenant Church.

On Dec. 3, 1939, he married Vandella Moore in Wichita County. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Ray, Glenwood Springs, Colo., Dale, Lubbock, Texas, and Butch, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Judy Woods, Leoti; three brothers, Bill, Byers, Colo., Henry, Hutchinson, and Wesley, Lakin; four sisters, Helen Kysar and Edith Litton, both of Lakin, Alice Geyer, WaKeeney, and Clara Warrington, Manzanola, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to Christ Covenant Church, Lydia Church or the Leoti Emergency Medical Technicians, all in care of the funeral home.
